The Belgrade Manifesto - Profound or Indulgent?
2008-05-13 16:00:00
At the recent Belgrade film festival an attempt was made to draw a line in the sand for filmmakers; a line that attempted to declare ‘No More’ to shallow, puerile, pointless cinema and foster a focus on quality engagement with cinema as an artform for the human experience. The document entitled the Belgrade Manifesto (which can be read here) opens with the declaration:“There is a crisis in cinema today, a deep malaise, a feeling of artistic exhaustion, of pointlessness. The evolution of cinematic language that is so vital to the continued well-being and relevance of the medium has pretty much come to a standstill. Good films are getting fewer, the informed and knowledgeable audience that is so important for their success has shrunk. The older generation don't go to the cinema any more because so many films are for young people, and the young people today have little idea of cinema's capacity for depth, excitement and complexity. The critics, who should be guiding and educating that...

My kid brought home his school yearbook yesterday, telling me “Mom, this thing is EPIC, it’s 400 pages!” My reaction was “It’s a little early to be getting those, isn’t it?” David rolled his eyes and ever-so-helpfully pointed out “There are only four weeks left of school, you know.” A little later, he proudly announced he’ll ...

Humans Have Caused Profound Changes In Caribbean Coral Reefs
2008-01-11 05:46:00
Coral reefs in the Caribbean have suffered significant changes due to the proximal effects of a growing human population, reports a new study।"It is well acknowledged that coral reefs are declining worldwide but the driving forces remain hotly debated," said author Camilo Mora at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. "In the Caribbean alone, these losses are endangering a large number of species, from corals to sharks, and jeopardizing over 4 billion dollars in services worth from fisheries, tourism and coastal protection," he added."The continuing degradation of coral reefs may be soon beyond repair, if threats are not identified and rapidly controlled," Mora said. "This new study moves from the traditional localized study of threats to a region-wide scale, while simultaneously analyzing contrasting socioeconomic and environmental variables," he added. The study monitored coral reefs, including corals, fishes and macroalgae, in 322 sites across 13 countries throughout the Caribbe...

Profound Message from George Carlin
2007-10-27 08:53:00
What a difference a sad event in someone's life makes. GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...) Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate? A Message by George Carlin:The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,...

Profound Heartache
2007-09-30 23:27:00
This is a picture of me when I was just 4 or 5 years old, back when Joe Torre used to manage the orange and blue. That would be 1976 or so. Boy, how I loved going to the games back then and yell Joe Torre’s name, “Hey…Joe Toyeee” My family used to tease me because I couldn’t pronounce it properly. I was just a simple, innocent little Mets fan at that time, didn’t care about wins and losses, I just loved the game. I look at that picture now and think; how happy I look, if I only knew the agony that lay ahead. Nearly 30 years later, I have never felt as bad as I do right now as a Mets fan. Sure I’ve experienced heartbreak many times before; I was at Game 7 last year; and Game 4 of the ’88 NLCS. Those stung real bad. That’s just part of being a baseball fan; you go in to this thing knowing you’re going to be crushed at some point or another. Even Yankees fans have felt heartache. As a Mets fan, heartbreak is an inherent extension of our being. It’s just there...

Judge Profoundly Unimpressed with Retired Cop at Mob Trial

The judge who presided over Chicago's biggest mob trial in years expressed doubts today about setting bail for a retired police officer convicted in the case, saying his testimony was unbelievable. Defendant Anthony Doyle's testimony on the witness stand was so hard to believe it brought his sound judgment into question, U.S. District Judge James B. Zagel said. "What he was saying was profoundly

Something I Said/Sistah's BodiesDwight Hobbes, commentary columnistIt is now that a man?s fancy turns, paraphrasing the old quote, to what?s been on his mind all winter long: women. Except those scarves, long coats and such have been shed for the sake of more form-revealing attire. In other words, fewer clothes ? two words that strike delight and undying, neck-bending curiosity in men everywhere. The ladies, of course, know all this very, very well. And, accordingly, you can and will see them out there -- most each and every morning, noon and early evening ? jogging here and there, usually around the circumference your friendly neighborhood community park, doin? their best to shed some of, eh, nature?s bounty. Which is all well and good when you?re doing it for health reasons ? maybe Turkey Day and Christmas dinner were a little too good to you than y? should?ve let them be and you don?t want those extra ounces to slow down your blood circulation. Whatever. That?s not what the poin...

