Potomac Nationals win Carolina League championship
2008-09-16 14:24:00 The Potomac Nationals won the Carolina League championship of class A+ minor league baseball last week, defeating the Myrtle Beach Pelicans three games to one. The title was the first one by a full season minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals since the parent club arrived in D.C., giving some hope for the beleaguered organization. The title win was also the second consecutive Carolina League championship to be claimed by a D.C. area club. The Frederick Keys won the Mills Cup in 2007 but did not qualify for the league playoffs this go-round.Potomac clinched the title at their home field in Woodbridge, Va. off an 8-2 game four rout, establishing what tuned out to be the clinching runs in the first inning with a Dee Brown two-run homer. Potomac's toughest win turned to actually be its game three triumph, overcoming a three run deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for an 8-7 ten inning triumph._______________________-_______________________________-________...

Clinton?s Keeps Negative Attacks Rolling
2008-02-18 06:58:00 After Clinton attacked Obama for not debating her in Wisconsin, she has gone after Obama even harder. Clinton has aired another new ad attacking Obama?s health care plan. Hillary released a new attack ad going after Obama on health care, social security, and once again saying he is afraid to debate her in Wisconsin. Hillary was not the only Clinton making attacks on Obama over the past week. Over the weekend, former President Bill Clinton accused Obama of knocking the other Democratic candidates out of the race because of his attacks on experience. While campaigning in Texas, Bill said that, "if you fought you made somebody mad, and you got cut up.? He went on to say, ?we just have to turn over a new leaf. And it is actually an advantage not to have any experience because then you never made anybody mad." Bill Clinton blames Obama for destroying the other candidates with his attacks on experience which have been very affective. The ad Hillary released,...
Musings on the Potomac Primary
2008-02-13 19:27:00 One reason I think John McCain can't beat Barack Obama in NovemberTuesday-night Obama speech=Hope; unity; regular people deserve a voice and fairness; end the war; take care of domestic needs; reverse tax cuts for the wealthy; provide affordable health care; provide affordable college education; retire with dignity; teachers need better pay and more support; children deserve a well-rounded education; American dream; the road won't be easy, but...YES, WE CAN!Tuesday-night McCain speech = Be afraid! Democrats will take your money and your job! Liberals want to throw a dinner party with al Queda and serve your babies for dessert! Fear! Fear! Fear! They hate us for our freedom! Democrats hate America! Obama and Hillary serve only their egos! George "Macaca" Allen is cool...Blah...blah...blah...Tas-tycakes. And with his awkward delivery, McCain even managed to make that inflammatory ramble sound like a snooze. I'm not so sure the Republicans' usual fear mongering is going to help them...

Potomac Primary: Hillary, Huckabee Hurting
2008-02-13 12:49:00 Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ) were the big winners in the ?Potomac Primary,? sweeping MD, VA and Washington, D.C. and winning by enormous margins over their opponents. Obama won MD with 60 percent of the vote to 36 percent for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and McCain bested Fmr. Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) 55 ...
Obama Crushes Clinton in Potomac Primaries
2008-02-13 07:34:00 He beat her by an average of thirty four percent. I figured that given the racial mixes involved in the races in question that he'd take MD and D.C. but that he'd eke out a tiny victory in VA or lose by five percent or less. Mainly I based that on the fact that he's done better in states that have caucuses, have a high percentage of Blacks, or a very low percentage of blacks. Simply put he does well in areas where racial tension is low or winners are more or less decided by debate. (Not my theory but I can't remember who to credit for that bit of pattern recognition.) In my experience (I'm from VA.) Virginia has just enough racial tension to have made it a hard state for me to predict. But what I had forgotten is my theory that the more Obama wins the more he will continue to win. I theorized that if Obama won an early primary and SC he'd prove that he was electable. Once that happened voters that were backing Clinton because she was the presumptive front runner would start si...

Post-Potomac Primary Musings (Republicans)
2008-02-13 04:59:00 With two of my toss-up states on the line tonight, along with DC (which I predicted for McCain), the Senator from Arizona has swept all three. If I'd been forced to definitively predict Virginia and Maryland, I would have leaned towards Huckabee in Virginia and towards McCain in Maryland. The fact that McCain won by almost 50,000 votes in Virginia is somewhat telling as far as the rest of my predictions go. After Huckabee's close run in Washington state, I was ready to move a couple toss up states into Huckabee's prediction column. Because of the results in Virginia, I cannot do so. The numbers out of Virginia also cause me to doubt my placement of Wisconsin, Nebraska, and South Dakota in Huckabee's column, though I am not ready to call them toss-up states. Here is what I'm left with as far as post-Super Tuesday states go.POST SUPER TUESDAY STATES:Louisiana-47 delegates (Feb 9) Huckabee-HUCKABEE WINKansas-39 delegates (Feb 9) Huckabee-HUCKABEE WINWashington Caucus- 19 delegate...
Obama Takes Delgate Lead...Sweeps Potomac Primaries!
2008-02-13 04:52:00 Barack Obama has come and swept the Potomac primaries in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. taking an even wider lead in delegates by over a hundred delegates. With 168 delegates at stake on Tuesday, Obama was set to build on the lead that he has gained in the past week in NBC News' delegate count over Clinton, who, according to her aides, is now depending on victories the big states of Ohio and Texas in her struggle to keep up in a race she once commanded.Clinton's campaign manager resigned over the weekend, and NBC News confirmed Tuesday a Washington Post report that deputy campaign manager Mike Henry resigned Monday. A source told NBC that Henry was leaving to allow new campaign manager Maggie Williams to organize her own team. [SOURCE]

