This Morning on Flashpoint: A Rorschach test on a pulpit
2008-03-30 16:32:00
Some look at Barack Obama's former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright and see a truth-telling father figure. Others see a race baiting paranoid. What explains the difference?  That's what we try to explore this morning on Flashpoint.  Local Pastor, Arthur Jones Jr. of the Carrolwood Bible Based Fellowship Church is my guest, but if you think he's going to reject those fiery snippets of Wright's seen on YouTube, you'll be disapppointed.  Let me know what you think, Brendan

No gimmicks (though some props like gold dust might be useful)! When ?Pastors? abuse the pulpit
2008-03-21 20:20:00
The controversy surrounding Barack Obama’s pastor Jeremiah Wright brings to mind several questions:    1 - How can a “pastor” preach partisan politics from the pulpit without prompting the IRS to strip his church of its tax exempt status?    2 - How can a “pastor” stand in the pulpit and repeatedly take the Lord’s name in vain during a ...

Kentucky?s Bully Pulpit

Keep those young Kentucky fingers crossed, boys and girls! The freaks, geeks and fuglies may wish to cross their toes as well, for good measure. HECKLED FROM THE PULPIT
2008-01-18 14:12:00
I've heard of comedians being heckled, but never a preacher. It was this past Sunday that I knew immediately during the evening sermon I'd said the wrong word. I made the statement, “If you don’t drink enough water you’ll get hypothermia.” As a preacher and a paramedic I immediately knew it was wrong. I meant to use the word “dehydrated,” but for some reason it came out “hypothermia.” Instead of correcting it (which I should have done immediately) I decided to just continue preaching, because I was in the process of making a point, and I knew if I stopped everyone would lose the point I was trying to make. Besides I didn’t think anyone would really catch what I said anyway. To make a long story short, let me just say, I never expected to be heckled from the pulpit after the closing prayer. Following the “amen” the good brother who lead the prayer said, “I didn't mention it in my prayer, but you know something else I’m thankful for? I’m thankful that wh...

Mike Huckabee: Playing Both Sides of the Pulpit
2007-12-18 17:43:00
motherjones.com: At the last Republican presidential debate, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who had surged into the lead in the Iowa polls, pitched himself as the potential president who could unite a nation divided. “I think the first priority of the next president is to be a president of all the United States,” he said. “We are right now a very polarized country, and that polarized country has led to a paralyzed government. We’ve got Democrats who fight Republicans, liberals fighting conservatives, the left fights the right. Who’s fighting for this country again?…We’ve got to be the united people of the United States.” In the days before this debate, Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, was hit with questions regarding his past remarks and positions on religion (in 1998 he said, “I hope we…take this nation back for Christ”), on AIDS (in 1992 he proposed that people with the disease be quarantined), and o...
Peggy Noonan: The Pulpit and the Potemkin Village
2007-12-14 15:49:00
Opinion Journal article link The Pulpit and the Potemkin Village Would Reagan survive in today's GOP? And is Mrs. Clinton in for a fall this winter? Friday, December 14, 2007 12:01 a.m. EST What is happening in Iowa is no longer boring but big, and may prove huge. The Republican race looks--at the moment--to be determined primarily by one thing, the question of religious faith. In my lifetime faith has been a significant issue in presidential politics, but not the sole determinative one. Is that changing? If it is, it is not progress.Mike Huckabee is in the lead due, it appears, to voter approval of the depth and sincerity of his religious beliefs as lived out in his ministry as an ordained Southern Baptist. He flashes "Christian leader" over his picture in commercials; he asserts his faith is "mainstream"; his surrogates speak of Mormonism as "strange" and "definitely a factor." Mr. Huckabee said this summer that a candidate's faith is &quo...
Bills/Patriots: Pats Pulpit's Take
2007-11-16 13:14:00
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's New England Patriots blog It must be pretty difficult to talk about an undefeated, nationally praised NFL team, right? Tommasse from Pats Pulpit has graciously stopped by this morning to do just that: I asked him five questions about his Patriots as they pertain to the season to date and this Sunday's game, and he provided us with some interesting responses. As always, be sure to check out Pats Pulpit later on today to see my reciprocating interview. To the questions (they're in bold)! Bill Belichick has always been a coach who knows how to prioritize - it's apparent in his building of the roster and his game-planning. Where then, on Belichick's list of priorities, do you believe going 19-0 lies? PP: I think it's now on the list, but I don't think it's very high yet. While the rest of the world started wondering after Week 3, I'm pretty sure Belichick has been employing his usual week-to-week, one-game-at-a-time mentality. After the Ind...
Bills/Patriots: Pats Pulpit's Take
2007-09-21 14:23:00
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's New England Patriots blog Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Patriots fan? The thought disgusts me; the vision of cheering a Tom Brady touchdown throw gives me stomach pain the likes of appendicitis has never seen. But boy - I sure wouldn't mind the winning, even if it had recently been tarnished by a cheating scandal. Let's be honest - it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be a Pats fan. A Dolphin fan, on the other hand... We don't have to imagine being a Pats fan today (you're welcome), because Tommasse of Pats Pulpit is here to give us his take on the Pats. It's like viewing the thoughts of a Pats fan without the appendicitis, or something. Here's his take on his team and the game this weekend (my questions in bold): I'll only bring this up once - Spygate. We know where you stand. Were you surprised at all with how well the Patriots played after the consequences were handed out, or was this just another aced tes...

