Should CTA cops fine riders for putting feet, bags on seats?
2012-01-26 18:05:00 The CTA has plenty of rules regarding rider behavior on CTA property. But as far as I can tell, there’s no explicit, fineable prohibition for putting your feet or your bags on the seat next to you. But there is in New York City. Last year, New York cops issued tickets to 7,373 riders for... Read more »
I?m Putting $6,000 into this Recent IPO
2012-01-26 02:00:00 Investing in any recent initial public offering (IPO) carries one obvious risk: You may be buying as insiders and underwriters are getting set to sell. By federal law, these folks are "locked up," prevented from selling stock for 180 days after the IPO. When they can finally turn their pre-IPO stock into cash, they rarely hesitate. So as soon as Zipcar's (NYSE: ZIP) backers and founders could sell shares in mid-October, they didn't hesitate, unloading more than 3 million shares by year's end. As a result, an IPO that closed at $28 on its first day of trading last spring now trades below $15. That's a fresh opportunity for the rest of us, as Zipcar . . . → Read More: I’m Putting $6,000 into this Recent IPO

Harmonics - Putting The Record Straight
2012-01-23 05:09:00 Over the years, Wireless Waffle has tried to explain and demystify many of the more esoteric technical terms and concepts used in the wireless world such as OFDM, intermodulation and even interpreting ionograms. There is one very straightforward technical concept that is so often misused that it's time the record is set straight. That concept is harmonics.Harmonics should be the easiest concept to understand. Passing any radio (or for that matter audio) signal through anything that is not perfectly linear (and the only things that are perfectly linear are pieces of wire) will produce differing degrees of harmonics. The non-linear device will produce other things as well (such as the aforementioned intermodulation) but harmonics are probably the number one resultant. A harmonic is simply a copy of the original signal but with it's frequency multiplied by an integer. The second harmonic is therefore the original signal but with all it's frequencies doubled. The seco...

Putting Newt?s response to a gay Iowan in context
2011-12-21 20:42:00 A reader alerted me to an article contending that GOP presidential candidate “Newt Gingrich told a gay man and longtime resident of Oskaloosa[, Iowa] here today that he should vote for President Obama.” According to Memeorandum, the story is generating quite the buzz in the blogosphere. Only problem is that the spin of the Democrat ...

Putting a Signature on Customer Experience
2011-12-07 19:00:00 ?To reach it?s full impact, customer experience needs to be thought of as a strategic agenda item on par with and actually integrated with corporate strategy, managing the brand, and new product development. Customer experience should not be confused with existing efforts to focus on customer service or touch-point management. These efforts are focused more on delivering tactical reengineering of customer-facing processes. As a customer experience leader, you want customers to talk with everyone they know (and don?t know) about your company, employees to live and exude the best qualities of the brand on and off the job, and to be rewarded as a market leader. If you share that vision for your customer experience efforts, here are some strategic tools and ideas to help you do that.?

Putting a Gleam in Your IRA
2011-12-02 21:57:00 By Terry Coxon, Casey Research You likely have seen invitations to open a "Gold IRA" or something with a similar name. Perhaps you should, but before you do, think about why an Individual Retirement Account might or might not be a good place to hold gold. That may tell you something about the best way to introduce gold into your IRA. Gold isn’t the only investment that raises the "Does it belong in an IRA?" question. Every investment does. And for every investment, the answer is, "It depends." It depends on the nature of the other assets in your overall portfolio. It depends on how big the IRA is compared to your total holdings. And it depends on your . . . → Read More: Putting a Gleam in Your IRA

Putting My Career (And Other People?s Money*) Where My Mouth Is?

Putting your injured child into the hands of a stranger: Our family's
2011-09-29 16:27:00 I realized last Monday my kids were not 100% safe in my care. When I watched my 5-year-old run to me with his horrifyingly broken arm, I quickly observed there was nothing I physically could do to help my child and he needed medical assistance. NOW. Frantically calling 911, I shouted over the screams of... Read more »

Putting The Jury In Charge
2011-06-06 15:14:00 The The Illinois Supreme Court is considering allowing jurors to ask questions during civil trials. If you've ever served on a jury, you know that jurors generally just watch and listen. Even though lawyers and judges try to make things clear for the jury, there can be questions and many attorneys are just bad at their job. My initial impression is that this could be a good thing. The law isn't always clear (in fact I'd say it's usually unclear), especially if you are a juror and just hearing it for the first time. The judge and attorneys are probably familiar with the law in the case, at least more familiar than someone who is not an attorney, and may...

Bears not putting a premium on cornerback?
2011-02-08 05:39:00 For those who thought the abuse Bears cornerback Tim Jennings suffered in the NFC Championship game would have the Bears looking for a shut-down corner, Brad Biggs disagrees. Biggs also claims the Bears anticipated some fall-off for Charles Tillman going into the 2010 season. The thing to keep in mind is Cover-2 based defenses don't put a high premium on the position. That's not to say cornerbacks are not valued. But it's a zone-based scheme so the Bears aren't out looking to invest in shutdown corners like Nnamdi Asomugha, who command huge salaries. Yes, cornerbacks are more important to the scheme than safeties, but the signature position in the defense is the under tackle. As we saw last year, pass rushers...

