Psychology 3.1.2: What does your iPhone homescreen say about you?
2009-10-19 22:50:00 OK - The gallery of iPhone screens is up. The first study is complete. Click here to see it all and be sure to comment and let me know what you think! That's my iPhone homescreen. Tweetie is first followed by Facebook - I'm a social media fiend. The rest is mostly about communication and keeping my life in order.About two weeks ago, I asked you all to send me screenshots of your first iPhone screen. It's my belief that we can learn a lot about people solely based on their iPhone screens - and, specifically, the first screen, which tells us what our priorities are.So what we have here, as it says in the headline, is Psychology 3.1.2: What does...
Concerning Attempts To Contact Former Sathya Baba Followers
2009-10-04 01:11:00 Concerning Attempts To Contact Former Sathya Baba Followers In the case of these approaches, carefully vetting is performed so as to screen off the proven attempts of Gerald Moreno and others to infiltrate or otherwise undermine former devotee work to bring about proper third party investigation of Sathya Sai Baba and core components of his international Sathya Sai Organization. It has been important for us to take advice from outstanding abuse professionals, lawyers, and so on. The temerity, and in some cases the naivity, of some requests to us for even the most sensitive information might stagger those who had not become used to it.
Succeeding in sports with sports psychology
2009-09-21 04:15:00 Whether you are an amateur or a professional you should know how important sports psychology is. The mind is so crucial to success in sports. With the amount of pressure there is to make it, it will require more than athletic talent. It is how well you are prepared mentally that is important. So if your ...
The Psychology of Saving (and Spending)
2009-09-17 15:48:00 A Twitter friend of mine, @DarryleP, shared this MSN Money article about the subtle tricks outlet malls play on customers to get them to buy by convincing them they're getting a steal. That's interesting in its own right. I had my suspicions about those places. But the thing I found most relevant this week was this line: "MRIs of shoppers' brains have shown that spending triggers discomfort. Discounting helps alleviate that ..." I know that feeling, all right. When faced with spending money, not so much on food but on anything that could be perceived as a luxury, I've got all kinds of discomfort lighting up my brain. Yes, this causes me to gravitate towards things that are significantly marked down, so...
Hitler on the psychology of the Big Lie
2009-09-16 18:06:00 Paul Craig Roberts writes on why people believe the Big Lie of propaganda even after the truth is known, and adds Adolf Hitler's advice on the psychology of it and why it works.Speaking of propaganda, I'm waiting patiently for the wide release of Michael Moore's new film, Capitalism: A Love Story, set for October 3rd. I expect much of the current economic propaganda to be outed!Did you miss Moore singing on The Jay Leno Show last night? His performance must be on YouTube by now, but I'll have to search for it later. Right now, gotta motor...
Using Psychology To Save You From Yourself
2009-06-09 22:36:00 Well this is a disturbing article from NPR: [T]hat is exactly what Obama administration officials plan to do: By taking account of human psychology, they hope to save you from yourself. This is the story of how obscure psychological research into human decision-making first revolutionized economics and now appears poised to remake the relationship between the ...

Robots, Psychology, and War
2009-05-21 21:05:00 I just read the most fascinating article about Soldiers forming bonds with the Robots they are working with over in Iraq. Check out this excerpt: "Sometimes such bonds led soldiers to risk their lives for their robots, in a strange inverse of the idea that robots would spare human lives. Singer
Dreams of Sathya Sai Baba - imaginary or real?

2009-04-25 06:19:00 People have told me that the homeless ‘choose to be homeless, they could be working and making money if they wanted to’. Free will. It is the motor oil of the capitalist engine. Those who ‘choose’ to work hard will be rewarded, those who are lazy get their just desserts. Think about how ...
Sleight Of Hand. The Slightness of Sathya Sai Baba
2009-03-09 04:52:00 The magic tricks Sathya Sai Baba employs are a pale shadow of these. But they are comparable to what a clever enough amateur friend or aquaintance of ours (or perhaps we ourselves) can learn and perform. This blog has links to YouTube and other sources which show magic tricks performed by, and in some instances explained, by some of the greatest magicians of all times. These include: Harry Houdini,David Blaine,Lance Burton,
The insidiousness of cultist indoctrination - Sai Baba
2009-02-02 08:18:00 A subtly-developed ‘delusional world-view’ is basic to cultism It depends on a number of malfunctions which are common in some lesser extent to the thinking of most people at some time or other. These become a cognitive disorder when a group of these are present at once and over time. This is necessarily the case ...
Sai Baba - personal experience vs. learned facts
2009-02-01 12:23:00 Speak only from your direct experience, never rely on any other basis. Part of his so-called ?Sai teaching? is to rely entirely on your own experience in all matters. But most perceptions are influenced by the subject’s preconceptions and many interpretations of them are at least partly pre-programmed by what one has been taught, which ...

