Panama John McCain And Wife Cindy Caught Red-Handed In Property Tax Scandal
2008-06-29 06:34:00 Would-Be President And First Lady McCain Quickly Write A Check When Caught By The Authorities; $1,742.00 In Taxes Remain Unpaid And Overdue While I understand taxes, I despise taxes and hate paying them when I feel I’m not getting a bang for my buck. MANY of us feel that way. On the other hand, if I were to run for the presidency like Señor Panama John McCain has, I think I’d find a way to make damned certain they were paid in full. Either that, or I’d take the opposite approach and say something to the order of, “Damned RIGHT I didn’t pay those property taxes and I ain’t gonna. It’s highway robbery and I’m not gettin’ my bang for the buck. Folks, this is exactly what is wrong with America. ” But that’s not the way Cindy and Panama John McCain chose to deal with a lawfully issued tax bill for the McCains… at all. Instead of choosing to pay their tax bills or legally dispute them, the McCain’s cho...
Bob Barr on Private Property
2008-06-24 14:47:00 Bob Barr on Private PropertyJune 23, 2008 12:27 pm EST Atlanta, GA -- Three years ago today the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Kelo v. City of New London, undercutting the Constitution’s protection against the unlawful taking of private property. “In Kelo the Supreme Court held that government could take private property to give away to private developers so government could collect more tax revenue,” explains Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. “That allows governments across America to ignore the Fifth Amendment’s clear requirement that property be taken only for a ‘public use’,” Barr adds. Many states responded to Kelo by restricting the use of eminent domain to conform to the Constitution’s language rather than to the Court’s interpretation. But abuses still occur. Thus, “the president should direct all federal departments and agencies to avoid the seizure of private property except as a last resort,...

What is the real difference between ?owning? property, which the vast majority of people do anyway nowadays, and ?investing? in it? Don?t we automatically ?invest? when we buy property, given that property generally goes up in value? Yes, in a sense, but the main difference is that when you consciously invest in property,as with any other type of investment, you are buying with the express and overriding intention of making a profit. When you specifically invest in property, you are doing more than just ...

Turkish property prices 'could carry on rising'
2008-06-06 02:00:00 People thinking of buying property in Turkey could be making a good investment choice, it has been suggested. With the UK property market suffering a hangover from the credit crunch, some investors are looking overseas for opportunities to profit. Ian Jones of fund manager Cordea Savills believes one place worth investigating is Turkey, where a number of factors are combining to drive prices up, despite the economy starting to slow. "This is a country of some 70 million people with half of the population under 30 and with an average annual population growth of about one per cent," he told Reuters. Property prices have grown rapidly in some parts of Turkey in recent times and one newspaper recently reported that homes in the area surrounding the resort of Bodrum are prohibitively expensive for locals. However, the Turkish Daily News also pointed out that prices were still at a low enough level to attract interest from holiday home buyers and investors from overseas.
Expert confident about property in Brazil
2008-06-06 02:00:00 Investing in Brazilian property could be one of the most successful ways of negotiating the current economic uncertainty, it has been suggested. UK property, the stock market and even traditional safe havens like gold have suffered since the beginning of credit crunch and many investors are searching for more profitable alternatives. Their best strategy could be to buy land and property in emerging economies, according to Jonathan Garner of Morgan Stanley. He told Reuters he has been recommending to his clients that they consider investing in growing markets such as Brazil for a number of reasons. "The credit crunch has very limited relevance to many emerging markets. Not only are the banks in good shape, you've also got households that are not overextended," Mr Garner explained. Many overseas investors already appear to have spotted the potential offered by the South American country's economy, as figures published by the Central Bank showed that foreign direct inv...
Personal Items left in property
2008-06-05 19:50:00 Tenant's lease ended 4/30/08 but they still have furniture and personal items in the property. Tenants left town before lease end and I later found out that they had arrest warrants for drug posession/distribution. I had contact with one of the two a few weeks back and he said he would pick up his things. In the meantime he was arrested and put in jail and won't be sentenced for another month. Am I required to keep his things until he gets out and comes and gets them? If so, for how long? I have tenants moving in and am not confident that if I hire someone to remove the items I will see any of the money from him as he also owes $2,500 in back rent, fees, etc.I seem to recall people in jail having more "rights" then the rest of us.Any advice would be much appreciated.

