Don?t Drink and Drive, Unless You Drink 12-Ounce Diet Cokes and Drive a Hyb
2008-06-02 19:20:00 We’ll, we dodged a bullet by leasing rather than buying our Toyota Highlander four years ago. We just turned it in, and even though we got hit with a $1200 disposal cost (including “excessive” wear and tear), at least we don’t have to worry about $4.00+ gasoline costs now that Karen is driving a ...

Q&A Potpourri
2008-05-18 05:59:00 I recently answered the following questions over at WikiAnswers. If you are knowledgeable in the faith, I suggest joining WikiAnswers and answering some questions yourself. It's a great way to witness to our Catholic faith. Now, on to the Q&A:What is compline? The Modern Catholic Dictionary, defines compline as: "the concluding hour of the Divine Office. Its origins in the West are commonly ascribed to St. Benedict (480-547). At first it was recited after the evening meal or before retiring. It now follows Vespers. As Night Prayer, it consists of a hymn, one or two psalms, a short reading from Scripture, a versicle and response, the Nunc Dimittis of Simeon, and a concluding prayer. (Etym. Latin completorium, complement)"When did the Holy Spirit originate? The Holy Spirit is God. This means that He has no beginning or end. Thus, there is no point in time in which we can say that the Holy Spirit first came to be and there is no point in time in which we can say that the Holy Spirit did...

Political potpourri (with apologies to John McLaughlin)
2008-03-05 16:33:00 We briefly interrupt this blog to bring you an update on political happenings that may or may not interest you: Ron Paul will serve another term in Congress. He handily won the primary last night for his Congressional seat in Texas, and he faces no Democratic opponent in the fall. Meanwhile, rumors abound that ...
Democratic Debate Potpourri
2008-02-27 07:01:00 A sampling of reaction to tonight's Democratic debate in Ohio:Chuck Todd:The entire debate had a very tense feel--a combination of two very competitive Democratic candidates and two very tough questioners. Both candidates were put on the spot and survived. Overall, it's hard to see this debate as changing the trajectory of this race. It was a contentious debate, but civil and both will probably be better nominees for it.It's hard to pick a winner--Clinton was more prepared but Obama survived and that's probably the name of the game for him at this late date in the campaign.Chris Cillizza:Neither candidate scored a knockout or even a knockdown. That's probably good news for Obama, who came into the debate on a roll and simply wanted to make it through the night without breaking that momentum.Clinton dominated much of the debate--for good or bad. She repeatedly sought to take the fight to Obama over his campaign tactics, his commitment to universal health care, his alleged naivet...

Homemade Potpourri: diy Project
2008-02-22 18:46:00 My current project for you is to make your own homemade Potpourri. If you read this post, follow the instructions and get the right materials for a chosen recipe, you will have your own potpourri in a matter of days. It will be the same quality of potpourri you would purchase in the store. Potpourri is essentially a personal pleasure. You will always choose your floral or herbal ingredients according to your own preferences for fragrance and color. You may like to attempt a blend to match a perfume you wear or a color match to a bedroom or living room scheme. And what more romantic a way to preserve petals from a Bridal or Mothers' Day bouquet? Some of the best scented additions to any Potpourri include Roses, Carnations, flowering Tobacco, Honeysuckle, Sweet Peas, night-scented Stocks, Orange Blossoms and Clove Carnations. Some of the prettiest additions that are nicest when dried: Lily of the Valley, Jasmine, Sweet Violets, Verbena, Hyacinth and Lavender. Always pick off...

Friday Potpourri
2008-02-08 19:18:00 Here comes whole mish mash of stuff, so get ready. First off, I don't want to alam anyone, but Steve Rosenbloom appears to know something we don't: This is supposed to be the day that the Mariners finally announce the Erik Bedard trade with Baltimore, which should be followed quickly by the Cubs finally making the deal for Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts. Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? I had hoped that deal was dead. Listen Hendry, and listen good. WE DON'T WANT ROBERTS IF IT MEANS TAKING DEROSA OUT OF THE LINEUP OR TRADING PIE OR GALLAGHER. Got it? Second, Yahoo is now allowing fantasy teams to register. There are still a few spots left in each league, and we can always start another league if we have enough interest. So check out the leagues here and, if you want to participate, speak now or forever hold your peace. Also, each league needs to choose a commissioner and figure out where they want to play. Most of us did Yahoo least season, and those draft dates fill up pr...
Q&A Potpourri
2008-01-30 02:03:00 A reader recently emailed me the following questions:Why has a woman to keep the baby after her rape? Will that remind her of a painful experience that she faced? The pregnancy and the resultant child that is born probably will remind her of the painful experience that she had to go through. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to carry with you for nine months a constant reminder of something you would rather forget. But, that is no reason to abort the baby. It's not the baby's fault that the mother was raped. Death is an unjust punishment for the innocent, and the baby certainly did nothing wrong. Of course, beyond that, we all have a right to life in virtue of being made in the image and likeness of the Living God. To take that child's life is to deny him/her a most basic and fundamental right, and it is to basically say that the mother's life is more important than the child's.Remember that the mother can always give the child up for adoption if she has to. There are als...

2008-01-09 15:58:00 I’m sure that some of my younger readers may not get the allusion to Shakespeare’s play, Henry VI (Part 2). Debate Potpourri
2007-09-28 06:25:00 A few thoughts from around the web for you to digest about last night's Democratic presidential debate in New Hampshire.David Yepsen:Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton finally started getting some pointed challenges from her opponents in a televised New Hampshire debate Wednesday night.Clinton stoically ignored the swipes, but the evening marked a sharpening of the dialogue in the Democratic nominating contest. It reflects the fact her poll numbers have started to climb and if the others want any chance of overtaking her, they need to keep that lead from getting larger. It wasn't a good night for Clinton. Her weakest moment in the debate was when she repeatedly ducked the sensitive question of just how she'd make Social Security sound and Joseph Biden pounced: "Presidents are supposed to lead," he said as he looked at her.Mark Halperin:John Edwards (Grade: A-): Successfully created one-on-one moments with Hillary Clinton on health care, Social Security, Iraq, and...

Apple Cinnamon Potpourri
2007-09-26 01:20:00 The holidays are coming fast and it will soon be time to venture into the attic to retrieve all the holiday decorations once again. Well don't forget to get an early start on making your Christmas Potpourri.......and you may also want to make some pretty gift jars of a scented potpourri for gift giving. They make a lovely gift and they are very inexpensive to make and take little time to put together. The rewards of a fragrant potpourri are so wonderful. There is nothing nicer than walking into someone's home on a cold winter's day and smelling the sweet and spicy aroma of an Apple Cinnamon potpourri. There are many variations of potpourri but my favorite is the apple cinnamon variety during the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays. I will share three recipes today for potpourri.....one of which will be with dry ingredients for display in a pretty bowl or open container, and the other two which will be for a simmering variety which can be left simmering on the stove top or in a sl...
Potpourri Of Weather
2007-09-24 04:58:00 Mother Nature continued her show of weather variety. This weekend we had at various times snow, rain, sleet, and hail. There were some thunderstorms and in the highest mountain areas some thunder-snow. A road over one of the high mountain passes was closed by snow for two days.We went from no wind to high wind and back to no wind. Occasionally there were even moments of sunshine. And it's been cold. Unseasonably cold. Temperatures are due to drop into the 20s tonight. I've actually had to turn the furnace on.There was a motorcycle rally in Reno and the weather got so bad there that a lot of the motorcyclists took shelter under the freeway bridges and watched the cars slip and slide on the wet and icy pavement and crash into one another.
