NCLB is just another quagmire for this administration.
2008-03-15 22:20:00 In EdWeek (3/5/08) in an article by David Hoff, ?A Key Republican Sees Odds Dipping For NCLB Renewal,? Representative Howard P. ?Buck? McKeon (formerly mentioned in this blog in March ?07) bemoans the fact that it has been a bit tough to push the reauthorization of NCLB down the throats of other lawmakers.According to Buck, ?We?re in a climate where it doesn?t look very favorable to get the reauthorization done.?Of course, it would help if the members of Congress actually made an effort to do something about NCLB. Hoff mentions in his article that Buck (who is the senior Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee) has not even met with Representative George Miller from California who is the committee?s chairperson to discuss anything about NCLB since October! It?s now March!Hoff reports that Miller claimed to have a goal of this spring to reauthorize the law! As of this posting, spring is in one week and ?the House education committee hasn?t taken any public action toward ...
Reader Mail: Keeper-league quagmire
2008-02-29 13:00:00 Alex writes:Love, love, love your blog ... awesome info and refreshing writing style! I was hoping to get your quick opinion about a keeper question I am struggling with. I just joined a keeper league, inherited a team ... league as follows: 12-team - 5x5 - 14 batters (2 catchers), 9 pitchers, 2 bench, 3 DL - $265 cap - Auction draft - 7 keepers. So looking at my inherited team, I'm comfortable with the following 5 keepers:Wright at $30Kinsler at $16 (a bit borderline on this one - but since 2nd is shallow, I kind of have no choice)Byrnes at $11 (not a Byrnes fan, but at $11 I am)Bedard at $16Hamels at $11I'm just about to call it quits on the keepers - only keeping 5 and spending the rest at the draft. Wondering if you felt any of the below are worth keeping at their particular salaries:Saltalamacchia at $8 (projections are all over the place for this kid - 2 catcher league makes me think I should keep him - but at $8??? can I get him back for cheaper in the draft??? argh!!)Oliver...

V/A-Quagmire Volume 1: Sixties Punk Mysteries From the USA
2007-11-30 04:15:00 Still on my 60s kick, I apologize to any of you with musical tastes so narrow you might not be into it. Every once in a while, I'll completely stop listening to the 70s punk, hardcore, Oi, or whatever else heavy sub-genres of punk I'm usually spinning, and get back into the old stuff. It's like a musical enema and we all need them from time to time. As mentioned as a comment in the last post, there are dozens of compilations documenting 60s punk, garage, and psych. The world-famous Nuggets is easily the go-to for people getting into the rougher songs of the genres, and while it has some great songs, it includes quite a few misplaced duds, and barely scratches the surface of all the great singles that came out in the 60s. The 60s were a decade dominated by singles as opposed to LPs, both in the mainstream and the underground (and some damn good music charted on the Top 40 during those 10 years), and indies were starting to flex their muscle in regional scenes, exposing hundreds of...

As In The SCHIP Quagmire, No One Wants The DREAM Act Either
2007-10-25 09:34:00 No matter the jargon and unhanded under and over tones of the socialists in the United States, no one wants the DREAM Act, either. The vast majority WANT SCHIP when it is FIXED. It is for CHILDREN and NOT adults. Get over it. There has a been a wealth of articles written and posted everywhere but the bloggers on the right post ALL of the facts and not cherry picked pieces/parts designed to overwhelm the emotionally weak.IBD has a poll result in regards to the DREAM Act that went down in flames...AGAIN...yesterday. The poll shows an "Across-The-Board Opposition To DREAM Act's Tuition Break. The so-called DREAM Act, standing for "Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors" and giving children of illegal immigrants a path toward legality, failed a crucial test vote in the Senate Wednesday. Supporters needed 60 votes to advance it, and they got only 52. The measure would have allowed illegal immigrants who plan to attend college or join the military, and who came to the U.S. ...
AQ's Quagmire
2007-10-11 05:13:00 I found this article over at The Victory Caucus and it is a relatively condensed expose on the successes of the American Fighting Men and Women as well as the successes of the Iraqi Military units trained by American Forces. Below is an excerpt from The Captain's Journal....Finally, al Qaeda in Iraq has lost a significant foreign fighter facilitator in Syria. Unknown gunmen murdered Muhammad Gul Aghasi - one of the key ?theologians? of al Qaeda - at a mosque in northern Syria last month. Candidates for the fiery preacher?s killing include rivals within his own radical group, agents of the Americans - and his Syrian hosts. Whatever the truth, this is bad news for the already ailing al Qaeda. By 2006, Aghasi claimed that his group had dispatched more than 2,000 jihadists from half-a-dozen Arab countries to Iraq and also boasted of providing jihadists in Iraq with safe havens inside Syria where they could rest, get medical care (even dental work!), retrain and even get married be...
One More Solution To That Life Insurance Trust Quagmire!!

