Driving in Queensland
2008-10-29 09:59:00 At our latest informal curry club venture, we were reminiscing about our experiences driving around Queensland. Incidentally, don't bother with the new Indian restaurant on Hastings Street, Noosa. I don't know what part of the sub continent they think they're from, but someone should tell them that a madras is different from a korma. Distinctly pants. When I finally got round to registering my NSW plated car in Queensland, I had to register myself too, as a 'new customer', as I hadn't owned a car in QLD before. The lady behind the counter was, like most aussies, friendly and chatty. She humoured me by letting me have a quick whinge about Jim, my automotive ebay purchase. So named after Jim Morrison because, within the first 2 weeks of owning him, all the bloody doors were f***ed. "Bit of a limon is he?" she asked sympathetically. Yep. Why, only this week I've forked out another $200 on lubricants, spanners and windscreen wipers.Which accounts for why all the speeding tickets I...

Rally Queensland: A cr*p day out
2008-06-22 09:28:00 If, like me, you are a frustrated petrol head whose only chance of being the next Colin (-ette?) Macrae (RIP) is if the DVLA gave out free lessons in rally driving as a condition of owning a car, then the next best thing might be to mosey on down to your nearest rally event. If your nearest rally is in a UK forest then, so long as the weather holds off and you don't mind a bit of a walk, it should be an interesting few hours. If your nearest event happens to be the Queensland round of the Australian Rally Championship, forget it; I've seen more sideways action on our ride-on lawn mower. The day started badly: Pottering up the highway on Dave's 1953 Matchless motorbike, we were nearly side swiped into the afterlife by a tosser towing a caravan, clearly revelling in the glory of actually being able to overtake something. Shortly afterwards, Dave was stopped at a junction by traffic cops lying in wait for people not stopping at an unnoticeable stop sign. Having been too busy negotiat...

Teaching in Queensland - or trying to
2008-05-24 04:37:00 "I don't believe in ANZAC day so I'm not doing this, " said the eight year old, who then waited to see what I would do next. This was my first day of teaching in Australia, after enjoying 18 months of not doing it, and, as a supply teacher, I needed to weigh up my confrontation options quickly. Fortunately, I had brought with me the world's most boring Harry Potter word search so I sent him off to a corner and we were both happy. Let me start by saying that having your qualified teacher status recognised in Queensland is no easy task. It involves reams of paper, endless queueing up to see a JP and a disturbing trip down memory lane. I will attempt to demonstrate how frustrating this ridiculous, pompous and bureaucratic process is.Round 1 involved tracking down academic transcripts I didn't even know I had. Not content with seeing my degree and post graduate qualifications for teaching, Queensland College of Teachers wanted to see documentation of the grades I obtained for each m...

Beattie Greenwashes Eco Tourism
2008-04-20 04:55:00 Former Queensland Governor, Peter Beattier, now swanning it up in the United States is pitching eco tourism in Queensland to wealthy Americans and Europeans."Global warming not only demands environmental answers but will see an increasing desire ... for clean, green tourism destinations which are environmentally friendly and carbon neutral." He said an increasing number of American and European tourists would demand eco-friendly tourist activities and accommodation. "Queensland's rainforests and Great Barrier Reef will be prime targets for these environmental tourists, and operators who promote themselves as environmentally friendly and carbon neutral will be the big winners," he said. "Indeed, holiday experiences which include a focus on the dangers facing the reef from rising global temperatures will have a particular appeal, especially if Australian tourism operators highlight the positive role Australia is playing in fighting carbon emissions and global warming."The guests will...
Queensland Healths $100,000 Supersize Me Ambulance Service
2008-04-08 01:36:00 Following up on Ian, Crapmeister in Chief's thoughts on Queensland Health who failed to come to aid of one of their employees, a remote health worker who had been raped, we see that there has been a change of heart when it comes to their customers.Queensland Health was forced to charter a Hercules aircraft from the Defence Force because it had no ambulances or planes big enough to transport a 240kg patient. Even though the woman was deemed well enough to travel by road from Mount Isa to Townsville the Queensland Ambulance Service had no vehicles capable of carrying her. She was even too large to be safely carried in King Air light aircraft operated by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. A Defence Force spokesman confirmed a C-130 Hercules was despatched from the RAAF base at Richmond, Sydney after a request from the Queensland government. The cost to taxpayers was not disclosed but a Hercules aircraft costs about $13,000 an hour to operate, putting the total cost of the nine-hour op...

SE Queensland Real Estate Overview
2008-01-16 13:41:00 So you are thinking of moving to Queensland? You have heard of the great climate, reasonable cost of living and wonderful beaches with fine white sand. Yes, I am prejudiced. Born and bred here but have lived around Australia and done a fair amount of travel. We have clean air, brilliant food and a safe environment so why wouldn't you want to come. Brissie (as we locals refer to it)has a thriving CBD on the north side of the Brisbane River. There are three main suburban centres - Chermside on the North, Toowong/Indooroopilly on the inner West and Upper Mt Gravatt on the Southside. The agency I am asociated with is situated on the Southside approx 10 klms from the CBD. The area is serviced by freeways to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, approx 20 mins to the International Airport and 15 mins to CBD by car with a dedicated busway as well. Griffith University is minutes away and there are many facilities for the family.A brilliant place for investment or personal living.
Queensland 'Does Have Affordable Property Options'
2008-01-11 01:00:00 People looking to purchase investment property in Australia can find affordable options in Queensland, it has been suggested.Peter McGrath, chairman of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), commented on figures released by the group which found that units or townhouses are demonstrating high growth levels by offering first-time buyers and easy route on to the property ladder.One-third of the state's major centres offer unit or townhouse prices for less than 250,000 AUD (approximately 114,000 GBP), according to research by REIQ.Foreign investors with property in Australia may welcome Mr McGrath's opinion that the unit and townhouse market is in good shape following double-digit percentage growth figures being recorded in some areas of the state.Eagleby, Hope Island, Mermaid Beach, Beenleigh and Eden's Landing were among the high performing suburbs singled out by REIQ's report."In today's market, properties under 250,000 AUD represent a very affordable way into the...
