MUGSHOT: Randy Travis Arrested For Public Intoxication
2012-02-06 20:11:00
Country star Randy Travis was arrested for public intoxication right in front of a Baptist church in Dallas, Texas at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday (February 6). Randy was simply booked, cited and released a few hours later. The 52 year-old was apparently just sitting around in his car, drinking it up (probably to forget ...

In the wake of his “blowout” defeat in Nevada, Newt Gingrich, with his “bitter, angry press conference (sort of a combination of Howard Dean?s scream and Richard Nixon?s White House farewell speech)“, contends Jennifer Rubin, “confirmed what we strongly suspected in Florida: Gingrich?s presidential campaign is caput, whether he knows it or not.” We wonder ...

How to check public data about Chicago homes
2012-01-18 06:28:00
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from reading 10s of 1,000s of comments on real estate websites, it’s this: few people know where to find public data about homes that are listed for sale, and very few of those few know how to interpret the data they find. How to interpret the data intelligently is... Read more »
Is it time to privatize the Chicago Public Library System?
2012-01-09 14:28:00
Yes I said it. I know that privatization is a bad word but the recent library cuts puts the subject on the table. We are fortunate in this community to have three public libraries within a five mile radius. The libraries being Whitney Young, Greater Grand Crossing/Gary Comer, and Avalon. The Greater Grand Crossing and... Read more »

Junk Science in Spite of the Public Interest
2012-01-05 18:17:00
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has long used hyperbole to discourage the public from consuming sugar and sugar alternatives—or really, any foods that taste good. (This is the group that deemed fettuccine alfredo a “heart attack on a plate,” after all.) Now CSPI is using the same tricks to frighten consumers away from a new no-calorie, stevia-based sweetener. The Wall Street Journal reports that CSPI is concerned that this sweetener may cause cancer, but the research CSPI cites apparently took place before the specific sweetener was even developed. But why let small details get in the way of yet another “maybe it’s carcinogenic” claim? If this refrain sounds like a familiar tune, you might recall that last year CSPI also linked 4-methylimidazole (caramel coloring used in some soft drinks) with cancer. The news media was quick to pick up the story, but often failed to notice what CSPI conveniently omitted– that researchers gave the rodents an ultr...
Public Relations Company
2012-01-03 12:20:00
There are a number of pieces to the puzzle when it comes to gaining exposure and a good reputation both online and offline. Search engine optimization is used to promote exposure on the internet. PR firms are often hired to maintain and promote the credibility of a company. Many online businesses are involved with hiring SEO firms to do the search engine optimization work that a business website need. However, they might neglect the importance of outsourcing to a public relations company. A public relations company is used to help establish public awareness of a business. Furthermore, a public relations company performs all the necessary techniques that are involved with their client’s image. A poor business image online creates an environment that will cause sales to drop off. In other words, poorly handled business relationships can cause the loss of customers. To avoid losing customers or even the ability to attract new ones, online businesses hire a public relations compa...
Sports: The Next Public Health Crisis?
2011-12-28 16:20:00
Historically, the public health community targeted infectious diseases to which people cannot control exposure and transmission. The results are longer lives for most Americans. Of course, the fortunate success of public health also means that Americans who might have otherwise died of tuberculosis or diphtheria tend to die of something else (usually heart disease or cancer). Now, the public health community justifies its interventions in terms of public funds spent on so-called “preventable” conditions. The oft-cited costs to the medical system of individual choices are the justification for such heavy-handed policy proposals as salt restriction, “Twinkie taxes,” and chocolate milk bans in schools. If saving money spent on healthcare is the end-all, absurd policy recommendations can result. And most importantly, as A. Barton Hinkle “modestly proposes” in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, granting the public health community the right to take away some choices on “social co...
GOVERNMENT ON TWITTER
2011-12-28 15:00:00
Advocacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has issued the United States Department of Homeland Security a lawsuit. The reason? They claim that the government is monitoring blogs, message boards, and social media platforms like Twitter without the public's consent. The scrutiny is said to go so far as to pinpoint specific flag words that, in turn, trigger the agency to track and monitor a user's online activity. Hmm, you don't say?

