Chicago's own "Gitmo" prison
2012-01-14 16:48:00 A while ago, there were some acts of terrorism going on, sabotage and finally a war. War means prisoners. Prisoners had to be housed somewhere. One of those places was Chicago. Not the Chicago of today, with wrought iron wrapping around every building, street and vacant lot. Not the Chicago of flowers choking in the... Read more »
South Korea Plans Trial Run of Robot Prison Guards
2011-11-25 20:20:00 From Engadget: This isn't the first time we've seen a prison turn to robots for a little assistance, but South Korea looks to be going a bit further than most with its latest robotic endeavor. Nevada Woman, Michelle Taylor Receives Life In Prison for Lewdness, Attorne
2011-09-21 22:53:00 I know laws are written for a reason, but for the life of me I can not understand how anyone can be sentenced to life in prison when found guilty of lewdness, especially since that same sentence is given to someone who has been found guilty of second degree murder. Michelle Taylor, 32, from Carson City, ...

HIV prison population could grow just by changing a question
2011-06-24 16:00:00 The Illinois Department of Corrections has offered inmates entering its prisons the chance to be screened for HIV for years now. Prisoners coming into the system are asked if they want to take the test, but faced with the choice many decline.Legislation that advanced through the General Assembly this spring would automatically sign inmates up for the test. They'd only get out of it if they made the effort to refuse it. House Bill 1748 authorizes the corrections department, or IDOC, to include HIV as part of the cohort of diseases inmates must specifically refuse, rather than specifically elect, to take. In other states, opt-out testing for HIV has seen success. Between May 2008 and June 2009, researchers in North...

Is A Good School Worth 20 Years in Prison?
2011-05-03 21:15:00 Let's say that you live within the attendance boundary of a less-than-desirable elementary school. You looked up your neighborhood school on the CPS locator site and checked out its Scorecard. Your neighborhood school is in Low Academic Standing for its performance rating and is also on probation. Hardly any of the 8th graders meet or exceed the state standards and there have been numerous incidents of violence recently. You tour the school and find out that the classes routinely have 35 - 40 kids. Being an informed, engaged parent who values education, you go through the Options for Knowledge circus to try to get your child into a better school. You're allowed to apply for up to 20 schools, so...
Joliet names Minor League Team after Local Prison System
2011-04-29 22:15:00 I've always said that Joliet is the armpit of the state of Illinois. (Like Flint in Michigan, Gary in Indiana, El Paso in Texas). There's not much going on there, but they do have a thriving prison industry, and now that prison-industrial complex has inspired the nickname for their new Frontier League team. The following is an excerpt from an Independent Baseball Insider column including Chicagoland news written by Bob Wirz on 2-15-09 on Independent Baseball. A debtors' prison for deadbeat pols?
2011-01-11 21:35:00 Maybe putting legislators in the clink is all that's left Too bad we don't have debtors' prisons anymore. They would be suitable lodgings for House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, and the rest who are responsible for Illinois' financial demise. We could let Madigan, Gov. Pat Quinn, Senate PresidentJohn Cullerton and others who are responsible for stiffing thousands of Illinois suppliers for billions and billions of dollars fester there until they come up with a sensible way to pay the bills. Sensible is not how I would describe the 75 percent (or any portion thereof) increase in personal income tax, the highest corporate income tax in the nation, and increased spending of the type that will please the public employee unions. It's as if...

Illinois gets a 'D' for prison prenatal care
2010-10-26 22:09:00 When you think of women in prison, here's a word that probably doesn't come to your mind: mom. But it should. About two-thirds of the 115,000 women in prison in the U.S. are mothers. That's a lot of missed good-night kisses and first days of school. And a new report shows that many states, including Illinois, get a failing grade when it comes to taking care of pregnant moms serving time....

NH Gov. Lynch Pushed for Prison Reform, Now Convicted, Repeat Sex Offender
2010-10-04 20:59:00 -By Warner Todd Huston A sex offender with multiple convictions and years added to his sentence for not meeting behavior requirements is having his jail time wiped out and is being released early due to a prison "reform" (SB 500) that New Hampshire Democrat Governor John Lynch championed as a cost cutting measure. Governor Lynch is running for re-election claiming that New Hampshire is safer. That would be news to the several teenaged girls that Michael Seibel molested over the last several years as he is let out years earlier than they expected. The story is reported by the Conway Daily Sun. The Daily Sun, though, is a by subscription only, so I'll have to cite redhampshire.com for a reference....
Less Prison Time for the Pretty
2010-09-21 01:32:00 Many of the strongest, smartest, most successful women I know take pride in how they look. I just smell better.

Blago Campaigning His Way Out of Prison?
2010-06-18 00:56:00 Blago got off the elevator this morning at the 28th floor and briskly walked over to the area roped off for spectators waiting to get into the trial. He proceeded to hug one senior citizen and shake hands with the other. He then ran off to a severely handicapped young man in a wheel chair to shake his hand. I don't think the young man really cared. The political campaigns are over Rod - you need 12 votes out of a jury box! For my trial, it was disgrace, humiliation and isolation. For Blago, it's about the show, the style and the delusion that this will somehow...go away!...

Day Three of the Standford Prison Project, er Census Training
2010-04-15 00:03:00 A power structure is starting to develop. It's subtle, but there. We as crew leaders are the guards. But I can't quite decide who the prisoners will be--the enumerators or the non-respondents (in English, that means the people who didn't send in their censuses). Maybe the correct answer is both.See, on day one of our training we were told that our assignment to be crew leaders (ie a lower-to-middle management supervisory role) was completely random. We started talking and realized that's not totally true-- we all have some sort of supervisory experience and we indicated that on our census test. The more time we spend together and the more we learn, we're all developing an inflated sense of importance. Like,...

