World Cup Qualifying Thread
2009-10-15 01:42:00
With the South American qualifiers about to finish up and the CONCACAF qualifiers about to start, it's about time for me to get a World Cup Qualifier thread started.  I'll be sharing some thoughts/observations on the qualifiers throughout the evening, and I encourage you to do the same.  I'll also be posting the winner of the U.S.-Costa Rica first goal contest on this thread, so stay tuned for that.  Enjoy the matches....
Top Ten Ways Dale Tallon Could Have Properly Filed Qualifying Offers

Just when you think the Blackhawks are done being a laughingstock, they go ahead and do something so dumb it makes you wish Bill Wirtz were still running the team. Can the Hawks really lose out on one of their best players because they didn't turn in paperwork on time? Good Lord's Stanley Cup is that crazy.Well, Cam Barker re-upped before a ruling went down and so did some others, but no matter how it turns out, the Hawks come out looking like a two-bit operation. So for the purposes of this smartass list, I'm going to pretend they are one.But consider this list a warning: If the Hawks lose Kris Versteeg because of this, the next one won't be nearly...
My Take: What if NASCAR qualifying is cancelled and what about the 2009 All
2009-05-08 03:10:00
Whether it’s NASCAR, Motorsports, Automobiles or more entertainment here on RaceDriven.com, I bring you my opinion (because that is what blogging is – someone’s take on any subject) in style, so let’s get started. In NASCAR, just about every day even in the off season, there seems to be a new discussion on just about any topic in NASCAR from on-track action to the off-track action and today is no different. As a blogger, writer and NASCAR fan, there are always issues facing NASCAR, every decision NASCAR makes is going to be meant with both positive and negative reaction and the latest discussions are just the tip of the iceberg from this past month.1. How to set the grid if NASCAR qualifying is cancelled or washed out.As a NASCAR fan, I hate to see qualifying get washed out due to weather or cancelled for any reason, right now, if qualifying is cancelled, NASCAR will set the starting lineup by owner’s points and for some drivers who are currently not in the top 35 and are g...
Qualifying in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes all the difference.
2008-11-01 22:51:00
As I sit here watching final practice (or for some, Happy Hour which is normally not happy nor an hour long) for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series which is in final preparation for tomorrow’s 500 mile race at Texas Motor Speedway, one discussion not only in the media, but with NASCAR fans that has been widely talked about is NASCAR’s current qualifying policy.Over the past several years, NASCAR has tweaked there Cup Series qualifying policy a few times including recently breaking up the qualifying into two sessions, first the top 35 cars will qualify and then second, the go or go home drivers (the drivers that must qualify on speed due to the fact that they are not in the top 35 in points) which gives the must qualify on speed drivers all a fighting chance in the same weather and track conditions to make the 43 car starting field for the big race. The current policy is working pretty well, of course I don’t care much for watching single car qualifying, but at least it’s fair for a...
Obama: Qualifying for President by Running for President
2008-09-02 17:04:00
Ann Althouse writes: Obama’s biggest accomplishment is his success (thus far) in running a Presidential campaign. But isn’t this a bit absurd? One qualifies to run for President by the very activity of running for President? Read the whole thing!  Via Glenn Reynolds who has some great links on the Bristol Palin issue and how it might ...

2008 Catalunya Qualifying Report - Down To The Wire
2008-06-07 19:08:00
Qualifying practice at the Catalunya Grand Prix at Barcelona, Spain, got underway in warm, humid conditions, under overcast but dry skies. The weather has been like this all weekend, with rain overnight, and occasional smatterings during practice, rendering the track incredibly slippery. After Friday's crashfest, the riders were a little more circumspect this morning, especially once it started to rain with 15 minutes of the session to go. But the afternoon looked like staying thankfully dry. The riders took to the track to a man at the start of the session, working hard to find a race setup after the slippery track surface ruined times on Friday. All except Jorge Lorenzo, that is, who was forced to withdraw from the race after a big crash in Friday afternoon's second free practice session left the Spanish rookie knocked unconscious and out with severe concussion. Times dropped quickly, getting into the 1'43 bracket within 6 minutes, Dani Pedrosa being the first to hit that tar...

2008 Mugello Qualifying Report
2008-05-31 19:59:00
After yesterday's torrential rain, which even managed to influence this morning's final free practice session, the MotoGP regulars were delighted to be rolling out of the pits onto hot tarmac in warm sunshine. The weather had almost completely cleared up, the clouds hanging back in the Tuscan hills, granting the MotoGP riders a reprieve from the rain - at least for the moment. With so much time already lost to the conditions, the pack rolled out almost as one to set about the tricky business of finding a dry weather setup which will work. With hot sunshine forecast for the race tomorrow, and three sessions either blighted or at least impeded by rain, there was much to do. The pace was very fast right from the off, with Colin Edwards taking just over 6 minutes to drop into the 1'50s, and start approaching what looked likely to be race pace. Just a couple of minutes later, a group of riders had all set times well within the 1'50 bracket, and a realistic pace for tomorrow's race...

2008 Le Mans Qualifying Practice Report
2008-05-17 20:54:00
The second day of MotoGP practice at Le Mans had started in spectacular fashion. At the start of the morning FP3 session, Jorge Lorenzo had a nasty crash, ending up tumbling through the gravel trap at the end of the straight for the Chemin aux Boeufs chicane. A visit to the Clinica Mobile revealed that Lorenzo had been incredibly lucky: the Spanish champion, riding with two fractured ankles and fractured bones in his feet, had not injured himself any further. The morning's session was dominated by Colin Edwards, the Tech 3 Yamaha man managing a frighteningly consistent run of laps in the 1'33 bracket, several tenths faster than Valentino Rossi, who ended the session 2nd fastest. But morning practice is one thing: the question was, could Edwards maintain his pace in the afternoon? Once Qualifying Practice got underway, under mixed skies and a threat of rain, Edwards answered that question in the affirmative. The Texan was not the quickest rider out of the gate, but from the s...

2008 Shanghai Qualifying Practice Report
2008-05-03 15:41:00
Two things were on everyone's mind during qualifying practice at Shanghai on Saturday afternoon. The first was the weather, the sun making conditions hot and sticky for qualifying, while torrential rain is forecast for the race on Sunday. This left the paddock in a quandary as to how to treat the session, whether to look for a dry race setup which may turn out to be irrelevant, or focus on qualifying as close to the front as possible, and hope it rains. In the end, most teams found a compromise, and split the session half and half. The bigger question, however, was whether Jorge Lorenzo could ride with the fractured ankles he suffered after crashing yesterday, and if he did, whether he would be able to keep his perfect streak of poles alive. Lorenzo answered part of that question in the morning's free practice session, riding 21 laps in 3 sessions, to see whether he was physically capable of riding. Though his times were nothing to write home about, the Spanish rookie showed he w...
