2009-10-29 11:10:00
Qualcomm, the US-based mobile chip-maker announced in November that they were working on a low-cost PC, codenamed ‘Kayak‘. A ‘Kayak’ for all those who don’t know is a small, sleek and fast boat used by American Indians (Red Indians). And India might be the testing ground. The computer will be priced under Rs. 10,000 (200$) and might be tested in India by the second half of next year. Why India? Low PC Penetration Huge untapped market Attractive to those with low purchasing power The Kayak will be solely dependent on India’s 3G network. Now, we’ve been covering the 3G story for a long time. Recently, we reported how the 3G auction will finally take place in January (hopefully). With the 3G network enabled, the Kayak will have access to high speed Internet. The PC has a design model and very specific software specifications, all of which will be made available to device manufacturers. The Kayak seems to be a very basic model, for those who ...

China 3G boosts Qualcomm (QCOM)
2009-05-08 15:00:00
"The rollout of China’s 3-G cell-phone network offers huge potential for Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM)," suggests Richard Moroney in the blue chip advisory, Dow Theory Forecasts."Third-generatio-n networks offer higher download speeds for phones that browse the Internet and download songs and movies. "With only a hint of a 3-G network currently in place, the Chinese government decided to provide $40 billion to telecom companies to develop network infrastructure."As the infrastructure translates to cell-phone purchases, Qualcomm is likely to be a major player, selling its microchips to mobile-phone makers. "In addition to China, the company has exposure to other emerging markets that leave it well-positioned to capitalize on worldwide mobile-phone growth over the next several years."Qualcomm will pay $891 million over four years to settle a long-running patent dispute with Broadcom and preserve a business model that generates 90% of licensing revenue...

Qualcomm (QCOM): Time to buy
2008-07-16 00:00:00
"Qualcomm (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom) (NASDAQ: QCOM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom)) is my favorite stock for gains over the next 12 months," says Chuck Carlson (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2187). Here's his bullish assessment from The DRIP Investor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2187) newsletter."Yes, the market is declining. And, yes, it is often scary to buy during such market periods. Nevertheless, there’s an adage that 'the best time to invest was yesterday; the next best time is today.'"Indeed, countless studies have shown that the best thing any investor can do is invest early and often. That is the best way to maximize the power of time, and time will have the greatest bearing on your investment results. "In 1999, Qualcomm (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom) (NASDAQ: QCOM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom)) went from less than $4 to over $92; but the party came to a screeching halt over the next three years," recalls Chuck Carlson (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2086).In- The DRIP Investor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2086), he explains, "The stock has been stuck in a trading range for the last four years. But that looks like it is about to end, as it recently moved to a new 52-week high and is setting its sites on its 2006 high of $53.""Strong earnings and greater visibility on some litigation matters should pave the way for solid gains in the second half of 2008. "Technology stocks should remain among the market’s leading sectors, and Qualcomm offers an excellent play in the group."Qualcomm generates 90% of its revenue from cell-phone chipsets and license royalties paid by users of its intellectua...

New 'generation' products boost Qualcomm (QCOM)
2008-05-14 07:00:00
"Uncertainty about the legal disputes has weighed on Qualcomm (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom) (NASDAQ: QCOM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=qcom))," says Richard Moroney (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2010), who rates the stock a long-term buy.The editor of Dow Theory Forecasts (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2010) explains, "Though the court case may distract investors, Qualcomm’s long-term fundamentals appear solid." Here's his bullish outlook."The company is embroiled in disputes over royalty fees paid for use of its patents, particularly by one of its largest customers, Nokia. In March, the combatants agreed to consolidate a host of lawsuits into one case to be heard later this year and likely to be decided by year’s end."Barring a disastrous court loss, which seems unlikely, Qualcomm shares should benefit. Any resolution will reduce uncertainty. By the end of this year, Qualcomm shoul...

NOKIA SAYS IT’S SPENT OVER $1B ON QUALCOMM PATENT PAYMENTS, CAN IT PLEASE
2008-03-13 23:34:00
Filed under: Cellphones You know, we’ll actually be a little sad when the endless legal battle between Nokia and Qualcomm actually comes to an end — but until then, we’re going to revel in all the dirt that comes out of having over a dozen simultaneous lawsuits going worldwide. Nokia now says that it owes Qualcomm nothing for its “early” CDMA patents, because it’s dropped a cool billion dollars into license payments for them over the past 15 years and those deals have expired, so it’s in the clear now. As you might expect, Qualcomm disagrees, and says that if Nokia wants to keep using its tech, it’s got to pay up — that’s on top of the estimated $500 million a year Nokia’s already paying Qualcomm for other patents. Guys, guys, why fight like this? What’s a couple billion a year between friends? Video summary of the entire dispute after the break. [Via MocoNews] Continue reading Nokia says it’s spent over $...
