Jaramillo preaching patience, injuries forcing youth movement
2011-05-31 06:16:00
OBP without walks?Rudy Jaramillo wants the Cubs to be more patient. Good to hear. The most potent Cubs offense in recent history was the 2008 edition. That was a team that could take a walk and work a pitcher. It was a team that could get into the opposing team's bullpen by the sixth inning, a lot like you see on television when you watch a Yankees/Red Sox game. The Cubs have been hitting, currently second at in the league in batting average (.276) and they are third in the league in on-base percentage (.331) , but last in the league with only 140 walks as a team. Jaramillo discussed his philosophy on taking walks when working with the team. "We always talk about being patient,...
Preaching to the Choir
2010-06-06 02:55:00
I started blogging through the book of Matthew this year, reading and ruminating on who exactly this Jesus person is who showed up out of nowhere on the planet and conducted a whirlwind ministry of healing, spiritual teaching, controversy and subversion, then died publicly and miserably, coming alive again a few days later and thus ...

That is my longing for our day—and for you.  That God would raise up thousands of broken-hearted, Bible-saturated preachers who are dominated by a sense of the greatness and the majesty and the holiness of God, revealed in the gospel of Christ crucified and risen, and reigning with absolute authority over every nation and ...
What I Mean by Preaching :: Desiring God

Preaching is Expository Exultation. This clip is a good illustration of the importance of preaching. It was from Saturday night’s message. We saw Piper live at the north campus Sunday morning, and the video from that would have been even more passionate! I trust you’ll all enjoy this clip and rejoice ...

Preach What?s True And Precious
2008-10-21 17:01:00
Good thoughts for preachers from John Piper… A word to preachers.  Truth and falsehood is a good pair of categories to use when deciding what to preach.  Speak truth not falsehood. But there is another crucial pair of categories.  God tells Jeremiah that he must use this pair if he would be faithful: Therefore thus says the Lord: ...

UK: Christian ministers ordered to stop preaching in muslim areas
2008-06-02 00:08:00
Islam continues its invation and jihad on the United Kingdom. This time they target Christian Ministers. A police community support officer ordered two Christian preachers to stop handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham. The evangelists say they were threatened with arrest for committing a “hate crime” and were told they risked ...
Prophetic Preaching vs. Political Sound Bites
2008-05-07 16:43:00
In 1972, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright became pastor of an 87-member church, Trinity United Church of Christ, in Chicago. Three and half decades later its membership has grown to over six thousand, making it the largest church in the United Church of Christ denomination. In addition to Sunday services of worship, Trinity United Church of Christ supports numerous ministries in the poor neighborhood that surrounds it: tutoring for kids, programs for women?s health, ministry to people with HIV/AIDS, providing food for the poor, prison ministry, a senior citizens home and others. From the beginning of his ministry Reverend Wright was determined that the Church at worship would also be the Church that served the least of the brothers and sisters in the world that surrounds it. That support reaches beyond its immediate neighborhood, a fact made clear by its giving over $3.7 million the broader UCC mission and ministry funds from 2003 to 2007. Notably the United Church of Christ is now stan...
I keep preaching Fair Game because I have nothing else to complain about?

I've been having an email discussion with the person who runs http://scientologymyths.wordpre-ss.com, a pro-Scientology site by a Scientologist ("Louanne") that pays shallow and transparent lip-service to neutrality. The things she are saying are just ridiculous. After writing off numerous cases against Scientology - e.g., the case against Scientology in Belgium, Bob Minton, Gregg ...

