The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act PASSED
2009-10-23 01:34:00
Image by Steve Rhodes via Flickr I'm still not up to speed so I apologize for just passing this along and not sprucing things up a big......but The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act passed at the Federal level today! Let me say that again - at the FEDERAL level - which means it's the law of the land!  That means that it is now a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her actual, or perceived, sexual orientation or gender identity. Sadly we celebrated the 11th anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard with a March held in Lakeview - sadly I missed it because I was in Vegas. The Bill had...

China Retail As Piracy Prevention.
2009-08-14 18:11:00
One of the things I love about being a lawyer is what I learn from clients. I recently started working with a company that makes a high end consumer good. In the US, this company sells its products to high end retail outlets, including department stores. It has no retail outlets. This company has been doing more and more of its manufacturing in China and, like so many, it has recently decided the time has come for it to sell its product line in China as well. They have told me that "in order to maintain exclusivity and to prevent piracy," it will be setting up retail stores in China and selling its product only from those stores. That way it will be obvious both to them and to consumers that any of its product that is not in these stores is not the real deal. Now I am sure this is nothing new to many of you (so go ahead and call me out if you wish), but this is actually the first time I have heard of a company going into China retail to protect product integrity. What do...

2009-07-24 00:50:00
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is requesting the dissolution of a California-based AIDS prevention agency, accusing the agency of representing itself as a charity even though its registration as an Illinois charity was revoked in 1987. The Center for AIDS Prevention nonetheless launched an advertising campaign to solicit charitable donations, "including but not limited to on the websites of the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald," according to the complaint filed today in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Both the Center and its president, Morrell S. Neely, are named as defendants in the suit....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ji-adoldol/ / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 I agree that all violent crimes are crimes of hate. They are all abhorrent. They are all to be prevented. In addition, crimes motivated by bigotry, racism, and prejudice are so abhorrent that society should rally against them and declare the motivations crimes as well. This distinction illustrates how certain values are not acceptable in our communities. This distinction shows what kind of society we live in and what we aspire to be. Since 9/11, more Americans have been killed by right-wing extremists than by any other terrorist group in the world. Haters with intent to kill must be stopped on many different levels by any means necessary. This bill will expand the current federal hate crimes law to include any violence based on a victim’s real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. The Department of Justice will have the power to go after bias-motivated offenses and give important federal assis...

Asking the Right Questions When Implementing a Data Loss Prevention Policy
2008-12-10 01:00:00
Okay, raise your hand if you are scared of the word “policy.” Policy is sometimes an overused word that sounds simpler than the complex thing it actually is, and if not properly thought out, can be a headache to implement. RSA’s Information Classification and Policy Research team spends a lot of time focusing on the accuracy of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies. This week, we’re giving some hints for success and best practices that we’ve learned by working with both early adopters and some of the world’s largest companies. We know from experience that you can have the most accurate policy and it still may not be the right policy for your organization. Here’s how to figure it out...

Men are more 2 times more prone to toenail infection by the fungus rather than women. Furthermore, diabetics and elderly people are twenty five percent more prone to infection than others. During the 19th century there was very rare incidence of fungal toenails but in the recent times it has become increasingly prevalent. The incidence is attributed to common showers at gymnasia, use of hot water tubs, including the sauna facilities and common pool facilities. One more reason for the incidence is due to increasing number of people coming into sports wearing congestive shoes. There is cure for toenail fungus....

Antidepressants in suicide prevention
2008-08-29 18:03:00
Antidepressants are the cornerstone of treatment of depressive disorders in health care. Their efficacy in treating depression is undisputable, although it leaves room for improvement. However, recent reports also suggest that antidepressants might, in some rare cases, actually worsen suicidal tendencies instead of alleviating them. As a consequence, research has intensified to clarify this issue, and regulatory authorities in many countries have reconsidered their cost-benefit ratio. While there is no doubt that such potential side-effects of antidepressant therapy are a very serious issue, it is important to obtain a balanced view of all the clinical and epidemiological facts pertaining the effect of antidepressant therapy in relation to suicidal behaviour. Depression and risk of suicidal behaviour Suicide is a significant public health issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that annually about one million people worldwide complete suicide. Thus, worldwide signif...
Adventist Church's annual Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day

Today is the Annual Prevention Emphasis Day, and I found an article an Adventist News Network I wanted to share. The Adventist Church's annual Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day, held August 23 this year, is part of a wider effort to curtail abuse within and outside of the church by changing attitudes, says Heather-Dawn Small, Woman's Ministries director for the world Adventist Church. Excuses cannot be part of the church's message against abuse. So says Heather-Dawn Small, the no-nonsense Trinidadian who helps craft the world Seventh-day Adventist Church's formidable yet sensitive approach to abuse prevention.Since she began directing Women's Ministries for the world church in 2001, Small, 50, has fought reluctance by some within the church to admit the reality of abuse. She applauded the church when it voted to add an Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day to its calendar of special Sabbaths, now held the fourth Sabbath of every August. But with local pastors telling her that 70 to 80 perce...

Rapex: Rape Prevention Torture Device
2008-06-04 02:24:00
Rapex - dubbed the 'rape trap' - is a product worn internally by women. The hollow inside is lined with rows of razor-sharp hooks, which are designed to latch on to a rapist's penis during penetration. They can only be removed by a doctor. The product will be on the shelves of South African chemists and supermarkets later this month. South African mother-of-two Sonette Ehlers developed the original prototype in 2005 but has struggled to get it patented and approved for sale, not least because of staunch opposition from feminist groups."This is like going back to the days when women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape." says Lisa Vetten, of the Centre of Violence and Reconciliation in Johannesburg. Some also fear that the sudden infliction of pain on the rapist could incite him to even greater violence. via

Lifetime Medical Costs of Obesity Are Unlikely to Spur Obesity Prevention E
2008-05-30 12:31:00
Even with shorter life expectancies, the lifetime medical costs for obese individuals are greater than costs for non-obese individuals, but those costs are unlikely to spur obesity prevention efforts, according to a new study published by researchers at RTI International and Merck & Co. The study, published on-line in the journal Obesity, found that lifetime medical costs for moderately obese 20-year-olds range between $5,000 and $21,000 more than costs for normal weight individuals. For individuals with greater levels of obesity, the costs are higher, ranging from $15,000 to $29,000 more than for normal weight individuals. Obese White females had the highest lifetime medical costs for both groups. However, the authors note that these costs are unlikely to generate significant investments in obesity prevention efforts."Because individuals switch jobs every four to five years, employers are unlikely to reap the financial benefits of successful obesity interventions...
