Homoerotic Art Museum (HAM) Is All Meat and No Potatoes
2009-11-10 09:20:00
Ooh la la! I'd love to spend an afternoon roaming the halls of the Homoerotic Art Museum (NSFW). Too bad its just a virtual museum at this point run by fans of male imagery. The museum is divided into different halls representing art from different geographical locations plus a research room for works that they don't have enough data on to properly categorize. They are always seeking new submissions and data about the art that they already have archived. The Homoerotic Museum- the HAM, is all meat and no potatoes!...
Mike Rusin: Meat and potatoes
2009-10-26 15:43:00
Mike Rusin, 28, of Old Town MEAT AND POTATOES:  with celery root, mushroom and pear THE INSPIRATION Saturday morning in Chicago was cold and rainy, but so many brightly colored leaves still clung to the trees such that the day did not seem gloomy. Still, it felt like a "comfort food" kinda day, and we were waiting for the unveiling of the ingredients to conjure up a meal that would be perfect to serve my in-laws celebrating the 35th anniversary of their first date. The preparation of the meal was actually a gift from my wife and I for their 29th wedding anniversary.  My in-laws are native Chicagoans, and, like my wife and I and the rest of our family--definitely...

All This Meat, Gravy and No Potatoes
2009-09-02 21:40:00
The World Gravy Wrestling Championships was held in the UK and featured some beefcake men wrestling in a pool of outdated gravy. It got me thinking- what would Chicagoans wrestle in in? A vat of Maxwell Street Polishes? A pool of Old Style beer? A slurry of Oprah's AƧaƭ Berries? What do you think? What would you like to see people wrestle in? Continue for a video of the hot gravy shenanigans-...

Sweet, salty, spicy - Korean braised potatoes

2009-01-06 21:39:00
Hi and a very bright and beautiful New Year to all my avid readers. May all your troubles this year be as short-lived as your New Year's resolutions:>) So! ! I am back again from one of my long breaks . I know I have been taking so many long breaks between posts that I think you all are probably tired of hearing my reasons. But please hear me out one more time. The break in blogging started because of the Christmas holidays. 2 weeks of sheer relaxation. I like Christmas holidays particularly as it is a holiday without having the stress to celebrate the festival as we don't celebrate Christmas . Well we do it a little bit just for my son who still believes in Santa and reindeer and all the Christmassy bits that are so important and delightful to a child . So we have some fairy lights in the house and of course he has a Christmas stocking and his Christmas present of course. But basically what the holidays mean is husband and son at home . (i.e son for 2 weeks of course and husband ...
Don?t Eat Those Green Potatoes!
2009-01-06 06:01:00
There are many ways to enjoy potatoes: fried, mashed, baked, etc. Potatoes get a bad reputation from dieters because of its starch content and high classification on the glycemic index. Although there are many nutritional benefits of potatoes, will these pros be able to outweigh the cons?
Danish Sugar-browned Potatoes (Brunede Kartofler)
2008-12-22 16:00:00
Minoo made this Danish Sugar-browned Potatoes specially for Paul. Paul described this potato dish to Minoo and Minoo was able to get the recipe from a Danish in a grocery store she visited. When Minoo tried the recipe at home, she ate all the potatoes by herself because they are that good.
Baked Mashed Sweet Potatoes
2008-12-21 03:23:00
The other day I decided to put together a huge bowl of mashed sweet potatoes. I like mashed sweet potatoes a lot. It?s a perfect side dish for chicken or steak or anything. Mashed sweet potatoes are great with sprinkles of cinnamon or nutmeg. I noticed at many restaurants they make it too sweet. They add way too much brown sugar and sometimes even add an extra layer of melted brown sugar on top. It almost seems like you can?t taste the natural sweetness of the potatoes and all you taste is, yeah, pure melted brown sugar.I like my mashed sweet potatoes simple and light. Here?s a basic recipe for mashed sweet potatoes.Ingredients:2 sweet potatoes2 tbsp butter2 tsp brown sugar¼ cup milkDirections:Peel the sweet potatoes. Cut the potato into smaller chunks to speed up the cooking. Boil the potatoes until they are tender. Potatoes are ready when you can insert a fork into the pieces easily.Drain the potatoes and place it into a large mixing bowl.Add butter, brown sugar, and milk.Mix well...