Tomorrow morning, in the first of a three-part Spring Spiritual Checkup, the plan is to take our temperature. Here’s how I’m approaching it. Jimmy Carter: I?ve seen this kind of preaching my whole life
2008-04-29 18:28:00
Referring to the hateful black-liberation, anti-American preaching by Jeremiah Wright. Carter lumps all black churches together as Wright has done in previous speeches and then goes on to say that racism is still a huge issue in this country… note to Jimmy: It’s a huge deal because “wack-a-doodle’s-221; like you and Jeremiah Wright will do/say anything you ...
Preaching Practice
2008-04-22 01:31:00
I promised earlier that I would republish my first sermon here once delivered... I've had to amend a challenge at the end for reasons that you will see. However I'd like to think that the way I've reformatted that challenge for use on the Internet, kills several birds with one stone. If you aren't up for a read tonight... then in the words of Tim Bisley from Spaced... "Skip to the end!"I say that because there is still something important at the end that everyone on here should be willing to do irrespective of personal belief. Anyway, for our sermon we were asked to preach on Luke 7:36-8:3 and here was what I felt led to share:When you read the story of the sinful woman anointing Jesus, you feel there are certain parallels with the tale of Cinderella. There you have a woman who is frowned upon by those around her, who nevertheless seeks out the hero because she wants to be with him. At the end of the Bible story and the fairy tale, both women are exalted despite their position in...

"Jeremiah Wright and Black Prophetic Preaching," by Debra J. Mumford
2008-04-10 17:14:00
In March 2008, sermon snippets of Barack Obama?s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, dominated news headlines. In these snippets of his sermons, Wright is heard giving harsh criticism of the United States? foreign policy and treatment of some of its citizens.Whether or not one agrees with Wright, it is helpful to have more background about the black prophetic preaching tradition from which he comes. It is this tradition that has spiritually and emotionally supported and sustained many African Americans since the days of slavery. In this essay, author and homiletics scholar Debra Mumford provides Thoughtful Christian readers a brief background of the long tradition of African American prophetic preaching and encourages Christians not to be misled by how some of the media are choosing to portray a black prophetic preacher.Debra J. Mumford is Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. For purchase information, click here.

"I don't want yes-men around me. I want everyone to tell me the truth, even if it costs them their job." -Samuel Goldwyn, famed Hollywood producer and studio founder, Samuel Goldwyn booksOne of the greatest benefits of blogging is the interactive nature of it. You write a post; people read it; and, with any luck, they are inspired to leave a comment. The ability of readers to have a voice and participate creates a dialogue that helps facilitate learning. Some comments support the author's point of view, while others disagree. As a blog publisher, I feel it is important to post all comments whether they agree with me or not. When I was a District Manager at Starbucks, I had a mentor who regularly evaluated my hiring decisions. He believed strongly in diversity of thought and leadership style. He often asked me if I was creating an environment in which leaders on my team felt comfortable disagreeing with me; otherwise, he said, "You're just preaching to the choir." His point wa...

Speed Preaching
2008-02-24 00:06:00
I spent the best part of today at the preaching workshop that I touched upon in my previous post. During April and May I'll be brushing up on my skills (sure, I technically "preach online" a lot, but it is only on very rare occasions that I get the opportunity to "go live" in front of a crowd of people), I'll be hearing speakers talk on various aspects of the subject... will test preach to others on the course and eventually be set loose on the unsuspecting public in an unfamiliar church.Today was pretty much a foretaste of what to expect... and it was quite fast paced. In the morning we heard a tale that had parallels with the Easter story. It was about a boy who becomes withdrawn from his group of friends... and who when confronted by his concerned father, reveals that he is embarrassed about his mother... who had scarred hands. The father shares with his son, how his mother became scarred. When he was two years old his mother left him in the front room for two minutes... and he ...

Preaching social apathy in living room seminaries
2007-12-21 18:53:00
The above case of Al-Huda and its effect on upper class Pakistanis highlights a problem theism can cause. It can make believers as Aneela puts it "content with their lot": the idea that, indulging in religious practices is good(hence lowering motivation for contributing to the solution of social problems) while at the same time nullifying the guilt of not doing anything concrete about, or even highlighting social issues such as (as in this case) gender and economic inequality.

