?Surface subway? vs Porr
2009-09-21 05:13:00
Do we really need Porr and more highways if we have a bus rapid transit system like in Bogota? I like the idea of encouraging people to cycle to the nearest bus rapid system main stations. Look how they store the bicycles – a lot less space consumed than car-parks. Thanks to nkkhoo for the link.

At least RM500/mth to use the second Penang bridge
2008-06-07 05:48:00
Now that oil prices have gone up by 41 per cent and diesel by even more, our planners should scrap the proposed second cross-channel road link for Penang. If the RM4.8 billion second Penang bridge (all 24km of it, 17km over water) sounded like a bad idea before the oil price hike, today it sounds like ...

Bridge near Shanghai works out cheaper per km than second Penang bridge
2008-05-02 18:19:00
Is the cost of the second Penang bridge way too high? China yesterday inaugurated one of the longest sea bridges in the world - a six-lane 36km link (27km over sea) to connect Jiaxing city near Shanghai with Ningbo in the province of Zhejiang. And what is the cost? 11.8 billion yuan, which is RM5.3 billion ...
Thank God for the ?mega setback? to Penang infrastructure projects
2008-04-27 17:53:00
Today, I just want to thank God for confounding the proponents of the mega transport projects in Penang and delaying them (just like he confounded those pushing for the PGCC project). The bridge partners are now arguing about cost apportioning and design costs - and the project hasn’t even started! Porr, on the other hand, ...
Watch out! They are still talking about monorail and Porr
2008-04-21 12:20:00
Let’s face it. An underground rail system would be too expensive for Penang and, with 700,000 people on the island, it is doubtful if Penang has the passenger loads to justify such a heavy investment. They say a subway system would cost many times what a monorail would. But even a 35-km monorail network would cost ...
Public Transport: Aussies whinge too
2008-04-18 00:57:00
Picture the scene. You're on a long, late night train ride out of the city back to the sticks. You've been shifting about in your seat for ages trying to find a comfy snoozing position. You're now on your third seat because this one doesn't involve you having to pull your head back onto your shoulders after it's lolled off. You're just drifting off nicely when suddenly, a gruff aussie voice shocks you back into consciousness by shouting, "Which station are you getting off at?" before moving off to the next carriage to repeat the question. This is the standard procedure practised by Queensland Rail (QR) conductors every evening on the Brisbane to Nambour service. They go along the whole train, writing down everybody's destinations. They do it so they don't have to stop at all the stations and can practice breaking their own rail speed record in getting to the other end. God help you if you're unfortunate enough to be waiting to get on at any of these optional-ised stations. ...

Organisations in Sweden 69 Rikstrafiken The National Public Transport Agency Tender for ferry services to Gotland Rikstrafiken as responsible Governmental organisation for acquiring an operator for the ferry service to the island of Gotland has entered the tender process for the concession period starting 1 January 2009. Rikstrafiken coordinates the public transport sector throughout the country, so that public transport, by train, air, bus and sea, creates unbroken, accessible travel chains for the travellers. The main strategy is based on the unexploited cooperation opportunities between established players which,if exploited, would result in an improved long-distance public transport. In order to complete its assignment, Rikstrafiken cooperates with other transport authorities (for road, sea, aviation and rail), other authorities and the local public transport companies, industry organizations, transport operators and other interested parties. --- Cast Your Vote:...

Few make the switch to Singapore public transport
2008-01-14 23:55:00
Few make the switch to Singapore public transport    FOR financial consultant Daryl Ng, 31, the decision to leave his car at home and take the bus to work was easy. When he started a new job in Raffles Place three months ago, he was facing a $200-a-week bill for petrol, ERP charges and parking. So, he decided to take a direct bus from his home in East Coast Road. The fare: $15 to $20 a week. His electronic road pricing (ERP) costs alone would have come up to about $27 a week, including the new evening charge on the eastbound East Coast Parkway. While the commute takes twice as long on public transport, he says sacrificing a little early-morning shut-eye is a small price to pay for huge savings. ‘I used to work near Lornie Road where I didn’t pay any ERP charges,’ he said. ‘But when I started my new job in Raffles Place three months ago, it was just a logical decision.’ Mr Ng is the type of commuter the Government has been yearning for. In recent years...

