He finally got that chance on Wednesday, albeit for only 10 minutes on flat ground from a distance of 60 feet the Seattle Times reported.There will be other throwing sessions needed, including several off a mound, before Putz can be activated off the disabled list. The 34 year-old southpaw had a 3.20 ERA last year, albeit with poor control. The Twins added former closer Danny Graves to their Triple A club. He's also 34. Costochondritis is inflammation where cartilage attaches to a rib — in Putz's case, his 10th rib. The inflammation was described as mild by the doctor who read Putz's MRI on Wednesday.

Putz just went down with a "ribcage injury." Hmm. They're calling it an inflammation of the cartilage in the rib cage.Mark Lowe is being snapped up left and right. He looks like a pretty crappy reliever, but a free closer is a free closer. Keep in mind he's had two arm surgeries in the last year and a half and his peripherals don't look too good.I actually don't like Lowe very much, so I'm looking for other candidates. There isn't much out there, though. The Mariners apparently went into the year assuming Putz was going to throw 120+ innings in relief.

Putz: MRI Results Show Mild Strain
2007-03-18 16:12:00 The Mariners received "great news" on Saturday after their medical director reviewed the results of an MRI taken on right-hander J.J. Putz's right elbow. The diagnosis, made in Seattle by Dr. E. Edward Khalfayan, was a "mild flexor pronator strain." There was a huge sigh of relief on the Mariners' side of the Peoria Sports Complex, although Putz had expressed confidence on Friday that there was nothing seriously wrong and that he would have plenty of time to prepare himself for the regular season, which begins on April 2 at Safeco Field against the Athletics. With two weeks remaining in Spring Training, it would seem that Putz has enough time to get ready for the regular season. Putz, 30, replaced Eddie Guardado as the Mariners' closer last May 6, and finished with 36 saves in 43 chances. He led American League relievers with 104 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings, posting a 3-1 record and 34 saves in 57 appearances following his promotion to the closer role. Source: MLB.com