Quote to Note 1: Theology and Preaching

Painful Preaching Advice, pt 2
2007-10-11 12:30:00
As I mentioned yesterday, I've recently had some mentoring time with my Pastor. It's really been a great experience and I'm grateful for it.Today, I thought I'd share with you all some other advice that Pastor Bill shared with me. And to be honest with you, it put the final squish on a box that I had placed God in.For those of you who don't know me, I have a strong Assembly of God (Pentecostal) background. One of the things that we as Pentecostals like to emphasis is the "flowing" of the Spirit (as in reference to the one doing the preaching). I can remember pipe dreams, while in Bible school, of being "so spiritual" that one day, I would walk up on the platform, flip open my Bible and begin speaking the Word of God without any study and/or preparation.Once I actually stepped out into ministry, that bubble burst. I realized that that was what it was, a pipe dream. Now do I believe that it's possible to do what I described? Absolutely. But do I think that doing that on a weekly ...
Painful Preaching Advice
2007-10-10 14:15:00
As most of you out there in cyberland know, I'm a youth pastor.I love being a youth pastor, by the way. I honestly never thought I'd say that. But I love it. People ask me what I feel my calling is... and my response is: "to serve the Body." And definitely right here, right now, Jesus wants me to be a youth pastor... and if He wants me to be a youth pastor till I'm 75, then so be it, I will. But that's a whole different blog... for a whole different day.Anyways.My Pastor, Bill Bolin (an awesome man of God by the way - I couldn't ask for a better mentor/boss/spiritual-father)..-. sat me down a couple of weeks ago for a mentoring session. I'm currently going through a "mentoring class" to complete my degree... Anyways, long story short... he offered some wisdom in the area of preaching and areas where he thought I could improve. To be honest with you... I thought I was a pretty good preacher. Obviously, I'm no where near Steve Hill, T.D. Jakes... or Jesus for that matter... but y...
Preaching The Gospel
2007-10-09 21:33:00
"For you see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord." (1Corinthians 1:26-31) Isn't it amazing that an Almighty God has chosen to save sinful men, and use them for His service. Many times Christians start to get the "big head", and think of themselves more highly than they ought. As if, they're doing God a big favor, by offering Him their great talents and abiliti...

Preaching Opportunity
2007-09-10 21:39:00
This past Saturday, we had the opportunity to attend services at Living Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson, SC, where Bro. Doug Taylor is the pastor. In the morning services we were able to hear several preachers we knew such as, Bro. Paul Sisk, Bro. Jack Simpson and Bro. Chris, a friend of the family. Then, they took a break for lunch. In the afternoon service, we heard Bro. Bill Vaughn and then several young preachers. Toward the end of the service I had the opportunity to preach for about 5 min. I really enjoyed the services and I thank the Lord for allowing me to preach. ~Caleb~
Resources for Postmodern Preaching
2007-09-07 21:27:00
Dr. David Teague, a former missionary who teaches at Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Massachusetts, has started the website Postmodern Preaching as a resource for pastors and others who find the old methods of Christian apologetics irrelevant to a culture with postmodern ideas about truth and knowledge. The essays on this site are succinct and readable, providing a good starting place for the would-be evangelist. Here are some highlights from his article on Cultural Pluralism: In the postmodern world, all beliefs and belief systems are considered to be relative. We are told that there is no absolute truth. Faith is just a matter of private opinion. One person's faith is no more valid or unique than anyone else's. So, how do we preach in a world that is culturally pluralistic? We do so by being aware of: 1. The spirituality of postmodern people2. The uniqueness of Christianity 3. The need to be spiritually faithful yet also socially tolerant****... Cultural pluralism...suggests tha...

Wichita is home to the infamous late-term abortionist, George Tiller. Tiller is known throughout the world as "Tiller the Killer." He not only kills late-term babies but, if parents so desire, he will baptize the babies before he burns them to ashes in his (on premises) incinerator.
