On Leaving the Sathya Sai Baba Cult ? Ex Leaders and Rank-and-File
2009-11-20 11:43:00
In 1999, came the publication (August-September) of three articles in a piece entitled: Sathya Sai Baba Exposed. These had been taken up from other sources by the editor, Duncan Roads, who, quite separately and via his own sources in Australia, had suffered his own disillisionment in Sai Baba. A person close to me, who knew well that I had deafened my ears to anything inimical to Sathya Sai Baba, strongly urged me to read these articles, one of which was by the (then) head of the Australian Sathya Sai Organization, Terry Gallagher, an agricultural scientist and businessman of Kyama, in the state of New South Wales on Australia's eastern seaboard. Terry Gallagher?s had come to realise ? between 1986 and 1993 (the latter being the year of the grisly police executions in Sai Baba?s bedroom) that grave matters had been profoundly covered up, not only by the ashram officials but by local, state and central governments. Those who eventually leave commonly do not leave suddenly. There ...

CTA bus drivers union weighs strike to protest layoffs
2009-11-04 13:00:00
The CTA bus drivers union is considering a strike to protest planned layoffs of about 1,800 members of the Local 241 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, according to a CBS2 Chicago report. The union president, Darrell Jefferson, goes on to insist the CTA's budget deficit is actually $500 million, not the $300 million cited by the CTA. But the union will continue to resist any givebacks, including furlough days.Furthermore, Jefferson says: "Metropolitan Transit Act says, in section 28, that management and exempt people should make up only 3 percent of the total number of employees. We estimate CTA being somewhere like 15 to 18 percent. Laying off people and you're still gonna be heavy in management, I think you're asking for...
Sathya Sai Baba Critic Serguei Badaev: An Incisive Voice of Conscience From
2009-11-02 11:16:00
Serguei Badaev was ex-President of the Sathya Sai Organization's Moscow centre, ex-deputy National Coordinator and National Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) Coordinator for Russia. Serguei Badaev is an incisive writer with a professional background (the physical sciences), whose writings critical of the Sai sect - no less than those of others who have raised critical questions - receive no answer from Sathya Sai Baba and his officials. Nor do they explain how those with years of loving, sacrificial and dedicated service to the Sathya Sai Baba organization (what to speak in their own professions and wider communities) should, practically overnight, become demons, naysayers, and defamers.
HuffPo Compiles 2009's Funniest Political Protest Signs
2009-10-19 14:30:00
Photo from Democratic Underground via Huffington PostI love a good protest, but what I love even more is a good protest sign. This is why I was delighted to see that Huffington Post had compiled a gallery of the funniest political protest signs from 2009. Mostly they hail from the health care reform protests, the conservative tea party protests, the Glenn Beck-inspired 9/12 gatherings and the Proposition 8 gay marriage protests and counter-protests in California. Some of the signs fall into the, "Oh my God, you can't be that dumb," category, such as one gem that read "Don't Steal from Medicare to Support Socialized Medicine." Others, however, are just downright clever....
Michelle Goldberg, US Author-Journalist, on Sathya Sai Baba (1)
2009-10-07 23:53:00
It is one of the gambits of pro Sathya Sai Baba activists like Indulal Shah (when he was active), Dr G.Venkataraman and his virtual counterpart Gerald Moreno, to portray highly reputed media journalists as sensationalist, and so on. In their offensive and denunciatory style, they fail to credit world leading media journalists, and the researchers as well, ...
Thorbjřrn Meyer: Is Democracy Such A Good Idea?
2009-10-05 00:06:00
My regular readers will have noticed my use of - not uncommonly - phrases of the sort: Sathya Sai Baba and certain of his core leaders. Worthy leaders have their assistants or followers; oppressive ones have their henchmen. Thorbjřrn Meyer, European Central Coordinator of the Sathya Sai Organization, is regarded by a number who know him well as being of the henchman variety. Meyer's lack of accountability is great. Abandoned are essential values of democratic accountability, as if they had never been heard of. This is of course true in regard to various other key Sathya Sai Baba leaders; however, Meyer is one of the foremost of the guru's leaders, and his accountability the greater. He is right at the hub of the cover up of Sathya Sai Baba, and of his monumental spiritual betrayal, and of the suppression of serious crimes that would, were India far more properly democratic, be investigated as a matter of course. Robert Priddy, when head of the Sathya Sai Organization, knew...
Sathya Sai Baba and Dr G.Venkataraman: Will They Disavow Their Idi Amin Fon
2009-10-01 23:09:00
Deputy head of the international Satahya Sai Organization and Head of Sai Global Radio G. Venkataraman?s ?Mr Idi Amin? Report (/Journals/Vol_05/01JAN07/11-pr-asanthi-diary) stands as an appalling affront to those who suffered at this monstrous dictator's hands. Note how Venkataraman, on Sai Global Radio, refers to Mr Idi Amin. I may add that it is interesting that Amin claimed to have a direct line to God. Did he have in mind, specifically, Sathya Sai Baba? Perhaps Amin scholars may have something among their files, and can let us all know. Here is what G. Venkataraman wrote:

