Watch out for financial predators
2008-08-07 17:00:00
As if homeowners struggling with debt and at the threat of foreclosure don?t have enough to deal with, they still have to watch their backs for financial predators. With financial problems on their plate, predators see suffering homeowners as vulnerable and often use the opportunity to take advantage of them.
Blackhawks and Predators Free Agent Needs
2008-06-30 01:08:00
Blackhawks: There have been rumblings about the Blackhawks' interest in adding pop to the lineup, with a puck-moving defenseman on their shopping list. They could go high, after Brian Campbell, or get a younger, less expensive option like John-Michael Liles. The plan is to continue letting a strong young talent base mature and to supplement it with compatible talent. Predators: Don't expect too

Troubled Homeowners: Beware the Predators
2008-05-12 16:39:00
by Roberta Murphy The real estate predators are always there–in good times and in bad. There are whispered stories in real estate circles of certain escrow and loan officers who, in the heady days of real estate, slipped deeds into the stacks of papers homeowners were signing as they refinanced their homes. The deed, of course, moved ...
US Set Guards Against Predators, Bullies in Facebook
2008-05-09 19:23:00
The world's second largest social network Facebook (with 70 million active users worldwide) has entered into an agreement with US officials wherein it will add over 40 new safeguards to protect its young users from sexual predators and cyberbullies. A similar agreement was signed by the world's largest social network MySpace (with 200 million users worldwide) in January this year.US officials from Washington DC and 49 states have signed the agreement; Texas hasn't endorsed it in much the same way it did not -- the agreement with MySpace.Facebook has agreed to adopt precautionary measures such as banning convicted sex offenders from the site, limiting older users' ability to contact subscribers under 18, even participating in the task force that was set up in January to find ways of verifying users' ages and identities. To enlist, Facebook has agreed to:# ensure that companies offering services on its site comply with its safety and privacy guidelines# keep tobacco and alcohol ad...
Ward Of The State
2008-05-09 11:46:00
After denying it and enlisting talk radio show listeners to support him, former SF KGO talk radio host and priest Bernie Ward faces five years in the pen for admitting kiddie porn. Ward's lawyer still insists he was merely "play-acting." Au contraire. SF's ABC7 finds Bernie's been a "predator" for years. SF Gate: Bernie Ward, the most prominent liberal voice on Bay Area talk radio for more than two decades, admitted Thursday to distribution of child pornography by e-mail in a plea deal that will send him to federal prison for at least five years. Ward, 57, a former Roman Catholic priest, was a fixture on KGO-AM 810 for three hours every weeknight, known in recent years for his fervent denunciations of President Bush and the war in Iraq during his news talk show. He also hosted "God Talk," a Sunday morning program on religion, and was a prolific fundraiser for the station's charity drives.Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe at one point Ward and/or his surrogates suggested Ge...

Miami, Florida USA By Alicia Rook April14 ,2007I thought you would find the following very interesting. Did you know that anyone can call Elder Services, and this in turn could set in motion a chain of events which could land an elder person 55+ in front of a Probate judge who can have this person declared incompetent? This judge has the power to take all of the elder persons? constitutional rights away, name a court appointed corporate guardian, their attorneys, caregiver personnel, which could cost everything he or she owns [bank accounts, savings accounts, financial portfolio, social security, IRS's, 401k's, plus all of your real property [home, furnishings, cars]], everything!
Checklist for Predators
2008-04-10 01:55:00
The below are excerpts from HOW TO SPOT A DANGEROUS MAN; A must-read book from a respected friend of EOPC - Sandra Brown, MA. We can't stress enough how valuable reading this book, even AFTER the relationship is. Sandra offers many services to victims HERE. She "gets it" where many counselors simply do not.So see how the cyberpath/ predator you know stacks up:excerpts from HOW TO SPOT A DANGEROUS MAN:The other type of emotionally unavailable man is unavailable due to his relationship (or relationships) with another woman (or women). These guys are never really committed to a woman. They don’t see any relationship as necessarily permanent, including marriage - even if they give lip service to being “deeply committed” to the woman they are with at the moment. In truth, however, they don’t truly value their intimate relationships or take them seriously, because they are merely “playing,” even though engagement or marriage hardly seems like something to “play” at. The...

