New Quarterlife TV Show on NBC ROCKS!
2008-02-28 23:33:00 I have been reading for months about this new show Quarterlife and how because of the writer’s strike, it got a shot at airing on network TV when it had only been an online show before that point. I ran into the Quarterlife show the other night on TV by accident and thought I would ...
Quarterlife – NBC’s Shortest Running Series?
2008-02-28 19:19:00 Quarterlife is living proof that works in one medium does not necessarily translate well into another Medium. The Internet series that features short 7 to 9 minute episodes has done extremely well, bringing in huge amounts of hits. NBC attempted to transition the series to TV, and to say the least the results are disappointing. The premier episode according to Nielson statistics brought in a paltry 3.1 million viewers. To put this into some context, Quarterlife had the smallest number of viewers recorded in the last 20 years by Nielson. Rumors across the Internet are that NBC may well cancel this show before the second episode airs. One has to wonder what went wrong? The producers have great credentials, Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick have worked on projects like “My So-Called Life” and “thirtysomething,” One would think that porting an Internet phenom like Quarterlife to the ‘idiot box’ would be a no brainer. In my opinion they failed to take into account the hu...
?QUARTERLIFE? Cancelled?
2008-02-28 19:12:00 Reuters reports that NBC is going to cancel the web-based series QUARTERLIFE after only airing one episode. The problem lies in the fact that the first quaterlife episode garnered “the network’s worst ratings for its time slot in at least 20 years”. Ouch! So NBC is thinking of cancelling the show altogether even before the second ...

NBC?s New Series ?quarterlife? Has Worst Ratings In 17 Years
2008-02-28 15:00:00 Did you get to see NBC’s new series “quarterlife” on Tuesday night? No? Well don’t worry because neither did anyone else, anywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter its premiere pulled just 3.1 million viewers, the lowest rating for the peacock network in 17 years. While I had never heard of “quarterlife” ...

Top Gear Runs Hot, but quarterlife Leaves Me Cold
2008-02-28 00:39:00 I know I'm a day late with this one, but hopefully I'm not a dollar short… Top Gear. The new season started on Monday night on BBC America, and though I'm not a gear head, I'm an instant fan. I'd heard prior to the new season starting that the show was fun, but for some reason I'd never really got around to watching it. But, what with my usual weekly fare on hiatus there was a 45-minute window in my viewing schedule and I slotted Top Gear in. Now, frankly, I'm not quite sure what I did without it. Okay, that's an overstatement. It's fun, but it's not the be all and end all of television. I'm going to continue watching for the rest of the season, though. For those of you who haven't seen it, Top Gear focuses on driving and all things remotely relevant to it. They test cars, they talk to celebrities about cars (and make the celebs run the Top Gear course in a car), and last night they went searching for the best driving ro...

Is quarterlife?s Heat Cooling Off?
2008-02-18 11:50:00 While quarterlife — which had the good fortune of getting picked up by NBC amidst concern that the networks are running out of scripted content as a result of the writers’ strike — may be able to pass a lie detector with this release (2,000,000 divided by 8 does indeed equal 250,000), it’s unfair to count the simple average when so much of that number is

Exclusive Interview: QUARTERLIFE Star Maite Schwartz
2008-01-25 19:56:00 By: Amrie Cunningham [My Take on TV] I say this all the time, but seriously, one of the greatest things about being a part of thetvaddict.com, besides the ability to have an excuse to watch hours upon hours of TV during any given week, is the really wonderful interviews I get to do. Last week, I had the chance to talk to Maite Schwartz, who plays Lisa on Quarterlife. From the creators of My So Called Life, the internet-based show follows 20-some-things interacting, loving, hating, learning, growing, etc., in 8-10 minute increments on a bi-weekly basis. As the show readies itself for a February premiere on NBC, Maite (who I’m sure is poised to become a serious household name) and I chatted for a bit about why she wanted to play Lisa, why acting has had such an amazing impact on her life, and why guys who play with food for a living are pretty awesome. I’m completely addicted to Quarterlife. Seriously, when I know there’s going to be a new episode, I jump on the computer to ...

