Queen Victoria Considered Cursed
2008-01-02 01:39:00
This is a story for the superstitious out there. When the Queen Victoria was launched in December Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall did the customary christening of the ship by hitting it with a bottle of champagne. Well the bottle did not break. Less than a month after launch less than 100 of the 2000+ passengers on board came down with the norovirus bug. While many frequent cruisers are familiar with what norovirus is and how it can spread on a ship, this is the first incident on the Queen Victoria that is already being attributed to the curse. The champagne curse goes back quite a ways in ship launching history but now the Queen Victoria will have the added curse of Camilla. All the other Cunard ships were christened by the Queen until now adding to the lore of having a curse. To make matters worse, the Aurora, a ship that was launched in 2000 by Princess Anne who failed to have the bottle break, was in the harbour on the day of the launch. Aurora broke down on its maiden ...

Cunard Introduces Self Guided Art Tour on the Queen Victoria
2007-10-26 14:28:00
The real Queen Victoria was a virtual collection of firsts. She was the first of the modern day monarchs, having a telephone, riding a train and even playing host to a World’s Fair! She also had the longest reign, highlighted by England’s prevalence in the Industrial Revolution and eventually into a constitutional monarchy. In recognition of her greatness, Cunard engaged a select group of accomplished contemporary British artists to bring style and ambiance to its newest ocean liner, Queen Victoria. The interior collection, from the Grand Lobby to all the restaurants and famous-named rooms, pieces are acknowledged on an 80 minute self-guided digital audio overview, the Queen Victoria Art Tour, which also features video interviews by the artists.

Cunard Line?s Queen Victoria Wines and Dines Traditionally
2007-09-27 14:10:00
Indeed, Cunard is continuing the classic traditions of grand ocean cruising with the Queen Victoria and her magnificent offerings of the elegant restautrants, champagne bars, and of course the world famous Queens Room, the focal point of many nostalgic afternoon teas. Steeped in history, Cunard’s past showcases what to expect from the Queen Victoria in the future. Cunard firsts include the first transatlantic departures, the firt in 1840. Cunard showcased the first gym and health center way back in 1911. Cunard also held, and still holds, the record for the largest passenger ship ever built. And Cunard Line was the first to offer 3 world cruises at the same time. I expect the Queen Victoria will continue the tradition of carrying Royalty, statesmen, musicians, journalists, world explorers, and the stars of stage and screen like her sisters, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Mary 2. In maintaining it’s reputation for food and service, the Queen Victoria offers t...

Excelsior Diamond : named after the Jubilee in honor of Queen Victoria
2007-08-22 23:17:00
On the evening of June 30, 1893, an African mine worker picked up an immense diamond in a shovelful of gravel which he was loading into a truck; he hid it from his overseer and delivered it directly into the hands of the mine manager. The diamond was discovered in the Jagersfontein mine in the Orange River Colony. The lucky Kaffir was rewarded he received $2500 and a horse equipped with saddle and bridle. The diamond had a blue-white tint and weighed 971 3/4 carats (194.2 g) or equivalent to 995.2 metric caratsThe shape the diamond stone was flat on one side and rose to a peak on the other, rather like a loaf of rye bread. Apparently it was this fact which caused the diamond to be given the name of Excelsior, meaning higher. The stone was ultimately named the Jubilee in honour of the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the accession of the late Queen Victoria.Until 1905, when the larger Cullinan diamond was found, the Excelsior was the largest known diamond in the world. The...
Queen Victoria and Catholicism in Victorian Britain
2007-07-14 21:32:00
In Queen Victoria and the challenge of Roman Catholicism, Walter L Arnstein discusses the reaction of Queen Victoria towards Catholicism."Queen Victoria had mixed reactions to the challenge posed by Roman Catholicism during the 19th century. As a young princess, Victoria was an advocate of Catholic emancipation and broad religious toleration. However, she became a Protestant crusader and considered herself very anti-Catholic in the early 1870s. Towards the end of her reign, Victoria's attitude underwent a second significant transformation. Victoria's public actions and private views reflected her becoming a philo-Catholic."
