A Busy Week in Race: Fight Over Public Space Draws Our Attention
2007-09-23 16:28:00
We never have trouble trying to find something to write about regarding race, politics and communication. (Stephen pointed out Wednesday [Sept. 19] on the Internet radio program “Outside Voice” that this is evidence in and of itself that we have a long way to go on the issue). Each week, we sift through the stories that have arisen and try to focus on one to analyze. This week was tougher than most. Here were the top contenders:Fred Thompson joined the list of Republicans bailing out of Tavis Smiley’s presidential forum this coming Thursday.Cornel West gave a mind-blowing appearance plugging his new CD on Smiley’s PBS program (reinforcing Stephen’s long-time belief that he keeps his Afro not for political reasons, but because his brain is too big for his head, and he needs to protect it from the elements).Isaiah Thomas revealed that he believes black men calling women “bitches” was not as troublesome as white men doing the same thing. There was a big turnout for the ...

Paris Public Space
2007-05-13 21:26:00
I've always adored Paris' Urban Planning. It's really a republican city given the way it opens itself to its inhabitants, and, of course, its tourists- Beautiful parks dotting every neigbourhood, the various quais along the seine giving everybody an euqal chance to appreciate the river, etc, etc.Among those is the vast square in front of the Hotel de Ville, the city hall. In winter, the square is transformed into an ice skating heaven. In summer, sand is put on the square providing a place for a Parisian version of a beach volley ball. In spring it's empty but there are always activities nevertheless. In this picture, two friends are "Sailing" in front of the Hotel de Ville. It reminds me of people who "used to" play kites in the Sanam Luang which is litterally translated as Royal Court or Royal Garden in Bangkok Summer. Nowadays, I don't know anymore what people do there...Paris France fashion lifestyle chic luxury

Proposing to join the real world with the "www" to create a psycho-geographic experience, Ideas On Air wants to rename streets with Net-Art web addresses. Equipped with paper and glue, the high-tech experiment would paste street plates with web addresses."It?d be better to cover the streets (maybe, comfortably by the taxi) with a pc equipped of wireless device to watch the websites. Anyway, you?d also walk on the streets watching at the Net-Art web address and subsequently to see the relative websites."tags technorati : digital metro urban www

Who owns the public space?

[From Montgomery County, MD Green Party Blog] As the primary season draws to a close in Maryland, there’s been a lot of talk about who should be included in debates and while it is a tough question with no easy answer (if you include everyone who files in the primary season than you’ll have a debate [...]