Quinn's prison folly

Here's what the Crooks really Destroyed!
2009-08-23 19:05:00 Because of its destruction, the 647th Precinct had to be temporary put out of commission until it is restored. This is the home of Bulletproof?s Home Gym of Justice, a spacious apartment home located on the top floor of the 4 story rectangular, red-bricked, well-maintenance building once used by the Empire City Police Department as their main headquarters before relocating to the more familiar 647th Precinct building that?s about to experience a restoration like no other. The Home Gym of Justice is appropriately named because it serve as Bulletproof?s home turf made up of only 5 cream-colored rooms with either carpeted or wooden flooring depending upon what kind of room it is. The rooms are made up of the bathroom, the kitchen, the bedroom, the large living room which serves as a home gym, and the office den where Bulletproof works on solving crimes, managing his home and...
What are two decades in prison worth?
2009-08-21 20:37:00 Three-fifths of a man. Marvin Reeves and Ronald Kitchen were cheated twice by the justice system. They had to spend 21 years in prison; and they only received $192,000 for their time, pain, suffering, humiliation, and loss of income. The state of Illinois should be ashamed of itself. Marvin Reeves and Ronald Kitchen &-nbsp; Trib Photo:Abel Uribe Change the gender, color of skin, alter the socio-economics of family history, shift their place of birth, and these gentlemen would have received a minimum of $2.1 million. So why aren't they worth it? Yes, of course. $100,000 per year in prison is a drop in the bucket, but $192,000 for 21 years - that's an insult. They should get some placards that state,...
Prison: the new public housing? Thursday news round up
2009-08-13 16:00:00 Photo by Tim Pearce The Poverty in America blog at change.org riffs off of Barbara Ehrenreich's NYT op-ed. There's 2.3 million Americans living in public housing. There's 2.3 million Americans living behind bars. We know that many people who end up in prison come from rough neighborhoods. And there's no shortage of people who like to blame crime on public housing residents. So is it much of a leap to say prison is a form of public housing? Most of the young people I meet have a friend or relative in prison and many expect to spend at least a night or two there themselves. Maybe the real question is: who is better off?Public housing banning policy tears families apart -...

T.I. heads to prison
2009-05-27 03:48:00 T.I. entered an Arkansas federal prison Tuesday to begin a year and a day sentence on a weapon charge. The rapper made a concertlike entrance to the Forrest City low-security prison ? showing up late inside of a black conversion van with tinted windows. T.I. (real name: Clifford J. Harris Jr.) was to report at noon, but the deadline passed as guards outside blocked reporters and onlookers from coming near the facility on a rural state highway. It was not immediately clear if T.I.'s late arrival would affect his plea deal with prosecutors. Traci Billingsley, another prison spokeswoman, said the prison had no special protections prepared for the rapper.sourceSee you in 366 days T.I. !!! Personally, I think he is going to get out early. Prison Break "The Final Break" Review
2009-05-25 23:00:00 Maybe I should retract my words about how the show ended on FOX. Without giving away anything for those who haven't seen it all I will tell is little detail. Apparently following the dramatic finale, which jumped four years into the future, this special edition fills in the gaps, and tells us what happened to Michael, and Lincoln during those missing years. "The Final Break" continues from the season four series finale, and will be exclusively broadcast on Sky1 in the UK on Wednesday May 27, 2009. Again its always funny how OTHER COUNTRIES get to see our home grown shows first. Only good news is I'm glad there is an explanation to OUR USA finale. If this is a joke of the Spin off series featuring a women's prison knowing FOX they should just give up now before ruining what WAS a great show. Again at least there is more to the crappy ending. Good luck FOX on DVD sales knowing this airs in another country first. But than again the UK does have better shows, but get canceled just as...

Why Aren't Michelle Malkin or David Horowitz Going to Prison With These Ani
2009-05-24 08:11:00 "Ann Coulter has advocated Presidential assassination, poisoning a judge, and the killing of Times reporters.....The activists are trying to protect animals, while the right-wingers are defending the greedy, corrupt, and powerful - and being handsomely paid for it."By RJ Eskow9/12/06Simulposted with the Huffington PostToday, three animal rights activists were given prison sentences of four to six years each for maintaining a website that included the home addresses of animal experimenters and the executives that supervised them. A few months ago, wacky conservative conspiracy theorist David Horowitz endorsed and helped publicize a site that listed the home addresses of the New York Times employees and executives. He's still at large. The animal rights activists were convicted under a rarely used 1992 federal law, the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The law states that anybody who travels interstate "or uses or causes to be used the mail or any other facility ... for the purpose of...

Ask the Addict: PRISON BREAK, GOSSIP GIRL, HIMYM, FRINGE & More!
2009-05-11 16:08:00 While I’m not ready to see PRISON BREAK come to an end this Friday, I am ready to find out what goes down. Please tell me that my favorite band of [prison] breakers do not end up right back where they started (read: prison) — LincLover The TV Addict: If I were to tell you that your favorite band of [prison] breakers don’t end up right back where they started…. well, I’d be lying. Because the fact of the matter is, at least one of your favorite Fox River inmates does in fact return from whence he came. But before you start to put your very own Michael Scofield strategy in motion in an effort to break he-or-they-who-shall-not-be-nam-ed out of prison (again!), you should probably take solace in the fact that things could end up a lot worse. After-all, Friday’s finale does offer up its fair share of shocking deaths, which we’re fairly certain is a far worse fate than five-to-ten in Fox River, right? So excited to meet young Lily Rhodes on tonight&rs...
