Miranda Husain, freelance journalist and a writer, also an active participant at the event reports. We are happy to humbly term our discussion group with Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Loraine Adams a resounding success, with most of those gathered proudly showcasing their verbal animation skills!Ms Adams may now be known to many as a critically acclaimed novelist. However, her extensive career in political and investigative journalism means that behind the creativity lies a woman with a solid understanding of US foreign policy, especially within the global war on terror context. Significantly, she believes that despite the recent regime change in Washington, Pakistan remains immensely vulnerable in the face of the world?s largest military machine. And this really sums up the reason behind Ms Adams? visit.Viewing fiction as the best means of engaging the reader?s imagination ? while continuously re...

Writing like this won't get you a Pulitzer, but it will make someone feel b
2008-06-06 16:20:00 It's actually very easy for me to write the stories you find here on AfterDark. I'm a pretty creative guy and I have lots of ideas and manage to keep the words coming pretty well. I'm lucky that way; I rarely suffer from writers' block... with these stories, at least. In other arenas, I don't fare so well. One of the hardest things for me to write, in fact, are sympathy cards. I never know what to say, or how much to say, or how to say it. It's a lot easier to write about people getting their arms ripped off by vampires than it is to tell someone just how sorry you are that they've suffered a loss. But I have to send sympathy cards from time to time, and I've learned a couple of secrets. First, don't worry so much about how you're expressing your feelings. The important thing is that the person receiving the card knows that you care about them and are sharing their sorrow. So don't try to make it poetic or formal or inspirational. Just say what you feel. A simple "I'm very...

I understand that he’s one fellow who uses the internet quite extensively to do his job better. And look where it got him? Winning under the Breaking News Reporting Category, Jose Antonio Vargas was part of the Washington Post Staff who did a “multi-faceted coverage of the deadly shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, telling the developing story in print and online”. Bob Dylan Wins Honorary Pulitzer Prize
2008-04-08 01:44:00 For the first time in its long history, a Pulitzer Prize has been awarded to an artist from the lexicons of rock/popular music. Bob Dylan received an honorary award for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power."In the past, the Pulitzers have concentrated on classical music or, more recently, jazz. Never has an artist from the ranks of mainstream popular music been so awarded. In fact, Dylan's is a special citation with the actual Pulitzer Prize for music being given to the classical piece The Little Match Girl Passion by David Lang.Still, even Lang was awed by the award for Dylan. "Bob Dylan is the most frequently played artist in my household so the idea that I am honored at the same time as Bob Dylan, that is humbling."Past honorary citations have gone to Theodor Seuss Giesel (Dr. Seuss), Ray Bradbury, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane.

Lily Pulitzer?s ?Colour in Bloom? ballet flats
2008-03-07 13:52:00 Lily Pulitzer's 'Colour in Bloom' ballet flats No one could accuse Lily Pulitzer of ignoring the summer's trend for bright colours, would they? While many people would shy away from the idea of putting bright pink with bright green, Lily has cheerfully thrown them together on this 'Colour in Bloom' flat, which also comes in an equally blinding pink and yellow, and a rather more toned down white and pink. They're $261, and if you dare to wear them, will be the only item you'll need to bring your wardrobe right up to date as far as colour is concerned.

SimJournalist: Can a Game Teach You How to Win a Pulitzer? - SendMeRSS
2008-02-19 23:34:00 SimJournalist: Can a Game Teach You How to Win a Pulitzer? I bumped into Brian Crecente, the managing editor of Kotaku, on the way to a demo of a game that neither of us had seen before. He seemed a bit apprehensive and out of sorts. Understandable, since he was the star of this game. The demo was part of a panel at the Serious Games Summit, a segment of the Game Developers Conference dedicated to titles that are intended to be educational, build understanding and support for causes, etc. Some university researchers were presenting a Neverwinter Nights mod they had created that was supposed to teach students about the media. In a stroke of genius, they called their panel Being Brian Crecente: Using an Off-The-Shelf Role Playing Game to Teach Journalism. It was brilliant because Crecente isn't just a game blogger: he got his start in journalism as reporter on the crime beat at the Denver Post. (It was also a brilliant move for the academics to name the panel after Crecente b...