?BILD? Story. ?Guru Wants Sex? (Sathya Sai Baba)
2009-09-13 02:24:00
The article below, in which Jens Sethi recounts being sexually abused by Sathya Sai Baba, is from the magazine 'BILD' of Munich on 21st August, 2000. Wikipedia states that 'BILD' is "the best-selling newspaper in Europe and has the sixth-largest circulation worldwide". About a year earlier, NEXUS Magazine (Australia), August-September 1999, featured three articles on Sathya Sai Baba, containing serious allegations. One of these was the testimony of a German husband and wife, Jens and Gurprit Sethi who had been devotees, but had left him.The other articles were the testimony of Terry Gallagher, (who, on principle, had resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia) and Hans de Kraker, also Australia, who had likewise investigated allegations of Sathya Sai Baba's serial sexual abuse of boys and young men. Kraker was, for a number of years, head of the Western Canteen at Puttaparthi

Over the past hour or so, I’ve been regularly checking Yahoo!’s homepage to see if they offer any news or link any headlines about the massive Tea Party protest against big government in our nation’s capital.  With as many as two million people attending, you’d think it would merit more attention than a petition with ...

Will there be a protest at Belmont CTA over alleged homophobia?
2009-09-11 05:17:00
Photo Credit:zol87 Will an incident of alleged homophobia on the CTA spurn a protest on Friday evening? Earlier this week a CTA rider alleged that while at the Belmont El station they were subjected to homophobic remarks by CTA employees.   Tonight on Facebook there are rumblings of a porposed protest at the Belmont Station tomorrow night.  There is also an anonymous Craigslist posting in the Chicago M4M section outlining the details of the protest and attempting to reach out to the community. I'll continue to update this post as information comes in....
Christian Rights and Protest Part 1 of 3
2009-09-06 21:54:00
Should Christians take part in causes that reflect what they believe? How about if we know we're right and can use Scripture to back it up? Is it our “duty” to fight for what is morally right? Most Christians that I've spoken to say “yes” but let's not rely on human wisdom and reasoning; let's see what the bible says... Jesus lived in a country which was occupied by a pagan power. There were heathens and Romans walking the streets of Jerusalem, the holy city. Most Jews despised the Romans and referred to them as “dogs.” Some even banded together to use violence against the Romans when the occasion was ripe and they called themselves the Zealots. As the Son of God in God's land, what steps did He urge against the overlordship of the Romans? Absolutely none! There are no words of resentment, no threats, no instruction to his disciples that they must resist the Roman rule or seek to get rid of it. There is not one instance in the whole of the four Gospels records wher...
Christian Rights and Protest Part 2 of 3
2009-09-06 21:51:00
How About a Passive Demonstration Like Signing a Petition?Clearly the duty of the disciples is to “seek peace, and pursue it” (Ps 34:14; 1 Peter 3:11); to “follow peace with all men” (Rom 12:18). But does the teaching of Jesus Christ suggest active involvement in a campaign for peace? Our responsibility to be peacemakers are for in the home, at work, or among the people we meet. However, that does not give us license to put pressure on those in authority. You ask what about Jesus' actions when he rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees, or overturned the tables of the moneychangers? Jesus' action, as the Son of God, was directed at abuses within the religious system, and in regards to his Father's house. He did not campaign for secular causes. Should a Christian Protest? Those who petition are claiming the right to make a demand of worldly authority; the disciples, however, discounts his earthly citizenship. (Philippians 3:20) and makes no claim upon those who govern him....
Christian Rights and Protest Part 3 of 3
2009-09-06 21:50:00
God is in Control We might think that the only way in which things can be put right is by political or social means, or even by believing that good morals will finally conquer the bad. But this is not a biblical teaching. There is a much more far-reaching principle revealed in Scripture. Despite appearances, God is in control and is active in the affairs of men and nations. Here is the plain teaching of the bible: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. 21He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.” (Daniel 2:20-21) “The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men.” (Daniel 4:17) The governments and rulers of men are appointed by God, whether these prove to be good ...
Gerald Moreno?s Attacks On Individuals and Institutions Critical of Sathya
2009-08-28 14:57:00
How could any Sathya Sai Baba devotee - of those many who are decent and sincere - bear to read Gerald Joe Moreno's writings? The constant welter of the latter's constant, strident, vituperative and demeaning posts to the Internet can, even at a quick glance, be gauged by the titles of but a small portion of his links, which, for convenience, are posted here: Partial List of Gerald Moreno's Vast Postings Contra Sathya Sai Baba Critics. Threats and Political Protest
2009-08-20 00:06:00
From the associated press Threats, jeers saturate angry health care debate. The AP certainly isn’t on the side of gun rights but they do shape peoples opinions.