Book Review: The Making of a Preacher: Naked in the Pulpit
2007-08-21 02:34:00
C. Mark Ealy’s The Making of a Preacher: Naked in the Pulpit isn’t so much a misguided memoir as it is simply a memoir that never really falls into stride. Overly didactic and repetitive, Naked in the Pulpit will appeal only to a limited audience. Centering around a character named Larry, whom readers will undoubtedly ...

Something that I also do, that only golds can do, is send out a weekly bully pulpit letter about all my portals with clickable links. I send this out to all my captured leads, hoping that they find one they like and sign up, becoming a premium lead that I can call. I also send out a similar letter to my premium leads that mentions all the portals, but mostly focuses on the silver system. This encourages affiliate sign ups.I get giddy just thinking about the quality of mlm leads that these letters generate for my network marketing business. Give it a try and see if it works for you.______________________David- Pearson1-801-281-0571Leads That Recognize Your Name - Click Here

Holy War Fistfight In Church Pulpit
2007-06-06 15:33:00
Bhisho, SOUTH AFRICA — A  struggle over the leadership of a Bhisho congregation turned ugly at the weekend when a brawl broke out at the pulpit. Tension began mounting in the International Assemblies of God?s Bhisho congregation after the senior pastor, and the church?s provincial leader, Zolile John Batala, died last year. Since then Batala?s son, Jabu, ...
No preachers, no pulpits: Believers trade church houses for house churches
2007-05-05 13:07:00
In an era when arena-sized churches seem all the rage, there's another, quieter movement afoot. House churches are springing up around the world, across the country and even in Colorado Springs, a place where megachurches seem to grow like kudzu.

The Empty Bully Pulpit
2007-04-13 16:37:00
Don Imus was fired by CBS yesterday, 8 days after he called the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy headed hos" on his show and his producer responded by calling the Tennessee women's basketball team "the Jigaboos". I'd like to congratulate Les Moonves of CBS for "doing the right thing" but by yesterday the firing had become an inevitability and there really wasn't anything courageous in Moonves' decision. Imus had already lost a slew of sponsors as well as his simulcasting contract with MSNBC and had a long list of regular guests publicly announce they would never appear on his show again. Imus was even drawing fire from presidential candidates, with Barack Obama joining the chorus of those calling for Imus to be fired. In my view, the Bush Administration missed a real opportunity to act as "uniters, not dividers" during the past week. A few years ago the admnistration decided to use the FCC to regulate offensive speech and images on the airwaves, making a public splas...
Jerusalem?s Al-Aqsa mosque gets new Saladin pulpit
2007-02-03 06:07:01
JERUSALEM - A replica of a wooden pulpit given to Al-Aqsa by Saladin after his 1187 conquest of Jerusalem has been installed in the mosque, almost four decades after the original was destroyed in a fire, a reporter said Wednesday. The pulpit was transported overnight Tuesday from Jordan, where it was constructed over a period of four years. It was transported under security, with several streets around the Old City of Jerusalem closed and a helicopter hovering overhead, Israeli police said. “The burnt pulpit was destroyed into pieces,” said Adnan Husseini, a senior official in the Waqf, which oversees Muslim religious sites. “The new one was constructed on the model of the original. Once the plans were drawn up, it took four years to construct it,” Husseini said. The cost of the new pulpit stood at 1.5 million dollars (1.15 million euros), donated by Jordan’s King Abdullah II, said Luay Dabbur, a deputy dean at Jordan’s Balqa Applied Sciences Un...

THE PREACHER IN THE PULPIT
2006-12-02 16:04:06
He was born and bred in a small town on the outskirts of South Africa, in the Bushman-land where summer turns life into a living hell and winter freezes it in its totality. Cruel land of extremes???. War broke out during his last year of school and before long, he found himself crossing the blue African skies as a fighter pilot. Sharing a bungalow with 29 RAFs, English became like a mother tongue. He met his wife during the war. An Irish girl with long, pitch-black hair and eyes that reminded him of the blue skies where he served his country. It was love at first sight and they got married while the war was still on. At first her non church-going Catholic parents merely tolerated their new son-in-law who was to be a preacher in a Protestant domination, and his staunch Afrikaner parents rebelled against the new Irish-Catholic daughter-in-law. But love conquers all, and finally the families made peace and accepted each other. It was only after the w...
