progress of sorts
2009-10-26 20:03:00 Mon 26: Shifting boxes to the garage on return from the newsagent yesterday, followed immediately by some branch pruning, was perhaps not so wise pre-breakfast. A pinched nerve in my left pelvis plagued me all day, making me walk like a really old OAP. Ditto most of today. Not that it stopped me from doing a ...
progress
2009-10-20 21:33:00 Tues 20: After Shriver?s article in the Guardian yesterday, I also spotted an interesting piece in the Daily Mail about Wills. Perhaps a touch of synchronicity given the current situation? On the plus side, communication is renewed and, with a fair wind, all should be done and dusted soon enough. Please God? I am paying lip ...
How Mobile Phones Contribute To Female Progress In Developing Nations
2009-10-08 16:41:00 [From Jezebel ] By Latoya Peterson For those in developing nations, a mobile phone is more than a communications luxury. These tiny handsets act as hubs for mobile banking, entrepreneurship, fact-checking, and public health announcements – and they may be the key to women’s economic equality. Currently, the market for cell phones is exploding as the technology ...

A POVRAy Modeler - Some Progress
2009-10-05 13:19:00 So I'm disappointed at the sorry state of modelers for POVRay on the Linux desktop. And thinking I can do something about it. I don't want to get any hopes up, so this is not a promise or guarantee that I'll complete a release-worthy program. But at least I am seeing if I have enough skill points on my character sheet to create a GPL-licensed POVRay SDL (Scene Description Language) parser, editor, and modeler in Python. My target language has a very C-like syntax. Not very flavorful, but robust and clear. I state again, that my program will NOT need to "understand" or execute POVRay. Instead of wire-frames, I'll be calling POVRay itself for the preview/editing camera views. So my problem is reduced to one of simple semantics. See a brace? That's a child of the previous item. See a hash? That's a directive. And so on. As long as it's digested into blobs that will show up in the tree doohicky and you could add another blob by clicking a button, I will declare victory. I coul...

Lisa Madigan promises progress on Pilgrim Baptist litigation
2009-08-26 20:30:00 Part Four of Four. Attorney General Lisa Madigan, my daugher Dawn Sherman and me, at the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago on Sunday, June 28, 2009. OK ... who's more beautiful, Lisa or Dawn? You're right: It's a tie. Photo by my wife, Celeste Sherman. Attorney General Lisa Madigan and her staff have promised me that progress should be made, soon, regarding my litigation to stop Rod Blagojevich's State grant of one million of your tax dollars to Pilgrim Baptist Church. The grant was promised by Rod to Pilgrim Baptist after incompetent, uninsured, non-union roofers screwed up and burned the church to the ground in January of 2006. The litigation has been on hold for about a year. It should have been settled, long ago....
Imagine Progress: Lockerbie and Crawford terrorists
2009-08-23 22:21:00 Comrade Chad here, spitting truth in your eye. Lot's of buzz from the hate-talkers (yeah! you, Nelson) about releasing the Libyan anti-imperialism activist, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi (some of you pigs use only part of his name- that's wrong! Also, learn to pronounce it! I've been taking lessons from the dudes at the Free Palestine! movement here on campus). I've been following the case on D...N!!! and the circumstances under which the Scots convicted Mr. Al Megrahi are suspicious: for example, we know that Mr. Al Megrahi was declared guilty on January 31, 2001. That's a full 11 days after Baby Satan's putsch. That would have given KKKarl Rove plenty of time to activate the Republican hate machine and pressure the Scots into doing the empire's bidding. Even if Mr. Al Megrahi did assist in taking down the corporate-owned plane, doesn't evolution suggest that civilized people should show compassion to murderers? Haven't the most successful societies always had light...

Think Progress: Misinformed like a fox
2009-08-20 07:01:00 My friends alerted me to this post from Think Progress (to which I always ask, "towards what?"). Ignoring the fact that most liberals when talking amongst themselves really want all of the things people are "misinformed" about ("give benefits to illegal aliens, support abortion, and ration care? Never!"), ahem: 72% of self-identified FOX News viewers believe the health-care plan will give coverage to illegal immigrants a. If Obama doesn't intend to insure illegal aliens, why doesn't he subtract the 10-15 million illegal aliens from the phony 46,000,000 uninsured number he throws around. b. Does the bill specifically exclude illegal immigrants? 79% of them say it will lead to a government takeover, a. Part of that 79% includes the CBO who said that millions will lose their private health insurance under Obamacare, a prospect that people like Barney Frank and Barack Obama must consider a dealbreaker [sarcasm]. b. Obama has said he wants single-payer, as well. 69% t...