Westboro Baptist church of hate set to protest in Chicago
2009-08-01 17:48:00
Photo Credit: Michael Lehet via Flickr The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS - best known for picketing US military funerals has set it's sights on Chicago once again with scheduled protests at several synagogues around the city starting Monday morning. Late last year the WBC felt it necessary to bring their particular brand of hatred to the Center on Halsted baring their signs of 'God Hates Fags' 'Fag Xmas' among others.  At that time the WBC did not follow through on their promise to protest directly in front of the Center on Halsted, instead they sought refuge in front of the police station located at the corner of Halsted and Addison so they could make a quick getaway. Well...
St. Pete Times drops the ball when covering Channel 8 protest
2009-07-16 21:48:00
When Alexandra Zayas, from The St. Petersburg Times, called to talk about the Channel 8 protests, I couldn’t have been happier. Intelligent, friendly, compassionate – Zayas understood the topic and had done the research. She was covering the protest and surrounding story, gathering opposing points of view from friend and foe alike. Hers would be a well-rounded story. I could just tell. So I was happy to contribute a verse. But then the editors at the Times dropped the ball. They reassigned Alex and gave her story to Ileana Morales, whose account of the protest is half-assed. I’m not blaming Morales. She was probably working on a tight deadline with a word-limit more appropriate for elementary school book reports. The blame lies with The St. Petersburg Times. When they give more space to stories like this one about a horror film, one can’t help but wonder why an important media event like the Channel 8 protests got barely 260 words. Unlike this video, their ...

Petition For Official Investigation Into Sathya Sai Baba Cult
2009-07-10 00:00:00
A key difficulty facing an authoritarian, suppressive, unaccountable sect such as the Sathya Sai Organization is this: When there are serious scandals being hushed up, there is -: organized, networked dissent and public exposure, and in other ways quiet disruption and internal decay that happens quite apart from formal, focused, widespread efforts. the exponential spread of crisis for the organization. The well-informed leaders of "the Secret Swami's" (c.f. the BBC) know and suffer the effects of these three factors. It suits them to allow ignorant and unconscionable voices to attack those who have responsibly and clearly raised the issues in various parts of the world.

A *Call in Conservative* Protest I found this over at Conservative Libertarian Outpost, and I have got to tell you, Patrick is a good personal friend, but this post just lit me up! South Chicago Meter Protest, Sit In Update
2009-06-25 21:59:00
Despite temperatures in the 90's, protesters are still standing, sitting and marching strong in 8800 block of S. Commercial Ave. in the South Chicago neighborhood. "We've been out here all day again, kind of like guarding the center," said Robert Garcia from the Centro Comunitario Juan Diego.  "Someone had seen a (LAZ crew) truck pass again earlier and then make a u-turn down the block then leave." Protesters feel their presence in front of the installation site of that new paybox is deterring the new Pay & Display units from going in. "That's what everyone is saying," says CCJD Director of Communications Stephanie Puente. "We feel we're keeping them away. We saw a (LAZ) truck come between 8 and 8:30...

100+ Demonstrators Protest Parking Meters
2009-06-19 20:28:00
There are no parking meters on East 106th Street in front of 10th Ward Alderman John Pope's office. An irony, that made the protest against Chicago's parking meter lease deal and the threat of new meters on a two block stretch of S. Commercial St. that much more delicious to Friday's protesters. Over 100 people, many wearing T-shirts the same bright orange color of a Chicago parking ticket, showed up to voice their frustrations with the parking meter issue in the South Chicago and East Side neighborhoods....
Hometown Protest To Greet Duncan In Chicago
2009-06-19 16:28:00
CORE is going to welcome Arne Duncan with a good old Chicago-style protest when he shows up to speak Friday morning.  I think this may be the first time Duncan has encountered protesters since he became Secretary. The teachers are protesting the impact of Chicago's school turnaround efforts, which have despite all the kudos given them by the mainstream press displaced thousands of veteran teachers -- many of them African American -- and not always made an obvious positive difference.  Yes, you can follow them via Twitter....
Attacks By Hooligans Against Foreign Students In Australia
2009-06-05 01:06:00
In relation to attacks against foreign students in Australia, there are some tough questions. The issue is complex, and not as portrayed either by certain sections of the Indian media and zealots nor by an isolated but powerful and disgraceful class of radio biggots and their poorly-educated audiences we have in Australia, known as 'shock jocks'. No amount of misrepresentation can alter the facts that most Australians do not engage in nor approve of racism. Many who have migrated to this country from a great many countries attest to this fact. I offer some questions - very preliminary - that I think my fellow Australians will need to consider:

