More On Position Battles And A Possible New Starter
2007-10-08 09:25:00 As I recently posted about, the starting center and first point guard off the bench are still being battled for. Andrew Bynum is reportedly looking good with his rebounding and blocking, and Chris Mihm is able to play after missing all of last season. Kwame Brown is being held out of contact drills, but will have a chance to fight for the starting center position before the season opener on October 30. All of the backup point guards, namely Jordan Farmar, Javaris Crittenton, and even Sasha Vujacic, who was used last season mostly as a shooting guard, went through shooting/rebounding drills in which one point guard would shoot, and the next in line would rebound the ball. The point guards have been pushing each other to get the best out of everyone, and trying to earn their spot to be the first point guard off the bench after Derek Fisher sits down for a rest. News about a possible new starter has been reported. Phil Jackson has been reported saying that Ronny Turiaf may get th...

Bills Position Battles: Starters Already Decided?
2007-08-22 14:41:00 Is DiGiorgio's starting bid legitimate? (Courtesy: BuffaloBills.com) The Buffalo Bills are a close of training camp and two pre-season games away from the start of the 2007 regular season. It has been clearly established that this year's version of the Bills is very young and very talented, but perhaps not ready to set the NFL on fire. That much is to be expected out of a team so inexperienced at the NFL level. The most important thing that could happen now is for the offensive, defense and special teams first units to get as much playing time as possible - only then will this team begin to play together and reach its potential. However, the Bills have not hit that point yet. Head Coach Dick Jauron has insisted on letting several positional battles "play themselves out", and the result is that with precious little time for the respective first units left in the pre-season (as most top units play very little in the final pre-season game), the starting units have not yet...
5 Position Battles to Watch vs KC
2007-08-16 07:05:00 Let's take a look at which key position battles we should all keep our eyes on for the game on Thursday night. And as always, if you feel I left one out, feel free to tell me. Chris Liwienski vs Rex Hadnot vs Drew Mormino It's become very clear that these 3 players are battling for 2 starting spots. It was Hadnot and Mormino getting the starting gigs last week. However, Hadnot clearly struggled, which surprised me because he was very consistent last year. I wonder what changed. Mormino wasn't very good either, but he wasn't terrible. And all camp long, we've heard coaches and media talk about how Drew is improving every day and how he could become a draft day steal. The most interesting thing about this situation, though, is that while the first and second depth charts released by the team had Liwienski as a starter, it was Hadnot and Mormino starting last week. Considering that fact, and the fact that Hadnot struggled, it isn'...

2007 Position Battles: Closer
2007-03-08 04:47:02 Battles:Florida MarlinsCandidates: Taylor TankersleyRicky NolascoMatt LindstromHenry OwensKevin GreggEdge: None--The Marlins don't have a savvy veteran , but they have a stable of young arms that includes Taylor Tankersley, Ricky Nolasco, Matt Lindstrom, and Henry Owens. Kevin Gregg is the other name in the mix. A couple early notes from MLB.com have caught our eye. One, Nolasco is currently being used as a starter. Two, the team does not want to use a committee. Tankersley appears to be the early favorite, but we have a long way to go until Opening Day. Cincinnati RedsCandidates:David WeathersToddy CoffeyMike StantonBill BrayKerry LigtenbergRheal CormierEdge: David Weathers--The Reds don't have a clear-cut closer and appear to be leaning towards using a committee. Weathers shared the duties with Kent Mercker to open the 2006 campaign, and the team eventually toyed with Todd Coffey and traded for Eddie Guardado. At the moment, Weathers has a slight edge on the job, but there are p...
2007 Position Battles: Shortstop
2007-03-07 10:46:01 Colorado RockiesCandidates:Troy TulowitzkiClint BarmesEdge: None--Most Rockies fans and fantasy baseball prognosticators would love to hand this job to Troy Tulowitzki, but manager Clint Hurdle isn't out to simply please us. Tulowitzki, a first-round pick in the 2005 draft, took over for Clint Barmes in September of last season. The two are now battling this spring. Barmes, 28, is a quality defender who is trying to re-find his swing. Tulowitzki, 22, is the future stud who may need a bit more seasoning. Toronto Blue JaysCandidates:Royce ClaytonJohn McDonaldEdge: Royce Clayton--The 37-year-old Clayton will likely open the season as the starter. However, John McDonald started 76 games at the spot last year and may split the job with Clayton. Either way, there's not much to like here for fantasy baseball owners.Washington NationalsCandidates:Cristian GuzmanFelipe LopezEdge: Cristian Guzman--In 2006, Guzman missed the entire season after undergoing surgery on his shoulder. He has expe...

2007 Position Battles: Third Base
2007-03-06 22:45:02 Kansas City RoyalsCandidates:Alex GordonMark TeahenEdge: Alex Gordon--Heading into Spring Training, it seemed as though we would have a battle to determine if Gordon, the 2006 Minor League Player of the Year, was ready force Mark Teahen from third to outfield, but that situation has cleared up over the last week. The Royals aren't simply going to concede the job to Gordon, but it appears that it's now his to lose. The bottom line is that there is a sliver of uncertainty regarding who will line up at the hot corner on Opening Day, but that sliver is microscopic?a polar opposite of Gordon's growing fantasy value.Houston AstrosCandidates:Morgan EnsbergMike LambMark LorettaEdge: Morgan Ensberg--Ensberg is still the overwhelming favorite to be the Astros starting third baseman despite a lackluster 2006 campaign in which his average dropped by nearly 50 points, his home runs decreased by 13, and his RBI fell by roughly 50 percent. The team will keep Mike Lamb and Mark Loretta in the ...
Position Battles: Catcher
2007-03-05 10:44:03 Kansas City RoyalsCandidates: John BuckJason LaRueEdge: John Buck--Buck has the edge because he's younger, stronger, and been in the organization longer. However, the 32-year-old LaRue started a lot of games for the Reds over the years and is healthy following a disappointing season. Los Angeles AngelsCandidates:Mike NapoliJose MolinaJeff MathisEdge: Mike Napoli--The early bets are on Napoli and Molina sticking with the big club and Mathis heading back to Triple-A. Napoli brings good pop and a suspect batting average, Molina doesn't do anything at the plate (but is good defensively), and Mathis has the tools to help out a lineup. We have Napoli as our highest-rated fantasy guy at the moment. Arizona DiamondbacksCandidates: Miguel MonteroChris SnyderEdge: None--Montero, 23, is a left-handed hitter and the backstop of the future. Snyder, 26, is a right-handed hitter and has been up with the big club each of the past two years. We're smelling a platoon to open to the season, which ... |
