How Public Opinion Has Been Made Irrelevant in America
2008-07-24 00:27:00 Glen Greenwald (Salon.com) writes: One of the most striking aspects of our political discourse, particularly during election time, is how efficiently certain views that deviate from the elite consensus are banished from sight -- simply prohibited -- even when those views are held by the vast majority of citizens. This discrepancy is a potent commentary on how our democracy functions....read more | digg story

Public Opinion Polls as Propaganda at HaArets
2008-03-20 11:45:00 Israel's HaArets daily newspaper fancies itself the Israeli counterpart of The New York Times. I and others would not see such a resemblance as a source of pride. Yet there is something to it, although the NYT commits many more crimes against the trees than the thinner HaArets does. But both pretentiously high-brow rags distort and even falsify the news. HaArets does it through public opinion polls, among other ways. Political scientists and sociologists are well aware that one can usually obtain the answer that best serves one's interests and policy preferences by framing the questions in a suitable manner --or even by eliminating possible choices. That's a good reason to always be wary of public opinion polls. You have to ask, What questions did the poll ask, What alternative choices were supplied, etc. Here's an example from the Israel correspondent of the Economist, not exactly a friend of Israel or of truth. The correspondent, one Gideon Lichfield, wondered at the apparentl...

oil companies efforts are failing to change public opinion and airlines are
2007-09-04 03:49:00 US consumers don’t appear to hold positive views of many industries, according to the findings from a Harris Poll conducted in July 2007. Looking at the period 1997-2007 the only categories to show positive growth were- hospitals, banks and car manufacturers. Those with some work to do on their image included the obvious candidates; health insurers, and tobacco companies. Oil companies, always the category the public loves to hate, are still hurting despite the efforts of PR and advertising to turn things around. Most surprising was the performance of airlines, who've experienced a 40 point decline since 1997. The category was the subject of last week's Business Week cover story that suggested things are unlikely to get better anytime soon. And if you think the Summer from Hell is over, fasten your seat belt. The FAA predicts 1 billion passengers a year will take to the skies by 2015, a 36% increase from the current level. FAA officials say this year's Labor Day crunch could ...

The BZÖ reacts to it directly with two press sending. In the morning the steirische BZÖ chairman Gerald Grosz grumbles aligns: Bought inquiry! Politprostitution! On afternoon then the Kärntner sent election campaign leader Stefan Petzner praise out: The course is correct! Naturally public opinion polls are always a kind Kaffeesudleserei, sometimes more, sometimes less scientific. And naturally there are interests of the clients. In principle a saying of the former national advice of deer man applies: The best inquiry is those, which one manipulated. But as a choice-recruiting party concerned one should agree at least on how one reacts to such a publication. Best with an opinion.
