Take A Time Out On Foreign Publishing In China
2008-06-13 10:58:00
Nearly every month some non-Chinese company comes to my law firm seeking our help in navigating the legal issues involved in publishing some sort of magazine or website in China. Their initial questions nearly always focus on WFOEs versus Rep. Offices or about bringing on Chinese staff as part owners of their planned company. Not once have we ever been asked whether it is legal for foreign owned Chinese entities (be it a WFOE or a Representative Office) to own such a business in China. So when we respond to their technical questions by pointing out that the business will be illegal under Chinese law, they are always taken aback. The more savvy among them ask how "so and so" gets away with it and we usually tell them we do not know the specifics of "so and so," but here are some of the things we know about how some companies manage to have their magazines published and distributed in China. We always add the warning that most of these methods put the magazine at risk of being "s...

Ben Bernanke and the Fed deviously stopped publishing M3 (money supply) on
2008-06-08 09:58:00
HousingPANIC made a stink about this when it happened back in March 2006. But barely a news story was written, and not a peep from Congress was heard.I think it's pretty obvious to most now that your government lies to you. Your government, burdened by a $53 trillion IOU, is in a position where it has to deceive you. And if you believe the government's inflation data, or social benefit promises, you are a fool. But I think it's getting tougher and tougher to hide the truth. Now it's out there for everyone to see.You can see it at the grocery store. You can see it at the gas station. You can see it with the sea of "foreclosure" and "for sale" signs up and down your street. You can fool some of the people some of the time... And thanks to shadowstats for showing everyone the ugly truth, even if we're no longer supposed to see it...

Gotta Be a Troglodyte If You Don?t Drive on the Electronic Superhighway
2008-06-06 16:34:00
I am equal parts amused/frustrated/angry when I run across a writer and/or editor who refuses to happily embrace the electronic media or does so reluctantly as if it were some kind of voodoo. Yesterday, I received my subscription copy of Free Lunch and was dismayed by Ron Offen’s editorial, “Poetry and the Web I”. ...
HUNTING FOR A NEW WEB PUBLISHING GIANT
2008-06-03 23:00:00
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--News aggregation, licensing rights, and user-generated content. Every publisher has grappled with one or all of these issues as they've built online operations in the age of social media. They're also potentially ripe markets for innovation. Or at least that's the hope of four Web publishing start-ups that presented business models here Tuesday at the Under the Radar Conference, a one-day confab on social media. Four companies--AudioMicro, GumGum, Keibi, and Loud3r--delivered a six-minute elevator pitch to an audience of executives and three judges. Judges included Charlene Li, vice president at Forrester Research; Rob Hayes, partner at First Round Capital; and Jason Oberfest, vice president of business development at MySpace. Here are the online publishing hopefuls: AudioMicro What it does: licenses music or soundtracks for $1. Launched last week, the company hosts a marketplace for independent artists to upload and license their music for $1. People...

Book Publishing Experience
2008-05-21 06:56:00
Every body has a book in his mind, as they say. But, everybody trying to write one is a different thing, and self-publishing one yet another. There are lots of considerations that induce people into writing about various things: people, events, ideas, issues, passions, observation, noble causes, problems and more. Some of these are pricked by their strong sense of right and wrong to raise their voice for or against a cause of their own or of their community's interest, while some others do it to cover up some disrepute and or misdemeanors. There are those who do it for amusement. And the ones for whom writing is a career. Of the many other classifications, there is a class of writers and it is a very well populated fraternity that takes its writings as a means to achieve an end. The end, of course, varies from person to person, but the mercenary passion with which the community members market (yes, market) themselves remains constant. As a sub category of this specie there are among...

Self-publishing brings us stories otherwise untold
2008-05-14 09:39:00
Writing a book is no small feat ? even before you start to think about a way to get that manuscript onto the shelves of your local bookstore. But much in the same way the information age has given everyone the tools to become a movie producer or a newspaper editor, it?s allowed writers to circumvent the publishing industry.Just five or 10 per cent of manuscripts submitted to publishers are accepted, and it can take six months to hear back, say organizers of a Guelph group of independent authors, who help others navigate the world of self-publishing.Those are formidable odds to face, especially after you?ve poured your soul onto the page. And so we?re impressed by the number of local folks, described by writer Renee Tavascia in today?s Here section, who figure out they?ve got a book living inside of themselves and dedicate the time to write it down.Kudos also goes out to those who organize that community, nurture its new members and help it mature. They?ve helped bring us an impressive...
Louis Vuitton, Corporate Wraithlords

Louis Vuitton are suing Danish art student Nadia Plesner for copyright infringement. A-B-P. Always Be Publishing
2008-05-12 16:30:00
"A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing." These are the words of Blake, Alec Baldwin's character in the movie version of "Glengarry Glen Ross" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt01-04348), as he talks to (more like rants) a group of real estate salesmen about the art of deal.  This scene popped into my head a few days ago as I was working on a customized Internet-facing publishing site in MOSS.  Why? Because when it comes to getting new content into your publishing site, it's "A-B-P. Always Be Publishing." Why is this important?  If you don't, your updates won't show up and your rank and file users won't be able to see them, it's just that simple.  MOSS's content management system for publishing sites is configured so that unless your content has been checked in, published, and approved it will not be visible to anyone not in your site's authoring or approval groups. If you'...
Publishing Truth About Barry Bonds

One of my refrains over the past five years is that at Baseball Prospectus, we write about baseball and we let other people write about writers and what they’re writing. Not that the coverage of the game doesn’t come up in what we do, but things that passed for content in the prehistory of our ...
Tim O?Reilly talks up web 2.0 publishing
2008-05-06 14:44:00
It’s no secret that the web has been displacing giant chinks of print and broadcast media. Web based media is dynamic, multi-media, interactive and most importantly decentralized. In this presentation ...

Scheduled Post Publishing
2008-05-02 10:31:00
I remember when I was writing a post on my WordPress blog, which was discussing the benefits of schedules post publishing. At that time this feature was not available on blogger, but it seems that this platform is getting better every day. Blogger just introduced scheduled post posting and I am very happy about that. This type of posting has many advantages and the most apparent is to schedule your posts when you are going on vacation or taking a day or two off. When you are on vacation you shouldn?t be worried about your blog and this feature will make it possible for you to be more relaxed.

Wikipedia: Publishing Plethora or Particularity
2008-04-24 17:11:00
What criteria should be used to determine what is trivial and what isn't? After all, one person's trash is another's treasure. It seems Wikipedia is caught in a subjective area. Also, the vast majority of those availing themselves of material on the site access Wikipedia's pages via search engines.

The Lighter Side of Publishing Erotica
2008-04-23 21:50:00
I would kick myself hundreds of times if I wasn't so sleep deprived, and had more energy. There actually is a lot of work behind the scenes, and the chances of me lounging around like a hedonist are as remote as gray men making contact with humans. Visitors to the magazine (right this moment) will be looking at a site with a directory. The reason for this is due to my current upload that is still current. The perfectionist in me desperately needs the preformed template that I've downloaded, and due to my hopeless attempt in backing up and shifting offline content to the live database (which made everything go haywire), I've reinstalled and fiddled around with files for two days, with less than four hours sleep. Today will make it day three - without sleep; the energy to masturbate has evaporated. Tonight (or this morning), I began and realized, much later, that the soccer began on SBS and this meant that it was after four in the morning. Ah, what the hell? I thought. May a...
