2022 Qatar World Cup Raising Issues for Both Homosexuals and Alcohol Consum
2010-12-17 19:21:00 The controversial decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup is making headlines again this week, well maybe not so much in the United States, but in the rest of the world, where they love soccer it certainly is. FIFA President Sepp Blatter publicly suggested gay fans "refrain from homosexual activity" during the tournament. Homosexual activity is illegal in Qatar. (Right, just like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said there are "no homosexuals in Iran.") Also, the summer weather, the threat of terrorism and the fact that drinking alcohol is heavily restricted could also put off football fans thinking of traveling to the tiny Gulf state. No drinking=less hooliganism, and you wonder how many fans from the UK will travel...

The future of Qatar?
2008-09-23 13:00:00 The New York times carried a fascinating article about the contradictory culture of Dubai two days ago. (You can read the article here, but you will have to sign up first (for free)).The article explores the nature of Dubai, an Islamic city where you can drink alcohol and party till night. Western freedom lives side by side by mosques open 24 hours a day. Unlike many other Islamic countries, it is a place where people can choose to enjoy the vices of the West or to follow their religion to the full without the repression that exists elsewhere.Qatar is often compared to Dubai and there are many similarities. Both are exploding with growth, although Qatar is lucky enough to fund its growth with oil revenue rather than with debt. Both are also experiencing a dramatic change in culture. There is also conflict. There are both conservative and liberal elements in the country: those who want to continue to modernise and extend freedoms to those who want it, and those who want Qatar and Qa...

Police Clearance for Qatar

This relatively new requirement was brought in about 2 1/2 years, and at the time meant no end of hassle for those already in Qatar who now required one.In our latest website article we look at how to obtain a police certificate, and what to do with it after you have got it. The piece was written in response to a question on the forum here: Required UK Documents for Qatar by Plaxis, and we have incorporated some of the information he eventually found out on the British side of things, while the British Embassy were kind enough to provide us with the information on the Qatar side of things.Qatar Visitor FriendsQatar JobsFind the best deal, compare prices and read what other travellers have to say about QatarTagspolice clearance

The National Anthem of Qatar
2008-09-18 06:00:00 This is not our first post on the Qatar National Anthem - we have the tune of the anthem, with the lyrics below - but it is not very satifying not being able to listen to the words. So we have provided movies of the anthems below. The first one is not great quality, having being downloaded from YouTube, edited, and then uploaded again (and being recompressed) but we chose it because the sound was clear. The second was recorded by us at the recent world cup qualifying match between Bahrain and Qatar. As this was a totally original movie we were able to host it on Vimeo, which often provides better quality movies than YouTube.Qatar National Anthem at the Asian GamesThe National Anthem of Qatar at the Bahrain v. The History of Qatar
2008-09-12 12:57:00 History in Qatar is not as well chronicled as it might be in some countries, with still little known of its early past, and with records sparse until the arrivals of the Europeans. Nevertheless, now is a time when the boundaries of what we do know are being pushed back, with many new archeological discoveries being made. Some of these discoveries now suggest that human life in Qatar existed some 700,000 - 800,000 years ago. Later history should be easier to piece together, but is not helped by often contradictory information from secondary sources. What is clear, though, is that Qatar was a place of haven for Christians, even after the early adoption of Islam by the then ruler of Qatar, Al Tamimi. Later on, Qatar entered a bloody period in its history, with constant battles - both on sea and on land. One particular enemy was Bahrain, and indeed the enmity between these two countries was only finally solved in 2001 after a judgement by the World Court in 2001. The court case, which h...

Turning the Desert Green in Qatar
2008-09-09 14:32:00 The Supreme Qatar Desert Development Council (SQDDC) has released its plans for the development of the desert, according to a report in the Qatar Times today. The SQDDC plans call for a greening of the desert which will, in time, return the desert to a much more hospitable environment. Qatar, like much of the Middle East, was once thought to have been a much greener place than it is now, and recent finds of hunting tools designed to kill animals such as aurochs and elephants have lent weight to this theory. The development of the desert, said Dr Lotfi Al Baloushi, head of the SQDDC, will also involve the building of a new urban area, which will be called Desert City. Virtual images have been released by SQDDC of what the Qatar desert will look like by 2010 - including one where a larger than life Qatari strides across grass with the giant sand dunes at Messaieed (now covered in a verdant green) in the distance. However, one United Nations desert scientist who we contacted, Icelander...