Sathya Sai Baba - transformation of the self?
2009-01-02 17:55:00 The most positive aspect of becoming a Sathya Sai Baba follower is the hope it awakens of a transformation of societythrough voluntary and selfless service to others. The emphasis is also very much on self-improvement, though observably this turns out very largely to be less evident in action than in theory. Because one?s ideas and ...
I?m Dreaming of a Green Christmas
2008-12-05 14:49:00 Having a Christmas Tree at this time of years is common and expected. Most Pagans I know have one too, but call it a Yule Tree. Public Suicide Fad Hits Argentina
2008-11-23 02:41:00 Warning! Graphic footage! Do not watch if you are easily upset!Updated November 23. If any readers can speak Spanish well, I would love to have a Spanish translation of this post. Thanks. The public suicide fad has spread to Argentina. Above is the video of the live TV suicide of Mario "Malevo" Ferreyra, an Argentine former police official. He killed himself on live TV in Tucumán Province, Argentina. An 8.4 MB version of the video with better resolution can be downloaded on this site here.Malevo Ferreyra was Chief of the Brigade of Investigations of the State Tucumán in Argentina in the late 1970's at the height of the Dirty War. In 1993, he was convicted for murdering three robbers in 1991.He escaped from the courthouse clutching a hand grenade in each hand (!) and later turned himself in after the former governor of the province reduced his sentence. He served seven years for the killings. He ruled Tucumán with an iron fist before, during and after the Dirty War.A warrant was issu...

Time To Ban the Internet
2008-11-22 10:09:00 Incredible.I found myself laughing when I first heard about this story, but although I realized I should not be laughing, I kept on laughing anyway. This story is just too absurd. When I read about the father's reaction, I quit laughing.I admit I am a bit exasperated with folks who keep trying to kill themselves over and over. A part of me lines up with the social worker who got so tired of listening to the guy threatening suicide over the line that he drove over to the guy's house and helped him do it.That part of me says, "Hell, just kill yourself already."I've known an attempted suicide, close to me. It was a one-time thing, I heard about it soon after he tried it, and I don't think he will do it again. I think it had to do with some psych drugs he was taking (Xanax in this case). Folks like that surely need to be saved. Those that are constantly attempting suicide, I am not sure.(Now) famous Myspace page of his friend who announces that he's dead to the world, many folks' ...

Obama's Secret Weapons: Internet, Databases and Psychology
2008-10-30 22:34:00 Source: WiredDuring a sweltering Friday evening rush hour in early October, Jeanette Scanlon spent two-and-a-half hours with 20 other people waving a homemade Barack Obama sign at the cars flowing through a busy intersection in Plant City, Florida."I got shot the bird one time," laughs the easy-natured Scanlon, a 43-year-old single mother of three and a Tampa psychiatrist's billing manager. "That wasn't the thumbs up I was looking for."Scanlon is one of an estimated 230,000 volunteers who are powering Obama's get-out-the-vote campaign in the swing state of Florida. And while sign-waving is a decidedly low-tech appeal to voters' hearts and minds, make no mistake: The Obama campaign's technology is represented here. Scanlon organized the gathering ? and 24 others since September ? through Obama's social networking site, my.BarackObama.com. Similarly, she used the site's Neighbor-to-Neighbor tool in September to find registered voters in her own neighborhood, so she could canva...

