How Much Protein Should You Eat?
2008-05-05 03:39:00
Don?t sacrifice your carbohydrates for a high protein diet, and think twice before ?bulking up? those biceps with protein to look better at the gym. Your daily diet shouldn?t contain more than 30% protein ideally, because an excess of it will do you more harm than good. So says Gail Butterfield, Ph.D., director of Nutrition Studies at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Medical Center.Dr. Butterfield says that excess protein in your diet may have harmful effects. If you increase protein without adding more calories and exercise to your daily life, instead of building muscle mass you will put your other body systems under undue stress. And eating more protein while increasing calorie intake -- but keeping at the same exercise levels -- builds an equal amount of additional fat and muscle. Meanwhile, a diet where protein is more than 30% of your calorie intake causes a buildup of toxic ketones. A ?ketogenic? diet, or one high in ketones, pushes your kidneys to excessively flush thems...

Why High Protein Diets Won't Help You Lose Weight
2008-05-04 02:41:00
Copyright 2006 Jonathan PerezThere are all kinds of diet recommendations all over the bodybuilding magazines, fad diet books, and websites that advise to divide your eating into different "ratios" and "percentages" for weight loss and fat burning. Some recommend high fat, low carb, others say moderate carbs, moderate fat, high carbs, low fat, etc.But the one thing that each and every one of these "weight loss" / "fat burning" diets say is it must be HIGH in protein.Well, I'm here to tell you the TRUTH.It is NOT necessary at all to eat a diet high in protein to lose weight.Just about everything you read says to eat 1-2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. Some even go as high as suggesting you have to not only eat high, but massive amounts of protein to lose weight and burn fat. This MYTH is due to 3 reasons:1) Everyone thinks that muscle tissue is made up mostly of protein2) Everyone thinks that either high amounts of fat or high amounts of carbohydrates will cause you to get fat...

Protein Supplements
2008-05-03 09:42:00
About ProteinTo understand the significance of protein intake to weight training individuals it will be helpful to get a little technical and start at the source of everything: What exactly is protein? and, What impact does it have on us? Definition of Protein: Protein is a formation of complex, organic macromolecules consisting of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur. It is composed of one or more chains of amino acids. Proteins are fundamental components of all living cells and substances that include enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. These are all extremely important and are required for the normal function of an organism. Protein is essential in the diet of animals for the growth and repair of tissue and can be obtained from foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and legumes. In recent times it has been developed into more potent forms in bodybuilding supplements that are widely used to facilitate intense training. Definition of Amino Acids:Chemically, an Amino Acid i...

Genetic Sequencing of Protein from T. rex Bone Confirms Dinosaurs' Link to
2008-04-25 18:43:00
Scientists have put more meat on the theory that dinosaurs' closest living relatives are modern-day birds. Molecular analysis, or genetic sequencing, of a 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex protein from the dinosaur's femur confirms that T. rex shares a common ancestry with chickens, ostriches, and to a lesser extent, alligators. The dinosaur protein was wrested from a fossil T. rex femur discovered in 2003 by paleontologist John Horner of the Museum of the Rockies; the bone was found in a fossil-rich stretch of land in Wyoming and Montana. The new research results, published this week in the journal Science, represent the first use of molecular data to place a non-avian dinosaur in a phylogenetic tree, a "tree of life," that traces the evolution of species."These results match predictions made from skeletal anatomy, providing the first molecular evidence for the evolutionary relationships of a non-avian dinosaur," says Science paper co-author Chris Organ, a researcher at Harvar...
Genome analysis reveals new protein associated with breast cancer progressi
2008-04-20 12:24:00
A novel systems-based approach that combines comprehensive gene expression profiling with genome-wide transcription factor analysis and protein-protein interaction has led researchers to an important genetic marker that can help physicians know which breast cancer patients are at highest risk and will require more aggressive treatment, a research team based at the University of Chicago Medical Center reports in the April 15, 2008, issue of the journal Molecular Systems Biology. The researchers found that high expression of a protein known as H2A.Z, which is associated with the expression of genes within the nucleus, can help physicians predict which patients are most at risk for disease spread and death. It could also serve as a new target for therapy. ?Elevated H2A.Z expression is significantly associated with metastasis and shorter survival, and it could quickly help doctors make better predictions and treatment choices for their patients,? said study director Kevin White, PhD, ...