Iraq Quagmire Planned in 1994
2007-08-26 07:13:00 In 1994, Emperor Cheney elucidated so clearly why overthrowing Saddam was a dodgy proposition. At that time,Cheney said that 140 American deaths was too high a price to overthrow Iraq. How about 3,700. Halliburton must have been a bit short on backlog. We should all be so thankful. The world is a safer place. All praise to Emperor Cheney.
How Did You Ever Get Us Involved In Another Quagmire?’
2007-08-23 23:05:00 by- Suzie-Q @ 2:05 PM MST ‘Well, if you’ve learned so much from history, Mr. President, how did you ever get us involved in another quagmire?’ In his speech at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention Wednesday, President Bush surprised many people by invoking the example of Vietnam in arguing against a withdrawal from Iraq. CNN invited David Gergen, who served as an advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton, to comment on that aspect of Bush’s speech. “He may well have stirred up a hornet’s nest among historians,” Gergen stated. “By invoking Vietnam, he raised the automatic question, ‘Well, if you’ve learned so much from history, Mr. President, how did you ever get us involved in another quagmire?’ … It’s surprising to me that he would go back to that, and I think he’s going to get a lot of criticism.” “This is not a man who’s talking about compromise,” Gergen ...

Is it a quagmire yet?
2007-08-22 20:07:00 After years of saying the occupation of Iraq was nothing like Vietnam, suddenly it is.Bush to cite Vietnam in defense of Iraq KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Critics of the war in Iraq who compare the conflict to Vietnam have the analogy backward, President Bush plans to tell veterans in a speech today. In what the White House is billing as a major foreign policy address, the president will say that the lessons of Vietnam teach that the U.S. should stay in Iraq, not withdraw. Terrorists cite Vietnam to predict that the United States will run from the Iraq war, he will say."Here at home, some can argue our withdrawal from Vietnam carried no price to American credibility -- but the terrorists see things differently," Bush plans to tell a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, according to speech excerpts released late Tuesday by the White House.Bush will argue that the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam had dire consequences for the people in that region and so would a withdrawal from Iraq."Three decades l...

Captain America in Marvel Knights quagmire again?
2007-08-20 18:59:00 What's this here? David Morrell, the author who'd created Rambo, is writing some kind of miniseries about Captain America ("The Chosen") as seen through the eyes of a soldier in Afghanistan, and which, yes, does appear to be just a flashback story. But there's at least two reasons to keep expectations on this to minimum: one, because Morrell may be chummy with Max Allan Collins, who if memory serves, supported the anti-American steps taken with Cap a few years ago by writing an introduction to the trade paperback of the Marvel Knights series at the time in which he attacked "jingoism". And two, because this miniseries, just like the Marvel Knights series, seems to put Cap into real life settings in ways that could trivialize the tragedies in real life:Another unique element of Morrell's Captain America story is the story's setting. "My story could have happened anytime after 9-11 because there are a lot of references to 9-11," Morrell said. "There are pictures of the Cole after...

Cheney Predicted a Quagmire in Baghdad
2007-08-14 15:42:00 Vice President Dick Cheney is a staunch defender of the U.S. invasion of Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein, but a 1994 video shows he opposed that very move after the liberation of Kuwait, saying it would land America in a "quagmire.” In an April 15, 1994 interview Cheney said he did not think U.S. or U.N. forces should have moved into Baghdad in 1991, stating, "Because if we'd gone to Baghdad we would have been all alone. There wouldn't have been anybody else with us. There would have been a U.S. occupation of Iraq. None of the Arab forces that were willing to fight with us in Kuwait were willing to invade Iraq. Once you got to Iraq and took it over, took down Saddam Hussein's government, then what are you going to put in its place? "That's a very volatile part of the world, and if you take down the central government of Iraq, you could very easily end up seeing pieces of Iraq fly off: part of it, the Syrians would like to have to the west, part of i...