Using Reverse Psychology, Al Qaeda Endorses Obama
2008-10-25 20:30:00 It?s a bit shocking, really, that the Washington Post rushed to print an alleged endorsement of John McCain by Al Qaeda. Missing was any verification by authorities that it was authored by anyone in command of any of its tawdry, misanthropic, holier-than-thou, spiritually moronic band of woman-beating, bombing and beheading throwbacks. One wonders what the ...
The Psychology Of Weight Loss: Part 6 - It's Not About Numbers!
2008-10-07 18:04:00 The Psychology Of Weight Loss: Part 6 - It's Not About Numbers! was written by Greg Ryan from resolutions.bzIT?S NOT ABOUT THE NUMBERS!The health clubs are always racking their brains trying to figure out why they have such a hard time keeping members coming back. Most owners would argue that cash flow and profit margins are the most important reason to retain membership. Yes, but what drives customers to these health clubs? These owners have lost touch with what matters most, the customer! Give the customer more than they expect and they will continue to do business with you. Selling a product or service is about people more so than numbers on a spreadsheet.SINK HOLES VS. POTHOLESI want you to think of this principle in your workout. You know it is very easy to get burdened down with all the details of an exercise and diet program. While guidelines are necessary, at times focusing too much on the numbers can and will set you up for failure. You may start to think all this counting c...

The Psychology Of Weight Loss: Part 2 - How Are You Motivated?
2008-10-06 18:04:00 The Psychology Of Weight Loss: Part 2 - How Are You Motivated? was written by Greg Ryan from resolutions.bzNew Years Resolutions do not work because you are really not motivated when you think you are. On the surface you may be, but deep down you are not. That is why by April, that membership to the gym, those new clothes and that new found motivation has all but disappeared. When it comes to weight loss and sticking to an exercising program you are motivated from two emotions; fear and pleasure. You are also pushed from two directions; internally and outwardly. Out of the four choices there are two good ones and two bad ones. In other words, two that will help you stick to losing weight and two that will eventually hinder you. Do you know which ones they are? What motivates you to exercise? Fear of your health or Pleasure of feeling betterWhat drives you to exercise? Internally vital signs or Toned arms and legsI best way of staying motivated is a combination of both. However, you ha...

Evolutionary Psychology and Political Incorrectness
2008-09-03 21:54:00 I found this gem of an article while perusing Psychology Today, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite magazines. I won't reprint the entire thing here, since it is long, but here's the link. Quote:Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature Why most suicide bombers are Muslim, beautiful people have more daughters, humans are naturally polygamous, sexual harassment isn't sexist, and blonds are more attractive.Alan S. Miller Ph.D., Satoshi Kanazawa Ph.D. Quote:The implications of some of the ideas in this article may seem immoral, contrary to our ideals, or offensive. We state them because they are true, supported by documented scientific evidence. Like it or not, human nature is simply not politically correct. Glory hallelujah! Finally, somebody is willing to tell truth even if it hurts somebody's feelings. Quote: Men like blond bombshells (and women want to look like them)... Men prefer young women in part because they tend to be healthier than older ...
What Do The "Psychos" Look Like?
2008-08-29 06:59:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated September 2:As I mentioned in a previous post, for about 25 years now, I've been hearing people tell me that so and so is a child molester, so and so is a psycho, so and so is a pervert, so and so is a predator, so and so looks like a rapist, so and so is a serial killer, or looks like a serial killer. Or whatever.I've been checking these guys out the best I can for decades now, and not one of them has turned up dangerous yet. Every one I met was just a harmless neurotic, except for a couple of gangbangers. The gangbangers weren't called psychos anyway, they were called "thugs".I find this whole exercise bizarre. I really do want to know what the Hell a child molester looks like. People keep telling me that so and so looks like a child molester, but this makes no sense to me. Can someone tell me precisely what a child molester looks...

Love vs Fear (Encounters with Nature)
2008-08-17 21:30:00 Nature can be therapeutic. . . and it doesn't cost a dime to benefit. I have made a couple of entries previously about the process of transference and counter-transference. Freud made these two concepts popular in his practice of psychoanalysis. The subject may transfer emotions on to the therapist that are associated with past encounters with significant people. An example may entail the subject subconsciously feeling contempt, resentment, or fear for their controlling and emotionally unavailable father since childhood. For the sake of interest, lets say the father recently died with those issues left unresolved which caused enough internal conflict within to motivate the patient to seek therapy. Since the primary issue with such a patient centers around problems with male authority figures this will almost certainly surface repeatedly in sessions with a male therapist. The therapist has three tools to work with: confront ideas and comments made by th...