It may not be dripping in meaning or used to communicate anything profound but its is delightfully beautiful none the less....This short promo work of motion graphic compositing is the product of Version2 and was used as the opening of the Association of Independant Commercial Producers show. What is it? It's gloriously self indulgent being a work celbrating the work itself - an advert to promo the making of adverts. Ordinarilly I'd find this all pretty disdainful but despite the boundless shallowness of the application the work itself is mesmirising and divinely charming.

It Lives!? and then goes on to display profound ignorance

Design Paradigm, the weblog of the Cornell Creationist Awareness IDEA Club, has a post for the first time in months. Where do they start off? With the standard creationist fare, they start off with a question: We?ve heard over and over again from the Darwinist side of this debate that ID offers no novel predictions. Intelligent design actually offers many intriguing and novel predictions (you can head over to ResearchID.org to see some of them), but what about Darwinism? I would love it if some of our commentators or readers would offer what they think are predictions of Darwinism. The definiton of Darwinism that we?ll use is the following proposition: “The origin and diversity of life has occured solely by undirected processes such as natural selection.” How about the changes in selective pressures and gene frequencies in any of thousands and thousands of species that have been studied just since the advent of genetic sequencing, for starters? So the questions that ...
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is profound in patients with h
2006-12-18 05:22:01
Zee News? When fluid in tissues is displaced from the lower body into the upper body, the circumference of the neck grows, which may hinder the flow of air, Canadian Researchers Report. These findings may help explain why the prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is increased in patients with diseases characterized by `fluid overload,` like heart failure and kidney failure, for example.People with sleep apnea stop breathing temporarily and repeatedly while asleep causing them to gasp for breath. Although obesity and a thick neck are known risk factors for the disorder, they account for only about one third of variability in the apnea-hypopnea index -- a measure of the frequency of slow or stopped breathing episodes at night. Dr T Douglas Bradley, from the Toronto General Hospital, and his team theorized that fluid accumulation in soft tissues in the neck might cause narrowing or blockage of the pharynx -- the tube that connects the mouth and nasal passages with the esophagus....
Bangaku ?Subtle and Profound Dancing-
2006-12-02 16:16:09
There was Koyo Matsuri (autumn leaves festival) at Hottai waterfall. It was fortunate with the weather, and people enjoyed warm colors of mountains. At the festival, I watched Bangaku(??) for the first time. Bangaku is a sort of Kagura; song and dancing at shrines celebrating Shinto gods, which is performed in autumn in both Akita and Yamagata prefecture. It leaves the old way of Noh.Especially, Bangaku in my hometown is called ?Honkai Bangaku? including 13 groups. This has being inherited since Edo period. Bangaku is performed at Obon (the Festival of the Dead), Shrine festival, autumn festival etc to pray for good health and the well-being of one?s family. Here is one of famous Honakai Bangaku performed by a 9 years old boy. This is other performance of Bangaku with 2 men.

Judaism has three major types of food prohibitions. One is unhealthy food, such as suet. Another is swarming and creeping creatures. While some peoples with limited access to other forms of necessary protein eat them, the revulsion they cause universally across cultures suggests that the Judaic prohibition is not arbitrary. The prohibition of eating all but four animals is unrelated to filth; highly valued camels and horses are also prohibited. People are not filthy, but eating them is prohibited and filthy. Pig was originally a respectful animal, and for that very reason eating it was disgusting. Eventually, that disgust passed on the pig itself. Torah, unlike totemic religions, does not prohibit ?sacred? animals but establishes the criteria of hoofs and chewing, likely related to animals? intellect. The animals permitted for food are folklore examples of silliness: cows, sheep, goats, and gazelles. Similarly, the truly scaleless?prohibited?fish are sea mammals, smart compared to o...
