Rednecks - christiansquoting.org.uk
2008-08-20 10:52:00 The term used to describe them (Ulster Scots) was rednecks, a Scots border term meaning Presbyterians. - Arthur Herman, How the Sots Invented the Modern World, 2001As a symbol of their covenant with God and each other, the Scottish Covenanters began wearing a red collar around their neck. Noting the symbolism, the English began to derisively refer to these religious dissenters as "Rednecks." Thus, the origin of the term was born in Christian reformation and resistance to religious and political coercion. Due to their religious and political oppression, and eventual defeat, many of Scotland's Covenanters fled their homeland and came to settle the American South. So it is that the South became the historic home for the Scottish "Rednecks," who sought to live according to the true teachings of the Bible. Australia: Presbyterian church split over cult?s fate
2008-05-10 18:53:00 Top-level tensions in the Presbyterian church over a cult inside its Camberwell church have deteriorated after the state authority defied a move that would end its attempts to excise the cult. Members of the Victorian assembly on Tuesday expressed outrage at a report from the national church group that in practice exonerates the cult, known as the Fellowship.

Presbyterians on Fundamentalism
2007-08-06 22:59:00 Some of you may have missed this. Rick Phillips and Carl Trueman commented on BJU-style fundamentalism on Reformation 21’s blog [Phillips’ initial post, clarification#1, clarification #2, Trueman’s post, Phillips’ response — all these are quite brief, BTW]. Sean Lucas, of Covenant Theological Seminary, followed up with some reflections of his own [post 1, ...

2007-07-17 14:34:00 Author: Eric Subject: Presbyterian Teens Converge Amid Youth FalloutPosted: Tue Jul 17, 2007 8:34 am (GMT -4) Presbyterian Teens Converge Amid Youth Fallout Audrey Barrick The Presbyterian Youth Triennium kicks off Tuesday with nearly 4,200 high school students and volunteers from throughout the United States and Canada. Thousands of young people have converged at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., for a weeklong conference under the theme "Hope is in our Midst." The conference for teens and college students is an effort of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the largest Presbyterian denomination in the nation; Cumberland Presbyterian Church; and Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, the first African American denomination to embrace Presbyterianism in the reformed tradition. The Presbyterian Youth Triennium comes as baptisms of young people are declining in the PC(USA). A 2006 church report showed that baptisms among children have gone down from 3...
Might Brown be a Presbyterian after all?
2007-07-12 11:26:00 This is what the Christian Institute has mailed."Whitehall sources are now saying that plans for super-casinos are "dead in the water". The new Government has had the opportunity to review the plans because the House of Lords voted down the super-casino regulations. We are delighted with this news. The House of Lords scuppered the super-casino regulations by only three votes. The Christian Institute specifically asked peers to vote down the Regulations. Many peers were contacted by the Institute and asked to attend the debate. In addition to blocking super-casinos we also hope that the Government reviews plans for the 'large' and 'small' casino licences which both allow for premises far larger than any existing casino.Gambling is morally wrong and profoundly damaging in its social effects. Some thought that there was little point in trying to get the House of Lords to block the casino regulations. The Lords' vote created a window of opportunity for the new Government to think agai...

A Presbyterian Exodus?
2007-02-27 16:15:02 By Mimi Rothschild This month’s issue of the Heartland Institute’s School Reform News included an interesting article by Grove City College professor Michael Coulter regarding Bruce Shortt’s crusade against the public school system. This particular piece takes note of an encouraging development in the movement. The Rev. Steven Warhurst, associate pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Kingsport, Tennessee, has taken up a similar cause in his own denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). With more than 1,200 churches and 300,000 members, the PCA is the largest of the seven conservative Presbyterian denominations. The two largest protestant church organizations now have factions pushing for a move away from government-run schools. At last year’s General Assembly, the Presbyterian equivalent to the Southern Baptist Convention, Warhurst and his supporters introduced the possibility of a church-wide push for homeschooling and Christian priva...
The Presbyterian Position is Already a Viable Centrist Position - Almost
2007-01-13 15:21:00 The upshot of the argument that I have been making over the past week is nearly identical to what the Presbyterian Church (USA) already teaches and promotes. The church says that homosexuals are welcome in all offices of the church, and should be protected in civil society. The church teaches that in God's plan for human beings the gift of sex is only properly expressed in marriage (of a man and a woman). Celibacy is a good though difficult discipline. We all have impulses to sex outside of marriage, including homosexual acts, but they are not part of God's plan for us. We should try to control them, and ask for help to do so. We should repent of our lapses. This applies to everyone, regardless of act or orientation. The one point not yet clarified is whether it is better to try to curb those impulses within a committed relationship, or whether that is already too much of a structure of temptation. The church has already accepted this kind of unmarried but committed relationship as a... |
