On Palin?s Qualifications and Obama?s . . . .
2008-10-02 03:36:00 Now, whenever a liberal friend or family member asks me if Sarah Palin is qualified to be vice president, I respond by noting her record of taking on entrenched interests before her election as Alaska Governor and of effecting reform as chief executive of the Last Frontier. They will then brush aside my answers, ...

John McCain's Questionable Qualifications
2008-03-21 13:44:00 Lately, the cable TV pundits have taken to filling the minutes between Viagra commercials with breathless discussion of the relative qualifications of the two Democratic candidates for president. This is not entirely their fault, of course. Hillary Clinton has largely staked her bid for the White House on the proposition that she, rather than rival Barack Obama, is fully prepared the lead the country into the next decade. Obama, in response, has questioned whether eight years as First Lady really contributed anything meaningful to his opponent's curriculum vitae (and yes, there is a subtle tinge of sexism to that position, but we'll leave it for another day).In all the Democratic crossfire, one question has received surprisingly little attention from the talking heads: if we’re going to talk about qualifications, exactly how prepared is John McCain for the nation's top job. He has, of course, warmed a seat in the United States Senate for more than two decades, but his lengt...

Erotic qualifications
2008-02-29 18:35:00 Dallying with these youths is like seeing wolves beneath scattering cherry blossoms, whereas going to bed with prostitutes gives one the feeling of groping about in the dark beneath the new moon without a lantern?, as Ihara Saikaku, the seventeenth-century Japanese short story writer put it. The Encyclopedia of Erotic Literature takes one into some relatively unfamiliar sexual territories ? Japanese, Chinese, Arab, Zulu, Thai and Catalan. Some of the biographical entries are so strange that I wondered if some of these writers had not been made up.Via

Qualifications for Work as a Project/Program Manager
2008-02-06 00:38:00 Careers in project and program management will need individuals who are highly organized and skilled at organizing even the most complicated systems and procedures, are keen at observation, assessment and decision-making, and possess good people skills. Project managers are in charge of a team of core personnel and members hired on a contractual basis, working together on a project as supervised by the project manager, from the initial stages, to planning and design, to implementation or production, and maintenance. While the terms project manager and program manager are sometimes interchanged, there are distinctions between the two. A program can be made up of several projects happening simultaneously, meaning the work of a program manager is larger in scope than a project manager, although both project and program managers have to have the same level of high qualifications to be succeed with their project or program, although there can be many project managers answering to one p...

Qualifications? What does the word really mean in politics?
2007-12-12 15:15:00 Now that we are starting to see more important endorsements for the 2008 Presidential Election (real and imagined) we start hearing more of the typical rhetoric, spin, and buzzwords. One of my favorite buzzwords (and most cryptic) is "qualified". As in who is most "qualified" to be President. It's a funny word in that it apparently means different things to different people. In a generic manner, my own "first instinct" thoughts about the word qualification has to do with experience. Obviously someone who has done a job before (at least successfully) must be considered "qualified". Someone else who has done similar jobs is likely considered qualified as well to a somewhat lesser degree. Someone with limited education who spent their life in construction would probably not be considered qualified to be a computer programmer. Right behind experience in my mind comes some form of either formal or informal training. Certainly you must have a law degree and pass the bar exam before yo...

Roo and Rio to motivate
2007-11-20 06:32:00 Steve McClaren has asked Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand to use their influence in the England camp to deliver rousing rallying calls ahead of Wednesday's crunch qualifier against Croatia.England's decimated ranks will be shorn of the injured Rooney and suspended Ferdinand for the Wembley clash, which will see England qualify as long as they avoid defeat. While McClaren will rue the absence of two of his key players, he has called for the pair to be involved in the pre-match preparations.Eager to foster a sense of unity, both in the dressing room and in the stands, McClaren feels those players absent, possibly including John Terry, could help to deliver a chorus of support."We are going to contact them all," said McClaren."I have spoken to them. We need them at the game, as well as in the dressing room together with us. It would be grand to have them here."Source: Sky Sports
manager-leader qualifications
2007-11-10 14:43:00 There is one person (or group of people) in any organization that determines that organization's level of success more than anyone else. You may argue that it is the front-line. And while I agree that the front line is indispensable as the group that carries out the mission, I still feel like there is a more important group. Some may say that the executive-leaders are the most important, because without them, there would be no organization or vision. Again, while I recognize the importance of this group in setting the direction and creating the "spirit" of the organization, I again still feel like there is a much more important group. The group that I feel is probably the most important group in determining the success of an organization is the managers. Ironically, many people even question the validity of the role of the manager, and even go as far as to state that a manager is not even a leader. However, it is the person in the role of the manager-leader that is responsible for t...

