Jorge Posada could rejoin the Yankees as early as Wednesday (a few reports suggested Tuesday). Kat O'Brien of Newsday says the Yanks will hold on to both Jose Molina and Chad Moeller for "a while" after Posada returns, but as Peter Abraham points out on the LoHud Yankees blog, the Yankees have a real need for a set-up man now that Joba Chamberlain is starting. Juan Uribe has been activated from the 15-day DL, and although Ozzie Guillen said he wasn't guaranteed  playing time, they had to make room on the roster nonetheless; DeWayne Wise was designated for assigment.  The news that Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket comes as a shock to yours truly, but it underscores just how much starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, even with Daisuke Matsuzaka currently on the 15-day DL. Jorge Posada could be back with the Yankees within a week, as the catcher will take the next step in his rehab Saturday in Tampa according to the New York Daily News. Posada, who has been out since April 27 with rotator cuff tendinitis, caught seven innings Thursday in his third extended spring game, going 1-for-2 with two walks. Before the game, Posada threw from distances of 60, 90, 120 and 150 feet, also making five hard throws to second base and five more to third. He didn't throw to any bases during the game, but he will be cleared to do so in tomorrow's extended spring game. "It feels good," Posada told the Associated Press. "The more I throw, the better it feels. It's coming along. I'm happy with the throwing today. I think I'm going to DH (Friday) and then Saturday go full-bore." It didn't accelerate his timetable for returning to the Yankees' lineup, but Jorge Posada passed a small rehab milestone Sunday when he caught a bullpen session by Ian Kennedy, his first work in catcher's gear since going on the disabled list in April according to the New York Daily News. "They just wanted my legs to start feeling the pounding of catching again," Posada said. Posada also made 20 throws from 75 feet and 20 throws from 90 feet as part of his throwing program to strengthen his right shoulder after being diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis. "We're still shooting for the beginning of June," Posada said. "We'll see, if it continues to go the way it's going."

I'm not sure whether the Yankees finances have changed or the younger generations has changed philosophies but don't let them fool you, money was just as much a consideration as Phil Hughes was in deciding to not go after Johan Santana. With that in mind the Yankees invested 52.4 million over four years into 36 y/o catcher Jorge Posada. While I didn't think it was a bad contract Posada was just too much of a Yankee for me to be interested, but at 36 y/o the Yankees knew he would have to spend time at 1B and DH. Posada now has a shoulder injury that is effecting his ability to throw, as a catcher that's essential, just ask Mike Piazza. Posada has decided to forgo surgery because he would lose half a season and his best tool, hitting isn't effected by the injury. "It's not where we want him to be, so we're going to shut him down," Girardi announced after Tuesday night's 6-4 loss to Detroit at the Stadium. "He's out at least 15 days, and he's a hard guy to replace....Not the news I was looking for, but this is baseball." The despondent look on Jorge Posada's face told most of the story Sunday. The MRI that will be taken on his injured right shoulder in the next day or two will tell the rest of it. Posada will be placed on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder, the same one that kept him from catching for two weeks earlier this month. Posada has never been on the DL in his career, but the issue now isn't whether he will miss time, but how long it will be before he can return according to the New York Daily "n MRI taken a few weeks ago showed a mild strain of the subscapularis muscle in his shoulder, which, by definition, is a tear. Posada took a cortisone shot last week to help him deal with the discomfort, but after making two solid throws on Saturday, he couldn't throw effectively while warming up yesterday, causing him to be scratched from the lineup less than 15 minutes before first pitch. Posada had surgery on the same shoulder in November 2001 to repair a small tear in the labrum....
