In Praise Of The Electric Purple Nurple
2012-01-24 20:20:00
If you happened to be casually flipping channels over the past few nights at 10 p.m., there’s a decent chance you may have come across a scene right out of 24. There sat a man, stripped to his skivvies, being tortured in some rather creative ways. First, he had hot wax poured upon his… er… let’s go with “junk.” Then, he was doused with water and poked repeatedly in the chest with jumper cables attached to a car battery (this being the “electric purple nurple” referenced in the headline). Finally, he was covered with gasoline and set ablaze, all at the hands of a fiery redhead with vengeance on her mind. Now, it may seem hard to imagine an audience — let alone me, the author of a book on civility — gleefully cheering the audience on, and yet that’s exactly what viewers of the novella LA CASA DE AL LADO were doing as Adolfo (brilliantly played by David Chocarro) met his grisly (for TV) demise. You see, Adolfo was a very, very bad boy. And unlike American soaps, ...
Jamie Grace ~ Music your Foot Starts Tapping to!

The radio station I listen to all the time, started playing a song (“You Lead”) by Jamie Grace. When I got home I had to check out who Jamie Grace is. I tell you, her music will make your feet tap (and you will not be able to stop!)… I just downloaded her entire album ...

In praise of real, live, actual Christmas cards
2011-12-22 09:00:00
Don't send me no form letters or e-cards, especially at this time of year. I LOVE sending and receiving real, live, paper Christmas cards. There's something about going out to the mailbox and finding an envelope with my name and address hand-written on it ... It's so rare these days. And the number of cards we receive is dwindling every year, unfortunately. Some people claim that e-cards save paper and postage, and therefore are better for the environment. Maybe so, but for the enjoyment factor, you might as well not bother. You can't enjoy an e-card the same as a paper card. You can't display it on your mantle, for starters. An e-card is nothing but a gesture,  not the personalized mini-gift of a real card, especially if it's hand-made. Above is a photo of the cards I made this year. I used a photo of a frosty fern I shot in our garden in November, and got them printed through an online company called Pinhole Press. [If you're Canadian, don't use them. They ship thro...

The Baffling Bloated Praise for 'Bridesmaids'
2011-05-14 16:11:00
I feel like I'm in some kind of modern retelling of The Emperor's New Clothes.  Why am I the only one who sees the truth here, that Bridesmaids is simply not a movie worthy of a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Why are the critics so afraid of saying anything negative at all about this movie?  It feels very patronizing, like, "Oh, this is a lady movie and we need to like this lady movie so all the ladies will get off our backs about never promoting or producing any lady movies.  We're throwing you a bone here, ladies (Ha ha, bone).  Now you can sit back and watch us blow shit up for the rest of the summer."Some critics really overstated the importance...
Voices of Praise
2011-05-14 15:00:00
I was talking with Number 2 son and I related an experience I had had quite some time ago.  He asked me if I had written a blog about it.  I realized I hadn't, so perhaps now's the time.I was working the Christmas season at a large retailer a few years ago.  My husband's union went on strike for the first time in all the years he has worked there.  It was scary times.  Our daughter was in Catholic high school and our property taxes had just doubled.  I didn't know what we were going to do.I left work late one evening and I called my husband to see what was happening.  He was excited!  The negotiations were going well...
In Praise of Picture Books
2011-03-31 21:58:00
There's this funny scene in Bridget Jones' Diary where she goes to a dinner party at the home of one of her "smug married" friends. Several babies are crawling around, not even walking yet, and Bridget notices that the babies are wearing the infant equivalent of a g-string. The mums are so desperate to compete in the potty-training Olympics, that they insist that their under-one is just fine without a diaper! Of course one of the babies poops on the floor and no one will take the blame. It's parental competition taken to the realm of the ridiculous.Fortunately, most of my immediate peer group accept the necessity of a diaper. But I do see this parental competition trend creeping into...