Beijing?s Public Transport
2007-11-29 03:12:00
Beijing?s Public TransportAccording to a report in City Weekend magazine public transport usage within Beijing is at an all time high. The report suggests that use of the new popular Line 5, along with a decrease in fares, is responsible for the changed habits of local commuters. While all of Beijing?s underground rail system is easy to use and navigate, the new Line 5 is certainly the cleanest and most user friendly part of the system. Maps light up and show the current progress along the line and there are English announcements of station names in each carriage. One of the most popular destinations for Beijing Visitors on this line is the Yong He Gong station. The Lama Temple here is well worth a visit.Tickets costing 2rmb to travel to any destination can be bought at ticket windows in each station. Multi-trip electronic cards can also be bought. Users can also add extra credit to the cards for taxi fares and convenience store purchases in Quick Stores. Most taxis are not set up to...
Prague Public transport ticket on your mobile phone
2007-11-26 23:05:00
We have a great new thing in Prague's public transport system. You can buy your ticket simply by sending short message from your mobile phone. No need to buy it at a vending machine, to put all those coins inside it and then having the ticket validated in a validating machine. You just write "DPT", send it to the phone number 9020620 and few moments later you have the "SMS ticket" in your phone. Sure, it is a little dangerous when you run down the stairs to the metro station trying to write and send that message... but it is so much faster.

Milan and Penang: Trams vs Monorail/PORR/PGCC

Greetings from Milan! I am here presenting a paper at a conference. Blueline- A public transport or killer Transport
2007-10-11 13:33:00
Fight between the blueline and general public is not a new thing. From many years, people of Delhi are fighting for a good public transport which can provide a good transportation facility while also insure the safety of the people. Large fleet of blueline buses is able to provide a transportation option to the people of Delhi but it failed in the safety concerns totally. Every day number of people becomes victim of Blueline menace and some of them are even have to lose hand with their lives. Delhi government introduced Delhi Metro for solving this problem and to some extent Delhi Metro has also provided help but it is not possible for Delhi government to run Delhi Metro on the every route, therefore an alternative good public transport is need of the hour. However, Delhi government has so far failed in providing an alternative transport facility which also provides a safety to the general public. Lots of previous incidences indicate that Sheela Dixit government in Delhi is even not...

Superbus - Are limos the future of public transport?
2007-07-13 18:10:00
The Superbus concept, which is invented by prof. Wubbo Ockels, is a concept for public transport that uses high speed, (150 – 250 km/h) road driven vehicles. The vehicles drive at high speed on dedicated infrastructure, the so-called Super tracks. The vehicles drive at normal speeds on existing roads. The basic idea is to offer comfortable, demand driven, point-to-point transport that is able to compete with cars and high speed trains.Next to the development of the vehicle itself, research will be performed into dedicated infrastructure. These Super tracks can be located close to existing highways. In winter they will be geothermically heated in order to prevent icing. By storing heat in the summer and using it in winter this system will not require additional energy. Next to that it will have a beneficial effect on road maintenance due the more constant temperature of the road during the whole of the year.In order to make point-to-point transport possible an ordering system will ...

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said it was the government?s “Chinese New Year gift” to Penang commuters. The government’s “quick” move rendered obsolete ...
Red, Green and Blue: Public Transportation
2007-04-24 18:07:00
Editor's note: In today's Red, Green and Blue, our political commentators Jimmy Hogan and Shirley Siluk Gregory take a look at the costs and benefits of public transportation. Jimmy: Public transportation is a blessing to metropolitan areas where well designed mass transit systems help reduce traffic congestion and related pollution. It's also nice to sip a hot cup of coffee and read the paper while leaving the business of driving to someone else. Planning and management of these systems is the key though in having successful acceptance by a society of car drivers accustomed to the flexibility of operating on their own schedule. The point that must be kept in mind is that public transportation is a medicine for a specific ailment and that trying to administer this remedy in areas that are more suburban than urban is often costly and unsuccessful; sometimes doing more harm than good. Policy makers must also distinguish between the goal of alleviating traffic(along wi...
Seoul Public Transportation Guide: For Bus Lovers
2007-04-16 04:03:00
When we first arrived in Seoul to teach English it took us a couple of weeks to familiarize ourselves with the layout of the city and the subway. When you spend all your time traveling underground from station to station, it's hard to get a visual grasp on areas of the city. As for taking the bus, so far we've used it to go to Costco, Joongdong (for BBQ purposes), and City Hall. Why haven't we taken the bus more you ask? Well, for starters all the bus stops are in Korean. My Hangul is mediocre (if you can even call it that) at best so taking a bus will result in us ending up in some far off place.Taking the subway is interesting at times, but when it's jam packed it can be uncomfortable. Unless it's the during the blazing heat in the summer, the air conditioning is not turned on so there is a lack of ventilation. Trust me, it gets extremely hot and stinky when the subway car is packed to the brim and everybody is breathing heavily. That's normal though and you will have to lea...