Dum Aloo / Potatoes in Yogurt-Tomato-Onion Gravy
2008-12-04 09:09:00
'Dum' cooking is a traditional method of slow-cooking, normally on a bed of coal with pots over them, sealed with flour and water so that no heat escapes it. Sometimes coal is spread out on the pot lid to distribute heat evenly. Thanks to our modern-day cooking accessories, nothing takes that much effort, though the difference in change is definitely debatable. Dum aloo is not something I make often because I try to avoid using the mixer on weeknights and normally don't buy pureed stuff in cans (or anything in cans for that matter, except milkmaid!).This was made on a weekend a few weeks back when I was in a lovely mood to cook and I followed the recipe I had scribbled down from mom-in-law, to the last letter. What I Used:Baby Potatoes / New potatoes - 15 nosTomato - 1 large, choppedOnion - 1, choppedGreen chilly - 2Ginger - a 1" pieceGarlic - 3 cloves (or 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste)Yogurt / curd - 2 TbspOil - 1 tbspSalt to tasteCoriander (cilantro) leaves - for garnishingSpices:C...
Hark, the Thumping Potatoes...make change for a 20?
2008-11-30 13:29:00
The sounds of the holidays, in our house, include things that you would not hear elsewhere, sounds like the soothing tones of Foghat blasting out Christmas music accompanied by the pounding beat of potatoes being thrown across the room. Also, there was a Thanksgiving pageant in which Sweetie played two parts.Pageants have always played a big role in my holidays, so it was nice to welcome them back this year. When I was younger, we regularly put on Christmas pageants not just at the Catholic school we attended for a while, but also at home for all the aunts and uncles who would come over and subtly mock us while we put on the Christmas pageants. My memories of those pageants, both official and un-, are somewhat hazy. But I know that for one, I was the Christmas star: a fat kid with crooked glasses holding up a giant star covered in tinfoil and ringed with garland reciting a poem for the whole Church and for the whole family Christmas gathering."Christmas Star" was one of my few...
Potatoes are the REAL transformers: 51 down, 9,142 to go
2008-11-29 13:39:00
Sweetie and I got all of our Christmas shopping done yesterday. I'll give the full details next week, but in the meantime, here's a list of the things I got yesterday:-- Two "Mr. Potatoheads," the Transformer and the Taters of the Lost Ark kind.-- An Orange Julius (finally!)(and it was excellent.)-- One eye roll and one head shake from fellow shoppers, both of which I'm pretty sure were entirely undeserved.-- A lecture by Sweetie on when one should use one's blinker to turn into McDonald's to get an eggnog shake, also entirely undeserved. (The lecture, not the shake. The shake was deserved.)Song 51 is not a Christmas Song, but it should be, as demonstrated by the video. Song 49 also answers this question: Weren't ALL Mr. Potatoheads "transformers?"Okay, it doesn't answer that question at all. But it's a valid question. And I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes." Potatoheads were also the original "Muppets." Song 51, by the way, is "Music Box Dancer" by Frank Mills,a so...
Spicy Baby Potatoes
2008-11-21 06:00:00
This recipe has been totally and completely flicked from my sister's blog. I didn't have curry leaves in the house and mine didn't come quite as delicious-looking as hers, especially the gravy, but both TH and I licked the bowl clean. The simplicity of this dish makes me wonder why I've never tried this version before. What I Used (to serve two):Baby potatoes /new potatoes ? 15 nosOnions - 2 medium sized ones, choppedGarlic paste - 1 tsp (or 4 pods, minced)Sambar powder - 2 tbsp (or 2 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp jeera, 1/8 tsp fenugreek seeds, 2 tsp red chilli powder)Turmeric powder - a pinchMustard seeds - 1/4 tspUrad dal - 1 tspOil - 2 tbspsSalt - to tasteHow I Made It:1. Wash the potatoes. Pressure cook for 3 whistles (or put in a heavy-bottomed pan with sufficient water and let cook on a medium fire). Cool, peel and set aside.2. Add sambar powder, salt and turmeric to the potatoes with very little water and leave to marinate for half hour.3. Heat oil and temper mustard seeds....