French women 'are the sexual predators now'
2008-03-09 21:14:00
French women are becoming increasingly assertive in their sexual habits, while one-in-five younger French men "has no interest in sex", according to one of the most comprehensive surveys of the nation's love lives. Women now have more than twice as many partners as they did in the 1970s, according to the study by the French Aids research agency, which is backed by the government. One of the biggest changes in recent years, according to the report, was that male and female sexual behaviour had become increasingly similar. "The good old dichotomy (male predators, females patiently awaiting the warrior's return in front of the cave entrance) is in big trouble", said Le Nouvel Observateur. Female sexual emancipation has been a hot topic in France ever since President Nicolas Sarkozy met Carla Bruni, the Italian model and singer. The couple married last month. Ms Bruni recently declared monogamy "terribly boring" and spoke in relaxed fashion about her numerous past conquests, including...

Online Predators - Set Internet Safety Rules for Children
2008-02-24 02:48:00
The Internet is an amazing tool, available for use by millions upon millions of people every day. Unfortunately, just as many people abuse the resources provided by the Internet. Online predators abuse the Internet by using it to stalk vulnerable people, collect personal information, and plan their attacks. Before giving your child Internet access, have a conversation about both the benefits and dangers of the Internet. Lay down a set of rules to govern your child's use of the Internet and be sure to include the following:Explain the importance of keeping personal information private. Explain what personal information is. Younger children may not understand that addresses, phone numbers, school names, and parent names should be kept private.Keep the computer in a public place. Children should not need privacy while using the Internet to network with friends or while they are doing homework. You should be able to monitor your child's Internet use at all times.Make sure your child kn...
Internet sex predators 'aren't who you think'
2008-02-19 04:38:00
By Julie Steenhuysen in ChicagoFeb 19, News.com.auDESPITE popular myths, the typical online predator does not pose as a teen and lure victims into face-to-face meetings to abuse them, according to new research.Rather, they tend to be adults who make their intentions of a sexual encounter quite clear to vulnerable young teens who often believe they are in love with the predator. And contrary to the concerns of many parents and politicians, the US researchers found that social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace do not appear to expose teenagers to greater risks."A lot of the characterisations that you see in internet safety information suggests that sex offenders are targeting very young children and using violence and deception against their victims," said Janis Wolak of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire."Especially since social networking sites became popular, people are suggesting that these offenders are using information to st...

France warns SocGen predators, shares jump
2008-01-30 13:25:00
By Andrew Hurst and Tim Hepher PARIS (Reuters) - France warned foreign banks on Tuesday not to try to grab control of Societe Generale as it reels from losses blamed on a rogue trader, but shares in the bank spiked higher on takeover speculation. "The government is determined that Societe Generale remains a great French bank," Prime Minister Francois Fillon told parliament. Earlier Fillon told reporters: "The government will not let Societe Generale be the object of hostile raids by other companies." SocGen shares ended the day up 10.4 percent at 78.45 euros, spurred on by a rumour that rival France's biggest listed bank, BNP Paribas, might launch a bid. BNP, which made a failed bid for SocGen in 1999, declined to comment on the market talk. Analysts, however, were sceptical that a bid for SocGen was imminent because the bank had not been mortally wounded. "SocGen has taken a hit, but it does not need to be more than a flesh wound," said Si...

Chameleons change colour to seduce potential mates, not to escape predators
2008-01-29 11:15:00
Chameleons have evolved the ability to change their colours due to the need to rapidly signal to other chameleons, and not the need to camouflage from predators, according to a new study.   University of Melbourne researchers Devi Stuart-Fox and Adnan Moussalli say that the dramatic colour changes of chameleons are tailored to aggressively display to specific competitors and to seduce potential mates.   Their findings suggest that the evolution of colour change serves to make chameleons more noticeable, which is inconsistent with the camouflage hypothesis.   The amount of colour change possible varies between species.   During the study, Stuart-Fox and Moussalli placed two male chamilions on a branch opposite each other, and measured the colour variation.   Upon comparison between species that can change colour dramatically and species that only change slightly, and considering their evolutionary interrelationships, the researchers came to the conclusion t...

