On the Yamuna. Mathura. Uttar Pradesh
2008-04-02 21:00:00 Women drying up saris alongside the sacred Yamuna river in Mathura. A long line of picturesque, pink ghats - with their steps leading to the water's edge, arched gateways and a temple, of course pink, extending along the right bank of the River Yamuna, emphasise the sacred character of the town of Mathura. The birth place of Lord Krishna, "the best known, best loved and most complex of Lord Vishnu's manifestations". Mathura is today an important place of pilgrimage. An ancient city, Mathura's strategic location at the crossroads of various trade routes - that went westwards to West Asia and the Roman Empire; northwards, via Taxila, Pushkalavati and Purushapur to Central Asia and the Silk Route and eastwards to China - ensured its position as a centre of trade and a meeting point for many different culturesOn the cover of this book: www.garzantilibri.it/default.ph-p?page=visu_libro&CPID...

Dividing UP: Harit Pradesh, Bundelkhand & Purvanchal
2008-02-17 19:02:00 Uttar Pradesh, the heart of India, and the great landmass with a population of 200 million may get trifurcated into three states (or even four states). And Lucknow may lose its political power that will get divided among Varanasi, Jhansi and Meerut, the capitals of the proposed states. It may take a couple of more years for the states to come into existence, but the growing regional aspirations among people in these regions and the politicians' vested interests will ultimately lead to the division of these states.Though UP is difficult to govern, given its size, the fact remains that smaller states have turned out to be bigger failures. As long as Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were part of greater Madhya Pradesh and greater Bihar, the situation in these regions was not as bad as today. Both the states that had huge mineral deposits and other natural resources, have become hotbeds of Naxalism. Corruption has grown by leaps and bounds and insurgency has made development impossible. These ...

Tribals of Arunachal Pradesh
2007-12-21 20:44:00 A Respectable Development? The Tribals of Arunachal Pradesh: Then and Now“. . . we are faced with the phenomenon of a rapid material, social, and educational development of a tribal society which has found a place in the modern world without so far losing its identity as a distinct ethnic entity.” -Christoph Von Furer-Haimendorf (approx. 1980)From time immemorial the until the later half of the twentieth century the people of the highlands of Arunachal Pradesh have lived in almost complete isolation and autonomy from the main body of Indian culture, economics, and civilization. But in 1944 and 1945 the Indian government began a policy of establishing contact with and administration of the tribes that lived in the Kameng and Subansiri districts of the region. The snowfall is considered early as in recent years Shimla has been receiving its first snowfall in January. Kalpa, the district headquarters of Kinnaur, recorded a minimum of - 4.1°C, while Patsio in Lahaul-Spiti shivered at -8.5°C. The rain upset the campaigning for Assembly elections as the leaders could not take the aerial route because of cloudy weather. The snow, which is considered as white manure for apple orchards, brought cheers to the apple growers as it will help provide the minimum chilling hours necessary for a good apple crop.
