I've always liked the guys, definitely, they've always seemed nice and friendly and all that, and they've been supportive of the Houston scene since before I even came here. But I could never really get into the music -- it always seemed a bit overlong, a bit too goofy, a bit too weird-for-weird's-sake, y'know?These days, though, I find myself warming to the band's laidback-but-still-roaring psych-rock sound, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Is it that I'm growing to appreciate this sort of psych more as I get older? Nah; I still rarely have the patience to sit through an album's worth of noodly, blunt-worthy jams. Heck, if anything, I was more into the spacier, more psychedelic stuff back in college, when I could just bliss out on the dorm-room floor for a few hours at a stretch.Could it be that the LP4 have gotten that much better over the years? The song is "Day by Day," composed by Sammy Cahn, Axel Stordahl, and Paul Weston. At the end of the drum solo, we just skip playing the melody (or head) and go directly into Ornette Coleman's "Kathelin Gray," something I like to do from time to time with my group. It also rhymes, which I like: "Day by Day" into "Kathelin Gray." Get it? Finally, I'll be bringing my quartet into The 55 Bar again in two days, this coming Wednesday, April 9th, from 7-9pm. I can't even begin to describe this, so I will give you some of the description and hopefully it makes sense.As seen in the beginning of the video, the visitor to the site enters a melody on their computer keyboard. The machine then uses this melody to generate an original and unique 2 1/2 minute piece of music. The web visitor also receives a link to a webcam video of their piece being played.There is a website associated with the video but it is sponsored by Absolut vodka so if you are under the age of majority (kids that means you) you need your parents.
