Preakness Stakes

17/05/2008: 133rd Preakness Stakes (Baltimore - Horse Racing Triple Crown 2
2008-05-18 14:53:00
Not once but twice, jockey Kent Desormeaux sneaked a peak to see if anyone was gaining on Big Brown. His big bay colt ran away with the Preakness on Saturday and now is pointed squarely down the path toward the Triple Crown. The 3-year-old with the perfect record heads for the Belmont Stakes (ABC, June 7) in three weeks as the fourth horse this decade to try for the triple, a sweep last accomplished by Affirmed in 1978. The last to try was Smarty Jones in 2004.
Big Brown easily triumphs in 2008 Preakness Stakes
2008-05-18 01:55:00
Big Brown overcame a field of eleven other contenders with the greatest of ease to win the 2008 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico galloping away. The impressive enough 5 and a 1/4 length win could have been much more had jockey Kent Desormeaux not eased off to save him for the Belmont Stakes. The 133rd Preakness Stakes win marks the second Triple Crown jewel win in a row for Big Brown after a similarly impressive Kentucky Derby triumph. Only the Belmont and a confrontation with track fave Casino Drive, a major threat according to the radio analysts, stands between Big Brown and Triple Brown glory. In a bizarre twist, Big Brown paid $2.40 to win but $2.60 to place (1st or 2nd), a statistical incongruity that showcased just how many casual fans bet Big Brown to win. If only a greater fraction of them had remembered to bet Big Brown to place as well, they could have actually made more than a little money.----Relevant link: Baltimore Sun

Big Brown Wins 133rd Preakness Stakes
2008-05-18 00:13:00
Big Brown won the 133rd running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico racetrack in Maryland. He is now two-thirds of the way to horse racings sacred Triple Crown. Big Brown, starting from the #7 spot, had no trouble in winning easily. BB was still fresh as he was cooling down. Barring an injury or illness Big Brown is likely to succeed in winning the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes takes place on June 7th and will be aired on ABC.
Big Brown favored in potential pre-slots Preakness Stakes
2008-05-17 11:24:00
Big Brown enters the 2008 Preakness Stakes as a heavy, near prohibitive favorite to win its second straight Triple Crown race. The horse proved dominant two weeks ago at the Kentucky Derby, pulling away from the field despite a far outside #20 post position. The result is that the vast remainder of the Derby field was held off by its various ownership from running in Baltimore, leaving a weak field for Big Brown to presumably dominate. Post time for the Preakness is officially 6:15 p.m. with race, pre-race & post-race coverage on NBC television (WRC/4, WBAL/11) and the Horse Racing Radio Network (WBAL/1090, WXTR/730, WWXT/92.7, WWXX/94.3). ----What seems far less predictable than the Preakness is the outcome of the Maryland slots debate that lies in the backdrop of the big race. Approval for a November referendum that would allow for the limited legalization of slot machine gambling is being highly sought both by most leading Maryland politicians and the horse racing industry. The di...

The Triple Crown Goes Back on the Shelf and A Rivalry

My toes were ‘curlin’ with excitement while I was watching the stretch run of the Preakness last Saturday and wondering if and when my chosen steed would ever change his leads. He finally did, and I suppose I can offer myself a pat on the back for picking Curlin to win, and even more for narrowing the competition down to him ...

Preakness Prognostications
2007-05-19 13:30:00
War Admiral was not the only casualty of the 1938 Pimlico Special, which became the famous match race immortalized in the movie ‘Seabiscuit.’ The Pimilico infield’s slight promontory, known as Old Hilltop, on which hundreds of thousands trainers and racing fans had stood through 67 years of racing was leveled in April of 1938, so that it would not obstruct the ...