Astazi s-a consumat una bucata intalnire intamplatoare in Parcul IOR.
Sathya Sai Baba Man Joe Moreno?s Diabolizing Photo Alterations of Sai Baba
2009-05-09 00:26:00
The principal internet critic of Sathya Sathya Sai Baba critics (beside Dr G.Venkataraman) is Gerald Joe Moreno of New Mexico, USA. He virtually lives in virtual reality - if reality it is. For the last few years, day after day (and night, of course), he has made countless attacks of various kinds on practically anyone who has raised his and her voice in criticism of the idol of Moreno's life, Sathya Sai Baba. The 'maturity' of these endeavours questions the support given to Moreno by both leading Sathya Sai Baba and rank-and-file personnel, including members of the International Sathya Sai Organization. But one example of Moreno's disparaging 'art' and 'craft' is that against Sanjay Dadlani, whose University authorities have been beset with material that Moreno has sent to vilify and destroy this young man. So as to concentrate on his studies heading towards a Ph.D in neuro-Psychology, Dadlani has, for a considerable time, withdrawn (since early August, 2008, I think) f...
Robert Priddy?s Series On Sathya Sai Baba Man, Gerald Moreno
2009-04-26 01:54:00
I note with a certain awe at his great energy - which he by no means reserves only for exposing Sathya Sai Baba and his sect - that Robert Priddy is still adding to his series in which he refutes the writings of one hellbent on scurrility, Gerald Moreno, who leagues in his endeavours with Sai devotees including those close to Sathya Sai Baba. Moreno, moreover, has a certain status as a popular hero for those who also profess but do not carry out the spiritual teachings of Sathya Sai Baba.
Sai Baba Internet Man?s Attacks Based On Age and Physical Appearance
2009-04-25 03:35:00
I referred to the wonderful Scottish songstress Susan Boyle in my article: Susan Boyle. Unexpected Divine Chanteuse. Sweet 47. Posted by Barry Pittard on April 17, 2009. Many others, also deeply moved, have written of her - in the media, blogs and elsewhere. Her lovely example, as seen earlier that April on Britain's Got Talent, challenges us all. Many have felt that Susan Boyle can teach us a lot about qualities of true grit. Her singing and courage against stereotyping grounded on age and appearance have swept much of the industrialised world. All of us have something to learn from her, including Gerald Moreno, of New Mexico, USA, whom important members of the Sathya Sai Organization have encouraged and assisted.
Students Protest Mean-Spirited Commencement Speaker
2009-04-22 00:51:00
The Tea Parties showed how conservative and libertarians could use new media to organize and promote their ideas. Now, Glenn provides us with an example of how conservative students are using the web to protest their school’s choice of a mean-spirited partisan to deliver a commencement address: About 130 American University students have signed an online petition of sorts asking the school’s administration to withdraw an invitation to Barney Frank, who is slated to deliver a commencement address at AU’s School of Public Affairs in a few weeks. It seems these students are smart enough to read beyond the headlines and the MSM coverage of the financial meltdown.  They know that Republican politics and corporate greed did not cause the collapse, writing on their Facebook page As young Americans across the country continue to lose their jobs and “rising” college graduates struggle to find employment post-grad, should American University honestly be honorin...
Rowlett: Residents protest taxes at TEA party
2009-04-16 04:35:00
Rowlett: Residents protest taxes at TEA party In 1773 Americans threw crates of tea into the harbor to protest taxes. More than 200 years later, they protested higher taxes with tea again, this time hanging tea bags from hats and signs and gathering for TEA parties across the nation. A crowd of about 200 people gathered ...
A REAL Protest, And Nary A Teabag In Sight
2009-04-16 00:08:00
As Media Matters tells us here, quoting Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic (h/t Atrios)?Their origins -- organic, programmatic, accidental or otherwise -- don't matter much anymore. If -- and we'll have to see the numbers at the end of the day -- 100,000 Americans show up to protest their taxes, the onus to dismiss them as a nascent political force shifts to the Democrats.Oh, that?s funny. You want to hear about a real demonstration? Check this out from February 2003?Up to 10 million people on five continents are expected to demonstrate against the probable war in Iraq on Saturday, in some of the largest peace marches ever known.Yesterday, up to 400 cities in 60 countries, from Antarctica to Pacific islands, confirmed that peace rallies, vigils and marches would take place. Of all major countries, only China is absent from the growing list which includes more than 300 cities in Europe and north America, 50 in Asia and Latin America, 10 in Africa and 20 in Australia and Oceania. Many coun...
The Politics Of Protest and Individualism

On Politics Barak Obama has proven to be just as bad as George Bush. Obama supports more senseless war and slaughter, more torture, more secret prisons, more spying on Americans, more ...