Putting God’s Purposes First
2010-11-01 14:17:00 – by Lee Ann Rubsam “To be effective at what we are here for, we must always keep obeying God first.” – Rick Joyner This quote is from a story Mr. Joyner tells about a time he obeyed God by faithfully speaking a word from the Lord which he knew would not be well received. He chose obedience over his personal comfort, fully realizing the consequences could have been the complete end of his ministry. When he did so, God blessed him in response. How many of us understand that we are here, not for our own pleasure, but for the plans of God to be worked out in the earth? How many of us are aware that even in the seemingly small decisions we make, obeying or not obeying the voice of the Lord has a ripple effect – either for good or for bad – in God’s Kingdom? “I know God told me to attend __________ Church, but this one has a better time schedule – and I like their style of worship better.” “Yes, God said I should give an offering of $___...
Putting in my Time
2010-10-26 19:49:00 Not much for tournaments lately, I kind of been busy spending time on Lake Minnetonka preparing for the Minnesota Federation Nation Tournament of Champions in early September. The lake goes off limits for me and my competitors this Friday. It really is a shame that I have not spent more time on Tonka since I have essentially lived in the Twin Cities all my life. The thing about Tonka, there is so much water and so many contours and stuff to learn. That being said, I have been spending quite a bit of time out there mainly driving around with my electronics searching for new deep water spots. The learning curve is still super steep on this lake, but I am trying to do as much homework as possible. I did manage a few nice fish on new spots this past Sunday, as well as an 18" Fatty Smallmouth that I had camera malfunction and did not capture. Not sure what I will be doing during the off limits, maybe doing some fun fishing or maybe trying film some more for "All About Bass". So ...
Modern Traditions - Putting a Contemporary Spin on Yesterday's Time-Ho
2010-10-17 15:57:00 Interior design is like fashion: it has all been done before! Clothing collections fall in and out of vogue, season after season, but they all eventually come back around - only the fabrics and details change. It's the same with furniture: a desk is a desk! The only things that change are the wood species, finish, hardware and details, such as door profiles and leg shapes. So how do we continue to develop our interiors to reflect both our modern times and the furniture we love that is not...well, our style? Is it actually possible to incorporate Grandma's traditional antique dresser into a contemporary home? Heirloom-quality furniture is often handed down from generation to generation. However, many of us find...

Putting Politics Aside, Where is the Church?
2010-06-15 20:56:00 When it comes to politics and faith I find a lot of Christians fall into one of two categories particularly when it comes to social issues: The church should care for the needs of the people (more republican leaning) or The church should influence the government to care for the needs of the people (more democrat leaning). Generally speaking, in theory, many agree that it’s a Christian thing to care for those in need, Christians just differ on how. But, then here is the crazy thing to me: both sides ...

Small business putting faith into social media — but why?
2010-05-24 12:33:00 More and more, small business owners are buying into social media, according to a May 20 report on eMarketer (see table). “[A]lmost two in five small-business owners reported they would be growing their businesses with social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. That was up from less than one-quarter who planned to up their game with social in 2009 and made social media the only tactic to increase in importance since last year.” While it’s good that social media marketing is becoming more mainstream, let me offer a bit of advice for small businesses (and any other business for that matter): Don’t neglect your Website. It’s your core online presence. But I digress. While I liked the report, what it didn’t go into is WHY? Sorry, “growing your business” is a bit vague and not a good answer. If I had to guess, I’d say that growing your business means you want to sell more. Is that really it? Ultimately it is &...

Google Tests Putting Images in its Search Advertising – is it a One O
2009-08-13 20:25:00 Google it seems is revamping the way its search ads function. The famed PPC text ads which brought text and pay per click advertising back from a near death experience is apparently looking at adding thumbnails to sponsored ads. Barry Schwartz’s blog post which links to an interesting thread in Webmasterworld forums where this was first reported. The thread creator posted this: I just did a search and the top three results under sponsored links on the right side appeared to be affiliate ads. But, instead of just the regular text ads they had an 80×80 product image and then the title text for the product. This is quite similar to the products plus option they had added (in private beta still I guess) February, which showed images under a plus box – a box which opens on clicking a plus sign – along with retail results. 2009-07-06 14:00:00 On 28th June 2009, Moseley Barcamp saw some of Birmingham’s most digitally-inclined folk assemble. But what have we learned from it? On a personal note, I learned that I maybe shouldn’t be so nervous about public speaking, as my talk on coding from scratch went better than I thought it would, from the kind comments I’ve received (thanks, kind commenters). I took some valuable professional lessons away too, and have started putting them into practice. Thanks to Tom Martin’s talk, entitled “Why your blog is slow”, I finally got round to enabling gzip compression on my site, which made the homepage 80% smaller in filesize, therefore effectively making it much quicker to load. I also shoved all my JavaScript to the bottom of my page (where possible) so as to speed up the rendering of each page. Matt Machell’s talk finally got me to sign up on the Multipack forum, where I received a lovely welcome for my trouble. I learned that Jon Bounds has b...

Currently, there are at least 40 courses being offered in departments that span these disciplines in universities and colleges in North America, the UK and New Zealand.
