Same-day MRI scans boost radiology productivity
2011-11-19 17:01:00
Researchers at University Hospital Giessen and Marburg in Germany took productivity and quality improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma that have succeeded in manufacturing and other service industries, and applied them to radiology departments. The changes increased the percentage of patients who received MRI scans within 24 hours from 53% to more than 90%, and monthly patient throughput rose by 38%. As a result, revenue and savings increased by approximately 247,000 euros ($345,800 U.S.) in the first year of implementation (JACR, September 2011, Vol. 8:9, pp. 649-656). Lead study author Li Zhang, PhD, in the department of diagnostic radiology, worked with colleagues to collect data from the 1,200-bed academic hospital, which has two 1.5-tesla MRI scanners (Magnetom Sonata and Magnetom Espree, Siemens Healthcare). The facility operated its two MRI systems for 19 hours, Monday through Thursday, and for 12 hours on Friday. There were no on-call h...

Social Networking Sites Lowering Productivity, Says A New Survey
2011-10-12 14:15:00
Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, MySpace & many others have long been part of our lives. However a new survey conducted by Ponemon Institute has revealed a rather disturbing “fact”:  Low employee productivity and reduced information technology (IT) bandwidth are the biggest reasons for the rise in the use of social media at work. The “Survey” comprising of only IT & IT security practitioners across 12 countries including US, UK, France, Germany, India and Brazil “confirmed” in large majority of 90% that use of social media at work hits the productivity of employees, while 73% said it resulted in lowering the available IT bandwidth. The reasons supporting these allegations were lack of IT policies, especially for Social Networking Sites. About 39% of organizations surveyed, did not have a policy that informed employees clearly about the acceptable use of social media at workplace and in the ones that did, only 49% respondents said the policy was actually enforced. Thou...

Angry Birds For Web Browsers Out: Productivity Set To Drop Worldwide
2011-05-12 14:04:00
Angry Birds, the simple two dimensional game by Finnish Developers Rovio Mobile, is really going places. What started out as a wildly popular iPhone game went on to become the #1 Paid App for months on end. As its popularity grew, so did the platforms it was available on. It came out for Maemo 5 (Nokia N900), Android, Symbian S^3 and even Palm’s WebOS. After capturing the Mobile Market, it then came out on Intel’s AppUp Netbook Store. After that, it came out on Apple’s Mac AppStore. There are rumors of them launching a Facebook version soon, and there is even an Angry Birds board game. Yesterday on Day 2 of Google I/O 2011, Rovio  Mobile launched Angry Birds on the largest platform there is: The Worldwide Web. “We wanted to bring Angry Birds to the web for a long, long time, but we didn’t want to compromise performance. We aren’t making fish in a bowl — it’s all about Angry Birds. Really, really Angry Birds. We’ve been so an...

5 tools to improve your typing speed
2010-03-17 11:40:00
If you’ve been using computers for as long as me, you can probably type quite well without looking at the keyboard. Improving your typing speed and accuracy has become increasingly important in today’s world, where computers, smartphones and other keyboard-equipped devices are almost omnipresent. Typing faster means you can get your work done more quickly, answer your emails in a few minutes and update your blog by the end of the day, all in a much more efficient way. However, there are still people who use just two fingers to type. If you’re among them, don’t worry: you can count on software utilities, web apps and other tools to help you improve your speed and accuracy when typing. These are some of them: RapidTyping - Improve your typing by learning the right hand position and training specific groups of letters. The program then lets you use custom texts for advanced typing training, and keeps detailed statistics about your performance and improvement. T...

Social Networking Craze Affects Productivity @ India Inc
2009-12-23 11:29:00
Social networks are turning into time wasters for Indian employees as revealed by a latest survey from Assocham (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry). The report points out how the social media craze is reaching office desktops and in turn affecting the overall productivity of the companies. Note: The survey was conducted in 13 major cities – Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai with 4000 participants in the age bracket of 21 – 60. The Survey Points out some primers such as  : Indian employees are spending an hour on an average on social networks like Facebook, Orkut, etc. This figure points out just the surfing time on social networks, what about the time spent in getting back from the social world to the real world (getting back with managing work). Productivity suffered is close to 12.5% as employees surf their time away during office hours. Drupal's Proven Productivity Boost Explains it All
2009-10-28 18:36:00
Browsing the last day's set of blog posts to Drupal Planet is proof positive that Drupal enhances productivity so much that we have extra time for leisure posting. Of course, my own contribution is equally devoid of 'professional' merit or helpful support (need to finish an SEO book review), but these all contribute to the 'Drupal Rocks!' motif of the Drupal community. First, there is the Drupal Cube. Drive behind this Nissan Cube and the Drupalicon will be staring you right back in your windshield. Next, there is the Great Drupalkin hunt of 2009. Check out pingVision's pumpkin/Drupalicon hybrid. Lastly, there has been a rule change and some fun on IRC. Seriously, if we have time to post this stuff, Drupal must rock! Hope to see more. BTW, did you hear that the Whitehouse is using Drupal!!! read more

