Did I mention that the publishing industry is retarded?
2009-07-15 23:19:00
Well, it is.  I'm not going to go into details, because it will just sound like sour grapes, but seriously, it's retarded. So here's what I'm going to do:  I'm going to self-publish Mercury Falls.  That's right, you don't have to wait for two years for it to slowly grind its way through the gears the publishing industry.  Most likely, you can have it in your hands (or on your Kindle) by Christmas.  But there is one catch: to have a chance to create a successful grassroots campaign for the book, I need to have a good-size initial fan base.  So here's the deal:  I'm going to publish the book as soon as I've got 500 people signed up for the Mercury Falls interest list.  It's not an unrealistic goal; at this writing, there are 337 people on the list. If each regular reader of this blog convinced one friend to sign up, we'd be at 500 in no time. So tell your friends, family, coworkers, students, household servants -- anyone that either e...
From Havana to the United States: Publishing dreams
2009-07-11 16:00:00
Due to the embargo and the chilly relationship between the United States and Cuba,we often don't hear much about music, literature and art from the island.Sure you've probably heard of the Buena Vista Social Club, but many Americans probably can't name a contemporary Cuban writer.Well let me tell you about one and how you can get his books online. His name is Ernesto Santana and I first met him in 2002 when he was one of two plane loads of artists, writers and musicians that Fidel Castro allowed to leave Cuba to attend the Feria Internacional de Libro, the largest book festival in Latin America, in Guadalajara, Mexico.Santana is the author of "Ave and Nada," which won a major literary prize...
Can You Balance Having a Full Time Job and Running an eBook Publishing Busi
2009-06-11 11:58:00
A few weeks ago I received an e-mail question from someone who wanted to start an eBook business but was worried about also having a full-time job. This isn't as unusual of a situation as you might think. Most people, when they're just getting started, have a job. Even if someone doesn't have a traditional job, they might have other household responsibilities like raising kids. The time constraints are the same regardless. When I was just getting started, I was working in a call center providing technical support. Not only was it a full time job, but it was a tiring job. Try talking to people on the phone all day who you need to be patient with while you explain things that to you seems really easy. It can be very challenging to keep your sanity! The most important thing you can do is be realistic about how much time you have to devote to starting and running your eBook business. At the end of a day at work, you're going to be tired. It's important that you remember that your fri...

Ebook Publishing Tips - How to Create Your Own Money-Making Ebook Busines
2009-06-03 11:42:00
E-books are informative and can be used as referenced guides and this is what makes e-book publishing important. If you are planning to launch your own e-book then one of the most important aspects that you need to consider is that an e-book is like an encyclopedia of information and hence should be detailed to say the least. If you provide vague and ambiguous information then your e-book will not sell. In order to sell your e-book, it needs to have proper and correct information with facts, images and graphs, references, and high quality content.Content is the most integral part of your e-book. If you are writing an e-book on Pet Behavior training then the content should be related to that and not move away from it. If your content is good and is grammatically correct then you can go ahead with e-book publishing. But the question is how to reach out to the mass. First things first, you need to have your own web space, which you can use for e-book publishing as well as for uploading...
My Publishing Circus
2009-03-21 15:52:00
July 2004: I begin writing a book. I was a good writer in the third grade when my mom signed me up for an after-school creative writing class. I wrote a great story about Scottie Pippen complete with an illustration. I haven?t written much since. I read one or two books a year. My vocabulary has steadily gone down since age eight.October 2004: I am 8,000 words into my book, and expect to complete it within a few months. I envision fame, fortune and girls. Lots and lots of girls.December 2004: PingPongGirl agrees to help me with my book. She is ecstatic and honored that I asked for her assistance. PingPongGirl got 1380 on her first try on the SATs and reads above a third-grade level, though that was not a requirement for reading my rough draft, which belonged in a kindergartener?s marble composition book.Later December 2004: PingPongGirl regrets getting involved after reading my first section. ?Crap, crap, crap?um, okay?Let?s start with this,? is her initial reaction, probably referr...
Self-Publishing and the Exception to the Rule
2009-03-16 21:13:00
It's easy to see that the publishing industry, like the music industry before it, is undergoing major changes where in future it may not be uncommon to see writers simply bypassing the publishers altogether to sell directly to their readers. The new print-on-demand publishers (like Lulu) make it extremely easy and economical for writers to self-publish, especially where these have immediate access to on-line distribution through Amazon or Chapters. This is good, because in cutting out the middleman (publishers, retailers) costs can be kept down, yet with a much higher return from the cover price going directly to the writer. But this is also very bad, because without a publisher acting as 'referee', the reader has almost no way of navigating through the storm of self-publishing that is threatening to overwhelm us. Self-publishing is often legitimate when dealing with small niche or regional markets. As small publishers have increasingly been bought out by larger national publ...