Non-Meat Substitutes Of Protein
2008-04-02 11:27:00
Although most vegetarians consume a considerable amount of protein, they often do not absorb as much as they would on a non-vegetarian diet. This is because plant proteins are considerably less digestible than animal proteins, which contain amino acid chains that are closer or identical to human amino acid chains.Consuming animal proteins might yield close to a 1:1 absorption ratio, while consuming plant proteins, such as wheat, might only yield 50% of the amino acids needed to build a "complete protein" or a protein that can readily be assimilated into the human body.In order for vegetarians to absorb a healthy amount of protein, they must consume a variety of plant proteins to form complete amino chains. By eating vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, fruits, and whole grains, vegetarians can increase the amount of complete proteins they create by combining a number of varieties of amino acid chains.Vegetarians must also consume more foods that contain proteins because plant proteins ...
Older Women Should Exercise, Eat Protein To Preserve Muscle
2008-04-02 02:18:00
Older women loose more muscle mass than men and they need regular exercising and protein eating to preserve muscle.A joint team of researchers from University of Nottingham in the UK and Washington University School of Medicine in the US examined 29 men and women aged from 65 to 80. Previous studies showed a little difference between muscular mass of sexes. This is the first research to show significant difference in ways how aging affect muscles.Study participants were taking protein rich food and exercising regularly. By the end of study female participants had less developed muscles compared to male participants. Both men and women at age of 50 start losing 0.4% of muscle mass each year. Women appear to loose more after menopause. This is because of hormonal changes taking place in women's body. Oestrogen is the main hormone responsible for bone and muscle mass development. Menopause causes significant decline of this hormone, causing great muscle loss.Weakened muscles are making...

A Protein that Triggers Aggressive Breast Cancer
2008-03-14 10:31:00
SATB1 is a nuclear protein well known for its crucial role in regulating gene expression during the differentiation and activation of T cells, making it a key player in the immune system. But SATB1 has now revealed a darker side: it is an essential contributing factor in the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. SATB1 forms a three-dimensional cage-like structure within the cell nucleus (left) that binds to DNA specific sites within genes, reorganizes chromatin, and recruits enzymes that promote the expression or suppression of genes (right). Breast cancer cells need SATB1 to become metastatic; metastasis ? the stage when cells break away from the original tumor and spread to other parts of the body ? is the final step of solid tumor progression and is the most common cause of death in cancer patients. "In breast tumors, SATB1 reprograms...
Biologists identify key protein in cell?s 'self-eating' function
2008-03-12 10:53:00
Molecular biologists at the University of California, San Diego have found one piece of the complex puzzle of autophagy, the process of ?self-eating? performed by all eukaryotic cells -- cells with a nucleus -- to keep themselves healthy. Their finding, published in the March 11 issue of the journal Developmental Cell, is important because it allows scientists to control this one aspect of cellular autophagy, and may lead to the ability to control other selective ?self-eating? processes. This, in turn, could help illuminate autophagy?s role in aging, immunity, neurodegeneration and cancer. All eukaryotic cells dispose of bacteria, viruses, damaged organelles and other non-essential components through this self-eating process. A part of the cell called the lysosome engulfs and degrades subcellular detritus. The ability of cells to recycle and reuse the cellular raw materials, as well as to ?re-model? themselves in response to changing conditions, allows them to ad...
Protein in Embryonic Stem Cells Controls Malignant Tumor Cells
2008-03-11 21:31:00
A protein that governs development of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) also inhibits the growth and spread of malignant melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, Northwestern University researchers have discovered. Metastatic melanoma, which develops from the transformation of skin pigment cells or melanocytes, has a death rate of more than 80 percent and a median survival of less than 7.5 months. The Northwestern scientists, led by researcher Mary J. C. Hendrix, additionally found that the protein, called Lefty, prevents aggressive breast cancer cells from metastasizing. Death from metastatic breast cancer exceeded 40,000 in 2007, with over 180,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States.Importantly, Lefty is secreted only in hESCs, and not in any other stem cell type tested ? including stem cells isolated from amniotic fluid, cord blood or adult bone marrow ? or placental cells. Results of the study, described in an article in the March 3rd online version of The Proceedings of the Na...

Protein that could fight obesity discovered by Swedish researchers
2008-03-07 12:00:00
STOCKHOLM ? Researchers in Sweden have discovered a protein that stimulates the formation of fat cells, a finding that could potentially be used to treat obesity, the Karolinska Institute said Wednesday.   The protein, called TRAP (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), "stimulates the formation of new fat cells and can thus precipitate the development of obesity," the Institute said in a statement. The research was based on cell cultures and mice studies, and showed that patients with obesity have excessive levels of the protein. "This protein is potentially useful in the treatment of conditions involving morbid cachexia (weight loss), such as cancer diseases," professor Goeran Andersson, who led the study, said. "The discovery can also lead to new ways of treating obesity based on the inhibition of this protein's effect," he said. The study lasted four years and followed 14 obese women, Andersson said. The results were published Wednesday...
