Staging and Grading of Prostate Cancer
2009-04-29 09:36:00
by: Fritz FreiStaging and GradingOnce the diagnosis of prostate cancer has been made the disease has to be staged and graded. The stage refers to the extent and spread of the disease while the grade refers to the nature (aggressiveness) of the particular tumor. Staging will determine the extent of disease and provide important prognostic information that will influence the management decisions.Staging investigations - PSA - X-rays of lumbar spine and pelvis - Chest X-ray - Radionuclitide bone scan - MTI scan of pelvisTNM Staging system T stage (extent of primary lesion)- T1 - tumor confined to prostate, not palpable or visible on TRUS - T2 - tumor palpable or visible on TRUS but confined to prostate - T3 - spread beyond the prostatic capsule - T3a - extracapsular spread only - T3b - involvement of the seminal vesicles - T4 - invasion into rectal wall, bladder neck or pelvic wall N (Nodal) status - N0 - regional nodes not involved - N1 - regional nodes involved by tumor M (Distant Me...

Prostate Cancer : The Man Killer
2008-09-10 21:30:00
Author: Paul RodgersProstate health is one of the most important aspects of a man's health. Prostate health is something that should be treated with a balanced diet your whole life. Prostate cancer is VERY serious and will kill you if not diagnosed early and treated. Prostate cancer is a condition where prostate cells grow exponentially and out of control. It is the most common cancer associated with men, and can lead to many complications, one rather large one being that you die.Since prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men, every man should consider trying to improve the health of this vital gland naturally through diet and supplements. The idea of eating for a healthy heart is now medically accepted but the concept of eating for a healthy prostate is revolutionary.Afflictions of the prostate are most commonly found in developed countries whose dietary habits focus on red meat and dairy products. Eastern males eat many more yellow, orange, red and g...
Prostate Cancer
2008-09-04 19:44:00
by: Kelly MooreCancer can occur in any part of the body - lungs, intestine, rectum, breast or prostate. Prostate cancer develops as a malignant tumor that starts in the prostate gland. There is a possibility of the cancer spreading from the prostate to the lymph nodes, other organs or bones through metastasis. This is the second most common type of cancer in men, which can lead to death. However, with the improvement of medicine, survival rates in patients have improved considerably. The cause of prostate cancer has never been found out, however, there are some risk factors that induce prostate cancer. It has been found out that with the increase of age, the risk of prostate cancer tends to increase. Having family members with prostate cancer increases the risk of developing prostate cancer. Statistics show that African-American men have a higher risk of prostate cancer than Caucasian men. And of course, obese men are more prone to prostate cancer. There are no specific symptoms for pr...
Lycopene Effective with Prostate Cancer Treatment
2008-09-04 19:41:00
by: Darin IngelsMen with prostate cancer who take supplemental lycopene in addition to surgical removal of the testicles may experience less active disease, less bone pain, and live longer than those who only have surgical removal of the testicles, according to a new study in British Journal of Urology International (2003;92:375?8). This is exciting news for millions of men who have to undergo aggressive treatment for advanced prostate cancer.Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men over the age of 50 years, with more than 200,000 new cases each year in the United States. The cause of prostate cancer, like many other cancers, is unknown; however, some studies suggest alterations in testosterone metabolism may play a role in its development. Prostate cancer is generally slow growing and may not cause any symptoms until late in the disease. Symptoms may include frequent or painful urination, dribbling after urination, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, or b...
Prostate Cancer: Who's At Risk?
2008-08-30 21:58:00
Author: Richard H EalomIntroductionProstate cancer is cancer of the small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces seminal fluid, the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. It is also the second most common type of cancer among men in this country and is the third most common cause of death from cancer in men of all ages. Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men and is rarely found in men younger than 40. It occurs in 1 out of 6 men and when confined to the gland often is treated successfully.RiskAll men are at risk for developing prostate cancer. Besides being male, there are other factors, such as age, race, and family history that may contribute to the risk. Men at higher risk include African-America men older than 60,farmers, tire plant workers, painters, and men exposed to cadmium. The risk for developing it rises significantly with age, and 60% of newly diagnosed cases occur in men over the age of 70. The greatest risk factor is age. This risk increases significantly aft...
Estrogen Plays A Key Role In An Aggressive Form Of Prostate Cancer
2008-06-05 06:40:00
Using a breakthrough technology, researchers led by a Weill Cornell Medical College scientist have pinpointed the hormone estrogen as a key player in about half of all prostate cancers. Estrogen-linked signaling helps drive a discrete and aggressive form of the disease caused by a chromosomal translocation, which in turn results in the fusion of two genes. “Fifty ...