A Skunk and Potatoes Man
2008-11-12 08:54:00
When I was working as an anthropologist for a local Indian tribe, I had to go through all of the anthropological literature about the tribe. This took quite some time. There was quite a bit of hostility from the Indians towards the anthropologists, which is stupid, sad and mostly just ignorant. The legend had grown up among many of the Indians that the anthropologists who had come through were the "enemies of the Indian people." I researched the folks who had come through and it didn't seem to fit.We are talking some of the biggest names of all like Alfred Kroeber. Kroeber and his wife loved the Indians in a time at the turn of the century when Indians were not so popular. The legend continued that the crafty Indians, in order to fool the wicked White men, had concocted lies to tell the anthropologist.Anthropological- field work is hard enough without having to deal with this kind of crap, but it does come up at times. Fieldwork manuals will tell you, first of all, that you need to d...
Aloo Palak - Potatoes in a Spinach Gravy
2008-11-12 07:46:00
I really can't believe how fast time is flying. Its been week since my last post. I have been making mostly simple sabzis the past week since we have been apartment hunting almost every evening after work. A subzi and some steamed rice is all I have energy for after work and poking around strangers' houses.Aloo PalakAloo Palak is a sure-shot winner at home since TH loves both potatoes and palak. And its generally a quick recipe for me since I chop the spinach during weekends and freeze it or sometimes buy it chopped.Aloo Palak is originally a Punjabi recipe, (which reminds me - what happened to RCI??) and the authentic recipe includes addition of some methi or fenugreek leaves to it. My version is very customized to my laziness so you may or may not find it to resemble something you would get in a Punjabi restaurant ;)What I Used:Palak / Spinach / Cheera - 2 cups, choppedPotatoes / Aloo - 2, cubedOnion - 1 small, chooped (I used 5-6 shallots so that works as well)Garlic pods - 2 ...
Chettinad Aloo / Potatoes with Chettinad Masala
2008-10-10 10:48:00
Do not get thrown away by the blahh pic accompanying this recipe. You have to try it to see how awesome it tastes. Before I go any further, this recipe is an original one but from a cousin. She is very new to cooking and yet came up with this amazingly flavourful dish for us. I took the recipe from her (she just calls it throwing a few things together) and have made it twice in 2 weeks.I think I am beginning to like potatoes almost as much as TH!What I Used:Pototoes - 3 bigGinger garlic paste - 1 tbspRed chilli powder - 1.5 tspCardamom - 1Cinnamon - 1" pieceCloves - 2Star anise - 1 (optional)Grated / dessicated coconut - 2 tbspORKhus khus / poppy seeds - 1 tbsp, soakedSalt - to tasteFor temperingOil - 1 tbspMustard seeds - 1/2 tspUrad dal - 1/2 tspHow I Made It:1. Boil and mash the potatoes. Set aside.2. Grind together the cinnamon, cardamom, anise, cloves and coconut/couscous with no added water. Cooking with Anna: Involtini e Melenzane
2008-06-04 16:54:00
So we are going to go back in time a little with this post. I hope you all don’t mind the time warp this blog sometimes is! It is hard sometimes figuring out when to post what! The life of a food blogger is all about organization…and sometimes the lack thereof. Anyway, as you all know, the week before our wedding, Anna, Roberto’s mom came to stay with us. She is a food blogger and member of The Foodie Blogroll! Her blog AnnaGarau.com features recipes from her native Sardinia. It is a great blog, full of wonderful anecdotes about Sardinia as well as beautiful pictures and she is quite the chef. It is in Italian, so if you want to check it out, and I recommend that you do, use one of those handy dandy translators like this translator from Google. You can even watch a video of traditional Sardinian dancing and singing - something Sardinians are known for. When she was here at our house, she was updating that post and we were having such a good time. I was really ...

”Ni Papas! (Not even potatoes!)
2008-05-22 13:55:00
For those of you who don’t know “ni papas” is a Canarian expression which literally translates as “not even potatoes” but really means “nothing” (I suppose because if you’re not even collecting potatoes, there’s nothing left). Usually it’s tacked on the end of a sentence; I’ve heard it used in the following phrase by my ...
English potatoes are nutritious
2008-05-21 18:07:00
According to my reading, English potatoes have 10 times more protein and vitamin B1 than apples. The food also contains three and a half times more vitamin C than the apple. As for vitamin B2 and iron, the contents in English potatoes are three times more than apples. Besides, the English potato has two times more phosphorus than the apple. It has the same amount of sugar and calcium as the apple. Sailors in the past took English potatoes to prevent scurvy because they contain a lot of vitamin C. 60 per cent of potassium is found on the skin of the food. Hence taking English potatoes with the skin intact will lower the blood pressure. However those with renal problems should not take English potatoes as the accumulation of potassium will worsen the condition of the disease.