True Freedom Through Thankful Praise
2010-11-22 14:55:00
– by Jennifer Fuentes When you hear the word, “freedom,” what comes to mind? We talk of freedom in conjunction with news of the war on terror. Freedom involves our speech, our attire, and our rights.  We are aware that freedom comes with a price tag; but somehow, one important freedom often gets overlooked: our freedom to worship. Believers have a freedom to worship that no one can take away from us.  Jesus died to pay for our freedom – regardless of our nation, tongue, or tribe.  I’m not talking about the freedom our country gives us to gather for worship. I’m talking about the freedom God provides, by His Holy Spirit, to enter into heavenly worship — worship that is experiential and revelatory. When the Israelites were freed from the Babylonian captivity, their heartfelt desire was for worship to be restored.  The old men remembered the first temple — their first experience with God — and as they saw the new temple being built, they were fille...
Not surprisingly, Al Qaeda heaps praise on Fort Hood jihadi Nidal Hasan

Imagine that, terrorists praising terrorists. Fort Hood shooting: Al Qaeda now portrays Nidal Hasan as terrorism star Al Qaeda now hails Army Maj. In praise of the Blago jury "holdout"
2010-08-27 19:01:00
Juror JoAnn Chiakulas has taken a lot more than her share of lumps for being the "holdout" in the 11-to-1 verdict on the most serious charge against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich in his corruption trial--the selling of Barack Obama's former Senate seat. In her first interview, she described what it felt like as being the only person to take her stand and stick to it. She said she had come under some pressure to conform with everyone else's view, but that she could not have lived with herself if she had voted against her conscience and the facts as she saw them.   For that, she's getting worked over in the comments section (e.g. "she's an idiot"), but in my...
Democrats at Illinois state fair praise themselves for cleaning up their me
2010-08-19 00:06:00
It's as if Republicans were to blame for giving us Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Here is a week worth of chuckles in which: House Speaker Michael Madigan sets the Democratic strategy for the coming elections: Face it head on. Point out that Democrats threw him out of office. (But ignore the fact that it was the Democratic Machine and all of its players that gave us Blagojevich in the first place. What's to stop them from giving us more of the same?)Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) took up the theme, pointing out that the Senate impeachment trial "resulted in a unanimous verdict" against Blagojevich, and therefore "I think we did our job." Great strategy. Make the voters forget about Blago by referring...

Obama Needs Articulate American Ideals, Praise Iranian Protestors

Like many Americans on both sides of the political aisle, I follow the events in Iran sensing we are witnessing something of great historical significance. TIME Quotes White House Official to Praise Obama?s Success
2009-04-03 01:18:00
In a “news” article on the success of the G20 summit, Time magazine called it a success, lavishing praise of the President of the United States: Yet as American officials tell it, the real hero of the hour, proving his mettle at his first summit, was President Barack Obama. The remaining point of disagreement, which threatened ...
“Singing” the praise of music in education.
2009-03-20 18:44:00
Science Daily (March 16, 2009), “sings” the praise of music education in improving reading skills. The premise is not new. According to the article, “Children exposed to a multi-year program of music involving training in increasingly complex rhythmic, tonal, and practical skills display superior cognitive performance in reading skills compared with their non-musically trained peers, according to a study published in the journal Psychology of Music.”Simply put, an organized music education program will enhance reading skills in students.According to authors Joseph M. Piro and Camilo Ortiz from Long Island University, USA, data from this study will help to clarify the role of music study on cognition and shed light on the question of the potential of music to enhance school performance in language and literacy.Studying children in two U.S. elementary schools, one of which routinely trained children in music and one that did not, Piro and Ortiz aimed to investigate the hypothe...
More Inky/Obama ?Damning With Faint Praise? On Iraq
2009-03-15 21:27:00
The following editorial appeared in today?s Philadelphia Inquirer, including this excerpt?President Obama's first 50 days in office ended with doubled-barreled shotgun blasts from conservatives, who accused him of not only reneging on his pledge to be bipartisan, but - horror of horrors - taking the United States down the primrose path to socialism.Ooooh, scary stuff. Of course, neither charge is true.First of all, any nation that provides Medicaid, food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and a host of other equally valuable programs that redistribute tax dollars has already walked more than a few steps down the lane to socialism. Whether it's called that or not.As for being bipartisan, what else but bipartisan would you call a president who has drawn the ire of many in his own party for pushing an Iraq withdrawal plan that's not much different from his Republican predecessor's and an education plan that has cringing teachers unions buying bottles of aspirin??An Ir...
They Keep Coming to Bury Reagan, Not to Praise Him
2009-03-07 18:00:00
For the past twenty-seven years at least (perhaps longer), Democrats and their allies in the media have been trying to write the obituary for Ronald Reagan’s ideas. The latest to do so is former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich who claimed that the very unveiling of President Obama’s budget sounds the death knell for Reaganomics: It ...

