U.S. population to hit 1 billion in 2100, prof says
2008-04-29 16:36:00 It’s often difficult to get the attention of my students. But when I told them that it’s possible that a few of them would see the year 2100, and that most of their children surely would, they stopped furtively texting under their desks and began paying attention. When I was born just after World War II, I told them, the population of the United States was about 141 million; of the world, about 2.7 billion. Now, 62 years later, Americans tip the scale at about 303 million; the world’s population has grown to about 6.6 billion. A little extrapolation of U.S. Census data, I told them, shows the American population hitting 518 million at mid-century and 758 million in 2100. The world’s population is likely to grow to 14 billion at century’s end. Imagine what that world ? their world ? would be like, I challenged them. But I was too optimistic. In a report to be released today, a Virginia Tech professor estimates that between 2100 and 2120 the population of...

Eco-Atkins from Prof. David Jenkins
2008-04-21 21:17:00 There's a new version of the high meat protein Atkins diet called Eco-Atkins. This diet, unlike traditional Atkins provides it's protein through nuts, gluten (wheat protein), beans and soy products. Let's hope more people do this version vs the latter. The article says:What happened, according to his new study, is that after 28 weeks a group of overweight men and women following a vegan diet had lost 10 per cent of their starting weight. Skinnier waists weren't the only reward. Their insulin sensitivity had improved, lowering their risk of diabetes, and their cholesterol levels were healthier. This drop in both "bad" LDL cholesterol and kilos might give the Eco-Atkins diet an edge over its meaty counterparts. No one doubts that high (meat) protein diets can shift weight but some studies suggest they also increase LDL cholesterol - which raises questions about their effects on health in the long term... The amount of protein in Jenkins's diet was a ...

Prof. Ricky Lim's reply to the "Concerned Alumnus"
2008-04-15 06:20:00 The whole saga our MBA batch is going through seems to be almost drawing to a close as Prof. Ricky Lim tackles point by point the issues raised by a "Concerned Alumus." He emailed me his reply, along with the points he is answering:Concerned Alumnus: Prestigious accreditations carry a hefty price. Given the various accreditations that AIM has, it is obvious that a slight tuition increase would have been imposed. Since AIM has lost EQUIS (I hear their logo will not be on the new diplomas and transcripts), will the current students be given a refund? Will the incoming students be given a discount from their fees as well?RAL: The EQUIS and AACSB logos were never in the transcripts or diplomas--just the AIM seal. This goes for all diplomas since 1968, degree or certificate. And as for tution increases since accreditation--and in some years there were none--these were for other cost increases and revaluations of the peso, and not due to paying for accreditations. Engineering Prof Builds Brains for Robotic Cars
2008-04-13 11:06:00 Jonathan Sprinkle wants to build robotic vehicles that pass the Turing Test. The test, proposed by Alan Turing in a 1950 paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,†requires a robot’s behavior to be so lifelike that an observer can't tell if he’s dealing with a robot or a person. Sprinkle, an assistant professor at The University of Arizona, and professor J. Mikael Eklund, of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, have already passed the Turing Test with a control system they designed for a T-33 jet trainer. A veteran F-15 pilot who flew against the T-33 in a test at Edwards Air Force Base said it looked like a recent flight school graduate was at the controls. Following his success with flight-based systems, Sprinkle has placed his robotic control expertise firmly on the ground, where he’s applying it to smart cars that drive themselves. This research effort began with a DARPA Urban Challenge project Sprinkle worked on at the University of California, Berk...

I welcome all ongoing queries, but please bear with me if I am unable to answer right away. Salamat.Q: does the management still plan to reaquire the equis accreditation? "Leftist" English Prof Publishes Propaganda Excuses for Obama in the Nation
2008-04-06 21:42:00 When fascism comes to America,it will be called anti-fascism.attributed to Huey Long, governor of LouisianaThe Nation mag today is a rag publishing support for State Dept postions in the name of Leftism [whatever that means today]. At one time, back in the 1940s, it criticized the State Dept for its anti-Israel policy . Now it supports State Dept policy. This may be due to a series of ownership changes that the weekly underwent back in the 1970s. One purchaser was Hamilton Fish IV [or the III or the V?]. Young Fish's grandfather was Republican Senator Hamilton Fish who, to be honest, provided some help to the campaign to save Jews during the Holocaust, going so far as to criticize President Franklin Roosevelt [as I recall]. Where young Fish or his successor owners stood I don't know. As far back as 1979, the Nation supported Ayatollah Khomeini's takeover of Iran, which was also supported by Zbigniew Brzezinski, at that time, Jimmy Carter's national insecurity advisor. PSU Prof Yesalis and "Game of Shadows" authors Williams and Fainaru-Wada on
2008-03-26 13:29:00 Steroids expert and Penn State prof Charles Yesalis, and "Game of Shadows" authors Lance Williams & Mark Fainaru-Wada shared a stage in State College PA to discuss steroids and PEDs. Report here (Pittsburgh and Tribune-Review) here(PSU Collegian), and here (personal blog). In a startling statement Dr. Yesalis stated that 90-95% of NFL players used HGH (and PEDs). The title of a Penn State roundtable last week -- "Steroids and baseball: Where is the public interest?" -- spoke to a societal split on the subject. Authors Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, whose 2006 book "Game of Shadows" exposed baseball's steroids problem, and two Penn State professors spent two hours probing the issue. Rules of the legal, moral and ethical kind have been broken by steroid-users, yet two years after the book's publication, and with steroid-use revelations continuing in baseball and other sports, there are those who don't even consider using perfor...

Ryanair profit declines 27% outlook Airline warns that fiscal 2008 prof
2008-02-04 20:18:00 LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Ryanair Holdings Plc declined 12% on Monday as Europe's largest low-cost airline reported a 27% drop in adjusted third-quarter profit because of lower ticket prices, and warned that higher fuel prices and weaker consumer spending could cut next year's profit by as much as 50%. Third-quarter net income at the budget carrier slipped to 47.2 million euros from 47.7 million euros a year earlier. Excluding a one-time gain of 12 million euros from the disposal of aircraft, adjusted profit fell 27% to 35 million euros. Passenger traffic rose 16% to 12.4 million. Sales climbed 16% to 569 million euros as a 30% increase in ancillary revenue offset a 4% drop in yields, also known as ticket prices. Ancillary revenue includes revenue from food sold on the plane, luggage charges and commissions on auto rentals and hotels booked through Ryanair's (RYA)(RYAAY) Web site. The airline said it's on track to meet its ancillary sales target of 20% of revenue over t... |