Sams Publishing Mac OS X Maximum Security
2009-01-16 19:05:00
While Mac OS X is becoming more and more stable with each release, its UNIX/BSD underpinnings have security implications that ordinary Mac users have never before been faced with. Mac OS X can be used as both a powerful Internet server, or, in the wrong hands, a very powerful attack launch point.Yet most Mac OS X books are generally quite simplistic -- with the exception of the author's Mac OS X Unleashed, the first book to address OS X's underlying BSD subsystem.Maximum Mac OS X Security takes a similar UNIX-oriented approach, going into significantly greater depth on OS X security topics:Setup basics, including Airport and network topology security.User administration and resource management with NetInfo.Types of attacks, how attacks work, and how to stop them.Network service security, such as e-mail, Web, and file sharing.Intrusion prevention and detection, and hands-on detection tools.http://www.mediafire.com/-?d25mo2p4eri
NYT Columnist Wants To Keep Joe the Plumber From Publishing Book, Says Joe
2008-12-11 15:07:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Talk about arrogance, but apparently New York Times Columnist Timothy Egan wants to stop Joe the Plumber from being allowed to have his book published and calls the government oppressed blue collar man a “no good citizen” and a “no good plumber.” Arrogantly, Egan imagines that Joe somehow doesn’t deserve to have ...
Let The Agents Reorganize Publishing
2008-12-03 18:12:00
There’s an absolute bloodbath happening in publishing at the moment, as you can see from the headlines, much of it Stateside. Some of the slashing and burning should have happened years ago - but some of it reeks of despair and desperation. I’m not aware that any agents have been consulted over any of this. Why should we ...
Telegraph Still Publishing LIE That "Kill Him" Was Yelled At Palin Rally
2008-11-08 15:49:00
In this article ridiculously titled Sarah Palin blamed by the US Secret Service over death threats against Barack Obama they say that "kill him" was yelled at a Palin rally. This has proven to be false!SCRANTON ? The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled ?kill him? when presidential hopeful Barack Obama?s name was mentioned during Tuesday?s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.SOURCEBut apparently this means nothing to the Telegraph. They will continue to publish this lie as news and it will be believed by many. Disgusting!

Self Publishing Blues
2008-09-19 20:47:00
Every body has a book in his mind, as they say. But, everybody trying to write one is a different thing, and self-publishing one yet another. There are lots of considerations that induce people into writing about various things: people, events, ideas, issues, passions, observation, noble causes, problems and more. Some of these are pricked by their strong sense of right and wrong to raise their voice for or against a cause of their own or of their community's interest, while some others do it to cover up some disrepute and or misdemeanors. There are those who do it for amusement. And the ones for whom writing is a career. Of the many other classifications, there is a class of writers and it is a very well populated fraternity that takes its writings as a means to achieve an end. The end, of course, varies from person to person, but the mercenary passion with which the community members market (yes, market) themselves remains constant. As a sub category of this specie there are among...

Book Review: Brocabulary Coming in October
2008-09-08 00:46:00
Hey all… When I saw the cover of Brocabulary: The New Man-i-festo of Dude Talk, I was intrigued. When I see the term “bro,” I now think of two different things. The first is fraternities, of which I was never involved with in college. The second is the character Dean from the G4 TV show Code ...

