You Saw Me Do What? Privacy In China.
2008-07-12 15:57:00 Two interesting articles just out on privacy in China. One, a Seoul Times article written by US trained attorney, Yuho Kim, entitled, "Data Security, Privacy in Asia," nicely compares the privacy laws of Korea, China, and Japan. The other, a Forbes article, entitled, "Who Will Be Watching You In Beijing?" discusses some of the ways China spies on foreigners and what can be done to minimize the repercussions of that. There are widely differing views regarding the extent of Chinese spying on foreigners, in large part because nobody really knows. I have always assumed this goes on to a certain extent in just about every country I visit (there are some countries where I KNOW this has gone on), including China, and I try to act accordingly. I have clients (from Russia, in particular), who will reveal nothing at all important over the phone and who when travelling internationally bring "second" laptops that have been scrubbed clean for the trip. For most people none of this is r...

Viacom and Judge Louis L. Stanton Rob YouTube Users of Privacy
2008-07-05 03:59:00 On Thursday July 3rd, U.S. District Court Judge Louis L. Stanton forced YouTube to give Viacom -- which owns shows like "The Daily Show", and "The Colbert Report" -- records that show what videos you and I have been watching. Here in this video , I explain that the implications are dangerous and could help, for example, the Chinese Government find and kill Tibetan protesters. In this, a private company could purchase the data from Viacom and then resell it to the Chinese Government. The Chinese Government could use the IP address information to find the general location of Tibetan protesters, go to their areas, and kill them. That's a possible scenario. I considered the court's "restriction" on use of the material by Viacom. But that's the problem: the block is on how the data is used -- there's no specific prohibition of the sale of the information. The reason for all of these actions, if you've not followed the story is that Viacom has sued YouTube for allegations of c...
Does Privacy Exist in the Workplace?
2008-06-26 00:00:00 The technologies of today have blurred the line between public and private. For many of us, a review of our emails, Web searches, and text-message inboxes could be used to paint a virtual portrait of our lives. Unfortunately, what many forget is that these logs are not gone when we delete them

2008-06-24 23:52:00 The personal life of every individual is based on secrecy, and perhaps it is partly for that reason that civilized man is so nervously anxious that personal privacy should be respected. Anton ChekhovIf you would be known and not know, vegetate in a village. If you would know and not be known, live in a city. Charles Caleb ColtonWe are rapidly entering the age of no privacy, where everyone is open to surveillance at all times; where there are no secrets from government. -William G. Greta GarboThings have come to a pretty pass when religion is allowed to invade the sphere of private life.- Viscount MelbourneThe poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the force of the Crown. Oh, Privacy
2008-06-06 15:33:00 At toddler group this week, I was asked by another mother if I would help her with a feature she writes for a magazine. She wanted to hear the birth stories of mothers in their 20s and I agreed to tell her my experiences in giving birth to Joshua. I didn't think much of it, especially as I'd been mentioned in a different magazine about Elliot's pregnancy. Besides the main description of Joshua's birth, I was asked to write about a funny moment that occurred... what I wished I'd known before labour had started... and to include a sentence about how my husband felt at any of the stages of labour or delivery. I was to include a photograph. Not too difficult. I told N about it, and he was appalled. He said he refused to have his name published and wouldn't agree to have his photo printed in a magazine. I knew N had issues about privacy before, but I didn't realise they were this strong. It's the reason I never post photos of N or even say his real name. Turns out that i...

Canadian Group Says Facebook Violates Privacy Laws
2008-06-03 04:21:00 You know, I would have to agree with them in principle. From what I have seen Facebook seems to take a dim view of anything/anyone that questions their “rule”. Privacy, schmivacy. From Computer World AU: A Canadian public policy group Friday filed a complaint charging Facebook with 22 separate violations of a Canadian personal information protection law. The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC), based at the University of Ottawa, asks the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to investigate what it describes as Facebook’s failure to inform members how their personal information is disclosed to third parties for advertising and other commercial activities. The complaint also alleges that Facebook has failed to obtain permission from members for disclosure of their personal information. Facebook did not respond to a request for comment. They didn’t comment? How out of character. In an unrelated story most of the University of Ottawa’s ...

Facebook: "a minefield of privacy invasion"
2008-06-02 15:40:00 The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) has filed a complaint against Facebook with Canada's Privacy Commissioner. The substance of the complaint is that Facebook collects sensitive information about users and employs it without their permission. There are legitimate security concerns with Facebook use, also with the site's lack of transparency. Privacy protection options aren't always spelled out clearly. Facebook's claim that "we pride ourselves on the industry leading controls we offer users over their private information," doesn't tell the whole story. The outcry over Beacon is perhaps one of the best examples of Facebook's controversial data mining practices.Facebook is partnered with sites such as Blockbuster, Fandango, Kongregate, Vox, NY Times, TypePad and others. Thanks to the miracle of javascript, these sites have been in a position to relay info to Facebook in the form of a "user alert." User's online purchases would show up on their news fe...

Users can digitally walk up and down the virtual street, which is built from composites of photographs taken by roaming Google cars with roof-mounted cameras.Peter Hustinx, the EU data protection supervisor, told reporters while presenting his annual data protection report on Thursday (15 May) that if Google launched such a feature in Europe, the company would first have to comply with European privacy legislation, which in many member states is stricter than in the United States."I would encourage Google to think about how to do this," Mr Hustinx said, AP reports.