Busyness is Laziness: 17 Strategies to Kill Busy Work
2009-10-19 12:00:00
This is a guest post by David Turnbull. Being busy is considered the opposite of laziness. It’s not. Laziness is likened to sloth-like activity, performing tasks slowly and begrudgingly. Doing Too Much at Once
2009-06-21 15:30:00
I find myself sometimes doing way too much at once and never getting anything done. At work this seems like a boon and since I'm constantly getting tasked by other's to get things done on pretty crazy schedules I find it easy to switch gears from one task to work on another. But at home I see myself skipping around a lot with out schedules and getting very little done.I'll start to fold laundry, then remember I needed to take out the trash so I'll do that, then I'll rearange somethings that were cluttered and then realize I forgot to finish folding the laundry and go back to that, get bored and do something else, etc... It goes on like that a lot.Lately I keep feeling like I may have ADD (Atention Deficit Disorder) but I'm 32 so I'm not sure what can really be done at this stage in my life. I want to be a little more sane when it comes to getting things done instead of switching around all the time and not comleting a lot of tasks that should really have my full attention....

A Quick End to 2009's Productivity
2009-01-11 18:31:00
Well, for a few days there, I kept up a decent posting schedule. Alas it collapsed this past week as preparations for surgery got ramped up, work was nuts, and when I had free time I was exhausted. And had nothing to say.I had a procedure done in advance of the surgery this past Friday, which gave me a little preview of the joys of having someone mess about with your arteries, followed by me lying in a hospital bed for a while. It gave me an excuse to spend the weekend watching football, at least.Books:#2 -- "Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog" by Mark LeynerHad never heard of Leyner before snatching this off the Ski Bum's shelf. My first impression was that he was trying too hard to be wacky and random; that collapsed pretty quickly, though, and his absurdist short pieces had me laughing out loud consistently. It'll be a while before I can handle him again, I think, but this was pretty good.#3 -- "Sick Puppy" by Carl HiaasenOne of my fondest memories of college journalism days is a len...

Procrastination is the Cornerstone of Productivity
2008-09-18 17:17:00
This morning I could not tell if Lily was too sick to go to school or too well to stay home from school. She ended up going. In other news I am getting a bit burned out on all this work, work, work. Adding 4-5 hours of work to my schedule 7 days a week is starting to get on my nerves. My bosses are very nice though. They are appreciative of how hard I work, they have amazing work ethic. I get my first pay check tomorrow maybe that will perk me up.Yesterday, the Kindergarten at Lily's school had a picnic to celebrate the letter p. We brought foods that begin with the letter p for our picnic. Parents were invited. One of my new friends whose daughter is in Lily's class and they also live around the corner, her husband has been deployed to Iraq and came home yesterday in time for the picnic. I cried. I cry just talking about it. The kids didn't know he would be there. What a moment. The dad is a critical care nurse. I always find it amazing how strong some people are at ...

Second Extreme Productivity Seminar
2008-08-01 07:07:00
Ever since we launched the Office 2.0 Conference, summer months have been pretty busy for my wife and I. But this year is particularly interesting. Intalio is growing very fast now (the team doubled over the past six months, and is expected to double again over the next six months), the first Monolab|Workspace was setup in a record time, and the 2008 edition of the Office 2.0 Conference is generating a level of interest never seen before. Unfortunately, days only have 24 hours, and it does not look like it's going to change anytime soon. Only option: do more with less, and this is why we're continuously working to improve our personal productivity system, adding new tools, and streamlining workflows. If you want to learn more about them, I invite you to join us for the second Extreme Productivity Seminar. [Continue...]