Prostate Cancer Symptoms
2008-05-14 13:22:00
Many men do not seek medical advice when the symptoms are present, partly because they are very similar to those of another disease: BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy. Prostate cancer can also be present for years without causing any symptoms and is often not detected until it is in an advanced stage. In this article about prostate cancer symptoms, prostate treatment, radiation and more, we aim to introduce you to prostate cancer so that you have an outline of important information if you ever find yourself, or someone you love facing a similar situation. The existing symptoms of prostate problems may or may not signal cancer including necessity to urinate very often, painful and burning urination, bloody urine, lower back pain or pain in the pelvis or upper thighs, dribbling after urination, blood in semen, weak urine flow, difficulty in starting urination, painful or burning urination, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, stopping and starting urination along with not...

The scene above is from Seinfeld. The episode is called "The Contest." The phrases "master of my domain" and "king of the castle" are in this episode. Check it out above to see the beginning of the episode. What does this have to do with preventing prostate cancer? Well, I'll let the story below explain itself:Men who frequently masturbate appear to have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, Australian researchers reported. Researchers from the Cancer Council of Victoria found that men who masturbated more than five times each week were one-third less likely to develop the cancer.Researchers told the BBC last week that the prostate produces one of the fluids involved in ejaculation and that frequent masturbation appears to flush out carcinogens. Sexual intercourse may not have the same effect because it increases the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, which could raise the risk of cancer.Uh, yeah. Can you see me giving this advice to my patients? However, I ...

Side Effects Of Radiation Treatment For Prostate Cancer
2008-04-02 15:00:00
Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer: ForewarningRadiation therapy, because of its numerous side effects, is seen as the last resort treatment for prostate cancer. That is why the people usually opting for radiation therapy are also those patients who have already gone through and tried all other options, and thus making a relatively safe procedure of radiation therapy having the highest mortality rate. For all its worth, radiation therapy is the least enveloping cancer treatment. That alone speaks of the least complications. The Side Effects of Radiation Therapy on Prostate Cancer are expected. Except the risk of another cancer, it is the same with all other the treatment for prostate cancer: infertility, impotence, bowel and/ or urinary incontinence. Another danger is the damage of the epithelial surface of the skin where the radiation had hit. There is also the collateral radiation damage, this damage of the surrounding tissues where it may hit some vital organs less resilient t...

Psa Bounce After Radiation Therapy For Prostate Cancer: Keeping An Eye On T
2008-03-22 15:47:00
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. It is measured in the blood stream and is a useful tool for following men who have been treated for prostate cancer. Does a PSA elevation after radiation treatment, be it a prostate seed implant and/or external beam radiation therapy, always signify disease recurrence? In the past, a PSA elevation after a prostate seed implant or external beam radiation therapy was considered to be a harbinger of a prostate cancer relapse, often prompting expensive tests and invoking a great deal of patient anxiety. Then, when the PSA level climbed to10 ng/ml or greater, men were placed on hormonal therapy. Since the latter is associated with a number of unpleasant side effects, it is desirable to refrain from using hormonal therapy unless necessary. The question then arises: when does an increase in the PSA level not signify that cancer has returned? There is a phenomenon known as a PSA bounce, in which the PSA level jumps ...

Author: Robert KirkProstate cancer is a condition which afflicts men. The cancer develops and spreads within the prostate gland. This gland is located around the neck of the bladder, and is responsible for the production and release of seminal fluid, the thick gel which carries the sperm to the uterus of the female. As is the case with most types of cancers, prostate cancer is easier to treat during the early stages; in advanced stages the chances for adverse effects due to surgery or other drastic treatments may be more detrimental to the health of the patient than the illness itself. One out of six men is expected to be diagnosed with the disease within his lifetime, with a mortality rate of one out of thirty-four. This is a condition which usually afflicts middle-aged males; those who are below 40 years of age are rarely diagnosed with prostate cancer. The factors which contribute to the possibility of acquiring the disease include age, race, family history, diet and nutrition, an...

The Connection Between Gleason Scores and Prostate Cancer
2008-03-15 14:18:00
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer, with an estimated 218,890 discovered cases in the United States during 2007 alone. If you or someone you know is diagnosed, understanding the relationship between Gleason scores and prostate cancer can help you comprehend the prognosis and decide on the best treatment options.A Gleason score is the near-standard rating that pathologists use to grade the severity of prostate cancer. After taking a biopsy or a small piece of the cancerous prostate, a Gleason grade, ranging from from 1 to 5, is assigned to a patient's cancer after examining how closely cells contained in the cancerous tissue resemble normal prostate tissue cells.Cancerous cells that closely resemble normal prostate tissue receive a Gleason score of 1. If the cancer cells differ significantly from normal cells -- that is, they seem to appear randomly throughout the prostate -- they will be given a grade 5 in the Gleason sys...

Androgen Deprivation Therapy For Prostate Cancer Treatment
2008-02-28 18:30:00
During the old days, practice of Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment is what scares many men. Losing a part of your genitalia, for a man to lose ones faculty for sex is too much for a cure that's percentage driven. The former practice, this Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment is Orchiectomy or the surgical castration -a term that hardly requires definition. The science for this is that testosterone stimulates prostate cancer growth. Testosterone is the male androgen hormone essential for a boy's development to manhood. It is responsible for many things characteristically man: baritone voice, deepening of chests, bulging of muscles, and growth of body hair among several things. And an enzyme that is secreted in the prostate gland converts this testosterone into a metabolite Dihydrotestosterone (abbreviated as DHT) which is a cancer stimulating cell. And because the testicles produce the majority of the testosterone, the Androgen Depriva...