Game 49: Predators 4, Avalanche 0
2008-01-23 14:51:00
photo courtesy of David Zalubowski/AP I only watched the Predators play the Avalanche twice this season.  The first time was live in Nashville, and the second time was last night.  In both cases, the Avs got shut out 4-0.  In the two games I missed, Colorado won. Clearly, I am never allowed to watch the Avs play the Predators ever again, no matter what. Aside from my own personal jinx, Colorado took a giant dump on the ice last night, and the defense abandoned Jose Theodore pretty much completely.  The Avs took plenty of shots on goal, but a superb Dan Ellis (who?) shut them down on every chance and made it look far too easy.  The combination of no defense and a brick wall between them and the opposing goal was just too much for the Avs to overcome. But, while the D (especially Karlis Skrastins, who looked awful) channeled the Miami Dolphins, Theo isn't free of blame.  In fact, at least three of the four goals he allowed were stoppable.  It lo...
Game 49: Predators At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread
2008-01-22 19:41:00
I could talk about injuries, or Peter Forsberg, or injuries to Peter Forsberg, but I'm tired of all that stuff.  Instead, I want to talk about the playoffs. The playoffs?! Yes, the playoffs. Right now, the Avs are sitting pretty in sixth place in the Western Conference, four points above ninth place (currently a three-way tie) and super-close to the Northwest Division lead (instant third place, at worst).  Colorado's overall record of 26-18-4 is strong.  The team has been competitive against their divisional rivals and their conference rivals most of the season.  Not as good as they have been against the Eastern Conference, but still pretty good.   James Mirtle made a cool post yesterday about what it will take for each team in the league to reach that magical plateau of 95 points (or 90, if you're in the suck-ass East) and make the playoffs.  Why 95?  Because no team in the NHL, with the exception of Colorado last season, has ever missed th...
Cheetah Pets & Cheetah Predators
2008-01-22 09:07:00
The past week saw one of the most impressive and unexpected stops on the tour so far - the Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park in Namibia.Until then I hadn't caught so much of a glimpse of the world's fastest land animal, and as I said to a travel mate, I might as well pack up and go home if I couldn't see one here. The farm began in 1994, when the Nel family faced a huge problem with the big cats. In the course of one year, cheetahs took out 38 sheep and goats, plus an additional four calves on the family farm. But rather than shooting the cheetahs, as is both sanctioned and encouraged by the Namibian Nature Conservation, they opted instead to capture them - a decision they credit as having changed the course of their lives forever.A pregnant female was among the captured cats, and when three of the five cubs survived birth, the family adopted them as house pets and decided to turn their working ranch into a private reserve for the protection of cheetahs. Today, the fenced reserve spans...

Siberian jays can assess, communicate about the behaviour of predators
2008-01-10 10:16:00
A new research has revealed that Siberian jays can assess and communicate about the behaviour of predators.   Researchers at Uppsala University have discovered that with the help of various alarm calls the Siberian jaybirds inform other members of its group what their main predators, hawks, are doing.   The alarm calls are enough for these birds to evince situation-specific fleeing behaviours, which enhance their chances of survival.   Everyday, many animal species face the risk of being killed by a predator. Certain apes and marmots have developed specific alarm calls that communicate the category of predators or the distance of predators to other group members.   It has been proposed that an alarm call is an adaptation that helps them survive daily encounters with predators.   “But the risk a predator represents to its prey is also contingent on the behaviour of the predator, so it would be an advantage for survival to be able to communicate whet...

Game 31: Avalanche 2, Predators 1
2007-12-14 14:50:00
I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but Colorado got its defensive act together really quickly.  Despite the loss on Wednesday, the Avs' d-men shut down the Blue Jackets pretty thoroughly, and we're ultimately undone by poor goaltending.  Last night, they showed what they're capable of when the a reliable netminder is in place.  The Avalanche beat the Predators 2-1. Though they allowed considerably more shots against Nashville than they did against Columbus, most of the d-men were solid.  Scott Hannan saw more than 27 minutes of ice time and was overall very good.  Brett Clark, after some weak play a few games ago, has seen a reduced number of shifts, but he seems to have collected himself as well.  Even Jordan Leopold was back in action, and he showed little signs of rust, though he only played nine minutes, finishing +1.  Generally speaking, the blueline has become much more solid as of late. Speaking of solid, Peter Budaj shook off a thr...
