The 2nd Best Finish of the NCAA Postseason
2008-03-25 06:37:00 What Sean Singletary did in last night’s NCAA post-season tournament game was worthy of being on every highlight show in the country—if it had only been in the NCAA tournament…or even the NIT. Instead in happened in the College Basketball Invitational. Old Dominion led Virginia by four with 35 seconds left when Singletary made two free throws to cut the lead in half. The Cavs fouled and Old Dominion made one of two. Singletary then calmly marched down court and banked in the game tying three. ODU held for the last shot, but as ther point guard attempted to get free Singletary picked his pocket and went the other way for the go-ahead three point play. It was an Anthony Atkinson-like performance. It was also a fitting exclamation point for a remarkable career which saw Singletary named first team all-ACC three straight years in a row. Singletary’s career probably didn’t end the way he envisioned (the CBI?), but he will leave with that one last u...

2008-02-26 22:09:00 Here's some insight into how I pick topics I'm going to write about.I was staring at the screen, thinking What Best Thing Do I Like Today? and I looked at a list of ideas I keep handy, things that start out popping into my head while I'm driving, then get written on my hand, then get transferred to a post-it note in my wallet, and then typed into a list titled "TBOE topics." Focus on postseason chances
2008-02-21 16:25:00 It's nearly tournament time in college basketball. At this point of the season, individual accolades are not nearly as important as postseason opportunities. Fans want to know whether their team will qualify for their league tournaments. In college men's basketball, teams like Florida, Oregon, Massachusetts and St. Joseph's are on the proverbial bubble, unsure whether they will reach the NCAA Tournament. Women's teams like Houston, Southern Alabama and Illinois State are also concerned. These teams may have to win their respective college tournaments to reach the NCAA Tournament. (Please, please, please: Do not call this the Big Dance unless you are also going to ruin your copy with terms like charity stripe, dishing the rock, and treys.) So, focus on your school's postseason chances. Will your school's team even reach the league tournament? Perhaps, the team is in 10th place and only eight teams go, which is the case for our school in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. W...

Postseason Fantasy Football
2007-12-19 18:15:00 Hopefully your fantasy league already has something set up, but if not it's time to start thinking about postseason fantasy football. Just because the NFL season has ended it doesn't mean you need to lose your fantasy football fix. The NFL postseason is a great time to get in some more smack-talking fantasy competition. There are several different ways to set up a postseason fantasy league depending on the way your league is set up and the options your commissioner service allows. I play in a league where we keep all our season rosters during the playoffs, with a giant waiver wire rush before the playoffs to drop guys like Willis McGahee in order to pick up guys like Heath Evans. We assign a bit of prize money from the pot to the winner of the league "Pro Bowl" (as we call it) and have a lot of fun tracking it through the playoffs. Another way to do it is to clear all the rosters and have a new draft from a pool of the NFL Playoff teams. This ...

D.C. United postseason ended by Chicago again
2007-11-02 14:39:00 Yet another postseason D.C. United run was ended by the Chicago Fire as United tied Chicago 2-2 last night to lose the opening round series 3-2 on aggregate goals. DCU's fate was all but sealed after giving up goals against Chad Barrett and Chris Rolfe to go down by three goals in aggregate. United scored their own 2nd half goals in quick succession from Clyde Simms and Christian Gomez. What would have been D.C. United's third goal from Gomez that would have tied the aggregate standing was disallowed though on a disputed handball call. DCU's postseason run was all but done at that point.Area fans will still be able to enjoy this year's MLS Cup in two plus weeks from RFK Stadium but sadly without a local team in the offing. D.C. United will instead get to regroup for next year's MLS season where it can at least have that aging stadium to itself.Relevant links: Washington Post, Washington Times, The DCenters

