Primitive People Have Primitive Languages and Other Nonsense
2008-08-21 09:32:00
When you work in a field, you find that the vast majority of folks outside the field have totally false and yet often culturally popular views about the major questions we deal with in the field. I have a Masters in Linguistics and in Linguistics, we have a few of those. One is that linguists all speak more than one, or often many, languages. Not necessarily. I only speak English well. We just study languages; we don't necessarily speak more than one of them, although most PhD linguists do speak more than one, and often several or more languages.Another is that primitive people speak primitive languages. It's true that they often have only a few words for numbers, and may only count up to two or so, but that's because in their societies, they didn't need to know any numbers more than two. They have other deficits, like only a few colors, but maybe they don't need to know many colors. Here is an interesting article (Amren link only because this Yahoo link will soon go dead) about ...

Back to be Primitive
2008-06-07 02:36:00
It has been two weeks Bandung has to turn off the electricity for some area. Today is my area's turn! Just off before 8am, and we're not prepared at all! No electricity means no ricecooker,no water pump, no computer, no tv, no washing machine and no mosquito trap for about 8 hours! Many business got trouble and rush to buy generator set including my hub's office. Cliff is singing happy bday to you, staring a candle, doing his 'MORNING CALL' in the toilet. Hahaha. Clay is reading under sunlight. Me? Blogging via handphone. Hehe. Today, I wanna buy an emergency light, enjoy weekend outdoor to minimize the water usage. We will have to have lunch somewhere far enough from our area. Last time we had lunch nearby, we can't wash our hands because they have no electricity to run a waterpump as well! See you later, save our planet, go green and wait for me till I am back ok? Best regards Hai, thank you for visiting this site... You can be updated everytime t...

How Primitive!
2008-04-24 05:42:00
Oooo excitement when I saw Illustration Friday’s word this week! I love primitive art, folk art, untrained artist art. Well, because I fall into that as a (mostly) self-taught artist. So I queued up Ryan Adam’s Heartbreak album (loveityLOVE it!) and imagined a simpler time. This piece is influenced by that music, naive American art, the Ozz Franca prints I have in my studio, and an old metal doll head.

Did these three paintings yesterday. (Trying to remind myself that these are not studies, but full bore paintings. Period. There is no difference.) The first, down in that same area along Hays where I seem to hang out lately. The second, just turned around and looked the other way, west down the road. Went back to the ...
Primitive Alien Life May Exist, Stephen Hawking Says
2008-04-23 11:48:00
Tariq MalikSenior EditorSPACE.comApril 23, YahooAlien life may well exist in a primitive form somewhere in our corner of the galaxy, famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking said Monday.Given the size of the universe, it is unlikely that Earth is the only planet to develop some sort of life, Hawking told an audience at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He added that humanity must embrace space exploration, if only to ensure its long-term survival."While there may be primitive life in our region of the galaxy, there don't seem to be any advanced intelligent beings," said Hawking during a lecture as part of a series commemorating NASA's 50th anniversary this year. The lack of success by the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project to discover signals from an alien civilization suggests that none exist within several 100 light-years of Earth, Hawking said, though he offered three theories on the dearth of interplanetary communications. The probability of prim...

Primitive Art Scandal in Orange County, California
2008-02-27 17:24:00
It was 1993. This author was enrolled in Art and Anthropology, an upper division general education course at California State University, Long Beach. One of the assignments was to visit an art museum, and lo-and-behold, right there on the approved museum list, was Bowers Museum. The facts that I grew up in Orange County just a few miles from it and knew all those years that it was a museum of California history made a return visit compelling. The Bowers did not disappoint and offered a deep collection of primitive art. It continues to offer visitors a fine selection of primitive art from North America and Oceania and stands out as the premier place in Orange County to enjoy such works. Normally when people think of Orange County and art, they think of Laguna Beach. Laguna remains an art colony and an excellent place to find interesting artworks, but when it comes to primitive art, locals find themselves best served by Bowers Museum. The museum s change in focus came about in the ear...

New Dinosaurs and a Primitive Bat Found!
2008-02-14 02:13:00
Oh, so lately there are new dinosaurs and other prehistoric life being unearthed and announced to the whole world. One is the discovery of a tiny pterosaur, Nemicolopterus. The other is a discovery of a hollow created hadrosaur, Valafrons, an Early Tertiary bat Onychonycteris finneyi, and now we have a discovery of 2 early carnosaurs, Kryptops palaios and Eocarcaria Dinops. These 2 carnosaurs, an Abelisaurid and a Carcarodontosaurid, live in Africa 110 million years ago at the same time as Suchomimus, a spinosaurid who search for fish along rivers and flood plains while Kryptops and Eocarcaria hunted and scavenged in search for big herbivorous prey to eat.