Ice storm in final hours of Potomac Primary
2008-02-13 00:24:00 An ice storm is snarling local Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Md. area traffic in the final hours of the Potomac Primary, potentially influencing the outcome of key races. The most obvious potential effect may be in Virginia's Republican presidential primary. Late day turnout in John McCain's Northern Virginia stronghold will be negatively impacted while opponent Mike Huckabee's downstate support is escaping the ice. At least in Virginia, we may actually see that Huckabee miracle win, at least if one considers a massive freezing rain outbreak to be a miracle. What's less clear is how another key vote will be affected. While Barack Obama figures to be dominant across the Mid-Atlantic region in the Democratic primaries regardless, Al Wynn and Donna Edwards are considered neck-and-neck in Maryland's 4th congressional district race. Whichever candidate can get his or her supporters out on the glazing roads may emerge as the winner. Relevant link: Washington Times

Pre-Potomac Primary Musings (Republicans)
2008-02-12 05:33:00 Despite the pundits who claim that Mike Huckabee mathematically cannot win, I'm starting to think that John McCain is really in trouble. Over the weekend, Huckabee had some great victories. As I predicted, he won in Kansas and Louisiana. Kansas was a surprise to me in that he won a whopping 60% of the vote. On top of that, there was a contest in Washington state, where I earlier predicted that there was no chance whatsoever that Huck could win. I put it in McCain's column. As you read in the open letter I wrote to Washington's state Republican chairman, the election came down to only two hundred votes with only 87% counted. If Huckabee made it that close in liberal Washington state, I expect a shakeup for the Potomac Primaries in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia. In my predictions for the rest of the states, I had labeled Virginia and Maryland as toss-up states, and DC as a win for McCain. Based on how the voting goes there tomorrow (and I'm no longer certain that my predict...

Republican Potomac Primary irrelevant with Romney exit
2008-02-08 00:10:00 The Republican version of next Tuesday's Potomac Primary has been rendered essentially irrelevant with the exit of Mitt Romney form the presidential race. John McCain had bought ads on Virginia and Washington, D.C. television stations and arranged to speak tonight in Baltimore but the effort no longer seems necessary. Only Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are left as intraparty candidates to oppose him, neither man can amass enough Republican delegates to capture the nomination. At any rate, while Huckabee may capture some southern Virginia votes, McCain overwhelmingly figures to win the Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia presidential primaries. It's a relief to this blogger if no one else as now I can focus exclusively on the Democrats... and that Fassel guy.

Super Tuesday's implications for Potomac Primary
2008-02-06 14:43:00 The results of Super Tuesday have left next Tuesday's collective Potomac Primary votes as key to the Democratic race but just another step to the inevitable on the Republican side.Hillary Clinton stands today as the slight favorite in the national Democratic nomination fight after holding most of the northeastern states and scoring a big win in California. Obama's wins in the South, Connecticut, Missouri and the Mountain West kept him as a viable player. In terms of delegates, both candidates scored close to even numbers again, owing to proportional representation.Obama can't win the Democratic nomination next Tuesday but Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia can help him rebuild some positive momentum. On the other hand, what would hurt Obama and in turn help Clinton in the media spin cycle is if Obama gets upset in one of the Mid-Atlantic jurisdictions. With proportional representation again though, Obama and Clinton figure to compete for individual delegates across ...

Potomac Primary lessening importance for Republicans
2008-01-30 16:13:00 Results from the Republican race in Florida seem to have lessened the importance of the so-called Potomac Primary (a.k.a. the Mid-Atlantic Primary) of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia on February 12. John McCain's win of all Florida delegates makes him the clear leader of the Republican field with only Mitt Romney still viable as a national challenger. (Rudy Giuliani is withdrawing today and Mike Huckabee has failed to widen his appeal beyond his base.) For the Potomac Primary to still matter on the GOP side, Romney really needed to win Florida.----With most winner-take-all Super Tuesday states also set to align with McCain on February 5, the Republican nomination could be all but officially decided a week before area voters come into play. There is still realistic hope for a competitive race here on the Democratic side. Proportional representation in Democratic delegate allotments should keep Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama close to each other in the count even aft...

Burma on the Potomac: Another Step Deeper Into Tyranny
2007-10-20 20:03:00 by Chris Floyd One day, you'll open up your eyes and You'll see where you are. — Bob Dylan From USA Today: Three days after a 24-year-old college graduate spoke out on her immigration plight in USA TODAY, U.S. agents arrested her family — including her father, a Vietnamese man who once was confined to a "re-education" camp in his home country for anti-communist activities. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., who chairs the House immigration subcommittee, on Tuesday accused federal officials of "witness intimidation" for staging a pre-dawn raid on the home of Tuan Ngoc Tran. The agents arrested Tran, his wife and son, charging them with being fugitives from justice even though the family's attorneys said the Trans have been reporting to immigration officials annually to obtain work permits. Lofgren said she believes the family was targeted because Tran's eldest child, Tam Tran, testified before Lofgren's panel earlier this spring in support of l...

2006-12-13 03:15:02 Potomac House Almost Sold!At (almost) last!If you are a regular reader, then you know that since I moved in August, I've been trying to sell my house in Potomac, Maryland. It has been fruitless, and although several offers have come in, none had pawned out and I've been shelling out around $5,000 a month for mortgage and utilities on an empty house - Bummer! And so a short time ago I switched realtors, and reduced the house to make it irresistible, and put it on the market yesterday at a price that was around $275,000 lower than the original listing price of $875,000 (and that $875K price was already a price that was around $25,000 under the appraised price at the time). And in less than 24 hours an offer has come in for the new listing price of $699, 900 and hopefully we can get a ratified contract in the next 24 hours! Meanwhile it's still for sale, in case someone wants to take a crack at it!Details here. |
