Prius sales tank in May, Toyota blames battery supply
2008-06-05 05:36:00
This stat might seem confusing given the fact that fuel economy is king at dealerships right now, but Toyota just reported that Prius sales were down almost 40% in May compared to the same period in 2007. While overall 2008 sales of the hybrid postercar are up a little over 2%, this just doesn’t seem ...

Hyundai CEO calls out Toyota Prius technology
2008-05-30 23:34:00
Hyundai CEO calls out Toyota Prius technology Hyundai has made some tremendous improvements over the past few years, but the Korean automaker might be trying to climb the mountain a little too fast. Hyundai will soon launch its Lexus-targeting Genesis sedan, but it already has its sights set on dethroning another Toyota vehicle by 2010. According to Autocar, Hyundai is confident that its upcoming hybrid — set to launch in 2010 — will be superior to Toyota's bread-and-butter Prius. Hyundai CEO Dr. Kim Dong-Jin even went so far as to call the Prius ?quite old-tech? and claimed that Hyundai's offering will be ?more advanced than the Prius." Pretty strong words from a company that has yet to produce a hybrid, especially when one considers Toyota has been in the business since the 1990s. But Toyota isn't one to back down and Hyundai will have to deal with an all-new Prius — with an updated hybrid system — come 2010. Dong-Jin also revealed ...

Honda to build hybrid Fit, launch Prius competitor next year
2008-05-21 16:18:00
Honda to build hybrid Fit, launch Prius competitor next year In order to offer a lower-cost alternative to plug-in hybrids offered by the likes of Nissan, Chevy and Toyota, Honda announced it is planning to launch a hybrid version of its entry-level Fit hatchback. While there is no set launch date for the car, it will likely be built on the next-generation of the car, or sometime in 2015. During his mid-year address, CEO Takeo Fukui said the automaker is also working on a rival to the Toyota Prius. The Prius rival should arrive in 2009, and two other models are expected follow some time after, including a new Civic Hybrid and a sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z concept car. These four hybrid vehicles are expected to reach combined annual global sales of approximately 500,000 units. The price premium for the hybrid Fit as opposed to the gas-only version will have to be under an equivalent of about $2,000 in order for customers to consider it, said Fukui. The Prius-figh...

Trattasi ...

Toyota Prius eclispes 1 million worldwide sales
2008-05-15 18:04:00
Toyota Prius eclispes 1 million worldwide sales Toyota announced on Thursday that its Prius hybrid has reached a major milestone, eclipsing the 1 million mark in worldwide sales. The Prius was first launched in Toyota's home market of Japan in 1997, but was brought to other markets around the world — including the U.S. — in 2000. As of April of this year, Toyota has sold about 1,028,000 Prius hybrid vehicles. In 2003, the Prius received its first major redesign, which included a new five-door body style and Toyota's updated Hybrid System II. An all-new Prius will debut at next January's Detroit Auto Show, with sales following shortly thereafter. The Prius — which is the world's best-selling hybrid vehicle — is a major pillar in Toyota's plan to sell 1 million hybrids annually by sometime in the early 2010s. According to Reuters, Toyota sold 429,400 hybrid vehicles globally last year — up 37 percent from 2006.
High gas prices allow Toyota to slash Prius incentives
2008-05-15 15:51:00
With sales of many car and truck models cratering in recent months as gas prices continued to climb and the real estate market has continued its melt down, there has been one notable exception. Toyota has seen sales of the pioneering hybrid car climb by more than 67 percent in April compared to 2007. Toyota has been able to achieve this while slashing the incentives that they introduced after federal tax credits expired for the Prius. In 2007, Toyota spent $1,471 per vehicle in sales incentives, an amount which dropped to only $123 this year. Even Toyota hasn't been immune to the overall sales downturn, as sales have dropped 3.3 percent so far this year. Toyota is currently capacity constrained for Prius production although that situation should change in 2009 when extra capacity is expanded along with the introduction of the third-gen model.[Source: Detroit News]

