2008-08-11 18:05:00 A visitor to a Quaker meeting stands up after five minutes of silence and asks, "When does the service begin?" An old Friend rises after a brief reflection and says, "Service begins when the worship ends."The inner light is the shortest route to the outer darkness.- attributed to G K ChestertonIn 1729 the old church (St Mary's) fell down bodily after more than six centuries of constant use ..... when the fund raising committee paid a courtesy call on Jonathan Gurnell, a wealthy Quaker landowner, they were surprised to be told, "Thee knows, friends, that I am not in the habit of giving money to build up steeple houses, but here's a hundred ponds to help thee take away the old one." A General, a group of visionary students, the Quakers, and 30 national orga
2007-12-04 00:24:00 Lieutenant General Robert Gard (USA-ret.), Nukes on a Blog?s own Leonor Tomero, and the redoubtable researcher Achraf Farraj published an article in Friday?s Daily Californian encouraging University of California students and faculty to question the University?s involvement in the development of the so-called Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW):?The University of California manages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a facility leading the development of the so-called Reliable Replacement Warhead, the first new hydrogen bomb designed by the United States in 20 years. Students and faculty at the University of California have a unique role to play in actively questioning this misguided U.S. nuclear weapons policy and UC?s involvement in its implementation.?The authors conclude that:?There are many problems facing the United States today, but the viability of its nuclear deterrent is not one of them. Building new nuclear weapons will not make us safer. It will do nothing to deter te...

Quakers and Shakers
2007-09-13 12:09:00 We have had six earthquakes in the region today, eight in the last 24 hours… two of these could be felt from our building - the one last night at 7.40pm caused our teacher to cancel the class. I’m sure there was no harm, however I would have hated to have been the teacher standing in ...

Listening to "Way" Closing; Hearing the Call of Vocation
2007-06-28 09:10:00 Two days ago I quit my freelance writing assignment. Because I had to sign a non-disclosure statement, I can't tell you what it was. What I can say is this. I'm 57 years old. I've been a professional writer for the last 20 years. I finally realized that I will never be happy if I have to take orders from people who have less experience and expertise than me.When I was 27 years old, I was the arts and antiques editor for Architectural Digest magazine. I've written four books (Bipolar Depression Unplugged: A Survivor Speaks Out will be published soon. I'll let you know all about it). I've had magazine articles published in national magazines.I've also been the Director of Corporation and Foundation Relations for a selective liberal arts college. I've worked for KNBC news, KCET (the local PBS station), UCLA Extension, and I've had a few other jobs and careers as well.Although I've had a number of terrific jobs, I ended up feeling empty with every one--except for wri...
Parker Palmer Revisited
2007-06-28 06:30:00 First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who's been leaving comments lately. Although I try to respond to every comment, I've been swamped. So, please know that I've read what you've written and I do appreciate it. But, this time, I just can't respond except to say thank-you.For those of you who have been reading my blog for awhile, you'll remember that last month I had a series on work. One of my favorite new authors is Parker J. Palmer, author of Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation.Since I'm still new to blogging, I'm not sure if it's better to link you to my other post or to reprint it here. But since my story only makes sense if you know about Parker J. Palmer's story, I'm reprinting it now. Tomorrow's post will be my letter to Parker Palmer explaining what I learned from his experience.* * *By the time Palmer was 35 years old, he'd changed careers a few times (He dropped out of seminary school to get a Ph.D. in sociology, left academia ...
The Quaker Way (Part 3)
2007-05-29 06:39:00 An old friend who's known me for years emailed me to say that she was sure I was attracted to the Quaker Way because of the bonnets. Well, the fact is that I am a "hat" person but I had to laugh. Actually, the Quaker philosophy is new to me and is certainly something I plan to explore further--with or without a bonnet. The fact is that the more I thought about Parker J. Palmer's discussion with Friend elder Ruth, the more interesting I found it. What if...the bipolar "limitation" isn't a limitation at all but rather a potential?Marja from Roller Coaster and I probably agree on this (see her comment from my earlier post). What I mean is that for years I was proud of myself for persevering despite adversity. And I believe that one of the main reasons I felt this illness was an adversity--in addition to the psychic pain of the depressions--was because of its stigma. But what if being bipolar truly isn't a bad thing? What if God chooses us for this illness because we're more sen... |