There before you is a river; the size and width are up to you. You cannot go around it but must imagine a way to cross. I'm One of These
2008-08-12 12:20:00 Right here. Boy is it painful to admit it, but I'm sure it must be true. Someone says one thing to me, and I can't stop thinking about it for weeks on end. I'll avoid the place where that person is, and I'll avoid any contact with that person. Plus it will set off an endless series of obsessive worries.I asked a couple of people at one of the places I hang out at if they'd like to check out my blog, and I told them it's the biggest one in the whole county. Whenever I say that, people act like, "So fucking WHAT?!" and then they never go check it out anyway. The very idea of asking someone to check out your blog is considered to be a joke. Ah yes, but Robert Lindsay is actually a major blog, with over 1,000 readers a day and even sometimes advertisers. Well, so fucking what to that too.Well, anyway, at this place where I said that, some stupid-ass worthless fucking kid (means anyone about age 18-23 or so) walked by me and said to their friend, "Hey, come check out my blog," real ...

Investing Psychology - Does Wealth Begin in the Mind?
2008-07-13 09:08:00 Traditionally the study of economics and finance is based on the assumption that people always behave rationally. Behavioral finance, the combination of psychology and financial theory, is now a growing academic discipline. This article reviews some of its key features and ...
Self-documented Folly of India?s Would-be God

Sorry About Lack of Posts
2008-06-10 05:38:00 Updated June 18:This is one of the worst times of year for me - early June. My allergies go nuts and I'm extremely tired all the time. Bottom line is I don't feel like doing much of anything. I sleep 9-15 hours a day and I need to take stimulants (asthma medication) and drink about five cups of coffee to even make a 100-mile round trip drive. If I don't do that, I will fall asleep on the road and crash my car.I'm getting allergy shots once a week now, and it's the only thing that helps with the fatigue. I also drink quite a bit of coffee every day and I need to take multiple hits off the stimulant asthma inhaler just to make through the evening without nodding off. This is a really bad time of year for the pollens, especially in the Sierra foothills, where I am at the moment house-sitting at my parents' house (I live 33 miles away in the Valley) for my 86-yr-old father (he can't be left alone) while my mother and sister are visiting my aunt in the Chicago suburbs. It's times o...

The Psychology of Guilt
2008-06-09 17:13:00 By Mark I Myhre http://ezinearticles.com-/?expert=Mark_I_Myhre Guilt exists as a fabricated emotion. It holds little or no realness. It’s hard to call it a real emotion. You see, a real emotion is one that has both a positive and a negative side. Love, fear, hate, anger, sadness, happiness and so many other emotions all have both a positive and a negative component. Not guilt. Guilt is all negative. It adds nothing to your existence. Sure, many people use it as a motivator: “I’ll feel guilty if I don’t do this.” It’s called an ‘expedient motivator’. Meaning, it’s used when you lack principle-based motivation. It’s a cheap way to inspire action in yourself and others. Guilt basically comes down to manipulation. The function - the purpose - of guilt involves manipulating yourself and others to take some sort of action or to feel some sort of way. Guilt punishes. Both yourself and those around you. Guilt contributes nothing. ...

The Psychology Of Diet Preparation
2008-06-06 04:20:00 We decide to lose weight because of any number of reasons: we don?t like the way we look, our clothes don?t fit, our health is in danger, our significant other is wandering, our job is at risk, or our kids are embarrassed. We tend to think of weight loss as something that involves only our body; surely no one ever decided to lose weight because of a fat brain or a bloated mind.Yet ?we decide? is a mental function. When and why we make such a decision depends on our mind, not our body. We may make the decision when we are five pounds heavier than we would like, or after passing the two hundred pound mark and entering true medical obesity. The actual size of the body does not trigger the decision to lose weight, such a choice in made in the brain.Since the start (and the continuation) of a diet program is a mental process, it would seem to be worthwhile to explore what factors might trigger such a decision.1. Self-Image.Each of us has a dual image: the face we turn to the world and ou...
