All their batters managed to get good starts before off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (three wickets) and pacer S. Sreesanth (one wicket) made some inroads into their line-up.At the close of play, Jacques Kallis with 60 and A. B. deVilliers with 59 were at the crease, promising to quash any chances of India making it back into the match.Earlier in the day, the searing pace of Dale Steyn (five wickets), Makaya Ntini (three wickets) and Morne Morkel (two wickets) brushed aside the much-vaunted Indian batting line-up for their second lowest score on Indian soil.Indian captain Anil Kumble won the toss a...

Elements keep Proteas on the edge vs Ireland
2007-04-05 01:56:00 Elements keep Proteas on the edge vs Ireland By K.R. Nayar, Staff Reporter Georgetown, Guyana: South African hopes of picking two points from their match against Ireland have been kept pending. The sun kept playing hide and seek with the players as well as the groundsmen at the Providence Stadium yesterday. The sun would shine brightly for a while and as soon as the groundsmen removed the covers, it would again hide behind dark clouds. At the scheduled lunch time, Ireland was 23 for one with only 11 overs of play possible in the first session. At the time of going to press, Ireland players, to keep themselves warm, played football merrily as the worried South African players watched them from the dressing room. It was indeed frustrating for the South Africans, who were sure of picking the two points from this match. The match started fifteen minutes late due to the drizzle. South Africa won the toss and elected to field under cloudy conditions. Shaun Pollock ...
Malinga stars in Lanka?s defeat to Proteas
2007-03-29 14:18:00 Who would have possible thought that Sri Lanka and South Africa would relive the exhilaration that the sides did when the two had met in the preceding quadrennial extravaganza ? at least I did not, considering it a one sided affair for the Proteas. However, it should have been evident from the very kickoff, when Pollock ...
India tamed by Proteas in the second test match?Dec 06
2007-03-03 19:41:02 All the jubilations of the first test were silenced as the Indian team meekly capitulated in the second test at Durban. The team failed to live up to the expectations of the first test match in both departments of the game. But more importantly it was the batting which proved to be achilles heel for the Indian team. In both the innings, the openers failed to give the team a solid start and the team lost one of them within five to ten overs! Sehwag has not learnt from his mistakes and the chips for sure look down for this flamboyant batsman. In a foreign tour, only players with the tenacity and the temprament to adjust and learn quickly survive and score runs. And unfortunately Sehwag has failed to show both these traits. He continues to feel the balls outside off stump and fends for them. These are the deliveries which have brought about his downfall. I can vivdly recollect that when Sachin Tendulkar was peppered with short pitch deliveries in the last tour of South Africa by the lik...

Smith expectations as Proteas head to World Cup
2007-03-01 06:38:00 South African skipper Graeme Smith said up to six teams were in with a shout at the World Cup as he tried to dampen expectations about the new world number one's chances of glory. As he prepared to fly out to the Caribbean from Johannseburg with the 15-man Proteas squad, Smith said the players had managed to put previous World Cup disappointments behind them and confidence was high after toppling Australia recently from the perch of the one-day rankings. But he said the top-ranking did not mean that they should automatically be seen as favourites for the tournament. "We got the number one ranking over a period of time, whereas the World Cup is an event, and anything can happen," he told reporters. "There are about six countries that could either win it, or prevent us winning it." South Africa have had a miserable time at previous World Cups. As the host nation in 2003, they were embarrassingly knocked out before the business end of the competition after a mix-up over t... |
