Political Psychiatry in Vancouver Raised by Candidate for Mayor
2008-11-13 19:12:00 Soviet-style political psychiatry practiced in Vancouver has been attracting attention internationally but I?d never heard it mentioned by a candidate in the civic election campaign. Until Monday. At an All Candidates meeting in the theater of Carnegie Center, Independent mayoral candidate Golok Buday (pictured above in black cap), said: ?Car 87 forces it?s drugs on ...

Love vs Fear (Encounters with Nature)
2008-08-17 21:30:00 Nature can be therapeutic. . . and it doesn't cost a dime to benefit. I have made a couple of entries previously about the process of transference and counter-transference. Freud made these two concepts popular in his practice of psychoanalysis. The subject may transfer emotions on to the therapist that are associated with past encounters with significant people. An example may entail the subject subconsciously feeling contempt, resentment, or fear for their controlling and emotionally unavailable father since childhood. For the sake of interest, lets say the father recently died with those issues left unresolved which caused enough internal conflict within to motivate the patient to seek therapy. Since the primary issue with such a patient centers around problems with male authority figures this will almost certainly surface repeatedly in sessions with a male therapist. The therapist has three tools to work with: confront ideas and comments made by th...

Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis a...
On the Wards - (Child) Psychiatry
2008-05-25 23:07:00 I stood at the end of the hallway looking out through the large windows. Outside the sky was gray, the blacktop was damp, and the trees were dripping. It was a stark contrast to the interior. Here, where I stood, the walls were brightly colored, cartoonish faces squinted, frowned, and smiled, and random quotes encouraged ...

Too Bad They Don't Offer A Discount for Psychiatry, So I Could Get My Head
2008-04-09 16:51:00 There are only 77 days until my vacation, the long-awaited trip to family friendly Orlando, Florida! Yes, I and Sweetie and Middle and The Boy and Mr Bunches and Mr F are going to pile into our car, then pile into an airplane, then pile into a condo lent us by our in-laws and hope for the best. There are those people out there (Sweetie) who say I am crazy to take this trip. To them I say: Sweetie, you knew what you were getting into when you married me.But just because my vacation will actually devolve into the comicly nightmarish logistical problem of getting the Babies! through not one, not two, but three airports does not mean that it also has to be comicly or nightmarishly expensive. While I may be crazy when it comes to planning trips, I'm very sane when it comes to saving money, which I do through BestOnlineCoupons.com BestOnlineCoupons.com has a ton of options to help us make the vacation affordable even if it won't be relaxing. We can book travel arrangments at a discount w...
Bazooka Joe's Anti-Psychiatry Blog
2008-03-27 16:27:00 This blog just fascinates the hell out of me...I just get lost in it. The link associated with the title will take you to the very first month of his writings. As a child abuse survivor, I can relate. I guess that's why it fascinates me so. As a social worker I take offense to some of it but realize he has a right to his own feelings born from his own experience and environment. The reason the link takes you to the first of his posts is that there are some beautiful poems on that first page. I remember when my abuse used to inspire me to write such prose and it makes me smile, even given the subject matter because I know he's come a long way and he's going to be alright....

Tom Cruise To Wipe Out Psychiatry
2008-01-19 18:59:00 Well, yeah. Then he can insure that no one ever gets to the bottom of his freakiness. Another video of Tom Cruise acting like a maniac and discussing his plans for world domination was just yanked from YouTube. In this one, Tom illustrates where he was really going when he took on Matt Lauer a couple of years ago. It's a rant about psychiatry, and how it's completely evil and a "crime against humanity". Sounds like a therapist might have stolen L. Ron Hubbard's parking spot at some point. In the video, Tom says ""Oh, I'm going hard on those guys, and their reign ... psychiatrists. I've had...I mean...I've absolutely had it. It's disgusting to me... No mercy... None... Psychiatry doesn't work." He also reminds his fellow Scientologists that they have the ability to "crush" psychiatry. If you're in the mental health field, you better run for the goddamn hills. Tom Cruise doesn't want you talking about your problems or taking a serontonin enhancer! Just pray to a volcano and ...
What Is a Panic Attack
2008-01-18 17:17:00 digg_url = 'URLOFSTORY';Panic Attacks can occur if a person is exposed to a stressful situation. These type of attacks are not long in duration and go away with or without medical help.At the time of attack a person can feel fear of death,or he can have a feeling that he is suffocating. On the other hand some people start breathing very rapidly.About 5% of the population experience a panic attack in lifetime. If the attack is repeated many times then it is a good idea to visit your doctor.Repeated panic attacks indicate possible diagnosis of Panic Disorder,Depression or other behavioral disorders. Many times it is seen that panic disorder is inherited from parents.According to The American Psychiatric Association "panic attack is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which 4 (or more) of the following symptoms develop abruptly and reach a peak within 10 minutes."Following are some symptoms of panic attacks - * Person can have Palpitations, pounding heart that ...
Anti-Psychiatry?
2007-12-18 03:55:00 Everyone has a philosophy of life, whether through self-study or through the inculcation of some academic or moral body. Psychiatrists are trained to believe, and rightfully so based on ...

MRI shows abnormal cognitive activity in patients with psychosis
2007-09-11 12:55:00 By Andrew Czyzewski11 September 2007Arch Gen Psychiatry 2007; 64: 999-1014MedWire News: Patients with psychosis show reduced temporal brain activity when performing certain memory-encoding tasks, study findings indicate.Among 26 patients with first-episode psychosis, the hippocampus showed normal modulation of activation during successful memory encoding, but abnormal activity during encoding of arbitrary pairs, compared with 20 healthy controls.Amélie Achim (Brain Imaging Group, Douglas Hospital Research Université de Montréal, Quebec, Canada) and colleagues speculate that people who struggle to discriminate between arbitrary and related pieces of information may be prone to psychotic disorders. The researchers note, however, that "the normal modulation of hippocampal activation observed during successful memory encoding in first-episode psychosis argues against a general inability to recruit this region."Memory is greatly affected in schizophrenia. Behavioral observations suggest t...

Cost Of Cover Ups Can Far Exceed Hoped-for Benefits
2007-07-22 21:48:00 A great irony of cover-ups is this - that once they have been exposed, the initiators of the abuses sustain a cost far greater than would have attended the prompt admission of the initial misdeeds - and genuine, exhaustive measures to address the abuses.