Illinois brothers tune up a 100 mpge Prius
2008-05-09 22:26:00
Whether contemplating the possibility of a Lexus Prius or dreaming up a Prius convertible, people sure do like to tinker with Toyota's halo car. Of course, for many, the reason to mess with the hybrid is to squeeze more miles per gallon out of the car.According to CBS Chicago, two brothers from Du Page county, Illinois - Chris and Andrew Ewert - have modified a Prius to get 100 mpge (the "e" here being very undefined in the original source), simply by adding more batteries (battery type? also undefined) and a charger to the stock model. While techy details are not forthcoming about this particular PHEV conversion, at least one message comes through nicely: "My brother and I built this, and car companies should be able to do it, too," Chris said.If you'd like to see some technical information on how a Prius conversion looks like, check out what Kim Adelman is doing.[Source: CBS Chicago]
8-year old boy hit by Toyota Prius, raises debate over hybrid minimum sound
2008-05-09 00:44:00
8-year old boy hit by Toyota Prius, raises debate over hybrid minimum sound levels When legislation was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year to mandate a minimum sound level for hybrid and electric vehicles, we have to admit we thought it was a little on the silly side. But after the events of last weekend, it doesn't sound so far fetched. On Sunday, and eight-year old boy was hit while riding his bike by a Toyota Prius because he couldn't hear the vehicle approaching. Owen Erickson emerged from the accident with only minor bumps and bruises, but did end up on the hood of the Prius. Erickson was at fault for the accident — as he he rode his bike into the path of the vehicle — but his mother did put some of the blame on the hybrid as it was operating in silent EV mode. It is believed that this is one of the first accident in the U.S. that can be linked to a hybrid's silent operation and gives credence to the bill curren...

Newport Convertible Engineering have put together a bespoke Toyota Prius Convertible for an unnamed client. The prius is one of the best known hybrid cars on the market bringing in excellent fuel economy for a car of it's size. Perhaps the owner was looking for a guilt free open top cruiser without the wait for any of the electric offerings currently in the pipeline. The California firm have been producing convertible versions of fixed roof cars for over 25 yearsIt's interesting that none of the mass manufacturers have yet to realise that people may want a car that is both kind to the environment AND fun. Perhaps this convertible will give some inspiration.
Third-Generation Toyota Prius, Bigger, Faster, More Fuel Efficient
2008-05-03 18:16:00
Toyota plans to go full-bore with third-generation Prius, bigger, faster and more fuel efficient. When someone tosses around the word "hybrid", one vehicle typically first comes to mind: the Toyota Prius. The first generation model was introduced in ‘00 as a '01 model while the second generation model came out in '03 as an '04 model. The original Prius got Americans talking about hybrid vehicles, but it was the second generation model that really set things in motion for Toyota and its aim to equip the bulk of its lineup with hybrid technology. The second generation Prius -- classified as a mid-size sedan -- manages to achieve EPA ratings of 48 MPG/45 MPG city/highway thanks to its 1.5-liter gasoline engine and its hybrid-electric system.Toyota is looking to boost the appeal and size of the third generation Prius which is due to be unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The vehicle will catch the disease that seems to afflict every new vehicle redesign these days: further increas...

Next Toyota Prius to grow in every dimension
2008-04-29 01:19:00
Next Toyota Prius to grow in every dimension The Toyota Prius hybrid is highly successful in portraying the image of being environmentally concerned, whether it?s for Toyota or whoever's behind the wheel. The next-generation car is due to bow in Detroit in January, and word comes that it will grow in every dimension while becoming even more fuel efficient. The third-generation Prius will be powered by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine hooked up to an electric motor, according to Edmunds Auto Observer. The current powerplant includes a 1.5 liter engine and makes 110 combined horsepower. Sources have the next Prius will be 3 to 4 inches longer and about an inch wider, but not significantly heavier. At the same time, the powerplant will be re-engineered to be more efficient and deliver a longer electric-only range, while occupying less space under the hood. The bigger engine will raise power from 75 to an even 100, with combined horsepower estimated at 160. The increases in powe...
Argonne Lab tests EnerDel-equipped plug-in Prius
2008-04-24 23:56:00
EnerDel's lithium-titanate battery has been independently tested by the Center for Transportation Research of the Illinois-based Argonne National Laboratory. For the tests, a stock Toyota Prius had its nickel metal hydride battery pack replaced with a new 1kWh lithium ion unit from EnerDel. No problems were reported, despite the fact that no additional cooling modifications were made to the vehicle or battery pack. Additionally, a test was run which was intended to predict what the battery pack would be capable of if the Prius were converted to a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Test results were promising, with the EnerDel-equipped Prius achieving 77.41 miles per gallon on the city test. Although these results are just an approximation of what a PHEV Prius could offer, they are still promising. Also of note is the fact that internal resistance of the pack was reduced by sixty-seven percent over the stock Prius pack.According to the press release pasted after the break, Ener...
Cut Gasoline Cost Not Only the Toyota Prius
2008-04-21 18:52:00
With the price of oil and gasoline hitting record highs, it's time to wake up and face the crude truth on how you can save money on energy costs. As commodity traders push oil prices ever higher as the dollar recedes, there's little, if any, relief in sight at the fuel pump or from soaring utility bills.Yet the deer-in-the-headlights attitude that most investors, vehicle owners and homeowners adopt is misguided. There are quite a few actions you can take to beat the escalating cost of energy. The most-common response to high gasoline prices is to go out and purchase a high-mileage vehicle. This reaction certainly hasn't hurt the sales of companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which offer several fuel-stingy cars, trucks and vans.If you have a long commute or simply drive a lot, you'll immediately see the savings. There will be longer times between fill-ups. It may not make sense to pay a premium for these cars, though. The top two highest-mileage cars -- the Toy...
The Prius from hell is green, of course
2008-04-16 07:52:00
We have a neighbor who drives a pale green Prius. You know the color - it's a soothing, sandy tint, sort of the look you might find in an untainted desert in National Geographic specials. But what is most noteworthy about this vehicle is the fear it instills in people, not because it's some kind of politically correct muscle car, but because of its license plate: ECO BRAT.