Qualifications of a Bishop or Deacon
2007-10-24 15:48:00 In I Timothy 3, we have the qualifications of a bishop and deacon, as given us by God, through the pen of Paul.1 This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscien...
Everyone Is Gutted, Says Rooney
2007-10-19 10:19:00 Wayne Rooney has admitted he and his team-mates have been left gutted after defeat in Russia left their Euro 2008 hopes hanging by a thread.Rooney had put England ahead with a superb volley in Moscow, but gave away a penalty that sparked England's costly collapse. The spot-kick seemed dubious, but while the Manchester United player had his doubts that the offence took place in the box he did seem to concede he had fouled Konstantin Zurianov."It was five minutes in the second half our concentration slipped and cost us," Rooney told Sky Sports."We were playing well, defending well but it was just two lapses in concentration."He continued: "Everyone is gutted, we are all disappointed and hopefully Israel will help us out."While regarding the penalty, he added: "Not sure, it is just one of those things where he has got in behind me and I think it might have been outside the box, but the ref's give it."Source: Goal.com

Rooney pitching for progress
2007-10-15 18:05:00 Wayne Rooney is confident that England can seal Euro 2008 qualification with victory in Russia on Wednesday. The United striker was part of the side that secured a goalless draw in similar circumstances against Turkey just over five years ago, and he is certain that England can overcome the hurdle of Russia's plastic pitch to book a place at next summer's finals."We know if we get three points then we?ve qualified," he said. "I?m sure it will be difficult and with a plastic pitch, we will not be used to it. But we won?t make excuses if we win or lose ? we just need to do our job."It?s a similar situation to when we played Turkey a few years ago to qualify for the last European Championships. We went out there and did a job and I am confident we can do the same again."Rooney scored his first competitive England goal since 2004 in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Estonia at Wembley, and the mercurial striker was predictably elated to be back on target."I?m delighted to score at any time,...

Roo: I haven't played well for England in two years
2007-10-12 09:48:00 Wayne Rooney has admitted it is two years since he last played well for England - and if Emile Heskey had been fit, he would be facing a real fight to start Saturday?s Wembley Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia.Prior to England?s last two qualifiers against Israel and Russia, a fully-fit Rooney would have been a certainty to start for England such has been his form for his country since making his debut as a 17-year-old against Australia in 2003.Yet the Manchester United forward accepts his omission would have been a distincta possibility had Heskey not broken his metatarsal, an injury that interrupted Rooney's career after he starred in last month?s two victories.Heskey?s absence offers Rooney another chance to impress and potentially end a goal drought in competitive football for England that stretches back to Euro 2004.?My England career started well but it hasn?t really been on track for the last year or two,? he said. "Emile was brilliant and I am sure if he was fit the manag...
McClaren: Rooney raring to go
2007-10-10 13:55:00 Steve McClaren believes Wayne Rooney is "chomping at the bit" to help England take the final steps towards qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals.Rooney is poised to make his first appearance for his country since the Euro qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona seven months ago when England were booed off the pitch at half-time before winning 3-0.The Manchester United star was suspended for the summer meeting with Estonia and his foot injury kept him out of this season's friendly with Germany and the back-to-back qualifiers with Israel and Russia at Wembley. But McClaren knows the former Everton player is desperate to make up for lost time - starting with Saturday's home meeting with Estonia before England head for the crunch clash with Russia in Moscow four days later.McClaren said: "Everyone knows what a fantastic talent Wayne Rooney is and we haven't had him available often enough for England as regards the recent internationals."You want your best players around you for the big g...