praise song for the day | inauguration poem
2009-01-24 13:37:00
Each day we go about our business, walking past each other, catching each other?s eyes or not, about to speak or speaking. All about us is noise. All about us isnoise and bramble, thorn and din, eachone of our ancestors on our tongues.Someone is stitching up a hem, darninga hole in a uniform, patching a tire, repairing the things in need of repair.Someone is trying to make music somewhere, with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum, with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.A woman and her son wait for the bus.A farmer considers the changing sky.A teacher says, Take out your pencils. Begin. We encounter each other in words, wordsspiny or smooth, whispered or declaimed, words to consider, reconsider. We cross dirt roads and highways that markthe will of some one and then others, who saidI need to see what?s on the other side.I know there?s something better down the road.We need to find a place where we are safe.We walk into that which we cannot yet see.Say it plain: that many have died for this...
Flakes of Snow that Praise the Lord

Snowflakes as you’ve never seen them before. These snowflake photos were taken by Kenneth Libbrecht of CalTech, using a specially-designed snowflake photomicroscope. Rookie QBs receive praise
2008-06-09 06:00:00
Rookie quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn have been receiving praise from Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy after this past week's OTA practice open to the public. In a press conference following the practice McCarthy, in particular, singled out Brohm for the progress he is making."I'll tell you, Brian Brohm is as sharp a young quarterback that I have been around," McCarthy is quoted as saying, "and that's a big statement because I have been fortunate enough to coach some very bright quarterbacks in their first and second year in the league. I have been very impressed with the way he picks up the scheme and the way he is able to communicate it."In an interview with Aaron Rodgers that aired on ESPN's SportsCenter over the weekend, Rodgers said that he didn't think there would be a quarterback controversy with Brohm joining the Packers.McCarthy also had a few comments about Flynn and the team in general during his press conference."Matt is getting much better," said ...

Fatboy Slim-1998-Praise you [Maxi Cd]
2008-05-31 18:32:00
The Fatboy Slim album Better Living Through Chemistry marked Cook's emergence into the big time. Filled with retro samples and funk-laden grooves, the album was among the first in the then-new big beat sound. It also spawned one Top 40 UK hit, "Everybody Needs a 303". After Cook's remix of Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha" topped the charts, such musical heavy hitters as Madonna and U2 asked him to produce for them. Fatboy Slim's next work was the single "The Rockafeller Skank," released prior to the album You've Come a Long Way, Baby, both of which were released in 1998 to rave reviews. This album also produced the single "Praise You", which also became a major dance hit, giving Cook his first UK solo number one. Let Us Now Praise Famous Suicides
2008-05-30 20:30:00
by Christopher Ketcham Suicide has gotten a bad rap. In our culture of endless imbecile optimism, the culture of self-help and medicated despair, we have lost respect for the suicide. For my part, I have on a few bad nights thought of suicide but never seriously; more contemplatively, as in: death is of course the other half of our equation, a partner always growing stronger. I have a pistol here at home: how to use it effectively? In the temple? Or up through the palate, directly into the brain? Coward thoughts because anodyne, without the context of real pain you havent lived the long deaths of places like Iraq, the Congo, Colombiathe murmurings of one whod like to have this balls-out vision of death and reflect on it as if it were cake. Still, to call the suicide a coward is an insult. The suicide enters the greatest unknown in human history. He steps willfully toward an abyss that the priests and philosophers build gossamer webs to conceal. Schopenh...