Cool Toyota Prius Continuously Variable Transmission.
2008-04-10 03:36:00
Check out this cool demo for the Prius' main gear. http://eahart.com/prius/psd/ There is a simulation at the bottom of the page that let's you vary the input parameters and watch the gearing adjust. The PSD is a planetary gear set that removes the need for a traditional stepped gearbox and transmission components, and also the familiar rev-lurch-rev-lurch of acceleration in an ordinary gas powered car. It acts as a continuously variable transmission (CVT) but with a fixed gear ratio. Cool stuff.  They need to get their car designers to work on the car though because it is the ugliest thing on the road...well maybe that Pontiac Aztec thing was uglier, but it's close.

Chrysler chimes in on Press? comments about Prius development
2008-04-04 02:27:00
Chrysler chimes in on Press' comments about Prius development Jim Press found himself in some hot water with his former employer — Toyota — over some comments he made last month about the Toyota Prius' development being 100 percent funded by the Japanese government. Neither side has backed down, but Chrysler released a statement on Press' behalf on Thursday. While Press has not rescinded his comments, a press release on Chrysler's Firehouse media website has taken the edge off Press' statements. Chrysler's spin on Press' statement is that he was just emphasizing the need for the U.S. government to help the Big Three to "find technological improvements that help give U.S. companies a competitive advantage." The press release also said "Press was not speaking negatively of Toyota," but both Press and Chrysler maintain that the Japanese government did aid in the Prius' development. With neither side backing down, we&#...

Set a course at Warp 2: Prius-class shuttlecraft in NY!

Who needs an Aptera?I'm not even a Star Trek fan (one of my favorite jokes goes like this: "What do you call Star Trek fans? Trekkies. What do you call Star Wars fans? Cool."), but I am in love with this modified 2007 Prius. From the decorations on the sides and hood to the seat covers to the "If you can read this, our cloaking device must be broken again" bumper sticker, this thing just hits all the right buttons. The Federation-issue Prius is named the Zhang Heng (after a 1st century Chinese astronomer) and is the work of Dr. Willie Yee from New York. The good doctor has not only done up the decoration of the Enterprius to the hilt, but he's added functionality as well. On Dr. Yee's site (warning: Firefox crashes on my computer when I try to go there, but Safari seems to be able to handle it) we learn he's installed 2 omnidirectional 4-terawatt phasers somewhere on the car. Dr. Yee would like to remind us that phasers don't kill humans, Romulans do. And look at those moon cap...

Lexus Prius Spotted?

Club Lexus member duyl27 spotted a re-badged Prius out in the sunny state of California, complete with a lowered stance and dual-quad exhausts: It’s funny regardless, but with the rumours of an official re-badged Lexus Prius floating around, it definitely takes on a second meaning. All in all, and I say this with a hint of a smile, it doesn’t really look all that bad. Honestly though, I’m hoping for something a little more unique, in terms of styling.
BMW Diesel returned better fuel economy than a Prius
2008-03-21 07:37:00
If I were to tell you that a BMW with a diesel engine can "beat" a Prius in fuel economy, would you believe me? No, I didn't think so, cause I would not believe it either. Two writers for the Sunday Times in London, have decided to see if the official fuel economy numbers released by the manufacturers will actually match in a real time scenario. The cars they decided to put head to head, were the BMW 520d with a 2.0-liter diesel engine and the hybrid Toyota Prius.  Fair game?  Well, most of us wouldn't think so, but they still went ahead and scheduled a test to take place on a route from London to Geneva.  The results? The BMW 520d got 41.9 mpg while the full-hybrid Prius, 500 pounds lighter, got 40.1 mpg, of course, U.K gallons(we were too lazy to do the conversion). Here are some other interesting fragments from their report. Whilst the BMW "doesn't have the external look of a green car and you don't get the same self-righteous glow when ...