Ripples, They Have a Way of Colliding To Cause Change
2007-12-18 12:32:00 Could the writers strike, now in its second month and with no end in sight become a catalyst for a shift from OTA/Cable to online/IPTV? There has been a drain in Ad revenues for premium programming and advertisers have been forced to compensate advertisers with cash (verses time). The trend has been one of declining viewership for OTA with a corresponding increase for Cable. In addition, revenue from OTA has been flat. Even if the strike were settled today, it would by some estimates take two or more months too ramp up production and inventory to offset the drain in revenues. In the meantime, the Internet is not waiting. Shows like ?Quarterlife? and sites like ?MyDamnChannel,? ?Funny or Die? are marching on. Some WGA writers are reportedly in talks with venture capitalists about funding their own online programming, which would bypass the studios model. On the other hand, the traditional model is far from dead. Couple that with fragmentation from DVR?s, VOD and Place ...

Beacon, Quarterlife, and Nominee For Worst Commerical Ever
2007-11-22 18:36:00 couldn't decide what to post about today, so here are 3 things I thought were worth sharing. MoveOn.org Fuels Backlash Against Facebook's Beacon Beacon, the most controversial element of Facebook's newly released Social Ad Program that automatically shares information about books, movies, or gifts you buy online with everyone you know on Facebook, is drawing privacy complaints. On Tuesday, social activist site MoveOn.org started it own Facebook group called "Petition: Facebook, stop invading my privacy!". The group has already grown to over 10,000 members. MoveOn is also asking people to sign a petition demanding that Facebook protect people's online privacy...
Quarterlife and Myspace Open My Eyes to the True Potential of Internet TV
2007-11-12 18:47:00 One of the good things about internet TV and internet video in general, is that you don't have to spend all your money in one place. Unlike broadcast TV you are not forced to create a show that appeals to everybody, that more often than not ends up appealing to nobody. With internet TV You can create smaller shows, with smaller budgets, aimed at smaller audiences and still have the potential to succeed. Internet producers and broadcasters are still going to have to rely on advertising to fund their show, but they will need far less of those dollars to make a go at it.
Quarterlife Crisis
2007-10-10 17:54:00 My obligation to pay these debts consume me constantly...sort of like that weight loss commercial where people are walking around with scales chained to their ankles. At times, I dislike my job, but I can't quit. I have several debts hanging over my head, and I can't afford to quit. However, I don't want to get fired either due to the same reason: I still have those pesky debts!I feel lost. My goals are to lose weight and pay off my debts. But what else? Before, it was easy. My purpose was to go to college, obtain a degree, and secure a good job. Mother emphasized these goals repeatedly...attend college, get a degree, and get a good job. I've accomplished that. Now what do I do? Twiddle my thumbs? While I'm driving home from work I always wonder "Ugh, what am I doing?"Eventually, I want to go back to school and get a masters. I'm just afraid how much debt I'll acquire from graduate school. I'll figure out a method to finance education. I'll probably work full-time and atten...

Oxymoronic?
2007-09-18 06:50:00 According to a recent Business Week article MySpace Goes Hollywood, MySpace was tossing the term ?Network Quality? around without much understanding what it means. They were referring to Quarterlife, a series of eight-minute videos, created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick which is being touted in the article as the first network quality show produced for the on-line viewing, really? As someone who has shot content for ?Broadcast?, the term is specific to certain technical parameters for transmission of SD or HD signals...for another post. Considering that many people view on-line content using a laptop, desktop monitor or mobile device such as an iPod they are not going to see the difference between a five thousand dollar DV camera verses its sixty-thousand dollar cousin. In addition, most content today is not yet encoded at VC1 specs, which seems to render this point moot. Quarterlife, the thread for the series is about a group of twentysomething writers, actors and...

The Quarterlife Crisis and Ugly Coats
2007-07-26 07:29:00 Classic quarterlife, or any time of life, transition. You think life is one way. Then it isn’t. You shed the old. Go through a bit of chaos. Then emerge to a new level of “getting it.” I asked Peggy, who’s 26, to open Men Are Easy to any page and point. She emailed, “I got the ...

Quarterlife Jumps From Internet To TV
1969-12-31 19:00:00 Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick have been behind some of the most popular TV series in recent history. They have brought TV shows that showed realistic characters with normal motivations and quirks. The shows were Thirtysomething, My So-Called Life, and Once and Again. The shows dealt mostly with people trying to reaffirm their stances in ...