Qualifications of Investment Banks' CEOs
2007-08-18 02:13:00 For sure there is no easy and universal way to the top positions in investment banks or similar institutions. Each success case is entirely different. What is more, most of us will never become a CEO or even a Managing Director (what a pity ;) ). Getting on the top of the financial world is not just a matter of qualifications and hard work. What counts most is the luck. Luck of being in the right place at the right time. I think, however, that it is still worth to study the qualifications of people, who currently rule the financial world. I collected all available data about education of the top managers in financial industry in the table below.First conclusion of this analysis is that qualifications of top managers differ a lot. We have guys, who completed MBAs at Harvard, but at the same time many of CEOs graduated just with BA degrees. This indicates that a degree is probably not the decisive factor for the success in the Investment Bank. Degree seems to be only entry level requi...
Rooney gap can be filled by Andrew Johnson
2007-08-17 13:44:00 Everton captain Phil Neville has backed Andrew Johnson to fill the gap in England?s attack, following Wayne Rooney?s foot injury.England coach Steve McClaren is considering his options after losing Rooney for next week?s friendly against Germany and the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month. With Michael Owen returning from injury and Peter Crouch suspended for the Israel game, next Wednesday?s clash against Germany gives McClaren the chance to look at Johnson after the striker?s impressive start to the Premier League season.McClaren was in the stands at White Hart Lane to watch a tireless performance from Johnson during Everton?s 3-1 win over Tottenham on Tuesday night, with Johnson stretching the home defence despite failing to get on the scoresheet."AJ never let them rest for one minute, and that?s what he?s all about," said Neville. Qualifications and Curriculum Authority fails to make radical curriculum ch
2007-07-16 16:08:00 The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has missed a ?real opportunity? to make the radical curriculum changes needed to give children skills for life, said the education union. The government announced a shake-up to the secondary school education system in England last week, which will free about one-quarter of the school day to enable teachers to give more help to pupils struggling to master the basics in English and maths. Ministers asked the QCA to review the curriculum to create flexibility for schools to provide ?catch-up? support in literacy and numeracy for teenagers who are struggling, while stretching those with particular talents and gifts in subjects. But the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) said the new national curriculum fails to specify the wide range of skills that pupils need. The association's general secretary, Mary Bousted, said: ?The QCA has missed an opportunity to radically overhaul the national curriculum. By hanging onto a...
Farming fatalities trigger new Health and Safety Executive qualifications t
2007-07-03 14:40:00 The high number of deaths in the farming industry has led to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) developing new vocational qualifications to boost the competencies of workers in the sector. HSE figures show that the agricultural sector had the most workplace accidents, with 45 fatalities last year - 23 farmers or self-employed workers, 13 employees and nine members of the public. The HSE said: "It's vitally important that the level of hazard awareness is improved so that people who work in the industry can take suitable precautions to reduce the risk of accidents."
executive-leader qualifications
2007-07-02 04:10:00 What is it that makes a leader? Some say that leaders are born that way. Others say that leaders can be made. So the key question is really about whether someone can come to possess the qualities that a leader should have. However, before anyone can determine whether someone can learn them or not, we must first identify what the important qualities actually are. Now I am not going to make the judgement for you on whether these qualities can be learned or not, but I am going to present to you what I believe the most important qualities are.In fact, I also believe that there are different "levels" of leadership, and I also believe that each has their own qualifications. The higher level of leadership that I plan to discuss is what I will refer to as the "executive-leader". The Bible refers to this type of leader as an "overseer" or "elder". This level of leadership is typically responsible for the overall vision of the organization. These leaders are the vision-setters, and the trail-...

InterContinental Hotels Group resignation over falsified qualifications pro
2007-06-15 17:20:00 Employers have been warned to scrutinise CVs thoroughly when recruiting senior management following the resignation of a leading hotel executive who was suspected of lying about his qualifications. Patrick Imbardelli, head of Asia Pacific operations at the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), resigned after he was confronted about misleading claims he had made about his academic qualifications. His departure comes just weeks after the company announced he was to be promoted to the board in recognition of his division?s importance within the group. The company was believed to have been tipped off that Imbardelli had not achieved three qualifications listed on his CV. Simon Bevan, head of fraud services at business services firm BDO Stoy Hayward, said: ?In our experience of investigating frauds committed by senior management, false details in CVs are not an uncommon experience. ?The big question is why wasn?t this first spotted earlier, rather than through a tip-off?...
Jobs for workers with no qualifications disappear but computer skills are n
2007-05-29 14:07:00 UK plc is closing the employment door on workers with no qualifications, but welcomes those with computer skills, research has found. A report published by the ESRC Research Centre on skills, knowledge and organisational performance, found that the number of jobs in the UK requiring no qualifications for entry has dropped from 38% in 1986 to 28% in 2006. It also revealed a ?convergence? between the skills of men?s and women?s jobs. The number of jobs requiring degrees has increased in the past 20 years from 14% to 21% among men, but from 6% to 18% among women. Moreover, computer skills are now an essential element in the workplace. Last year, computer skills were crucial to nearly half of all jobs against less than one-third of jobs in 1997. Minister for lifelong learning, further and higher education, Bill Rammell, said: ?The Leitch Review of Skills has set out the ambition to have world class skills by 2020.
