Russian trucks form record queues in Finland
2007-12-25 05:53:00 Russian trucks have queued up for 100 kilometres (62 miles) at the Finnish border ahead of the holiday season, prompting the Nordic nation to ask the European Union for help eliminating the record blockage. Russia’s booming economy has led to constant traffic headaches in the region as trucks carrying new cars, televisions and machinery transit through Finland and the Baltic nations. Finland is now as large a trading partner for Russia as the United States because of the surging trans-border traffic, but customs posts on the border are continuously struggling to cope. While Trucks are stuck at the border, retailers in Russia and the transport firms are losing money and local people are afraid to drive on the roads with one lane blocked by trucks. Finland’s government said on Friday the Minister for Transport, Anu Vehvilainen, had again pleaded for the European Commission to influence Russia to reduce the traffic block by increasing electronic customs services, reducing b...
Long queues in Gujarat as BJP, Congress claim victory
2007-12-16 15:42:00 Hundreds of thousands of men and women stood in long queues to vote in the final phase of Gujarat's assembly elections Sunday as both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress claimed victories. After a poor start to polling due to cold winds, voter turnout went up rapidly across Gujarat's northern and central areas as the day progressed in a do-or-die battle involving 599 candidates in 95 constituencies. In some places, however, voters gathered at polling centres even before they opened at 8 am. A total of 18.7 million people are eligible to vote on Sunday, and cities and towns in both regions witnessed maximum enthusiasm to pick a new assembly. A confident and combative Chief Minister Narendra Modi claimed that the BJP would sweep the elections to retain power in a state whose electoral outcome is widely expected to have an impact on national politics. BJP leader and prime ministerial candidate L.K Advani also made a similar assertion. After casting his vote in ...

iPhone Copycats in London get on the Queues
2007-11-08 17:20:00 True London weather with your iPhoneAlthough iPhone is not available, officially until 6:02pm on 9 November, but it looks like a lines has already started forming outside the flagship London Apple store, Just like iPhone fans in USA. But just that they call the lines, "queues" and hope it will make a difference! Ha.But they can be rest assured they will not be able to sell them on eBay for 1000 of pounds nor get $30000 for hacking them. We in USA have been there and done that. Just buy the phone for much cheaper than we did and let us know about the iPhone 1.1.2 software, so we can manage not to iBrick them so someone can help us to unbrick them.Have fun with what we already thrash!image courtesy of Pocket-LintTags: iPhone, iPhone Europe, iPhone UK
Supermarket queues
2007-10-25 09:40:00 We’ve a little supermarket just beside us which we pop into quite often. Now, you’d think that if you’ve only one item to get then it would take less time to get it than it would when you’ve a whole trolley to get. Except that it never works out like that. Sure, you might have people in ...
Airport Queues To Be A Thing Of The Past With New Machines

Long queues ahoy!
2007-07-28 00:00:00 The new Brazilian Defence minister has just declared that never-ending queues at the airports are the price you pay for safety. Hold on. If the queues represent any price at all, it has to be the price of incompetence. Because 10 months of queues at the Brazilian airports have brought no safety whatsoever. So much ...
Introduction to Linked Queues
2007-07-23 08:39:00 In one of the article Introduction to Linked Stacks, I said that representing data structures such as Stacks and Queues as arrays had one major problem that it can?t have more than a predefined number of elements. To overcome this we used linked lists to represent stacks. In this article we?ll use linked lists to represent queues. Below are some graphics that illustrate the addition and retrieval of elements to and from the linked queue. FIG.: Addition of data to the linked queue FIG.: Retrieval of elements from the linked queue I don?t think there is anything more that needs to be discussed, so let?s have a look at the example program: // -- Linked Queues -- // C++ Example Program to // illustrate the representation // of queues as linked lists #include<iostream.h> // node class, this will // represent the nodes or elements // of the linked queues class node { public: int info; node *link; }; // declare global objects node *f...
Data Structures: Introduction to Queues
2007-07-04 15:43:00 Queue is a linear data structure in which data can be added to one end and retrieved from the other. Just like the queue of the real world, the data that goes first into the queue is the first one to be retrieved. That is why queues are sometimes called as First-In-First-Out data structure. In case of queues, we saw that data is inserted both from one end but in case of Queues; data is added to one end (known as REAR) and retrieved from the other end (known as FRONT). The data first added is the first one to be retrieved while in case of queues the data last added is the first one to be retrieved. A few points regarding Queues: Queues: It is a linear data structure; linked lists and arrays can represent it. Although representing queues with arrays have its shortcomings but due to simplicity, we will be representing queues with arrays in this article. Rear: A variable stores the index number in the array at which the new data will be added (in the queue). Front: It is a variab...
Follow the queues: The best ice cream in Copenhagen!
2007-04-11 18:00:00 by Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)-is there an ice cream shortage in Copenhagen? On pretty much any hot and sunny day in Copenhagen (in fact, it doesn't really need to be that hot, just sunny), at certain hours of the day you'll find queues like it was a supermarket twenty-five years ago in Eastern Europe suffering a food shortage.Alas, it's not a shortage of food that drives the crowds toward Paradis in Copenhagen, rather it's a shortage of comparably tasty ice cream to be found anywhere else in the city. Italian style ice cream. Really f#%*ing tasty ice cream. How good would I say Paradis ice cream is?Well, in the office where I've been working the past couple months Ben and Jerry's, one of the most popular American style ice creams, is stocked in the freezer for staff to help themselves to. There's a lot of it and many flavours all there for the taking. And it' free. It's also rather tasty. But it's just not tasty like Paradis ice cream.Ben and Jerry's ice cr...

Queues, Scalability, & Availability
2007-02-03 11:01:01 Dr. Nick has a great post up on scalability, queues, and WCF. For some reason, everybody’s always talking about scalability, but availability gets much less play. For many systems, availability is actually the more important *ility. Anyway, when it comes to scaling out queues help a lot. Although not explicitly mentioned in the above post, having multiple machines feeding off of the same queue is the key to scalability and is known as the Competing Consumer pattern. The added benefit of such a design is that you get availability without any additional work, given that you have more than one consuming machine per queue. One thing to keep in mind about the Microsoft platform today is that MSMQ does not currently support remote, transactional receives. What this means is that, in the above design, you cannot make sure that if one of the servers fails while processing a message from the queue, that that message will return to the queue. For some kinds of messages this isn’t ... |
