Box office blog: 'Year' of the prehistoric letdown
2009-06-21 23:27:00
First Will Ferrell's "Land of the Lost" gets destroyed by "The Hangover." Now, Jack Black and Michael Cera's "Year One" gets taken down by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in "The Proposal."Yes, June is officially the month of ineffective prehistoric comedies losing box office clout to similarly mediocre present-day comedies. This weekend "Year One" took in a just-OK $20.2 million to land at No. 4, while "The Proposal" topped the box office with a more-than-respectable $34.1 million. Meanwhile, "The Hangover" continued its impressive run, coming in at No. 2 with another $26.9 million in its third week of release. The only good news, as far as I'm concerned, is that "Up" remains strong, earning $21.3 million in its fourth week...

Archaeologists explore prehistoric heritage of the Sahara
2008-05-19 13:44:00
Madrid, May 19 (ANI): A team of archaeologists is making the first catalogue of the prehistoric heritage of the Western Sahara. The team, which comprises of Basque and Sahrawi archaeologists is exploring the region of Tiris, a vast desert area south of Western Sahara, to find more about the past of this inhospitable region. Led by Andoni Saenz de Buruaga, a professor at the Basque public university UPV, the team is visiting the Western Sahara for a fifth time. “We presented our research project to the Sahrawi Government in 2004. It was very well received and we have been given every chance. The results are very good, we have really made progress and that encourages us to travel for the fifth time to the region of Tiris”, said Saenz de Buruaga. The research of the Basque archaeologists covers an area of 30,000 km2, three times the surface of Navarre, a region in northern Spain. In five years’ work, the Basque archeologists have catalogued more than 300 archaeological sites, inc...

New Love Nest For Prehistoric Romeo And Juliet

A visit to an archaeological museum might be the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day next year. The National Archaeological Museum in Mantova will soon be the permanent love nest for the “Lovers of Valdaro”, a neolithic couple buried in love for more than 5,000 years. The prehistoric lovers, locked in the longest known hug, were discovered last year in a Mantova suburb of farmland and factories. Since then, they have been resting face to face, their arms and legs entwined in an eternal embrace, in a room at the archaeological laboratory in Como. “Analysis are still going on, but I can tell you that their gender has now been established. We are talking of a young couple, a man and a woman. By the end of the year, they will go on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Mantova,” Elena Menotti, the archaeolo...
Montealtosuchus Arrudacamposi, Prehistoric Crocodile Dog Discovered by Pale
2008-02-01 12:40:00
A prehistoric crocodile dog named Montealtosuchus Arrudacamposi was discovered by Paleontologists. Said to be the "missing link" between prehistoric and present-day crocodiles, this predator measured 1.5-1.7 metres and weighed about 40 kilograms and lived in the late Cretaceous Period in the region of Palo Alto, in Sao Paulo state, Brazil.Although it has no genetic link to mammals, the creature's stocky build and long snout are uncannily similar to the features of a large dog.Federal University of Rio de Janeiro paleontologist Felipe de Vasconcellos, who helped research the fossil found in 2004, said the reptile's physical characteristics placed it between prehistoric crocodiles and their current descendants. It lived on dry land and was quick on its feet, instead of living in marshlands and spending most of its time under water, he said."Its nostrils were at the front (of its snout). If it went in the water it had to keep its head erect making it an easy target for other predators...

Prehistoric giant salamander!
2008-01-23 14:44:00
Free London paper Metro recently published an article about the Zoological Society of London's Edge project – which seeks to protect 'evolutionary distinct and globally endangered' species. The print version of the story carried the following caption (you'll have to imagine the pictures here, I'm afraid):Freak show: Some of the creatures on the Edge list – the olm (top), a blind amphibian which hunts using electric pulses; the Chinese giant salamander, a pre-historic creature (left); Darwin's frog (below left); and the Gardiner's Seychelles frog, which is smaller than a fingernailDisregarding the hyphen, why refer to the giant salamander as prehistoric? The OED says 'prehistoric' is "of or relating to prehistory", 'prehistory' being "the period of time before written records". So this particular species predates writing – which has been with us for around 5,000 years. In evolutionary terms, that's not long at all.The OED does give a second definition of prehistoric...