Many Prostate Cancers Will Not Need Treatment
2008-02-18 18:37:00
One of the largest studies of its kind concludes that most older men with early prostate cancer do not shorten their survival odds if they adopt a "wait-and-see" approach to the disease. In fact, most such patients will die of other causes or they simply won't develop any complications from the cancer, the researchers found."Many elderly men with lower risk cancer may do well with conservative management," concluded study author Grace Lu-Yau, a cancer epidemiologist at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and an associate professor at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and School of Public Health."Each patient facing a treatment decision has to ask himself what is the potential survival benefit of various treatments and the potential side effects of various treatments, then compare this potential risk of side effects with the potential risk of cancer complications if the cancer is left untreated - and ask themselves which treatment option is their personal preference," Lu-Yau s...

Simple urine test beats PSA in detecting prostate cancer
2008-02-02 11:58:00
An experimental, non-invasive biomarker test has shown promise to accurately detect prostate cancer, more than any other screening method currently in use, say researchers.   Developed at the University of Michigan, the screening method is a simple urine test that detects the presence of four different RNA molecules.   During a study, this method accurately identified 80 percent of patients who were later found to have prostate cancer. Furthermore, it was 61 percent effective in ruling out disease in other study participants, say the researchers.   According to the researchers, this test is even more accurate than the newer PCA3 test, which screens for a molecule specific to prostate cancer.   "Relative to what is out there, this is the best test so far," said the study's lead author, Arul Chinnaiyan, director of the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology at the University of Michigan.   He says that the "first generation multiplex&qu...

Study finds links between prostate cancer, cadmium and zinc
2008-02-01 12:51:00
Cadmium exposure is known to cause prostate cancer. Now, a new study has suggested that zinc may offer protection against the risk factor.   The study, led by Van Wijngaarden, an assistant professor in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Centre, zinc stimulates production of a protein that binds cadmium thereby taking it out of circulation and reducing its toxic effects.   The study was based on data from a sample of 1,320 men registered in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002, which was the first time PSA levels were available.   PSA is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. The higher a man's PSA level, the more likely cancer is present.   The analysis found that PSA levels were 22 percent higher among American men who had zinc levels below the median (less than 12.67 mg/daily) and cadmium levels above the median.   In men over age 40, urinary cadmium...

Genetic alteration behind prostate cancer in mice and man confirmed
2008-01-29 11:15:00
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, have confirmed that a molecular change found in human prostate cancers is responsible for initiating the growth of prostate cancer in mice and in human cell lines.   The study was led by Valeri Vasioukhin, Ph.D., and Peter Nelson, M.D., both investigators in the Human Biology Division at the Hutchinson Center.   A large number of human prostate cancers carry a chromosomal rearrangement causing over expression of the ETS transcription factor ERG, a protein that controls gene expression.   However, the functional significance of this phenomenon has been poorly understood, till date.   The researchers, while studying prostate cells in transgenic mice, found that up-regulation of ERG transcript initiates cancer growth. They also noticed a similar effect in human prostate cells.   It was assumed that the up-regulation of ERG in human prostate cancer triggers cell-invasion programs, leading to the displ...

Study calls for weighing pros and cons of prostate cancer drug before use
2008-01-21 10:43:00
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center say that men should weigh the potential benefits as well as side effects of a drug called finasteride before relying on it as a preventative medicine for prostate cancer.   The researchers say that they have analysed data gathered by the National Cancer Institute’s Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT), which began in October 1993 to test whether finasteride could prevent prostate cancer in men 55 years of age and older.   When the trial stopped early in June 2003, an analysis showed that finasteride could reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 25 per cent.   However, the latest analysis of the PCPT data indicates that cost effectiveness and quality of life issues associated with taking the drug are not clear-cut.   The PCPT data show that in addition to preventing prostate cancer, finasteride also reduces urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It a...

By Plato RosinkeEveryone should know that when testosterone is metabolized, it produces DHT as one of the by-products, which is what allows your muscles and erections to grow. That is a good thing! However, DHT that doesn't get burned up during sex or working out is also what is at the root of your prostate problems to begin with. The fact of the matter is that DHT is always being produced, and a lot of us simply cannot burn it off fast enough--no matter how much we work out in the gym or how much sex we have.In the case of prostate problems, one camp blames a lack of testosterone while the other camp blames too much of it. I have even heard of a doctor suggesting castration as a means of preventing the spread of prostate cancer because he believed it was the only way to prevent testosterone from acting as fuel for the cancer.Talk about a case of throwing away both the baby and the bathwater!I'm sure that we've all heard at some point or another the notion that more sex is the sol...