Early Man in Qatar
2008-09-07 15:51:00 Further archeological discoveries made in Qatar by a joint Qatari-Danish team suggest that man first moved to Qatar earlier than previously expected, the Gulf Times reported today. Hunting tools have been discovered which are believed to date from 700,000 to 800,000 years in the past. The tools, which were found on what is thought to have been the shores of a freshwater lake, included hand axes and cleavers used to kill large animals such as aurochs and elephants, as well as scraping instruments used to clean fur. A director of the Moesgard Museum in Denmark, Bo Madsen, quoted in the Gulf Times stated:?not only are these tools the oldest traces of man in South Arabia, they are among the oldest in the whole world.?The announcement follows on from the discovery of an ancient settlement in Qatar earlier this year. It must also lend weight to the theory that Qatar, as well as much of the rest of the Middle East, was once a much more hospitable place to live, with a milder climate and ve...

High Speed Trains for Qatar
2008-09-06 13:18:00 Plans for trains in Qatar are going ahead at full speed, according to Railway Gazette. Some expats have been sceptical of the trains programme proceeding, especially after the end of the Asian Games. Indeed some plans do never seem to take place - an obvious one being the new National Library, which was marked on the map when I arrived here three years and a half years ago but has yet to be built. However, Qatar has now chartered Deustche Bahn for the preliminary stages of developing the railway i.e. planning. Plans include a railway link into Doha from the airport, an East coast rail link to Ras Laffan and Messaieed, a link to Saudi Arabia, "people movers" in some areas of Doha such as Lusail and possibly even a high speed link to Bahrain.I don't know how many times people have said that Qatar really needs to develop its public transport system. Now it seems that they are really going to do it. Unfortunately, there are likely to be many years of worsening traffic congestion before ...

Working in Qatar: Check out the company first!
2008-09-02 20:08:00 The Indian Embassy in Qatar has urged workers to check out companies'credentials before accepting positions in Qatar. According to Sindh Today, the advice followed a case in which a hundred recently recruited Indian employees had to return home after a company lost the contract for which they had been recruited. Not only did they return empty handed - the majority of them had paid Rs.50,000 to Rs.60,000 to a recruiting agent in India to get the positions in the first place. The newspaper went on to quote Sanjiv Kohli, minister at the Indian embassy, as saying:This is not the first or the last case in which people are cheated by recruitment agencies. In our article on jobs, Getting a job in Qatar, we advise workers to avoid small and recently set up companies where possible. You are less likely to get problems with a large well established company or with a government position. While this may not also be possible, you should also research your company as far as is possible. In additi...

The Saudhouse
2008-07-09 07:55:00 Updated July 12:Are the Saudis behind Muslim terror most everywhere, or does it just seem like it?After all, 80% of Al Qaeda were Saudis several years ago. What's the figure now? We know that Zarqawi's Iraqi Al Qaeda was full of men from the Gulf, not necessarily Saudi Arabia, but Arabia nonetheless. Fallujah was full of these guys in 2004 during the two horrible US invasions of the town. And support for Al Qaeda is high in the Kingdom. A good 50% of the population supported bin Laden a few years back. The Al Qaeda unit inside Saudi Arabia, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, had vast support and was able to penetrate into the deepest recesses of the Saudi security forces during its operations. This is how it raided embassies. There were also times during the worst of the AQAP operations that the Saudi security forces just let AQAP escape from their very hands. This was due to huge support for AQAP inside the Saudi security forces themselves. What's happened since? With the death of...

Exciting time for Qatar Football
2008-06-08 12:24:00 This is an exciting time for Qatar Football. Not only have Qatar just beaten China 1-0 with a penalty at half time during their away game, the country is also now joint first with Australia after Australia's shock defeat at the hand's of Qatar. The upcoming Saturday game against Australia will prove interesting, although the heat is likely to preclude dramatic play from either of the two sides. Check out the discussion on the I love Qatar forum.More could be coming, according to an article in the Guardian entitled Qatar plans Shock Bid for 2018 Tournament, which suggest that Qatar is likely to apply for the Games. However, Qatar is likely to be cautious this time around after being rejected from the Olympic Games bid despite tying joint third with Chicago on technical points. (Rio de Janeiro, which was behind on points, was accepted in this preliminary round.)The move could see them in direct opposition with the UAE, which has also been discussing bidding for the 2018 world cup.Qa...

Why did Qatar lose the Olympics?
2008-06-06 10:05:00 I was a little surprised that Qatar fell out of the Olympics at the first hurdle. I didn't expect them to get the 2016 Olympics on their first attempt, but I did think they'd get further than they have. Then today the Gulf Times had a front page article on the bid, entitled "IOC bends own rules to kill Doha bid."The article pointed out that on technical points Doha finished ahead of Rio, yet the IOC chose to bump Doha out rather than Rio. Perhaps more interestingly, though, is that the IOC seems to have ruled Doha based on the choice of dates.Apparently, the IOC prefers the games to be held between July 15th and August 31st to maximize television revenues. However, as the Gulf Times pointed out, this would rule the whole of this region out forever.Certainly choosing a country based on the amount of TV revenue is a long way from the Olympic ideals which the games are supposed to be based on, although a lot closer to everyday reality! However, Australia were allowed to hold the Games ...