Rare, Prehistoric Frilled Shark Photographed Alive
2007-12-21 06:55:00
A rare, prehistoric shark was caught on camera last January 21, 2007. Frilled sharks, named after it's frilled gills, generally remain thousands of feet beneath the water's surface. This serpentine specimen may look like a large eel, but its six slitlike gills help mark it as a cousin of the great white, the hammerhead, and other sharks. With a mouthful of three-pointed teeth, the frilled shark may be a fearsome hunter, but it's considered harmless to humans as it's main diet is deep sea squids and other sharks."We think it may have come to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters," a park official told the Reuters news service. But the truth may never be known, since the "living fossil" died hours after it was caught. Link
Ancient Ice-age Toolkit Gives Glimpse of Prehistoric Life
2007-12-19 14:20:00
Archaeologists have found a bag of tools that were prepared 14,000 years ago, before the end of the last ice age. The said toolkit, one of the most complete and well preserved of its kind, provides an intriguing glimpse of the daily life of a prehistoric hunter-gatherer. It contains the following: a sickle for harvesting wild plants, a cluster of flint spearheads, a flint core for making more spearheads, a cluster of gazelle toe bones, and part of a second bone tool."There was a sickle for harvesting wild wheat or barley, a cluster of flint spearheads, a flint core for making more spearheads, some smooth stones (maybe slingshots), a large stone (maybe for striking flint pieces off the flint core), a cluster of gazelle toe bones which were used to make beads, and part of a second bone tool," he said. Cut-Grind or Grind-Cut? The Butter Battle Book of Prehistoric Mammals [Zooi
2007-11-30 03:19:00
An artist’s rendering of what Pseudotribos robustus or a weasel-possum-lizard, might have looked like 165 million years ago In the November 1st, issue of Nature, a joint American and Chinese research team announced the discovery of a long dead prehistoric mammal with an interesting set of chompers. Although the teeth were very similar in form to other teeth found at the time, they actually were arranged in a “grind-cut” pattern instead of the more common “cut-grind” pattern! Upon realizing what they were looking at, some of the female researchers fainted from embarrassment. These days, mammals have very different types of teeth: from fruit eaters; to grain munchers; to ant slurpers; and countless others. However, it is believed that all of these teeth descended from a common archetypal tooth design. Paleodentologists (I made that up, but I bet Darren Naish over at Tetrapod Zoology has a certification in that) have long believed that tribosphenic teeth, ...

San Antonio's Mystery Bird - Gigantic & PreHistoric
2007-11-21 20:59:00
Expert trying to identify mysterious bird flying around S. TexasMore sightings of a huge flying creature, originally reported by KENS, have prompted an investigation to determine if it is a monster or myth. "Even though it was dark, the thing itself was black. The blackest I'd ever seen," said Frank Ramirez. Ramirez sketched a drawing of the large, bird-like creature. The image is disturbing, and similar to dozens of sightings across San Antonio and South Texas. An earlier KENS story about a large, prehistoric-like bird drew more than 100,000 hits on MySanAntonio.com. More than a few people in San Antonio came forward to say they'd seen the creature, too.One woman contacted KENS by e-mail, saying that because of our story, she now knows she's not crazy. _.._.._