A Primitive Post
2007-11-16 05:16:00
The discussion in class on Mauss was more inspiring than the readings themselves. Though I was left with the feeling that this was because people abandoned what Mauss was saying and gave him more credit than he actually deserves, there were some inspirational points of discussion. One such point led to the following elucidation of my thoughts regarding PC language. The idea behind PC language, as far as I can see, is the recognition that the words we choose to formulate our thoughts and to conceptualize reality affect our consciousness, our attitudes and sensitivities and thus are in effect shaping reality themselves. This, it is important to specify, is different than what many people think their doing when using PC, which is to walk on tip-toes as to not to insult anyone. This is a great misconception of the purpose of PC. If someone says "Jew" but is thinking "Kyke", then there is no true gain in using PC language. If such a usage is prevalent, what will happen eventually is that t...
Primitive instincts

Why monsters like Hummers are allowed to run in metropolitan areas is highly questionable. Being such a provocative vehicle it is highly understandable that some people react strongly. Some aren't able to withhold their reptilian instincts when they encounter a hummer. Some react with rage and uncontrolled violence...Others react in a rather dissonant way compared to the prior. And finally the utter absurdity of driving a hummer in the cramped streets of Tokyo.
The Primitive Timing of Season Previews

The Present Primitive

It’s not just about racism though - it’s about culture and civilization. The word “tribe” invokes dark images and gross misunderstanding. With the advent of agriculture, tribes were slowly replaced with a new type of ...

Our Brains Respond More Primitively As A Threat Approaches: Findings May He
2007-08-28 19:13:00
Wellcome Trust scientists have identified for the first time how our brain's response changes the closer a threat gets. Using a "Pac Man"-like computer game where a volunteer is pursued by an artificial predator, the researchers showed that the fear response moves from the strategic areas of the brain towards more reactive responses as the artificial predator approaches. When faced with a threat, such as a large bear, humans, like other animals, alter their behaviour depending on whether the threat is close or distant. This is because different defence mechanisms are needed depending on whether, for example, the bear is fifty feet away, when being aware of its presence may be enough, or five feet away, when we might need to fight or run away.To investigate what happens in the brain in such a situation, researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL, London, created a game where subjects were chased through a maze by an artificial predator -- if caught, they would r...

Until now, the only evidence for paternal age effects has come from determining how many children with these diseases are born to fathers of various ages.To obtain the first genetic explanation for these effects, the scientists studied sperm from about 60 men of various ages and looked for two genetic changes responsible for 99 percent of the cases of Apert syndrome. They found that men over 50 were, on average, three ...

Clinging to Primitive Beliefs in Today’s World.
2007-02-26 13:47:00
We are living in a dying world, we as human beings are failing to protect and one of the greatest form of all destruction upon the world, is in the beliefs of our human kind that manifest in all of our destructive actions and our placid idle inaction. We gaze at the world, through our window of beliefs and through our paradigms, live our lives behaving in response to what we believe to be true or untrue. Divided billions argue their views in a frenzy of chaotic beliefs and no harmony or peace exists amongst the uncompromising humanity. The shallow paradigm of most human beings is a very stubborn vice of strongly held beliefs that are very unrealistic and unfair, in contrast to the Universal truth. They are what is condemning this world by resonating through human atrocity and what we as humanity desperately need is to free our hearts and minds from the devil’s influence plaguing the human paradigm with deceit. We need to open our hearts and minds to a new reality, existing in the ...
Paleontologists Discover Most Primitive Primate Skeleton
2007-01-29 01:13:01
The origins and earliest branches of primate evolution are clearer and more ancient by 10 million years than previous studies estimated, according to a study featured on the cover of the Jan. 23 print edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper by researchers at Yale, the University of Winnipeg, Stony Brook University, and led by University of Florida paleontologist Jonathan Bloch reconstructs the base of the primate family tree by comparing skeletal and fossil specimens representing more than 85 modern and extinct species. The team also discovered two 56-million-year-old fossils, including the most primitive primate skeleton ever described. In the two-part study, an extensive evaluation of skeletal structures provides evidence that plesiadapiforms, a group of archaic mammals once thought to be more closely related to flying lemurs, are the most primitive primates. The team analyzed 173 characteristics of modern primates, tree shrews, flying lemurs with p...
A towel on the Head - Sign of a primitive society
2007-01-03 19:24:02
Dear Readers Did you ever ask yourself why Arabs wear towels on their head? Did they ever hear of the hat? Why are the chinamen use sticks to eat instead of a fork? Why does a frenchmen drive a bike to the bakery in the morning instead of using a car? Why do Muslims in Sudan use stoning as a way of fulfilling a death sentence instead of the much more effective electrical chair? The answer is that all of the above cultures are utterly primitive and their development got stuck somewhere between the stone-age and the early nineteenth century. They reject the much more advanced western culture because they hate America. They are wiling to give up a lot of comfort just to prove a point. No, we don’t need a fork, we can eat rice with our hands or with tiny sticks. We don’t need a baseball cap or a hat, we just wrap some old towel around my head, this’ll do just fine! You gotta give them credit, they show much more determination than the average American! Look at this Ar...
Primitive Islam
2007-01-02 09:47:02
Islam, without the means (or the desire) to self-criticize and self-correct is destined to remain primitive and pre-modern. “…people suffused with the tenets and attitudes of Islam are not interested in Western parliamentary democracy. Nor are they interested in guarantees of the rights of minorities and especially of the individual, or in the Spirit of Liberty… …the connection between the social failures, the moral failures, the intellectual failures, of Muslim societies must be connected to the doctrines, the teachings, the attitudes, the atmospherics of Islam. The case for such a connection is overwhelming. It will not be easy to deny it, and at the very least, the world’s Infidels will see that connection, and so will the most advanced people born into Islam. It will put Islam permanently on the defensive among its own adherents, who will indeed begin to wonder why their countries have a series of despots succeeded by other despots, why their coun...