The Best Postseason Pitchers You May Not Know
2007-10-26 15:49:00 With playoff baseball comes the inevitable debates about who the greatest postseason performer was. This has been especially true in lieu of Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling's recent performances in the World Series. Many people are familiar with some of the best postseason hurlers, but what about some other, less heralded pitchers? Are there guys out there who may have flown a bit under the radar? In fact, there are a number of them. While none of these guys had the extensive impact of a Bob Gibson or Mariano Rivera, they still delivered clutch performances throughout their postseason careers*. Ken Dayley, St. Louis CardinalsIf I were to ask you who in postseason history had the best WHIP (0.58), allowed the least number of hits per 9 innings (2.61) and the fourth best ERA (0.44), your first answer might not be Ken Dayley, but that's the correct answer.Dayley was a lefthanded reliever for the Cardinals who pitched in both the 1985 NLCS and World Series, and the 1987 NLCS and World ...
The Rivera-Jeter Postseason Paradox
2007-10-23 07:29:00 With Mariano Rivera’s future as a Yankee in doubt, I figured it was time to revisit the paradox of calling both Rivera and Derek Jeter two of the all-time great postseason players. For both players (particularly Rivera) the numbers seem as though they cannot lie, but is there more than meets the eye? First let’s start with Rivera. In 76 career postseason games he has an 8-1 record, a 0.77 ERA, and a WHIP well under 1.00. He also has four World Series rings. Those things seem to unquestionably make him one of the all time greats. But here’s the problem. Rivera has also unquestionably cost the Yankees two World Series titles (I’m of course assuming the Yankees would have beat the Cardinals in 2004.) In 2001 Rivera blew a World Series clinching game 7 in Arizona. Then three years later he blew an ALCS clinching game 4 in Boston. Nobody knows if the Yankees would have won those first four World Series’ without Rivera (probably not), but if it weren&r...

Postseason Odds Updates All Weekend As Games Finish
2007-09-29 22:31:00 At 4:00 eastern time Saturday the Mets‘ finished off a 13-0 thrashing of the Marlins. INDAY UPDATE: The Mets’ thrashing of the Marlins raises their playoff chances from 21.0% to 31.1%: division champ chance up from 17.6 to 25.6, wild card up from 3.5 to 5.5. It cuts the Phillies‘ chances from 82.4/1.5/84.0 to 74.4/2.4/76.9. The chance of an NL East tie, which would require a playoff game, is up to 34.0%. The Mets’ victory drops the Padres‘ wild card chances from 82.5 to 79.9 and the Rockies‘ chances from 4.4 to 4.0. The chance of a wild card playoff game is up from 16.3 to 19.8%; the chance of a three-way tie is up from 4.8 to 7.7 and a four-way tie is up from 1.8 to 3.0%. UPDATE #2: Philly fans go from yesterday’s high to a sad low, as a badly-fielded seventh inning costs them two runs in a 4-2 loss to the Nationals. The East division title odds are now basically 50-50, with a very slight edge to the Phils: 50.4 for them, 49.6 for the Mets....

Chances of Making the Postseason from Baseball Prospectus

Milledge in the Postseason
2007-08-23 17:10:00 Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. The Mets have by no means locked up a spot in the postseason, but last night's game against the Padres and Jake Peavy had me considering Milledge's roll in the postseason lineup.Lastings Milledge has been a great asset to this team in the second half. He's hitting for average, but also getting big hits with men on base and clutch hits as was evident on Tuesday night. He should absolutely start in front of Shawn Green for the rest of the year.Last night I thought would be a good test for Milledge facing a stellar starter in Jake Peavy. Peavy is the type of pitcher that Milledge would face in the playoffs on a regular basis. Milledge struggled mightily last night going 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts. There wasn't a single at bat where Milledge looked comfortable at the plate.I can see Milledge struggling come playoff time. There are very few young players who perform well in their first postseason appearance, so we need to keep getting Green some ...

Postseason Predictions
2007-04-03 20:44:00 By Dalton Del Don NL MVP ? Albert Pujols I know, what a boring pick. Still, Albert the Great has only won one MVP award thus far in his career, which is hard to believe. He?s likely to be pitched around more frequently this year, and he bats in the weakest lineup off all other contenders. Jose Reyes could be one of those contenders, as could Miguel Cabrera if Florida hangs around the playoff picture long enough. Barry Bonds is a dark horse candidate, but San Francisco is more likely to finish in last place than they are first. Ryan Howard can?t be discounted as a possible repeat winner, especially since the media love home runs. In the end, Pujols wins it. NL Cy Young ? Jake Peavy Chris Carpenter is probably the favorite entering the year, as he has shown good durability and has a terrific defense playing behind him. Carlos Zambrano is pitching for a big contract, and if he can improve his walk rate, this award could follow. Ben Sheets, John Smoltz, Brett Myers and Cole Hamels are a...