Public Display Of Infection was created out of a need to hear instrumental guitar music where melody and songwriting come first. I wanted to have an album that could showcase guitar and still be full of hooks, melody lines and strong grooves. A song has to speak to you, even when there are no lyrics. This album features mind blowing drum performances from the amazing Travis Orbin. Rounding out the line up is Matt King: a long time musician, a huge part of my sound and an incredible bass player. There have been numerous examples of social media use in public health. This article entitied, "Social Media Increasingly Used To Gauge Public Health," from November 7, 2011 - talks about this topic. Here's my quote...  One such doctor is Mike Sevilla, MD, a family physician in Salem, Ohio, who blogs, tweets and has hundreds of Facebook friends. Dr. Sevilla encourages primary care physicians to spread public health messages to patients and community members by posting on a professional Facebook page a picture of themselves getting vaccinated against influenza or eating a healthy meal. "Putting these pictures on Facebook lets people in the community know that we are doing what we tell them to do," he said. Government To Use Social Media For Public Engagement. Will It Help To Get Pe
2011-09-28 10:54:00
Last week, we had announced that the Government is warming-up to the idea of using social media as a medium to connect with the citizens. The Government reasons by mentioning that since almost everyone have an account on social media websites like Facebook, Twitter & Google Plus, it is high-time to gain a insight into public opinion. It proposes to create a “Citizen Engagement” framework to take advantage of the situation. The Government officials are unsure how to leverage social media for their benefit and has asked the Department of Information Technology to create a framework consisting of dos and don’ts for the same. The consultation with the general public regarding matters such as government projects, schemes and programs would be essential in the effective implementation of such things. But for the implementation of such a framework, the approval of various ministries like Home, Information and Broadcasting would be required, which might delay the process a bi...

Calling All Who Wish To Attest, In Public Or In Private, Against Sathya Sai
2011-07-24 03:22:00
We very much have in mine after many who have aided the profound Sathya Sai cult cover ups. These include officials, past and present, in the Sathya Sai Central Trust, and the international Sathya Sai Organization, and the Sathya Sai Society of America, and officials in areas such as Indian local, state and central governments, past and present. They should all begin to think of their conscience. If they have one. And of the honor of their families. And of the feelings, too, of their peers in their professions, trades and wider communities. They may like to consider that there could be avenues of repentance for their own terrible deeds - including turning a blind eye to those around them who perpetrated the crimes and spiritual betrayals. Some persons may like to assist us substantively. They can write to Robert Priddy or me, Barry Pittard or Jay Narain c/o the Hunt and Hunt law firm, Australia. But all should think of the awesome power of the subpoena. And of gaol sentences, ...

That trust has been rapidly eroded since the ...
Photo Hunt 061: Raising public Awareness, khmer-style
2011-06-18 09:46:00
I was in Kratie long ago, stopping there to spend the night, on my way to Laos. The bus stopped at the provincial centre, also called Kratie, and the sign below caught my attention as it stands out prominently in the town's main street.                       I learned from the bus conductor that it was put up by the local commune office in Kratie town to call the entire community's attention and action to clean their surroundings, especially the river. Overall, the billboard is very informative and the design looks vintage from yesteryears ? like the 1950s bright colours and graphics where everyone looks spic and span. Don?t you think so? The main illustration in the signboard shows people cleaning up. On the upper right side  box, it shows a person throwing a (plastic) bagful of garbage into the river. Underneath that is another person throwing plastic from the window of a moving bu...

2011-06-17 19:19:00
Friday's Public Affairs-Rod Blagojevich marathon features four consecutive episodes of the TV show, "Public Affair with Jeff Berkowitz," focusing on the federal Chicago retrial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich,  54.  The case went to the jury (eleven women - including three minority jurors and one man) last Friday. The  jurors, after deliberating for five days, are taking a three day weekend and will resume their efforts to reach a  unanimous decision on the 20 count indictment on Monday at 9:00 am.   Blago was convicted last summer in his first trial by the Feds  of "lying to the FBI."   The jury was hung on the remaining 23 counts of the indictment, both as to Rod and as to those counts involving his...