Celgene (CELG): Cancer progress boosts biotech
2009-08-18 14:00:00 "Some sectors tend to do better than others in tough times; biotechnology often surprises investors in good times and bad," suggests Brandon Clay.In his Invest with an Edge advisory service, the growth stock advisor looks to Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ: CELG), a player in developing cancer treatments. Here's his review."This sometimes-perilous market niche can make or break a portfolio depending on several factors: drug pipeline, continued investment, market factors, and government approvals."Biotech stock performance is often hostage to government action – or inaction. If the FDA approves a particular compound, the company’s shares can jump wildly higher. Denial can make a stock crater. "However, despite the risks, there are times when we believe that individual biotech stocks make sense -- such as our latest recommendation for Celgene."The company recently reported earnings; blood cancer products pushed second quarter ...
Site Re-Design Progress: Main Index Beta
2009-07-29 22:13:00 http://penguinpetes.com/index.p-hp OK, here's my 'beta' preview for the main index. This is pretty consistent with the look I want for the whole site. I want the sections to float and the page to be liquid of course, so those boxes are going to do different things on different set-ups. In wide screens, they'll sit all in the top row. On narrower screens, they'll stack into columns. As far as I've checked in browsershots (almost always down these days, it seems), it's pretty bug-free except for sometimes how the div boxes position themselves, dropping down too far in (guess who?) IE on a narrow screen, but what the heck. That's what God gave us scrollwheels for, right? And it validates with a big ol' "Congratulations!" for XHTML 1.0 strict. So, everybody have a look at it, and I'll stand back and await the inevitable issues to be mentioned... If you have a comment on the page, please specify system/ browser/ screen resolution - that helps with troubleshooting.

Site Re-Design Progress: Color Scheme Done
2009-07-11 03:01:00 Quick, before my promises of a new look for the site become vapor-ware, let me get the new color palette up: What you're seeing is largely how the composite of pages on this site will look - #222222 background, white text, lots of the blues, a hint of the earthen tones. New graphics coming, too, which will also stick to this palette. I'm also not going to go as "box-happy" with the CSS divs. I've been so delayed on this because after we finished moving, I had to catch up on work. I'm at a point now where I can start paying attention to this project again. So, your thoughts?
Tips For Sustained Progress in Online Paid Surveys!
2009-07-06 15:32:00 Online paid surveys are part of internet based market research industry. For taking these surveys, manpower is required that is willing to spend time on completion of such job. In order to attract the freelancers, the online market research companies are paying good money to the survey takers. This money is proportional to the effort the service provider puts in doing the job properly. Many individual workers are moving in this direction to make money during their free time.Well, the paid surveys are evolving as the best income generating online business but there are both positive and negative reviews about this activity. Some people appreciate the 'work from home' opportunity that these surveys provide but some talk about the increasing number of paid surveys scams. The suspicion about the online surveys primarily relates to the bogus surveys sites that do not give performance as per the expectations of the survey taker. These sites provide long and low paying surveys, with a ve...

Progress
2009-06-06 00:48:00 Actually a lot has been happening with the novel lately but I have been much too busy with job and family to blog about it. My eldest, my son, is about to graduate high school and my youngest just started finished her first year of middle school.I've been networking with a group of writers in the Highlands and a lot of important decisions have been made about the novel. First, I am going to self-publish, I am going to edit down the first couple of chapters, and I am going to leave the forward you see here on this page pretty intact. If you're an aspiring writer and there's no writer's group in your area that you can join, I urge you to contact your local librarian and see if you can't start one up in the Library's meeting room. That's how I started my group and we are all very happy that I did.

Stink Progress Can’t Find the Democrat Whores
2009-04-09 14:01:00 Stink Progress can’t find the democrat whores.  Matt Corley, Stink Progress asks “Did Rick Warren compare Democrats to prostitutes?“   Well I don’t think so.  However Jane Hamsher, Fire Dog Lake, sure did: There’s a big problem right now with the traditional liberal interest groups sitting on the sidelines around major issues because they don’t want to buck the White House for fear of getting cut out of the dialogue, or having their funding slashed. Someone picks up a phone, calls a big donor, and the next thing you know…the money is gone. It’s already happened. Because that’s the way Rahm plays. Just in case you were worried, that’s not a problem for us. A whore takes the money, and does what he is told.   Apt description of the Hamsher describes the leftosphere. 2009-01-23 14:06:00 -By Scott Cleland The start of robust broadband deployment in the U.S. was delayed for several years in the late 1990’s because of regulatory uncertainty over whether broadband investment could earn a competitive return. Thursday Thirteen - Carousel of Progress
2009-01-08 02:44:00 One of Doug's favorite attractions at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in the Carousel of Progress. It chronicles the state of technology from the 1900's to "today". I, of course, take the opportunity to practice my low light photography. Here are thirteen photos and videos of the ride. The 1900's without electricity. They did have gas lamps and a kitchen pump. The ice box of the 1900's was just that, a box to hold a big block of ice and some food. My question is where exactly did they get blocks of ice in the summertime? Good thing I live in the 2000's and there are Yahoo! Answers. The collapsible ironing board was invented in 1892, but hadn't come to this family yet. This scene was behind a cloth screen which was lit for a few moments. In the 1920's, houses began to have electricity, but it was not very reliable. This kitchen was strewn with wires everywhere which kept shorting out.Jimmy and Grandpa listened to the radio.I barely captured Uncle Orville in the tub as ...

2009-01-07 15:44:00 After taking down the Christmas tree, I rearranged the living room to give us a fresh new start in that room. I pushed the piano over to the opposite corner, and angled it out. I moved the sectional couch to the corner where the piano had been, so the room was more open. I shifted the cat tree over and put the rocker into the time-out corner.I did not move the grandfather clock, for two reasons. First, it doesn't work. One of the weights fell off and I have to get it fixed and fixing the clock is way, way low on the list of priorities. Second, and more important, the clock is bolted to the wall to keep the Babies! from pulling it over onto themselves. Until we get them Civilized, that's a necessary step.I'm thinking, though, that I'm not going to fix the old grandfather clock, a clock the in-laws gave us and which has served pretty well, overall, but has never really seemed like it fit in, probably because we didn't pick it ourselves, and also because it's just... you k...