O.C. property investor goes ’70s rock for charity
2008-06-05 03:30:00 Robert Brunswick was a huge fan of Crosby (pictured right), Stills & Nash in high school and later while studying at UC Berkeley, rocking out to their tunes and attending concerts. Now 48 and the head of a successful commercial real estate investment firm in Newport Beach, Brunswick is still a fan. So he’s more than a little excited that these 1970s rock gods will headline an upcoming charity bash sponsored by his firm, Buchanan Street Partners. “As a kid, Crosby, Stills and Nash was one of my favorite bands,” said Brunswick, Buchanan Street’s founder, president and CEO. “As the creator of this event, I get to have some influence over who we get.” The event will be the second annual Encore for Education Charity Concert, set for June 12 at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. With tickets selling for up to $250 apiece, proceeds will benefit VH1’s Save the Music Foundation and Buchanan Children’s Charities, with cash ultimately go...
Higher rents lift Europe’s property mkt
2008-06-05 02:40:00 Higher rents lift Europe’s property mkt - LONDON (LONDON) The clouds over European commercial property may be about to lift because falling prices have raised rental yields, while inflation pressures elsewhere are making the sector’s index-linked rents a tempting hedge. ‘Economic inflation and rental inflation are not the same.’ - Lehman Brothers analyst Mike Prew The vast majority of shops, warehouses and offices across the continent are let on rents that rise in line with inflation. Fund managers and analysts say a surge in rents could help revive interest from income-hunting insurers and pension funds, who covet higher-yielding properties because they can more easily match investment returns against their liabilities. ‘If we are in for a short sharp bout of inflation, rental indexation is one of the few ways investment managers can benefit,’ said Robert Gilchrist, chief executive of fund manager Rockspring LLP. ‘As l...
Cape Verde 'is a property hotspot'
2008-06-05 02:00:00 Cape Verde is becoming more and more popular with second home buyers from overseas, analysts have stated. According to property experts NuBricks.com, the west African nation has become an "overseas property hotspot" in recent years. The website said this is partially due to efforts to boost tourism in the country, as this has created a variety of investment opportunities in different areas. However, it said Cape Verde's regulatory system has also helped make it attractive to foreign buyers. Chintan Mahida, a spokesperson for NuBricks.com, observed: "In simple terms, the laws of Cape Verde do not differentiate between foreign investors and local businesses, offering a level of security and rights." He added that this level of protection is missing in many other developing nations across the world. According to the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, Cape Verde's economy grew by 6.6 per cent last year. Figures cited by MacauHub show that...

Singapore Developers turn landlords as property market stays quiet
2008-06-04 05:31:00 Singapore Developers turn landlords as property market stays quiet With projects held back, firms lease out units bought in collective sales By Joyce Teo, Property Correspondent STAYING ON: The consortium that bought Lincoln Lodge has allowed occupants to keep renting homes for six months from the sale completion date of July 8. — PHOTO: NEWMAN & GOH PROPERTY developers such as Koh Brothers and GuocoLand, which bought collective sale sites during boom times, are now becoming landlords as they wait out the market slowdown. They are leasing out apartments they bought to existing occupants as a way to generate some income instead of simply leaving them vacant. If the property upswing had continued, these developers might well have moved quickly to tear down the older homes to put up new developments. But the sharp slowdown in home sales has put paid to such thoughts for now. Market observers say renting is a nimble move given present market conditions. For sellers of u...

Commercial Property in Dubai takes off
2008-06-03 06:52:00 It seems very clear that the Real Estate developments in Dubai and specially the commercial office price are skyrocking. From 625 per sq foot starting in Year 2006, now have reached an average of 2,200 AED/sq ft.The demand from overseas and local corporations is growing which desire to own their office space instead of renting them. Commercial rents have dramatically increased to unprecedented levels in New York; London and Singapore. The cost per sq foot is high and should continue to grow. Many companies are planning to relocate to the Gulf and UAE as well as other Emirates then Dubai or even to another GCC country to reducing costs. By owning their own office, businesses will create an asset to their company and would be able to get leverage from their financial institution at a double win. When you ask where it will stop, investors would tell you to not be worried for the next 5 years until time of delivery of the property. Business Bay, the Manhattan of Dubai will have 180 de...

Cyprus property 'is a great investment'
2008-06-02 02:00:00 Two holiday home buyers from Scotland have outlined the advantages of owning a property in Cyprus. According to Ian and Cathy Rutherford, purchasing a house on the Mediterranean island has proved to be a "great investment". Speaking to the Sunday Mail, they said this is because they have been able to rent it out during those times that it would otherwise be empty. Furthermore, they stated that continuing increases in house prices in Cyprus means that the value of their new home is going up. . Mrs Rutherford commented: "A similar apartment sold recently for about £20,000 more than we bought ours for, so it's a great investment too." She added that as soon as they retire, they plan to spend far more time living in their Cypriot property. This comes after the Independent said that Cyprus does not seem to have been negatively affected by the worldwide financial crisis. According to the newspaper, this development represents a "convincing case"...

The great mortgage payoff
2008-06-01 07:59:00 The June direct debit has left the bank account, however as we are in the middle of swapping mortgages, I have no idea where we are with the balance this month. It's got a little confusing as we've borrowed more than the balance outstanding. This is because we applied 3 months ago, so the figures were done on the balance then. It doesn't matter, as when the dust settles we'll just pay the extra off the new mortgage as it has unlimited over payments.I've placed the 600 overpayment money in the e-saver for now, so it's ready to go as and when.On a side note part of the bathroom window frame broke yesterday, which means we need a new one. This whole window has needed replacing ever since we moved in and I'm surprised its lasted for two years. The list of home improvements still needed gets bigger and bigger! So far I have:Hall tiles cleaned/restoredChimneys re stacked x 2 Insulation in the roofRemove conifer tress x 2Repair/replace all windows, some have wet rot!Gravel outside ...