Test public housing residents for drugs
2011-06-14 15:26:00
The idea of testing Chicago Housing Authority tenants for illegal drug use is drawing the usual, tiresome objections from the usual, tiresome complainers: It's humiliating, offensive, invasive and insensitive. It's more "blaming the victim" and punishing "people for being poor." But, it's also a good idea. Anyone 18 years or older who applies to become a CHA resident or who renews a housing lease would be tested under the proposal. Those testing positive would be directed into a free drug-treatment program funded by the city. Those refusing treatment could face eviction....
End K-12 public school teacher tenure (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Quinn signs education reform law. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign today what's called "sweeping" education reform, a step in the right direction in several regards: Longer school days and a provision allowing school to place competence over length of service in the firing and recall of teachers. Competent teachers will be able to secure tenure in three years after qualifying by meeting tougher qualifications. But here's a question: Why any tenure at all?...
CTA's Claypool: "Policymakers have disinvested in public transit&
2011-06-09 14:30:00
CTA President Forrest Claypool called a spade a spade during Wednesday's board meeting: "Policymakers have disinvested in public transit, and yet we know that public transit is wealth-producing, job-producing, revenue-producing,''Here's hoping he's not showing his cards too early and and doesn't get trumped by the Illinois Legislature, whom he may need later to help balance the 2012 budget. My full-time job prevented me from covering the board meeting, but the Tribune's Jon Hilkevitch wrote a full report, including this gem of a quote:Despite the positive role of transit in making neighborhoods and commercial areas more valuable, the amount of public subsidies the CTA receives is "subject to the discretion of the appropriators in Springfield rather than (being) automatic,'' he said."It's really...
Can the CHA really drug test public housing residents?
2011-06-08 22:01:00
There's a lot being said about the Chicago Housing Authority's new proposal to drug test all of its residents. Many residents have come out against it. Others are all for it - saying they think it'll make public housing safer. But I wanted the facts. Is drug testing legal? Will it keep people safe? Does it make sense? I sat down with Ed Yohnka, director of communications and public policy for the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union, to get answers to these questions. I'm going to tell you what he told me - my questions, his answers. Read it and decide for yourself. More at chicagoreporter.com...

Dems Deny Vote on Fair Map Proposal; Shun Public Input in Favor of Partisan
2011-05-31 14:00:00
From the office of Ill. GOP Minority House Leader Tom Cross... In a stunning reversal of their oft-repeated pledge to lead an open and transparent redistricting process, House and Senate Democrats introduced a brand new partisan legislative map late yesterday which was different from the one publicly released last week. This bait-and-switch follows weeks of public hearings held throughout the state to obtain local citizen input on how Illinois' new map should be drawn; a mere days after three public forums held within the past week on the original publicly-released map. So much for transparency. Meanwhile, House Republicans kept our pledge to introduce a Fair Map to produce new districts equal in population, in compliance with both the state and...
Ideas for fixing public transit start with more RTA power, control
2011-05-31 14:00:00
CTA President Forrest Claypool has completed two-plus weeks on his new job. I heard he'll be in Washington, D.C., this week to talk about CTA capital funding needs for new projects such as the Red Line extension and for basic maintenance for the rail lines. Sounds like the perfect time to restart the conversation on ideas to fix public transit. For today's edition, I shamelessly reprint the "recipe" of a longtime transit watcher and former RTA spokesperson, Chris Robling. Given his former job, his ideas are rather RTA-centric. But I agree with many of them - especially the overall theme that there should be better coordination and oversight by the agency that calls itself the Regional Transportation Authority. I first...

Survival of the well manicured on public transportation

Speaking of CTA horror stories, when I lived in NYC, I was on the subway one day with my nose in a book when I went to reach for the handrail and my fingers scraped something soft.  I looked up and realized I had just gently scraped some girl's face. Her FACE!And she looked tough. And she looked pissed. But, she seemed to be with someone who was either a new boyfriend or someone she was just getting to know.  If my instincts were correct, she wanted to beat me up.  But, at the same time, she really liked this guy and her mother always said don't beat anyone up on the subway on the first date.  Or something like that....
