LaRussa will give Pujols Monday off
2008-05-12 18:59:00 Manager Tony La Russa plans to rest first baseman Albert Pujols Monday, potentially giving Pujols his first day off this season. He didn't start an earlier game but appeared as a pinch-hitter. "It's what I've been thinking all along. It's a good way to do it," said La Russa, who in spring training forecast two or three days off a month for the former MVP.A midgame appearance would imperil Pujols' season-long run of reaching base in 39 consecutive games. La Russa plans to start Chris Duncan at first tonight.

Pre-game confrontation sparks Pujols barrage
2008-04-10 18:37:00 Brandon Backe's bark brought back Albert Pujols' bite according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In a pregame confrontation, the Houston pitcher and Pujols quarreled about the St. Louis Cardinal's slide into catcher J.R. Towles the night before. The verbal sparring became so heated that his manager and teammates had to remove Backe from the field. With an in-game exclamation, Pujols showed he knows a way to home plate other than going through Towles. Twice. Pujols cracked his first and second home runs of the season.Breaking free of a two-for-14 funk, Pujols singled in a run in the first and then drilled the first homer, a 417-foot blast, in the seventh. What drew the ire of Backe was how Pujols' slide in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game upended the young catcher Towles. After the game, Pujols called Towles in the Houston clubhouse to apologize for the slide.

Will Albert Pujols Injury Hurt Fantasy Players?
2008-03-19 11:20:00 A couple days I quipped that Albert Pujols will have a hard time driving in runs if SS Cesar Izturis were to hit in the #2 hole given the awfulness that is Cesar Izturis (258/302/315 in 2007 and 259/295/334 career). Beyond the snark, I wanted to see how various line-up spots around Pujols have produced compared with his RBI totals and whether last season's 103 RBIs can be reasonably expected to be unrepeatable. Here are the slashstat results for the lead-off hitter, #2 and the clean-up hitter along with Albert Pujols results since 2002. Pujols: Whatever will be, will be.
2008-03-13 14:30:00 If only we could be so blase, but we've got fantasy leagues to win, damnit!I particularly like how medical issues such as "bone spurs" are just casually added in with the nasty sounding high grade ulnar ligament tear. Basically, Pujols is one awkward fall or off-balance swing away from being gone for eight months. Or he may finish the season unscathed.I think we've beaten this subject to death, so just consider Pujols to be the ultimate risk/reward pick in the early rounds of every 2008 draft. If you've got a strong stomach (and multiple teams), he should slide pretty far in every draft that doesn't contain a computer AI at the wheel.

Confirmed: Pujols' elbow is fucked
2008-03-06 22:19:00 The Cardinals' team doctor today confirmed that Albert Pujols has a "high-grade" tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The doc also says that the tear will definitely requite surgery at some point, the only question is when. Pujols, of course, wants to try to play through the pain this season, even through the tear is just one of his problems (though probably the biggest). He's also dealing with bone spurs and arthritis in that elbow.I can't imagine what is driving this guy to not have surgery. It's my understanding that the injury can't get any worse by playing, which is why doctors have given him the go-ahead. But it's going to hurt like hell this season, and every month it's going to hurt more. If Pujols will inevitably need surgery, why not get it done now? (Or, more accurately, why not get it done this past off-season?) It's not like the Cardinals can compete for a World Series title this year with the weak-ass roster they have. (Unless the Cubs comp...

Cardinals | Pujols will not have elbow surgery until needed
2008-03-06 12:35:00 Matthew Leach, of Cardinals.MLB.com, reports St. Louis Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols (elbow) will not undergo Tommy John surgery until it is necessary, according to team physician George Paletta. Pujols has a high-grade tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow as well as bone spurs, inflammation and arthritis in the joint. The ligament condition has not appreciably worsen since the initial 2003 injury, but the surrounding issues have become somewhat more pronounced over the same span. Pujols was given three options during the winter: to have reconstructive surgery, have arthroscopic surgery or treat the symptoms of the injury while still playing. Pujols has decided to continue to play. Pujols has expressed optimism that he will be able to manage the condition during the season, but if the pain is worse than last season, he has said he would shut his season rather than play through the pain. The Cardinals will try to treat the injury’s symptoms and keep him playing frequ...

Odds & Ends: Albert Pujols, Brad Lidge and Brandon Wood
2008-02-24 02:12:00 Since Albert Pujols announced he won't play through injuries the same way he has in the past, fantasy players have begun to re-evaluate where he should be drafted. I know I have no intentions of taking him with a mid-1st round selection. His ADP has fallen to 7th, but the last three mock drafts I have taken part in, he has gone 10th twice and 13th. My guess is he will be too hard to pass up with the 12/13 picks in 12-team leagues without additional negative information. * So the Phillies trade for Brad Lidge to solidify their bullpen and, on the first pitch, he catches a cleat and hurts the knee he had surgically repaired this past off-season. Tomorrow is the day Phillies' fans and fantasy players wait for. Will Lidge lose significant time? Who will close then? Tom Gordon and who? * Reports have Angels' prospect Brandon Wood moving back to SS in AAA this year. If something happens to Erick Aybar, Macier Izturis or Chone Figgins, do not be surp...