Prehistoric Sea Monster-Protosphyraena ,8 foot long carnivore
2007-11-10 17:23:00
Protosphyraena ProfileProtosphyraena was a medium-size predatory fish of the Late Cretaceous seas with a long swordlike snout and bladelike teeth positioned to stab fleeing prey. What's more, one of these ancient fish had long, bony pectoral fins with leading edges serrated like saw blades. While the exact purpose of these sawlike fins is a matter of scientific debate, no doubt this fish was armed with lots of potentially offensive weaponry.Fully grown adult Protosphyraena averaged between six and nine feet (two and three meters) long, an unremarkable stature in oceans ruled by mosasaurs and plesiosaurs that grew more than 35 feet (11 meters) long.Complete skeletons of Protosphyraena are rare, which may suggests that either scavengers devoured them or the corpses drifted as they decayed and fell apart. Like some Late Cretaceous sea monsters, Protosphyraenamost likely went extinct 65 million years ago.Fast FactsType: PrehistoricDiet: CarnivoreSize: Length, 8 ft (2.4 m)Protection sta...
Prehistoric Maharashtra
2007-10-26 16:04:00
The Hunter-gatherers Some two or three hundred millennia ago, in the Lower Palaeolithic period, early man wandered through Maharashtra, as her did through other parts of the country. Small groups of people, organised into bands of 20 or 30, occupied the valleys of the Ghod, Bhima, Pravara, Godavari and Wainganga rivers. They led a nomadic existence, and subsisted on wild game, fruit and plants. They forged tools of stone, mostly of basaltic trap, which was abundant in the form of pebbles along the riverbanks. Their basic tool kit consisted of the handaxe, an all-purpose tool for cutting and digging, cleavers for scraping hides, and choppers. They may have used wooden sticks, sharpening the ends into points, for hunting. They hunted animals such as the wild elephant and the wild bull, fossil remains of which have been found at Nevasa (Ahmednagar District) and in large numbers at Dhanegaon on the Manjra, a tributary of the Godavari in Osmanabad district. The climate then was more arid ...

Rare Prehistoric Frilled Shark Captured in Japan
2007-09-21 13:12:00
If you have extreme fear for sharks, think again. You have actually not seen the most fearsome of all sharks! Brace yourself for the mighty and ghastly Frilled Shark.A frilled shark is no ordinary shark. It is prehistoric and has an exceptionally remarkable appearance. It is believe to take up the body shape of a dark brown or grey eel, except that the body has six-gill slits, which sharks would normally have. The reason behind the name of this unique creature is in the gill slits tissues that jut out from the slits. It has a massive body of two meters in length. It is an ancient creature and has probably thought to be extinct, but on 21 January 2007, the world was in for surprise when a frilled shark was discovered in the waters of Japan, specifically near the Awashima Marine Park, which is located in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo. It was a female frilled shark that was found by one of the staff working at the marine park. The 1.6 meter long shark was found to be ill, and afterwards w...

Rare "Prehistoric" Shark Photographed Alive

Flaring the gills that give the species its name, a frilled shark swims at Japan's Awashima Marine Park on Sunday, January 21, 2007. Sightings of living frilled sharks are rare, because the fish generally remain thousands of feet beneath the water's surface.Spotted by a fisher on January 21, this 5.3-foot (160-centimeter) shark was transferred to the marine park, where it was placed in a seawater pool."We think it may have come to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters," a park official told the Reuters news service. But the truth may never be known, since the "living fossil" died hours after it was caught.

Prehistoric Time: The Story of The Lithic Stage
2007-07-25 03:06:00
The Lithic stage was the earliest stage that began with the first arrival of Asian hunters in the New World. Probably Mongoloids, the earliest arrivals began crossing the Bering Strait over an ice-age land bridge, possibly more than 30,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence suggests four waves of migration, although linguistic studies of modern tribes suggest three. Archaeologists have been

Why did Romans, Celts, and even prehistoric settlers submerg
2006-12-19 06:44:01
Archaeologist Andrej Gaspari is haunted by pieces of the past. His hometown river, the Ljubljanica, has yielded thousands of them?Celtic coins, Roman luxuries, medieval swords?all from a shallow 12-mile (19 kilometers) stretch. Those who lived near and traveled along the stream that winds through Slovenia's capital of Ljubljana considered it sacred, Gaspari believes. That would explain why generations of Celts, Romans, and earlier inhabitants offered treasures?far too many to be accidental?to the river during rites of passage, in mourning, or as thanksgiving for battles won.