Islamists Rule American Publishing Industry
2008-08-06 21:27:00
-By Warner Todd Huston America is the land of liberty. It is the place where political expression is protected by law and custom. It is the freest nation on Earth… unless, of course, you wish to talk about Islam. Then, unless you bow and scrape, unless you assert its supposed peacefulness, unless you bend over backwards ...

by guest poster and author Michelle Gagnon While I'm recovering from the weekend I have a wonderful post from Michelle Gagnon, author of The Tunnels and the upcoming thriller Boneyard. For all of you wondering where this blogging thing might be taking you, where to go with your writing or how to get to the next step of getting your manuscript published this is the post for you.Ms. Gagnon has graciously offered to respond to any questions you might leave in the comments before Friday and a random commentator will receive a copy of The Tunnels. Or if that's not rich enough for your blood go to MichelleGagnon.com and click on "win" for a chance to win a Kindle, ipod and other prizes.Make her feel welcome! ***A few years ago, when I had just begun my search for a literary agent, I attended one of Michael Chabon?s readings. During the Q & A session afterward, I asked how he had gone about getting published. He responded, ?Gee, it was really easy. My grad school professor passed my...

The Truth About Publishing, Selling and Buying Manga
2008-07-13 17:59:00
One of the top subject among all anime/manga blogs these days is the difficulities and frustrations of finding and buying the items that, as fans and consumers, we want to suport.I don't know if I'm going to be able to express well enough all the many complexities of the issues, so my apologies in advance if I seem like I'm oversimplifying or making things more confusing. To try and explain the whole mess, I thought I'd split the whole thing into three perspectives. Hopefully as I go through the process from each group's point of view, you can start to see the problem areas on your own. Honestly, I have no suggestions at all about how to fix this. Let's start with the point of view of the consumer:I want to buy a manga. I have several choices to decide how to do that. If I go to a comic book store, I can look through a copy of Previews (for which many comic stores charge, something that I think is criminal,) and decide what I want to read three months from now. The comic store...

Take A Time Out On Foreign Publishing In China
2008-06-13 10:58:00
Nearly every month some non-Chinese company comes to my law firm seeking our help in navigating the legal issues involved in publishing some sort of magazine or website in China. Their initial questions nearly always focus on WFOEs versus Rep. Offices or about bringing on Chinese staff as part owners of their planned company. Not once have we ever been asked whether it is legal for foreign owned Chinese entities (be it a WFOE or a Representative Office) to own such a business in China. So when we respond to their technical questions by pointing out that the business will be illegal under Chinese law, they are always taken aback. The more savvy among them ask how "so and so" gets away with it and we usually tell them we do not know the specifics of "so and so," but here are some of the things we know about how some companies manage to have their magazines published and distributed in China. We always add the warning that most of these methods put the magazine at risk of being "s...

HousingPANIC made a stink about this when it happened back in March 2006. But barely a news story was written, and not a peep from Congress was heard.I think it's pretty obvious to most now that your government lies to you. Your government, burdened by a $53 trillion IOU, is in a position where it has to deceive you. And if you believe the government's inflation data, or social benefit promises, you are a fool. But I think it's getting tougher and tougher to hide the truth. Now it's out there for everyone to see.You can see it at the grocery store. You can see it at the gas station. You can see it with the sea of "foreclosure" and "for sale" signs up and down your street. You can fool some of the people some of the time... And thanks to shadowstats for showing everyone the ugly truth, even if we're no longer supposed to see it...

HUNTING FOR A NEW WEB PUBLISHING GIANT
2008-06-03 23:00:00
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--News aggregation, licensing rights, and user-generated content. Every publisher has grappled with one or all of these issues as they've built online operations in the age of social media. They're also potentially ripe markets for innovation. Or at least that's the hope of four Web publishing start-ups that presented business models here Tuesday at the Under the Radar Conference, a one-day confab on social media. Four companies--AudioMicro, GumGum, Keibi, and Loud3r--delivered a six-minute elevator pitch to an audience of executives and three judges. Judges included Charlene Li, vice president at Forrester Research; Rob Hayes, partner at First Round Capital; and Jason Oberfest, vice president of business development at MySpace. Here are the online publishing hopefuls: AudioMicro What it does: licenses music or soundtracks for $1.