Qatar Football: Too hot to play...
2008-06-03 22:57:00 There have been several reports of the Qatar-China match but what most seemed to have missed was just how hot it was. Even the spectators were soaked through with sweat, so it must have been awful for the players, even though they were gulping down fluids at every opportunity. Obviously the Chinese players' special water cooled vests had less effect than they had anticipated, as they seemed the more lackluster of the two teams. There is little chance of playing good football in this weather - and when Qatar play Australia it will be even hotter...Also see: Qatar SoccerQatar Visitor FriendsQatar JobsFind the best deal, compare prices and read what other travellers have to say about QatarTagsfootball

Qatar Football: Qatar meets China
2008-06-02 12:20:00 Qatar meets China tonight at the Al Sadd stadium in the Group one qualifying stage of the world cup at 7 pm tonight. Qataris I have spoken too are quietly confident that the heat, which reached 44 degrees in the day yesterday and is still cloying at night, will prove too much for the China players. China thinks differently, as they have been training in heat, and their players will be equipped with special water cooled vests. China state they are more worried about Qatar's naturalised players, especially Sebastian Quintana, who originates from Uruguay.Qatar and Qataris are very keen on football, and is currently nurturing talent at its world class sporting academy, Aspire. Friends working there have told me that the centre only employs staff who are at the very top of their profession, and its scouts travel widely to choose the best promising talent from thousands of applicants in Africa and, more recently, Vietnam.I expected my Qatari friend, who is a keen football supporter, to b...

Qatar Newspapers: Which is the best?
2008-05-31 21:16:00 I have subscribed to the Gulf Times for some time, and I chose it because, although I often prefer the Peninsula?s style of writing (which is a bit more spiky), I have generally found that the Gulf Times has better coverage of Qatar stories. However recently I have noticed Qatar stories popping up in the Peninsula (through my Google alerts for Qatar, which pick up stories from both newspapers) which I haven?t noticed in the Gulf Times. I also have friends who prefer the new paper on the block, The Qatar Tribune, citing its coverage of international issues. It seemed like a good time for a comparison, so on Friday I purchased and read all three newspapers.I started on the front page, and quickly noticed that both the Tribune and the Peninsula carried the story of the Kahramaa?s network expansion plans. With a planned QAR 10.2 billion of contracts, this could be considered important, from a financial view at least. However, the Gulf Times relegated to this the third page, replacing it ...

Qatar Jobs: Qatarisation
2008-05-28 09:20:00 Qatarisation (or Qatarization if you are American) is Qatar's attempt to increase the proportion of Qataris employed in a country where most work is still done by expatriates. Obviously, in a country where Qataris themselves number less than 15% of the population, this can only go so far. What's more, the population is increasing at an incredible rate - when I arrived here three years ago the population was estimated at less than 800,000. Today it is thought to number nearly twice that. With targets for Qatarisation formed in terms of percentage, that makes achieving the target even more difficult.Nevertheless, the targets are ambitious - according to the Financial Times Qatar is aiming for a total of 50% Qatarisation in non-specialised government posts and 20% in private sector posts. Qatar has been trying to accelerate the process of Qatarization by assigning quotas of Qatari employees to private companies and to ministries. While private companies often find themselves struggling...

My Japanese friends will be overjoyed - they were already excited to hear that the new Carrefour, based in Landmark, had a sushi section.Sadly, members of our forum report that the Korean restaurant Moon Palace in Al Nasser street, which served excellent sushi, has been closed down by the Ministry of Health. This seems to happen to half the establishments in Doha at some time or other so hopefully they will be open again soon. Qatar and Lebanon
2008-05-20 00:40:00 According to The Interpreter, Qatar is punching above its weight again in regard to Lebanon. After the recent strife in Lebanon which raised fears of a return to civil war Qatar moved rapidly to host talks between the different factions, and the different factions are now attempting to talk it out in Doha.Qatar is an ideal host for the talks. In addition to the fact that many Lebanese live and work in the country, Qatar strives to be a friend to everyone and an enemy to no-one. Sometimes this can be difficult: maintaining relationships with Israel, America and Iran at the same time is no easy matter. What's more, despite major Qatar investment (to the tune of $12 billion over the next five years) Syria, which is deeply involved in Lebanese politics, may not always have been so very friendly back, at least according to the Counter Terrorism blog.Nevertheless, Qatar is admirably ploughing on, although Lebanon' s quagmire politics must be a challenge for its geniality.