Reports from the quagmire
2007-07-31 18:31:00 Glenn Greenwald does a really good job of taking the MSM to task for it's treatment of Ken Pollack and Michael O'Hanlon's OP-ED in the NYT yesterday. It is difficult to remember a media spectacle to match yesterday's grand pagent where Ken Pollack and Michael O'Hanlon were paraded across virtually every network and cable news show and radio program and heralded as "war opponents" and "Bush critics" who nonetheless returned from Iraq and were forced by The Truth to admit that we are Winning. For sheer deceit and propaganda, it is difficult to remember something quite this audacious and transparently false.Meanwhile Condi Rice and Robert Gates apparently struck out in attempts to get Iraq's Sunni neighbors to support the Shia government.Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has called for a US pull out from Iraq.MANILA, Philippines -- Southeast Asian nations on Monday called on the United States and other nations to pull their forces out of Ira...

Housing Counsel: The Quagmire Called Square Footage in Ann Arbor

Question: We are under contract to purchase a downtown condominium unit. This is a resale situation. The seller’s real estate agent has represented the unit to contain 860 square feet. However, when my wife and I physically measured the apartment, we can only come up with 830 square feet. Is there a formal method of making these measurements? Obviously, we do not want to pay for more than we are actually getting. Answer: There is an old expression that when there are two lawyers, there will be three opinions. In real estate, when you are trying to analyze square footage, you may actually get four or five opinions. Measuring square footage has become a hotly debated topic to which there is no real answer. Although there are industry standards when measuring single family hous...

BU Survey The Political Quagmire In St.Lucia~So Who Is The Carton Of Expire
2007-06-17 06:04:00 For many St Lucians, what was most remarkable about our 83-year-old prime minister’s first budget address since taking office last December was that he had managed to stay on his feet for the full four hours of its delivery. Indeed, not a few still hold on to the view that the Herculean effort had contributed more to Sir John’s current state of health than had his widely reported contretemps with his Cabinet colleagues over St Lucia’s relationship with China. On the ?Chimera Quagmire?
2007-01-11 04:51:01 Last week’s issue of Nature included an editorial on “avoiding the chimera quagmire, focusing on the question: Researchers need to take the initiative in addressing a controversial and urgent ethical issue: under what circumstances should the fusion of cells of animals and humans be permitted? Certainly the primary research organizations that guide scientific research must set guidelines to the ethical limits of what research is conducted - and at least here in the States, the National Academies of Science has a strong tradition in doing so. The need for ethics regulations must be tempered, however, by minimizing limits on intellectual curiousity. As few limits on what research is permissible should ideally be placed on the scientists as possible, so long as there is a rigorous funding review process, justifying such research. That said, on to the research in question… (more…)

President Bush pushes blame for Iraq quagmire onto the troop
2007-01-05 13:24:01 Let’s get one thing straight: Generals are “troops”. If you support the troops, you support the Generals also. They ALL take their orders from “The Decider”, and the BUCK stops with “The Decider”; have no doubt about it. But, does the Commander-In-Chief REALLY support the troops? He says he does at every available opportunity, but due to the tremendous heat bearing down upon him from both sides of the aisle and The Press lately, President Bush is apparently going to cave in and fire all of his top troops in his latest “smoke and mirrors” effort to portray his “Stay the Course Plan” in Iraq as some sort of a new “strategerie”. How is he going to do this? By trying to make it APPEAR as if this whole neocon exportation of Western democracy into the Middle East would be working, if only he had better, braver, and more brilliant troops in place than the ones he has now. The only problem is, the entire...
A Quagmire In The "Culture Wars"
2006-10-27 19:33:02 I once asked awhile ago who it was who started the so-called ?culture wars,? and I never received an answer. And somehow, based on this bit of theorizing by Amy Sullivan that appeared on yesterday?s editorial page of USA Today, I don?t think I?m going to get an answer anytime soon, seeing as how it is utterly full of tripe (this is actually a companion of sorts to the hit piece by CNN?s Candy Crowley the other day).Despite my objections, I should give USA Today credit for putting this into a blog and allowing readers to post comments to the story online (would that Philadelphia?s ?newspaper of record? did the same thing). Why Democrats are losing the culture warRepublicans? edge: Seeing the problemAnd by the way, as nearly as I can determine, the ?problem? is that Democrats/liberals/progressives-/whatever don?t bend over backwards for people who will never agree with them the same way that ABC producer Mark Halperin did yesterday).By Amy SullivanOn the surface, solid majorities of Ame... |
